2013 Great Basin National Park Quarters Three Coin Set

Tomorrow, June 25, 2013 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin sales for the latest America the Beautiful Quarters Three-Coin Set featuring the Great Basin National Park Quarters.

The reverse design of the Great Basin Quarter features a single Bristlecone Pine tree and the rocky glacial moraines where the trees grow. At the design review stage, both the Commission of Fine Arts and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee had recommended this design by Ronald D. Sanders. The obverse carries the 1932 portrait of George Washington designed by John Flanagan.

Each three coin set contains one uncirculated coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint, one uncirculated coin struck at the Denver Mint, and one proof coin struck at the San Francisco Mint. The three coins are mounted on a plastic card, which contains an image from the park on the front, along with a certificate of authenticity and brief descriptions on the back.

The 2013 Great Basin National Park Quarter Three Coin Set is priced at $9.95. There are no stated product limits or household ordering limits.

Oddly, the product page indicates that this product will be available for sale only for one year from the initial on-sale date or until inventory is depleted prior to the one year time frame. While this availability period has been used for other recent product releases, these three coin sets have not carried any availability deadlines in prior years.

This will represent the eighteenth release within the product series. All seventeen of the previous three-coin sets going back to 2010 still remain available for sale on the US Mint’s website. Sales levels range from a low of 12,778 for the most recently released set featuring Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial to a high of 22,225 units for the set featuring Yellowstone National Park.

Oops…, Great Basin Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin just went TBD – guess the price is going up to 50 cents…

  2. Rich says

Ohhhhh…, “Price and on sale date are to be determined. ” cha’ching! Price reduction anyone? Fingers crossed!

  3. thePhelps says

It might be time for the mint to put a sliding price scale on the silver. If it does get adjusted – I am surprised and happy! I’ve only got 4 of these so far and will be happy to buy them on the way down in price.

  4. Dan in Fla says

Not only is the price TBD the date has changed from 6/27/13 Thursday to TBD also. Hopefully that doesn’t mean a delay of our P mint GB.

  5. Dan in Fla says

Also the other prices are still the same 179 dollars for the two 5 ounce coins already released WM and PV coin

  6. Rich says

I saw that Dan, one thing has been for sure this year…, consistently inconsistent (in timing) has been the rule, not the exception.

@thePhelps – “done for a couple of months” – they’ll be NO planning this year Sir, for any of us! The mint hasn’t released any news on the special sets if they are to be released this year and the clock’s ticking.., and if there were an across the board price cut, that changes up my wish list! I need a bigger wallet!

  7. says

To try to get back on topic, the stuff about the one-year timeframe for the three coin set may be a new marketing tactic to try to boost demand for the three coin sets. Alternatively, it might just be a typo or cutting/pasting error. People have recently pointed out some errors in the Mint’s product pages.

  8. Dmitriy says

I just ordered my 5oz GB bullion from Provident. Shipping is slated to begin on 7/03 for the bullion.

  9. KEITHSTER says

2 4 R $ went in on 20th the teller said he thought they would be in but were not but to call the next day . called on thursday yep they were in got three went back on friday same teller said how many you want can I get four rolls let me see he says yep got um. They use to only let you have one or two must be people are giving up on them?. My place always has them 7 to 10 days after release and then only for about a week so it’s a short window of finding them or there gone. But I’ve gotten all except the first missed the window on that one as many as i wanted had to go back a few times and to other tellers . Wish I could let you all in on the how to but that would take most of the fun out of it but it can be done:> Good luck All

  10. high low silver says

I just got my bullion PV from Provident and want to get it out of the holder !!! Not a good looking 5 oz coin at all !! Streaks , apparent finger print , NOT GOOD!!…. OBV looks OK tho…….. got it open now. WOW !! Horrable !!!!!!!!!!

  11. Eddie says

I always get the three quarter set. The only drawback is you pay nearly $15.00 for .75 cents in money.
My WP Set still has the 06/17/13 ship date. There is no action at the bank showing I have been charged. What POs me is the Mint sends out the big orders and I mean those that ordered pallet loads of them. You would think they would send out the little guys orders first we are the backbone of the Mint aren’t we?

  12. Dan in Fla says

My order from Provident went MIA today as the USPS says it will be here on the 22nd of June and today went by with no deliveries. From the sounds of this post I don’t want to see them.
On the WP sets it doesn’t surprise me that the Mint shipped the large orders first. It always happens that way.

  13. Dan in Fla says

I purchased an AGE w burnished from the Mint on 6/12/13. They shipped the coin as usual but upon arrival I noticed a shiny spot on the reverse rim, a flaw. I thought that I could live wiith that but upon loupe inspection I found different. Not only was the reverse flawed the obverse had a little hole right next to the L in Liberty. Between the L and the stars on the obverse. I called the Mint and this AGE is history. Hopefully they won’t send this one to anyone else.

  14. stephen m says

Dan, I saw that. Someone told me that Silvertown owns Coin Vault? Coin vault is showing the WP sets tonight and both coins blew me away. I’m sure they will sell a boatload of these. Very nice!

  15. Dmitriy says

I just opened my PV 5ozer from Provident and the condition is pretty bad. Swirl marks, cloudiness, marks, etc… Did anyone order from APMEX and receive a coin in good condition? I’m really surprised because my WHite Mountain coin was flawless (minus a milk spot). Is it possible that this is how they received the coins from the mint?

  16. says

I received my 10 WP sets today. The Enhanced Uncirulated coin is awesome. From the pics I’d seen, I really coundn’t tell how the coin would look in hand. What surprises me is that the field of of coin actually has a semi-proof like reflection.

The 10 Enhanced coins all looked liked 70’s to me.

The reverse proofs…I’m not as confident. While they were spotless and mark free, the obvevse had an uneven finish in the field. I’m talking abount looking at the coin under direct light with a loop…but all 10 coins look identical. I think I’ll sell two sets in OGP and send in 8 sets to NGC for grading.

I’ve got two remaining orders…one for a single set and one order on the last day for three.
I plan to keep one set in OGP.

I also bought three sets from Silvertowne @289.95…PCGS 70 First Strike Flag label.

I just wanted to cover my bases as my coins from the SF set graded very poor…I guess It’s the luck of the draw…for the 2011 25th Ann. Sets I got abour 80% 70’s, which was above average. For the 2012 SF sets I got about 17% 70’s…well below average.

    Good luck to all!!

  17. VABEACHBUM says

I really like the way the Mint changed to the photo cards for these sets. But, again, it would have been nice to this type of packaging consistently from the first Hot Springs coins of 2010. When was the last time the Mint had packaging consistency across an entire, long-term series??

With regards to the other side-bars, my WP Set still shows back-ordered to ship on 06/17, with no signs of change. Hmmm. I took delivery of my 5 oz WM and PV bullion coins from APMEX. WM was Choice; no complaints. PV had bad scuff marks on the Obverse. George looked like he lost a knife fight!!!

  18. fmtransmitter says

Silver spot getting killed daily! I don’t watch gold but sure they both are getting hit. Great time to buy, BAD time to try and sell. This is truly a chess match. Got a brand new PV quarter for change. Stuck that in the old collection drawer. Asked all my co-workers to save them for me if they get them. Waiting for an “in hand” date for my 70 retro’s for AE 2013 set. Fingers crossed. Love that retro holder. Bought 5 “bars” of bullion, got 5 “rounds” today in the mail, ugh. These dealers must be busy!! Never had a problem before. I decided to keep them as price was low AND I had just bought AE air tites to put my AE’s in OGP in. That Mint holder is loose and lets moisture in. My AE’s start to tarnish right away. I’ll keep the OGP holders if I sell but for storage they are going in those air tites along with my mis shipped rounds…Good luck all and thanks for comments about the AE Enhanced. I knew that background was going to be mirror like by the pictures I saw.

    Lucky Steve,

The mint hasn’t even shipped my WP sets out yet. Still says 6/17. Lucky for me I ordered some PCGS70’s and got an email saying that they shipped today. What’s up with that????? Big boys rule the game.

  20. Louis says

    @Steve- Congrats!

@VAB- Since you had asked about it, I though I would mention I received my order from the French Mint today. It took a few weeks to ship but then it literally only took a couple days from when it was sent and was fully trackable. The French values set is awesome, and the case is terrific. It’s almost museum quality and really enhances the experience. I got another case for a different French series I collect, and it is truly magnificent too.

  21. VABEACHBUM says

A quick off-topic for CO and others who might be interested. The RAM has listed their second, “Southern Skies – Pavo” concave / convex coin. Looks to be as good as the Crux issue of 2012.

I sure hope the US Mint is asking questions and taking notes as they prepare for the 2014 Baseball Commemoratives!!!

  22. VABEACHBUM says

Louis – Thanks for the update. Congrats on the purchase!!! I wavered on that set a couple times, but finally walked away. I’m sure I’ll be kicking myself several times. Any chance we might see an article with some pics in future??

  23. Louis says

VAB- I’m not sure as I already discussed the set in an earlier piece. By the way, you can still order the coins from the Mint. Dealers are starting to list them too, but of course at a higher price.

  24. says

VaBeachED, that’s true, but Goldmart charges $28 for shipping of two sets…Silvertowne had free shipping….so it comes out about the same. Also, I had bought from Silvertowne las year and they also send you the OGP.

  25. Gary says

RE: The original topic of this post

Anyone notice the beautiful & relevant packaging on this 3 coin set of circulating quarters?

  26. IPS_STUFF says

It appears that Silvertowne is sold out of the 70 graded sets – only have 69’s available that I see this morning. Sold GOLDMART may be the option if you want 70 graded set

  27. thePhelps says

@Rich – thanks for reminding me. I am still waiting for the commemorative generals “special” as well as the Roosevelt offering… but the mint hasn’t even hinted what these might be so far.

  28. Jon in CT says

There is a Federal Register notice due to be published tomorrow from the Mint announcing the price of a mystery product at https://s3.amazonaws.com/public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2013-15269.pdf

The product’s name is 2013 Girl Scouts of the USA Young Collector Set and its price will be $54.95. I guess it includes an uncirculated Girl Scouts commemorative silver dollar and maybe a coloring book. I wonder how many “young collectors” can afford to spend $55 for a single product.

  29. EvilFlipper says

With PM’s dropping hard and the mint not budging much on their spreads I’m hard pressed to make any purchases until I see near final mintages and that’s only on currently popular products. I feel like its really the mint flipping to collectors hahahaha! Big spreads leave us flippers out. It’ll have to be a very selective market. I’m only looking to purchase a west point set now and that’s on the low end of the secondary market. I believe someone’s gonna flip to me at a loss on fleaBay!!

  30. EvilFlipper says

And yes I see them on eBay for 190.00 right now….. But I’m a very patient man

  31. Rich says

Thanks Jon in CT – that was very timely! I’ve been trying to recall where I saw something about the 5-Star General’s Comm Set –

“The bureau will also offer a 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program special product. However, products comprising the set and the final mintage limit for the set have not yet been finalized.” – March 29

  32. Brian says

The Girl Scout young collector’s set will be $1.00 less than the uncirculated coin by itself.

  33. Louis says

A bit of progress on the WP sets finally:
One order says “in stock and reserved” so it should ship soon,
and the other says backordered and shipping 6/17, so who knows on that one,
but I may cancel it anyway as I also have a graded set coming.

  34. Ikaika says

    @ Louis

Glad to hear someone got their order “in stock and reserved”. I did place an order for one set in the first hour of sale but the ship date is still 06/17/2013. I also wonder whats going on? Did anyone get their coins yet?

  35. thePhelps says

My May 9th order has moved from a 7/25 ship to the 6/17 ship date and is still in backorder status.. 7/25 – 7/11 – 6/24 to 6/17 – the 6/17 date was actually rather surprising since it changed to that date late last week – after the 6/17 date had already passed.

  36. Dan in Fla says

My three orders placed early on are now slated to ship. At least two of them are now marked as in stock and reserved but with the ability to cancel still open. My third order I cancelled.

  37. vaughnster says

I just got off the phone with a Mint rep. I have four orders that still have the 6/17 ship date. She talked to a supervisor and said no more orders are going to be filled until July 2nd, no matter what the ship date reads. Don’t know why the ship date doesn’t move back as it usually does for back ordered items. I received my bullion Perry’s Victory ATB from Provident this morning and can’t complain to much. The obverse is very nice but the reverse looks like it was wiped but is not that distracting. Remember, it is a bullion coin.

  38. fosnock says

The ship date for one of my WP coins moved to 08/08/2013. I got a Perry from Provident. It had a small issues with the Doric column.

  39. VABEACHBUM says

@ Vaughnster – Thanks for that feedback on you recent chat with the Mint.

Disappointing, for me, too, as the order I placed for ONE SET within the first hour of sales still has that same 6/17 status and appears destined to suffer a similar fate. July 2nd is a joke, though, as there’s no way we’ll see much of anything moving during that week of the 4th of July. Mid July at best.

I don’t do the TPG thing, but I’m sure that quite a few loyal Mint customers are going to be extremely upset about missing that FS / ER designation through no fault of their own. Makes me wonder if the Mint followed their own FIFO process, or if maybe certain entities received some head-of-line priviledges?? How many of those incredible Pre-Salers will be forced to rescind their FS / ER offers after the fact??

  40. thePhelps says

I am also bit baffled by the mint pushing regular orders back and shipping pallets of WP to resellers first… really is starting to look like they are in the pockets of the resllers at this point. So much for the FIFO as stated on their website… FS / ER are going to be fine – if your scheduled to get the shipped in the next couple of weeks it won’t be an issue… although I have no love of those useless labels.

I also got my Perry today from Provident… looks like it was wiped with steelwool. It is bullion as mentioned already – but odd that it seems the shipment Provident got seems plagued with scratches. I think I’ll look elsewhere on my next – haven’t had great luck with them so far.

  41. says

I see where the Buffalo Proof coin just dropped $100. As of today it is $1640.00. I am THINKING again if I can scrape together that price! I so want BOTH of those Buffalo coins this year but have so many others that I also want! If only the high priced coins were spread out better. I also love the spouse coins and no date for them!
I have the 5 oz. Great Basin coin on my next order list and so I hope it has a release date again soon!
I am disappointed that my order for the WP coin sets were moved back from a ship date of 7/11 to 7/25! From all I hear and read I am anxious to see the one coin (three finishes). I guess I will see it first on TV. Special value of the day.

  42. Michael in Bama says

Sounds like someone is donating to the rite cause. Must be nice to receive your coins a full 2 weeks before the public. I will be contacting my congressman next week in person and ask if he can get an answer to these shipping problems for me. I think this is a load of BS and we are all fools!!!!!
