2010 Yosemite National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin

Tomorrow, June 9, 2011 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin sales of the 2010-P Yosemite National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. This continues the steady release of the numismatic versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Coins.

The first issue featuring Hot Springs was released on April 28 and reached a sell out (waiting list) on May 13. The next issue featuring Yellowstone National Park was released on May 17 and sold out (without a waiting list) on June 1. The total availability period for each product was 15 days.

The Yosemite coin features a view of the granite rock formation known as El Capitan, which rises more than 3,000 feet above the valley floor. This was designed by Joseph Menna and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The obverse of the coin features the restored 1932 portrait of George Washington designed by John Flanagan.

Each coin contains 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver and has a diameter of 3 inches. This numismatic release carries the “P” mint mark and has a special finish created through a vapor blasting technique applied after striking.

Details of the offering match those of the previous two releases. There is a total mintage of 27,000 units. Pricing will be $279.95, with an ordering limit of one per household imposed.

The US Mint does caution that the pricing is subject to change, but the same price level has been used consistently across a wide range of silver market prices. When the Hot Springs coin went on sale silver was above $48 per ounce, and when Yellowstone was first offered, silver was around $34.

It seems fairly likely that the 2010-dated numismatic America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins will continue to sell out. Collectors seem to be motivated by the unique nature of the offering and the limited 27,000 mintage.

I predict this one will last long enough the Mint might actually raise the household order limit before it's gone. I think it will acheive the sellout, but not in the two-week timeframe of the first two.

  3. Anonymous says

it will sell out quickly, those who bought the first two are in it now, at least for the first 5 issues. I will be buying mine right away, not sure what people are waiting for, the price will not be going down.

NGC will do very well on sanfran silver eagles, seeing how you must pay them to grade 500 coins at a time to get that san fran label. WHAT A JOKE

Yosemite National Park is hands down the most beautiful place in the United States. Anyone that thinks that this will not sell out in record time is trying to fool the rest of us.

If you were only going to buy one, this is it !!

Don't snooze believing that he price of silver will be decreasing anytime soon. This same mind set kept The Mary Todd Lincoln out of your hand.

  6. Anonymous says

I have TWO of the unc Mary Todd Lincoln coins. And, I bought them for a lot less than the price they sold out at recently! $841 each, the original issue price.

  7. Anonymous says

These will sell out in two or three weeks. There is a committed collector base and only 27 large to go 'round. I plan to be in for the first five but I have my doubts the 2011's will sell more than 60 large for each coin. These coins are not cheap for silver and economy not that great.
I am wait and see on the 2011's. Sure ain't gonna jump in right away with 100 large limit scheduled per coin.

  8. Louis says

To 2:49pm: The Mint has not announced the mintages of the 2011 collector versions. Only the bullion coins have any hard numbers yet, and those may go up later.

  9. joe says

"Yosemite National Park is hands down the most beautiful place in the United States."

It's nice to be sure, but it doesn't touch Alaska for beauty. Denali National Park is awesome and has the tallest mountain from base (almost sea level) to peak (at over 20K feet) in the world. Everest sits on the base of the Tibetan plateau, which is already at 17K, and is not even close in shear rise. Toss in a lot of caribou, moose, bears and wolves, rivers, forests, etc. and there is nothing like it on the planet earth.

That said, I'm agree the Yosemite coin will have a lower mintage and be more valuable from that standpoint.

  10. Anonymous says

yosemite will have a lower mintage ???? —- All the 2010 (P) collector coins have the same mintage…27,000.

I can't wait to buy the 3 more coins from 2010 issue. After that than I can relax. I have no intention what so ever to collect more bullion "coin" that are no more than a piece of metal. I am already tired looking at the 2 coins I have.
I'll go back to something small yet valuable like gold coins.

  12. Anonymous says

There is a "DM" before the "PL". It's meant to lighten your wallet by an extra 2 to 3 hundered dollars.

  13. Anonymous says

To 4:44pm: If you are tired of looking at the two you have, why are you so eager to get the other three? To flip them? If you think they are just bullion and too big, why buy any?

  14. Anonymous says

I agree – no reason to believe at this point 2010s wont sell out unless everyone is flipping these coins. the 5th one will be fun to watch later on this year

  15. Anonymous says

To: What's the difference between DMPL and PL?

You'd really have to see them in hand. I have 2 Grand Canyons…one graded PCGS MS69 and the other PCGS MS68DMPL. I would take the 68DMPL any day over the MS69. If you held the two coins in front of someone and hide the grades, 10 out of 10 people would say the 68DMPL looks better than the MS69.

  20. Anonymous says

Seeing how the dealer will not be able to pick out the high grade silver eagles out of the monster boxes the market is going to be flooded with a large amount of low graded silver eagles from s/f mint. The last monster unopened box i got only had about 100 silver eagle eagles in it that i felt were good enough to be graded. So anything less than ms69 will not hold up in the market, regaurdless of the s/f label from NGC.

I just saw this article on CoinNews. Australia will be issuing a 5 ounce silver coin for $461.18 (US). The US ATB P 5 ounce coins are cheap, compared to the Aussie coin. Here come the foreign collectors!

    ——————-

The Perth Mint on June 7 released a new 2011 Australian Koala 5 Oz Silver Proof Coin for collectors, its largest product in the popular koala coin series and the first issue in this size. The silver coin is currently listed for a price of $431.82 (AUS), or $461.18 (US).

  24. Anonymous says

IMO, the 5 0z ATB looks much nicer than the Australia 5 oz; not to even mention it's way cheaper.

    Guess I'll rather buy 3 5oz ATB then 2 5oz Australia pucks.

The smarter investment would be to buy the 2011 ATB bullion coins at prices closer to spot sliver. The ATB P coins are for collectors. BTW: There are much better investments than big chunks of silver…that train has left the station.

  26. Anonymous says

Talking about the 5oz Koala 2011 from Australia. Only 5000 were minted and they are proof! Here is the interesting thing: only 300 are available for sale in Australia – US buyers not welcomer this one at the Perth mint! The rest of it i.e. 4700 coins were bought by the New York Mint/Gov. Mint entities in the US. They had the coins graded by NGC of which approx. 1700 were graded PF70 and the rest PF69. They are selling the PF69 right now at $799.00 each! Sickening!

I'll finish the 2010 set, but am still adopting a "wait and see" for the 2011's. A little bit of information from the Mint would be nice. How many do they plan to offer, and at what price? It seems unlikely they would keep the price at $279.95, but if spot silver stays where it's at for now maybe they will.

I got the first two ATB and will buy the next Three to complete the set. As for 2011 and beyond, I'll pass on these unless I really like the design.

What's the big deal about the Hot Springs coin? It's mostly just a rendition of a government building (park hdqtrs) on a coins. Yes, the building has a very pretty ornamented art deco door and there's a little burble of spring water in the foreground. As for transfering the likeness of a government building to a coin, yeah, they did a good job. Did Teddy Roosevelt take a sitz bath somewhere in that building?

  37. Anonymous says

The Hot Springs is the only ATB coin that doesn't have variations of mountains and animals on it.
That's why it is my favorite.
I do like the "art deco" style too.

Actually the mark up per oz is greater on the ASE proof. It's price is gonna be $59.95…times 5 = 299.75

  42. Anonymous says

If today's silver price will hold, the UNC ASE would be around $50. That's $250 comparing to the 5 ounce ATB.

"What's the appeal of these 5oz quarters? Aren't there better ways to invest in 5oz of silver without paying $100 premium?"

I have this hobby for two purposes:

    1) As an investment, and
    2) as one interested in coins.

Purchasing collectible US Mint coins is a means of addressing both of these purposes. The bullion aspect of the purchase meets my investment requirement. Additionally, I am willing to pay a premium for numismatic enjoyment (higher theoretical quality and uniqueness).

I like the 2010 and 2011 bullion ATB coins too. If you buy the 2011 bullions at the right spot price, the average of P and bullions is much better. The american coins beat the canadian and sustralian 5 ounce by several hundred dollars apiece.

  62. Anonymous says

They have to release two more of the 2010 ATBs and I would think they would release the five 2011 also within this year. So seven more to go in about 6 months – or probably one every three to four weeks. OUCH!

  63. Anonymous says

The fact that ordering was so quick today probably represents significantly reduced demand for ATB P's and not a system upgrade of the US Mint website. Just like the First Spouse series, a very limited and shrinking number of people are interested in acquiring a full set of these.

  64. Anonymous says

  68. Anonymous says

I don't agree with the people here saying sales of Yosemite are going to be slower than the first two. If there was going to be a big sales slowdown, I think it would have happened with Yellowstone. It's clear there is a built-in base of support for the 2010 set. We might see a sales slowdown for the 2011s, though some of the designs for 2011 are really great (I love Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Chickasaw) and may at least maintain the current pace of buying if not increase it. Plus we might finally see price reductions for the 2011s.

The slowdown problems on the Mint's website for this release actually lasted a little longer than Yellowstone's problems did, so I think sales are probably about the same as the first two coins.

In other news, my platinum eagle finally arrived (though I had to sell some of my silver stash to afford it). Wow, what a beaut this one is. I would never have bought it without this blog, thanks Michael.

  70. Anonymous says

Yeah, I sure hope silver reaches the $100+ per ounce some keep preaching it will, just so I can sell these profitably!

I'll finish what I started with the 2010 set, but I seriously doubt I will pursue the 2011's or beyond. I'll keep an eye on their sales figures though, and if it looks like more low-mintage First Spouse-type situations brewing, I will most likely buy some of the later ones too.

  71. Anonymous says

The only people buying the Yosemite are the ones already in HS and YS; so yes dun think there's new demand out there for this 5 ozers….. they most likely won't sell for much above bullion once people realize the real lack of demand on these.

  73. Anonymous says

comm'on guys, it's just 300 USD, anyone can afford the 5 ozer. The question is will there be enough demand to push the price higher from here?

  74. Anonymous says

"btw, having Mint issued coins graded is a waste of money for true collectors imo."

True, except for older numismatic pieces. Fake Morgans and $2.50 Gold Eagles are everywhere. But I like the modern stuff in the original packaging.

The only argument I can make for grading them is the serious potential for fakes from China to appear a few years from now. Did you see their new stealth fighter?! Can someone say industrial espionage?! Having them graded and slabbed will guarantee authenticity to go along with the original packaging. This is good for those who pass it along to their children or purchase them as investments to cash in on years from now.

A reent article by JPMorgan said that there will be a lot of demand on US treasury from emerging market since they have ~1T reserve last year. Order number does not necessarily indicate the number of Yosemite coins sold.

If the difference in order numbers from 12 noon today to the current time was 50,000, it could be that 2 Yosemite coins were sold and 49,998 2011 proof sets were sold.

Each order gets a unique number, regardless if the order includes a Yosemite coin.

Any coin with a US Mint mint mark with a mintage of 27,000 has got to be rare.

This is a new strategy for me because the last two times I sent one to my PO Box and one to the physical address. The coin sent to my physical address came UPS the other coin sent to my PO Box arrived 4-5 days later via USPS First Class. Also the coin mailed via USPS was shipped 2 days after the UPS coin in both cases. If you want fast delivery send it to a physical address.

I think long term the 2010-P's will be very profitable. AS someone said earlier, it took the UHR coin a year or two to achieve high premiums. Think about it..most people don't even know about the ATB quarters(you never see them in circulation) much less the 5 oz versions. Once the public becomes aware of these(and who knows when that will be…but eventually they will) then these low mintage 2010 ATB 5 oz coins (both the 33,000 bullion and 27,000 "P" coins) will become hot items! Get them at these prices while you can!

There are a lot of recent low mintage Gold Eagles (fractional proofs). Add in fractional Gold Buffalos, 1 oz Platinum Eagles and the FS coins. They all have mint marks and lower mintages than 27K.

If silver gets too high and the collector base falls, future years may also have low mintages. We'll have to wait and see.

After 2010 I will only keep the designs that I like unless the mintages drop like a rock later.

Yep, but no 5 oz cool looking silver coins that actually are affordable AND low mintage!

You are a fool if you actually believe these won't see nice premiums. I plan on keeping mine and not flipping them.

You can't compare low-mintage gold with low-mintage silver collector coins. They are like apples and oranges. Gold coins always sell in smaller numbers because they cost a lot more. For silver coins, the 2010 collector and bullion ATB's are very low mintage and will do well. Other than the 1995-W silver eagle and the 2008 reverse of 2007 silver eagle, these are the lowest mintage modern silver coins, as far as I know. You will regret not getting them years down the road. Remember there will be new ATB collectors later on who will want to get them, driving prices higher. Please stop worrying about the price of silver esp. if you collect the numismatic ATB's. Rising silver (over time) is just a bonus.

That means just under 20k orders today so assuming maybe 3k orders for other stuff, 17k ATBs ordered. About the same as HS and Yellowstone. 2-3 weeks for sell out.

As someone suggested, the data posted earlier on 2006-2008 W AGE does not include 4 coin sets and the 8-8-08 set (Buffalo 1/2 and 08 1/2). The key point to know is 2008 W coins are the keys to the proof and burnished series except for the 1/2 ounce W where the 2007 is the key. If anyone has the correct figures for everything, please post and if possible give source. It is crazy that there is no good published source for this info. Thanks.

when you break up a set of 4 AGE and sell it individually or sell your 1/4 oz without box and c.o.a. then the price will be very much different. example apmex is selling 2007w burnished uncirculated with box and c.o.a. at $995.00. without box and c.o.a. at $829.00 each.
nowadays. with box and c.o.a. is very important.

modern commemorative silver dollars with box and c.o.a. quoted at CNN bid $35.00 ask $37.00. that's mean retail price is well over $40.00. but you can get those silver dollars at $32.00 each from apmex. simple the coin with plastic capsule only. see the different.

The coin to own is the 2008 W $10 1/4 ounce AGE with the lowest mintage of all AGE of 8,883. It is even lower than any of the fractional buffalo gold coins.

Looking forward to Michael's sales #s for the Yosemite ATB 5 oz coin. I think there will be increasing, not decreasing interest in the series. A years worth of ATBs will cost a collector less than a set of one FS, and the ATBs are much nicer to look at than any non-liberty FS (except a proof Julia Tyler).

  101. Anonymous says

If Yosemite sell under 15k on first day, series DOA.

I find it amusing that so many bloggers here love to speculate on what may or may not happen with US Mint offerings. In this particular case, it is amusing to read about the future of the ATB 5 Ounce Coins and how they will prosper or fail.

I will wait for the facts to surface, hopefully today, about the first-day sales of the Yosemite P coin. That should at least give us an indication of demand for this particular coin compared to the previous 2 offerings.

  105. Anonymous says

You couldn't give me a hideous looking Eliza Johnson, even if the total sales were 1.
Let's see, what do Americans want, mug shots of presidents wives or artwork on a large palate of silver depicting our national parks at affordable pricing. Run the numbers, ATB will be expensive, but doable. FS is too much $ for butt ugly Maggie, Eliza and co.

  106. Anonymous says

One of the reasons why the UHR coins are hot is because of foreign investors/collectors wanting this one-of-a-kind coin. Overseas demand for this coin seriously, is high. The nice mahogany box helps market its appeal as well.

  107. Anonymous says

The 5 Oz ATB P series will probably sell slower over time as interest in them wane.

From a one day sellout; people are now adjusting and expecting a 2-3 wks sellout. Seriously, it's the same people bidding up and creating the false interest in themselves.

I'll look for other coins to collect this yr

  108. Anonymous says

    Anon @ 5:46,

There was never any one day sellout of any of the two P coins. They have all been remarkably consistent, selling out in the 2-3 week range. The only one-day sellout was with the original shipment of bullion coins, on APMEX, due to the horrible distribution situation. Demand for the numismatic coins has been very consistent, and from what other posters are saying based on their order numbers, the Yosemite sales are going to be exactly the same as the Yellowstone and Hot Springs sales.

I'm not sure why there are so many people suddenly trying to "talk down" these coins, I don't remember these kinds of responses for the last two offerings.

  109. Anonymous says

In my opinion the collector versions of the ATB do not even compare with the bullion version! The vapor blasting makes the coin look fake like it’s a piece of galvanized steel. The bullion version looks like silver and has much better aesthetic appeal. Yes the ATB P’s have a lower mintage, but honestly do they really look as good as the bullion versions….? With the P’s not as appealing it makes it more difficult to pay the extra premium for a vapor blasted piece of galvanized or zinc plated steel.

  110. Anonymous says

I think the P versions look fine. At least their finish seems to be consistent, unlike the bullion coins. Some look like proofs, while of those some look even MORE proof-like than others. Still others don't look like proofs at all. Too much variation there.

I still wish the Mint would mess up and use the P dies on some bullion versions, or use the bullion dies without the P on the "vapor-blasted" coins. That would give us something exciting to hunt for.

"This is wrong and I feel NGC is breaking laws"

No laws are being broken. Anyone can put a coin into any package they wish and hope some fool will pay more for it.

NGC is hoping there are a lot of fools out there and there probably are. PT Barnam said it best, "There's a sucker born every minute." A lot of them are paying high premiums for plastic on their coins.

The burnished gold eagles already have premiums. The sleepers are the 1/2 ounce bullion versions. Several have low mintages and some dealers are paying high premiums but other dealers don't look at dates and just treat all bullion alike. So if you are lucky you can find the premiums ones at bullion prices. Like at a coin show where a dealer just bought a bunch and didn't have time to check the dates.

Looking at an auction price of $1.6M for one of the six proof pennies made in 1930, make me wonder if we could consider a mintage of 27,000 ATB coins as rare. Either you are a collector or ivestor, it may be a good time to buy silver. Whichever you blog you could made or loose money. Long term, the silver price is going to go up since paper money will loose value. Lets enjoy your appreciation of different coins.

27K mintage for a silver 5 oz is NOT RARE. It's definately low mintage thou'.

    Hvving said that, 27K distributed evenly to 1 per household ensure anyone who wanted one got one;

  116. Anonymous says

I am not sure I could agree with you. There are many people who wants one but could not afford one. There should be lottery to give out some of the coins for free for the sake of social justice.

  117. Anonymous says

Don't forget that the 27,000 number is the authorized maximum mintage number.

Based on what I'm reading from bloggers here, you have to believe that some of the coins are defective and destroyed. So the actual number of coins that exist would be fewer than 27,000.

  118. Anonymous says

Any classic unique silver commemorative with mintages at 27k or less are worth typically 100X issue price and typically 100X silver content if in descent shape. Granted these are close to 70 years old on average, I know the ATB's will be winners with 27k mintages, just a matter of how much.

I like these coins and I'm in until I can afford not to be. I don't want to flip, I just appreciate them for what they are, a unique modern coin offering. I will collect and pass down to my son. If they gain in value, great. So much the better! If not they are still a valuable part of my collection.

This is what coin collecting is about. I showed my 10 year old son and his friend the HS-P coin the day it arrived. They examined it intently for a good while and still talk about today. That initial impression was priceless!

Good point, 6:16pm. Plus 69 PL and DMPL sets are the highest grade available and will be worth a lot some day esp. in PCGS holders. Some 69 DMPL coins are already worth a lot and have held their value this year and even gone up because of low pop. I have one of those (worth around $1300) which cost me $200 from an AP. No I do not work for them or do I have any special relatiionship with them. I am not sure why the luck of the draw smiled on me and not others but that is life. I would be more upset at the mint and why there is such a difference betweeen coins stuck at the same place with the same machines and same blanks, not the people who sell what is sent to them.
