2014 Presidential Dollars Uncirculated Set

Tomorrow, May 6, 2014 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the 2014 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set.

2014 Presidential Dollars

The product includes uncirculated quality coins featuring the 29th to 32nd Presidents of the United States of America, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. There are eight coins included in each set, with coins from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints containing the “P” and “D” mint mark for each President.

The obverse of each coin includes a portrait of the President, along with inscriptions of the President’s name, the motto “In God We Trust”, the order of the Presidency, and the dates served. On the reverse of each coin is an image of the Statue of Liberty with inscriptions “United States of America” and “$1”. The edge of each coin contains incuse lettering with the date, mint mark, and motto “E Pluribus Unum”.

packagingAll eight coins are packaged within a display folder with biographical sketches and portraits of each President. The packaging allows the obverse, reverse, and edge of each coin to be viewed within a protective, rotatable, blister.

Pricing is $16.95 per set plus applicable shipping and handling. Orders fulfilled through the US Mint’s Online Subscription Program are eligible for a discounted price of $15.25. There are no product limits or household ordering limits imposed.

The new product will represent the first appearance of all four 2014 Presidential Dollars in “uncirculated” quality. Next week on May 13, the uncirculated coins will be released within the full 2014 United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set. In recent years, the US Mint has used a higher quality brilliant uncirculated finish for coins included in the various uncirculated coin sets.

The US Mint has previously released “circulating quality” examples of $1 coins featuring Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge within numismatic bags, rolls, and boxes as well as the First Day Coin Covers. Proof versions of all four of the coins have been released within the 2014 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set, 2014 Proof Set, and 2014 Silver Proof Set.

Is it just me or does FDR look unrecognizable?

    From previous thread:

@Pittsburgh P – Calling the ATBs pucks is no longer derogatory, just like “circus coin” is now becoming a sign of affection for the BHOF coins, but the term originally was very very negative.

  2. Pittsburgh P says

@Sith agreed on both points… FDRs facial features are very unbecoming on this coin also…

  3. Jafmidtx says

Were all the HOF Silver proof and unc minted at the same facility – P or will there be different mint marks on these coins ?

Well, you don’t want to select a portrait that looks too much like the dime, but yeah, they should have used something like this:

    😉

  5. VA Rich says

FDR looks like he’s at the Thanksgiving dinner table.., trying not to let loose a “room clearer”

  6. VA Rich says

Going back a couple of days on the subject of graded clads looking remotely like a coin worth grading, I did something I didn’t think I would do (though the dynamics of the circus have changed dramatically in the past week), and bought a couple PCGS 70 UNC clads and a Proof. The Uncs looks good, real good. The proof is similar to the ones I was commented on last week as having appearance of surviving the great world war. I’m posting this to tie with whom ever was discussing it, as they’re coming back like a box chocolates, you don’t know what’cha gonna get – Happy Hunting!

  7. Raphael says

All HOF Silver proof and unc are to be minted minted at (P)hila. The Half $ clad unc is minted in Denver and Half $ clad Proof in San Francisco. I keep track of my order of the Silver coins and it seems the mint every other day delays the delivery date of the Silver Coins by another 2 days. Last week the deliver days went from 13 May, to 15 May, to 18May. Today date change to 20May, by the time they finish they may arrive in time for Christmas. Yet I saw on TV where one of the big auction houses claims they received their 1000 coin order(Clad Proof half’s) not long after the program start and got them ANA Graded(on a coin that according to the mint site has a 100 coin per household orderlimit).

  8. VA Bob says

VA Rich – I believe if someone gets a marginal 70, it’s going to be apparent after the feeding frenzy is over and cooler heads are looking at the coins. It also does no favor to the TPG handing out the grade IMO. Of course there will always be a buyer that will look at the label and not the coin, so the down side for the person selling may be small. It boils down to what the owner is comfortable living with.

  9. Raphael says

On FDR’s coin, it seems he looks more like LBJ, find a photo of Johnson with eyeglasses on.

  10. Clark says

Yep, they really missed the mark with FDR…looks more like Tom Bosley or Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. Or, maybe they’re just using Eleanor on both the FS and presidential coins .

  11. CasualCollector says

@VA Rich – I agree that the clads that are true MS70’s do look good. The PROOF Clads are spectacular when they are True PR70’s (imho). Almost like a little brother to the Silver Proofs which are amazing themselves when you can get them without hairlines, scratches, or black “grease” streaks..

I’m just finding it difficult to pay current market rates for an MS70 Clad. I mean I can buy about 6 to 7 UNC Clads from the Mint for the same amount and chances are I should get at least one MS70 in the bunch…

  12. thePhelps says

I see no reason to buy a MS70 or PF70 clad at any price right now. In about 6 months those will be a heck of a lot cheaper as several hundred thousand coins hit the street. The only time it makes sense is when it is obvious there will be very few coins grading 70 and so far we just don’t know.

  13. CasualCollector says

I’m hoping the Mint removes the 100-coin household limit on the BHoF clads. And then MLB Steps up to the plate and buys the remaining quantity (all in Proof). That would catapult the Clads up the eBay charts real fast…

  14. VA Rich says

CC/tP – I totally agree, I just hedged my position. If I don’t get anything back with darn, then I’ll be able to complete my PCGS set along with my OGP set. If I do.., oh trust me, one will fly soon.

While we’ve discussed this before, and I really have an appreciation for OGP, I have to admit the OGP across these 6 coins rather leaves much desired.., I would have gladly paid extra for a Six-Pack box or a wooden bat or something, especially for the $5s!

  15. Jerry Diekmann says

FDR on this coin doesn’t look like he did in life. He looks like he might have looked if he had lived to the age of 80 or so. Who came up with this poor rendition of FDR? You would think someone at the MInt didn’t like FDR and tried to make him as old and as ugly as they could. Why not create a coin with his likeness, and beaming, as he was in the 1930s, not some caricature of a dying man like at Yalta in 1945?

  16. VA Rich says

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here for a moment, or perhaps just the voice of reason for those sitting on the fence at the last hour wondering whether to submit or leave sealed, etc. – in light of the mint’s current shipping dilemma and what is so easily gleaned from the comments in Louis’ article from today, I would send it in, send it all in as along it passes the gut check and you have something else coming in to replace it for the OGP set. I’d send in the bag if I could – not a prop for TPGs.., just hate to see anyone miss out on what’s unfolding at the moment. I’m sure I’m going to get blasted for saying that, but this may be the one time to beat the retailers at their own game, that’s how I see it.

  17. Dustyroads says

You have to think about FDR’s inability to walk when you look at this portrait, then the pulled back head makes more since. It is an important part of history, even if he didn’t want it seen at the time.

I don’t believe it’s that easy to find am MS70 clad. I would like add one , but there’s no way at these prices, way to risky. I may buy a few later, but have no expectation of coming across a 70, proof or clad.

  18. VA Rich says

Ray – you asked, here ya go Partner – PCGS summary (order placed 12:01)

    $5 PRF – 7 of 12 graded 70, or 58%
(two withholds, one had an indentation in the glove palm by the thumb; the other had glob of gold in the field above the middle finger)

    $5 UNC – 4 of 6 graded 70, or 67%
(one withhold, had gold pimple in the upper palm of glove)

    $1 PRF – 0 of 4 graded 70
    (3 withholds for various issues)

  19. Ray says

These marginal, or inaccurately graded 70s, will probably be followed up late this year with the new “70+” designation by the TPGs. Nobody likes a moving target. I’d love to see images of 70s that arent really 70s.

I agree that it is not a flattering pic of FDR. It could be based on this photo from National Archives:

Not even close. The coin has him facing in a different direction with his lips pursed (i.e. you can’t see his teeth).

  21. Pittsburgh P says

Ot – Mr. John Mercanti is gonna be in Pittsburgh speaking on Friday. I’m gonna try to catch what he’s got to say and have him sign a few of my ASE certificates or somthing.

  22. posterhunter says

FDR looks more like Joseph Biden, the current Vice President, wearing glasses. Someone must have been confused and used him as the model, lol.

  23. merryxmasmrscrooge says

I agree with Sith and Pittsburgh P FDRs features look unrecognizable. When you look closely, such a great icon has been sculpted with beady eyes and fat chin! Maybe they used a picture after he ate a big bowl of grilled millionaire.

  24. MarkInFlorida says

I ordered the gold eagle set in my wife’s name because I had a lot of HoF items pending and didn’t want too many charges hitting the same week, and her order has been “on hold” for 4 weeks. We called today and the Mint lady said we should have gotten a letter in the mail requesting certain information to verify her order (because it is gold) and they won’t ship the gold until the letter is answered, but they don’t know if it was sent or when it might be sent. The charge was pending on the credit card for a few days and then disappeared. Anyone else have such an experience? She ordered gold and platinum in 2008 without problems.

  25. Dustyroads says

Amazing BHOF gold prices, glad I paid Mint price. I’ll be watching this one for years to come!

I have looked on the net, but have been unable to find any photos or portraits that resemble this one used on the FDR dollar. Originally I assumed the chosen dollar design with what looks to me like a pulled back head had something to do with his weak legs, but all of the pictures I could find look quite natural.

  26. Clark says

Well, after following the informed BHOF discussions here, I’ve decided to keep all my $5 gold MS/PF70s and not sell my extras. I realize this is probably the best time to sell and that prices will deflate once the mint starts fulfilling orders, however, they are so stunning that I feel compelled to keep them for many years. That they all have the silly ‘early releases’ label means nothing to me, but it will mean something to label collectors because relatively few BHOF coins were available to grade before the ER submission deadlines this week.

I do think the $1 silver proof is a strong candidate for coin of the year, if not coin of the decade. I kept several in OGP, but I must admit that it looks even more impressive IMHO in the extra thick NGC holder which lets in light from all angles and just feels like a big chunk of silver in your hand, even though it’s still only 1 tr oz.

In OGP or NGC holders, the silver BHOF is unlike any other US coin I’ve owned. I guess that’s why I just don’t want to part with them.

  27. Ray says

Thanks VA Rich. Kind of a rough result for the $1s. Hopefully you have some more to submit, or more coming to submit later. Thx again for sharing your results.

  28. CasualCollector says

@Clark — I agree the Silver Proof is stunning and it is also one of my favorite coins. I like the feel of the OGP over the NGC case, but agree that both look really good. Side note — they are not 1 TR Oz. of Silver — they have a little more than 24 grams of silver in each…

  29. Dave says

Third try to post this – other two “vaporized” in the cloud?

I thought it was LBJ too when I gave a casual glance before reading the article!

  30. Pittsburgh P says

The Mints shipping dates for the BHoF coins are rolling… In the wrong direction! You’d think they’d have this problem fixed by now… My 1:27 gold proof order moved back a week to 6/30 and the silvers I got days later jumped months… One is in the middle of August!!! Its laughable.

  31. KEITHSTER says

Commenting on the looks looks like they are all in on it franklin looks to have his odor in process ;herbert having heard ready to crack a smile or another one seems to have gotten to warrens eyes that or he just smoked a fat one?And calvin looks to find out who did what but the deal is done and we get what we get. Don’t look any better on the next batch:(
As to the bhof mine frist ones should be ok staying sealed Good Luck To Us All:>:>:>

  32. says

@ Pittsburg P, My 1:15 Golds all moved back 1 week to 06/30. My Silver Proofs moved to 08/14 and Silvers Uncirculateds moved to 07/03. Some Clad Proofs 06/01 or 06/21 and ALL Clad Uncirculated 06/21

  33. CasualCollector says

@Pittsburgh P – there’s something wrong because my Friday Night Gold order that I thought had no chance at 7/17 has moved up to 5/21/14. I still don’t feel good about my chances of getting these golds (one of each)

  34. Pittsburgh P says

@CC I know there is but like I said it should be fixed by now! It hasn’t effected any of my other orders, only BHoF coins… Hope you get your order though. Whenever they decide to ship!

Also, I have gotten all silver and clads from orders 1:27 and prior. Likd cag just waitin on the golds. The silvers are from several orders days later… Clads are the same as cags dates and havn’t moved… I’m just hopin they’re messing with the dates cause they’re gettin ready to ship some! Fingers crossed

  35. says

@Pittsburg P, I hope you are right. It does seem that the last time dates started going backwards for early orders and going forward for later orders that shipments were just getting ready to start again and that there really is No rhyme or reason to the dates. Seems like when this happened before it took a day or two of constant changes before things settled out.

  36. VA Dave says

Jeez! My order, 3/27 3pm sharp moved from 6/21 to 6/30. Are they making these by hand? Is there anyone with connections at the Mint that can get the staight story on what’s going on? I thought the 2011 25th anniversary set took a while to sort out – this has that one beat big time.

  37. Sith says

All my BHOF have moved…a gold proof just went to 5/22 (order was place on Friday the 28th right before 4 o’clock) The silver BHOFs just went to 7/24 and 8/14, and the clad just went to 6/21

  38. Ray says

My gold proof hof coin changed its ship date from 7/7 to 5/21. My order was placed at 2pm on the 28th.

My silver proofs moved from Late May to 8/14. My Silver Uncs moved from late May to 7/17.

  39. Pittsburgh P says

Seems early gold orders moved back while ones later moved up! As I said before hope they start goin out soon. Since last time dates moved in screwed up movements they started shipping!

  40. Sith says

Pittsburgh P – It looks that way I just wish the mint would be more consistent, IE earlier orders move forward late orders with a snow balls chance in hell move back or stay the same. The shipping dates reminds me of a monkey humping a football.

  41. Steven says

right those shipping dates means nothing. They ship when they ship, we get them when we get them.

  42. Mk says

I heard they were stopping the presses in order to produce more mint bags…but that’s just a rumor…

  43. Dave says

My orders are getting jerked around, too:

3/27 1:15 PM proof & Unc golds now 6/30 ship

    4/6 4:55 PM proof clad now 6/1

    4/6. 4:59 PM proof silver now 8/21 ?????

It cannot be lack of blanks, unless they are special in size due to curvature.
Are the dies (dyes?) failing too quickly?
Did they really have no clue this issue would be popular?
Louis, Michael , someone with connections – could you get some info from reliable sources?
    Thanks in advance
Oh, Louis, your last article someone posted here was awesome!

  44. Dave says

Suggestion to the Mint – take down the “expected to ship” portion of the Item Status section in the order tracking section. It is damaging to your image and frustrating to the customer. SOMEONE in the government has to have the ability to fix this quickly. My son is IT for GA Legislature and could fix this in a matter of hours (if not minutes!)

  45. Sith says

I don’t think it’s a lack of blanks as the clads are the farthest pushed back…their is method to the madness, but just take the mint’s word that the system is busted, as Steven says they will ship went they ship…

  46. Louis says

Thanks, Dave. Just asked yesterday, but no response yet. I agree it’s maddening and makes no sense. At least tell us what the real problem is,

  47. Sith says

@Dave – The only issue I have with removing the expected ship date is those date are correct for everything but the BHOF coins.

  48. Dave says

    Sith,
Now that’s pretty telling, isn’t it? How could it work for everything else, but not HOF?
Something’s going on there. An explanation is due and at least taking down the expected for the HOF and inserting something like “experiencing unexpected delay – will provide 2 week notice before shipping” would go a long way toward relieving anxiety and confusion (IMHO, FWIW)

  49. Ray says

    Dave,
the same thing happened with the 2013 Silver Eagle sets. Honestly, I’m not sure their ship date ever worked for runs like this. I’m a newb.

  50. says

All my Silvers have moved back to where they started the day – 05/21; Golds still 06/30; Clads all over the board – Early orders show 07/07 and later orders show 06/21

  51. Leo S says

Ordered on the First Day – All silver proof ordered on the first day has changed from 5-20 to 6-6 and the Unc. has changed from 5-20 to 6-19. The gold has changed from proof 7-17 to 6-30 and the unc. from 7-07 to 6-30. One of the later silver orders has changed from 5-20 to 9-4. It seem a little strange to have to wait 6 months for something ordered in March. I’m afraid to call the Mint again as they may change me to December or cancel my order altogether. What is going on?????

  52. Dustyroads says

OT~ I haven’t heard anything about whether or not the Panama Pacific Commemorative coin program will be launched in 2015.
When written about by the MintNewsBlog back in 2012, it was lacking support in Congress, but seamed like a great thing to do at the time. I’m guessing the Mint decided not to do it.
Like the rest of you, I have a silver BHOF order that I made just before the sale out, it’s been moved back to August, I don’t mind.

  53. Hidalgo says

I’ve been reading the comments about shipping dates. Just wondering – does it matter WHEN you receive your coins? I guess it would matter if you plan to have them graded by a third party grader (to receive the “Early Release” designation).

  54. Louis says

The 2015 commem programs are already set in stone- Marshall service and march of dimes.

  55. stephen m says

Business as usual for the mint. I ordered early and have 2 proof golds and two silver proofs BBHOF. I’ve looked at them twice and then they were put away. It is said all good things come to those that wait. I think the expression originates at the US Mint from the early days. Good luck all.

  56. gary says

I’ve simply given up on the status checking my BHOF orders. The expected shipping dates drift back & forth. My BHOF proof gold was set for 7/7, now it’s 6/30. The unc gold ship dates have varied about every other day & the unc silver went from 5/16 gradually to 6/30. Since I’m not getting them TPG it really doesn’t matter all that much anyhow I suppose. The Mint should just state “shipping in May. June, July, etc. and leave it specifically vague rather than use a date which moves like the wind.

  57. Pittsburgh P says

@hidago FS/ER for BHoF coins are now done. Today is the deadline actually but thats not why I want my coins… if I order something from anywhere I expect to receive whatever when I’m told I will get my product! I guess you are different. I have a display I made with 5 coins in it with a spot for the uncirculated gold empty…. I also have others I bought coins for asking me what’s going on. I gave two people their money back. I don’t really mind that since now I can keep them but that wasn’t the plan & even though they know the reason I look bad because I said they’d have it cause I was told I’d have it on 4/16… It’s 5/6 now and I’ll have to wait another 6 weeks by the mints broken calculations. Tell me upfront you didn’t prepare or foresee demand. So that is WHY it matters WHEN I get my coins and it’s not grading or flipping since I got what I paid for family and freinds.

Nowadays, commemorative coins require the authorization of laws passed by Congress and signed by the President. But I agree that the Mint seems to treat the United States Code as merely a set of suggestions instead of requirements. As for the apparent lack of support in Congress for this particular commemorative, maybe there are people in Congress who are still pissed that Carter gave away the Panama Canal Zone. 🙂

Just thought I’d pass along the results of Silver HOF coins I received from the Denver gift shop. I sent 10 to NGC.
    7 proofs….4-70’s…….3-69’s
    3 unc….2-70’s….1-69

I’m still awaiting results of coins I sent to PCGS. Five gold proofs & two silver proofs. PCGS received them on 4/17, so it shouldn’t be much longer.

  62. mark says

Sent 18 out of the 20 silver proofs from my 3/27 12:09 ET to NGC. They received them today. Will post results.

Still think it looks like someone from the production line or that knows the production #’s is sleeping with some of the big boy’s! Hence after the cigarette the true number of ready to ships are exchanged since they can’t buy them all you buy all of the ready to go’s you can and try to corner the market on your best seller the ER/FS 70’s. Knowing full well after that limit is reached it will be awhile for the next batch and the time to summit will have elapsed as like today. Not that I care that much but enough to keep mine in the box that are eligible. Just like the San Frans but think the Mint is catching on to the insider info trade hence the last min. limit not enough to stop it but enough to let tiny tim get a few and give them the what you takin about willis excuse? So if you got any of the fist ones keep them sealed if you can and get used to it as it seems to be the norm now! Might even have to join someday just to get rid of the sealed boxes can’t see selling them on the bay and the first guy to buy one goes o that’s where that sucker lives how do you guys live with that? Would rather just go shopping with the bag and take my chances Sorry But Good Luck Anyway:>:>:>

  64. MarkInFlorida says

Anyone know if gold is going up tomorrow? I might cancel my wife’s order and order myself on Thursday with other new releases.

  65. VA Bob says

The Mint can make the Panama coins outside the commemorative program, just like they are with the Kennedy coins, special ASE sets, and the 2009 UHR.

  66. Dustyroads says

You know Keithster, that’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

A great Pan Pac coin would be one made of Palladium. I can’t remember the last time that metal was losing value, and with so many counties around the world not giving a flying flip about air quality, you would think that maybe, say China would start using Palladium for something.

  67. MK says

@VaR-I have 5 chewed up or scratched proof clads that I received. One from the mint itself and the others from the Denver Mint. Just a theory, but I would guess the Denver Mint clads had been picked over. Regardless, I didn’t send any in for grading as I thought it would be a waste of money. Maybe I should have sent them in especially if your 70 Is scratched. I have more on order so ill see what the next batch looks like.

  68. VARich says

Geez, even Goldmart is getting in on it & has $5’s en route

KEITHSTER ~ always enjoy your post, always a bit of wisdom in there & totally agree about the risk of selling sealed…, yeah, I’d rather tote the bag, in your case though, you may want to consider contacting the purchasing manager of MCM, GM, or Silvertown.., they might really be willing to work with you directly or offer a slabbed trade with cash back, & avoid ebay fees and shat not, just a thought, good luck to you!

  69. VARich says

MK~ what ever you decide, good luck! I won’t say it’s hopless, though it’s becoming apparent that NGC is grading a lot looser than PCGS, & PCGS is letting some slide.

Come Sunday morning, I’m going to do a side-by-side comparison between inhand OGP, NGC, & PCGS across all options excluding the $5 Unc, & that will reveal a lot.

The mint has lost control. I just checked on an order for 4 1 dollar proofs placed 4-7 and it says canceled. What the hell the mint has gone crazy. I give up a week a go it said back ordered till June explain that one?????

  71. Dave says

    Mike,
My April 6 proof silver HOF is now August ship. Not cancelled. Better not be, either.ordered way before sell out announced.

  72. Dave says

Ship dates are important! I sent my silver order to my daughter’s house because we were supposed to be there during the shipping period. Now we will be home.
How many of you have tried to change the ship to address after the order is in? It takes a color copy of your driver license faxed to the mint, a letter with instructions, and usually several calls to CS to confirm. I went through this last summer with the WP set. No fax machine, so color copy fee, fax fee, and the Office Max folks knowing when I am home and away and that I am dealing with the mint.

Oh, the Mint bag got returned b/c UPS couldn’t get a signature at daughter’s house since we won’t be there until summer – another downside of that silly shipping policy.

I JUST HATE GOVT WASTE!!! The Mint are experts at that 🙁

  73. fmtransmitter says

eBay ALREADY rejected an offer of $1255 for my HOF gold, then a buffoon makes an $850 offer. REJECTED! Duh..lol

  74. SilverFan says

With these fluctuating ship dates, who in their right mind would buy a PRESALE HOF gold or silver coin on eBay?

  75. Pittsburgh P says

@silverfan I said that same thing a few weeks ago but apparently people are doing it! Some if the later order might not even get what they are selling!!!

  76. CasualCollector says

Regarding “sealed” boxes of BHOF Gold on eBay. Why would someone pay $1,200+ for sealed coins vs. just buying a graded NGC 70 for about the same amount (or even for $100 more)? Last night I saw 4 coins (NGC PF70’s) sold between $1,175 – $1,301. And yesterday evening MCM on eBay sold 8 of the NGC PF70’s with the “Nolan Ryan Signature” for $1,389

  77. Pittsburgh P says

CC I guess its all in what the buyer wants… I agree with what you’re sayin though but there’s no ryhme or reason to what’s goin on… IMO payin a few hundred more for a fake Hall of Famer’s signature label is insane!

  78. CasualCollector says

@Pittsburgh P – agreed on the fake signature labels. So why are people paying thousands more for a “Baltimore” label — that’s alot for essentially the “same” coin (if it’s a true 70 it’s a true 70…)

  79. VA Rich says

CC – it’s the heavies buying up these $5’s; they’re taking a long-term position on these coins and recognizing that there’s a good chance they could end up as 4-5 baggers.

I personally think a floor has been established. Regardless, they’re hard to find & don’t last long.

  80. CasualCollector says

One step further — why rush to send in coins now just to get a FS/ER label???

Years from now I’m not so sure the label will matter that much (it might be a slight premium). People who want the coin will just want the “70” (or “69”) coins — assuming the “70” is out of reach. And if it comes with OGP Materials it will be that much better…

  81. CasualCollector says

@VA Rich – from a pure investment viewpoint, if it is the heavies buying with a long term approach I would rather be buying all the 70’s now — not sealed coins for the same money (unless there was a chance for a missing mint mark — which is no longer the case).

  82. merryxmasmrscrooge says

I think the frosted surfaces on the deep cameo designs have become indiscernable. The contrast between proof surface and frost is there, but the texture is too rough. You cannot see the president’s faces that well. This is ok for elderly people with bad eyesight like my grandfather, all they can see is the cameo, and the old man is happy. If you observe with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) you will probably see distinct bumps at least 5 to 10 micrometers high. On the other hand, the cent, nickel, dime, half, and sacagawea you can see the details of their portraits. The quarters are ok. I must have too much free time to write this, I better get back to work!

  83. Pittsburgh P says

@VA rich ues the heavies are buying them all up now but they may be losin on this one when all coins are finally shipped… Yet, at the same time a lot of people will be holding on to these when they get them. So I guess they can charge what they want and if someone buys them so be it. IMO I don’t think these have hit the floor yet already… Close maybe, but they have been fluctuating so much it’s hard to tell. They are a four bagger though!

@CC don’t have an explanation about the Baltimore label… Yes you can look at it as it’s another type of mintage & its in the hundreds(I don’t look at it that way and agree they are the same exact coin) but it has the greatest downside potential because of the outrageously high prices. Only time will tell and personally I’m enjoying the ride…

  84. Joseph says

My orders ‘expected ship date’ were pushed significantly. one jumped from 5/20 to 6/19 and another 2 to 7/24.
what is going on? are we still having any chance to get these coins? anyone has the same???

  85. Pittsburgh P says

@joesph if you read earlier posts you’d see is the norm so I wouldn’t worry… Depending on when you ordered. IMO they’ll just send them in the order of when they were placed whenever they get in… Hope it is before Christmas.

  86. Jim says

I believe the TPG coin label phenomenon is similar to the baseball card craze at it’s peak. Certain cards for a player could be much more valuable than others for that same player.
A star players rookie card, i.e. like the Baltimore label, is normally the most valuable for that player. Eventually the baseball card craze in the 90’s ended badly due to an over-abundance
of different cards by card manufacturers. I think the coin label phenomenon will end the same way someday.

  87. joe says

Glad to see gold drop today…hopefully the London average fix for the past week will be below $1300 so there isn’t a Mint price increase prior to the launch of the proof AGB.

  88. Dave says

Spoke to a Mint CS lady this morning. Asked what’s up with the HOF coins. Answer : they are more difficult to produce and we have other coins scheduled which must be produced. Obviously they don’t really care when Commemorative coins go to collectors. Witness the FS production schedule last year.
From their perspective, the primary focus of the business is to produce coinage for commerce…….even at a loss. Who really cares about the customer? We ARE the government! Here to serve you ??? Uh, yea, when it’s convenient for us. Just relax folks – we’d NEVER lie to you.

  89. Pittsburgh P says

@jim I agree that the label fad will end but when is the question… I may not see it in my lifetime. Your comparison to baseball cards is a bad one IMO though… Since labels can only be made for coins that already have a limited(or not so limited) mintage and need to be at a certain quality… Baseball cards found their demise do too the companies making way too many different types and amounts in the millions of cards. Look at card pre 1960’s and even many pre 80’s. They maintain value and even rise as time passes. Rookie cards being like the Baltimore label is not a good comparison either… For some of the same reasons stated before and at least the coins and the grade have value a stars rookie card from the 90s, in most cases, are barely worth the paper its printed on… Again, I feel the label phenomenon will end also and probably badly for a lot of people who dropped money into it but it may not be for awhile, maybe a long while… IMHO only

What determines how many sets are or can be made (silver allotment etc.)? “This product will be available until December 2015 or until sold out, whichever is first.”

  91. Sith says

@Samuel – It will never happen as per the mints SOP all gold gets shipped separately.

  92. KEITHSTER says

The Mint knows how to play the game they want winners- we need winners makes them look good ya know:) And then we buy more so limit the supply and watch them fight for the scraps? Don’t you think they could have had most ready to go or made them in a day or two they make billions of coins all the time. But to dump them all at once athough fair no wow factor there! And who told you life was fair anyway cause it’s not! So let the Mint play their little games their getting better all the time so us little cats have to just hang on to the tails of the big dogs and see what trickels down? But be carefull as you might not like it? But Good Luck To Us All:>:>:>

  93. Sith says

    @Pittsburgh P – I humbly disagree

“Since labels can only be made for coins that already have a limited(or not so limited) mintage and need to be at a certain quality” – You already address the mintages but as far as quality how rare is a PF70? Also nobody is attacking the coin just the premium paid for the packaging

‘ the companies making way too many different types” – Sounds like labels, first pitch, first strike, signatures, Baltimore,…

“at least the coins and the grade have value a stars rookie card from the 90s, in most cases, are barely worth the paper its printed on. – Nobody would also complain about paying the mint’s issue price, or even secondary market prices if warranted, then add a encapsulated PF70 should have premium over OGP, but why pay a premium on top of that for a Baltimore label. A PF-70 is a PF-70. Again nobody is attacking the coin just the premium paid for the label.

  94. CasualCollector says

@Roy – Authentic Autographs of HOF Players — now that to me adds value. Sort of like price of the coin + price of player’s autograph + premium because it’s a unique piece. In other words I would pay extra for a coin with an Authentic Autograph encapsulated by PCGS. The fact that it is encapsulated by a legit company has a hidden benefit (it’s a real autograph).

  95. fmtransmitter says

Everyday another post to push CR coins on Mint Social Media sights. Those things are collecting dust on the shelves. Glad a message is being sent about what we like and likely will buy. Again imo the reverse was dead on but the obverse stunk. Bring on Marshall’s..

  96. Sith says

@CasualCollector – Agree to a certain extent but it could also limits the coins resale value because you would need someone who likes the player in question and is willing to buy the coin and the signature. It would make a priceless heirloom.

  97. Sith says

@fmtransmitter – They should have learned that lesson from the Girl Scout coin…

  98. Pittsburgh P says

@Sith you don’t seem to disagree with me you are just framing it in a different way… Or maybe you are. Not sure. My only disagreement with Jim was comparing baseball cards to the labels being produced for coins. I wasn’t just talking about the BHoF coin labels but all labels being produced by TPGs in general. So a 70 modern coin may not be rare but a 70 or 69 coin from say 1900 would be. I know there was no attack on the coin itself but the label e.g. the Balitimore label and I am totally 100% behind it being a rip off and ridiculous… As I have stated many times I am not a label collector although they do have legitimate purposes for older, cleaned coins, and fakes. Baseball card companies made as many cards as they could that they felt they could sell and then some… I was saying TPGs can’t do that, even with all different types of labels they must stay within the amount available and the amount submitted…

  99. CasualCollector says

@Sith — true about finding a fan that wants the coin with the autograph (I just don’t think that would be a problem). If a coin collector wants the “Baseball” coin, then I don’t think they are going to mind an authentic Baseball HOF Player’s autograph is included (they just might not pay as much a premium for the autograph as others would). If PCGS limits the number of autographs per player that would be extremely unique (imho). Like Tom Seaver at 311 wins. If PCGS puts aside a series of serial numbers for these authentic autographs — say xxxxxx-001 – xxxxxx-311 — that would would be a nice collectible. And I agree it would make for a priceless heirloom…

  100. says

@Roy, et al, RE: L&C link, I am so sick of these phony TPG’s! Should not PCGS know that is NOT an MS but a PR????????? They really make us look like a bunch of idiots!

  101. says

@2Cents- It’s a sample picture provided by PCGS, not an actual graded coin. I’m guessing someone in their marketing department threw it together too quickly.

  102. Clark says

While we’re sitting around waiting for our BHOF coins to arrive, it is entertaining to speculate about what is behind the as yet unexplained manufacturing & shipping delays across all varieties. Eventually we will know what the actual reasons were, but in the meantime, here are my grossly uninformed guesses for your amusement . Feel free to join in.

    1. Expert European & Australian advisors who assisted with the US Mint’s first production round have gone home and won’t be back for a while. Going at it alone is causing various problems. The quality of BHOF coins minted after the first round may be inferior.

    2. Domed dies used to press our curved BHOF coins are complicated and must be serviced and/or replaced more often.

    3. As a government agency, the US Mint is following the same standard procedure it has always used for commemorative coin production. Early sell-outs of BHOF coins created no sense of urgency to deviate from normal commemorative coin production. You will get your coins when you get them, not when you want them or when the Mint’s website says they will be shipped.

  103. says

@Roger, How does a “sample picture” switch from a proof to an unc? This is much like the Coin Vault selling a gold HOF labeled from NGC as being minted in Philadelphia for $4k. That wasn’t an example.

  104. Bernie in PA says

    Hi All,

I’ve been following this blog since before the start of the BHOF frenzy… I’ve learned a TON from all of you and I’ve gained great perspective on coin collecting. I’m one of those guys who was “sucked in” by a US Mint first (curved coin) and a subject I enjoy (baseball). I got in on day 1 @ 1:12PM. I purchased a full set for myself (Gold, Silver, Clad… PR and UNC) and an additional amount of gold coins PR and UNC. I pre-sold 6 gold coins (3/3 PR/UNC) – wish I hadn’t!!!

Just wanted to put a word of thanks to Michael and all the folks who post on this blog for your insight and for keeping me sane as I await my gold coins (I did receive the two clads and two silvers back in April). I’m expanding my horizons and looking at collecting coins for years to come!

    $5 Unc – 137 x MS69; 210 x MS70

    $1 Proof – 543 x PR69; 1059 x PR70
    $1 Unc – 532 x MS69; 492 x MS70

    $0.50 Proof – 751 x PR69; 392 x PR70
    $0.50 Unc – 489 x MS69; 349 x MS70

  106. says

@2Cents- I assume they simply photoshopped the label onto an existing graded coin and weren’t paying close attention to the grade they put on it.

  107. VA Rich says

227% apprection in 6 weeks for a $1 UNC…, not too shabby for circus coinage…

  108. CasualCollector says

@A&L Futures – Thanks for the PCGS Population numbers. Percentages of 70’s for those clads are really bad. And also the Silver uncirculated.

  109. Mk says

I’ve also decided to stop looking at my “projected” US mint ship dates for awhile. I have 04/09 order for silver uncs now showing est. ship of 09/04… Anyone have a later date?? Anyone? Lol

  110. fmtransmitter says

A lot of new collectors who bought into the US Mint HOF coin getting an age old lesson here…Rather amusing. You get em when you get em and you can cancel at anytime as long as cancel box is present.

  111. Pittsburgh P says

@fmtransmitter it may be a lot of the newer collectors complaining here but IMO many of the collectors who have dealt with the mint for are also… I have vented myself and I know in some of your post you have too. This is by far the worst of all the mints shipping problems, unless you can think of worse? The ASE collectors sets were bad and so on but not this bad. I personally do not find it amusing as you do. It’s not good for new numismatists just beginning with this coin or people dealing with the mint for the first time. It will be driving the new and possibly younger collectors away while it needs to be attracting them! Great advice telling them to cancel also, so then maybe they will regret it or never purchase another coin again. Or maybe they should just go to ebay and buy their coins… IMO they may be learning a lesson, one that they shouldn’t have to learn – no need for you to laugh at them.

  112. Clark says

    @fm–I like #1 too.

I read on another chat board a theory that operatives of the Girl Scouts of America, still smarting from the rebuke of their GSA commemorative silvers, infiltrated the mint and sabotaged our BHOF orders.

More likely, there’s probably only one or two people who know how to troubleshoot the new curved coin equipment and they have to shuttle between West Point, Philly, Denver and San Francisco. Something is definitely wrong, they just won’t tell us.

  113. Pittsburgh P says

@fmtrans after rereading my response it seems like I was attacking you while expressing my opinion. I apologize for my harsh response and in no way was it personal. OT- how’s the back and rehab coming along?

  114. Mk says

@Pitt- I know many aren’t amused by the mints ineptitude, however I’m a relatively new collector of moderns. Prior to that only old, old coinage, and bullion stacking. The delays are frustrating to me, but I will say the baseball coins have sparked my interest in other moderns. I’ve recently purchased quite a few aside from the bbhof coins. Heck, I even bought one of those Mickey Mouse coins.. Lol Point is, I’m still interested and I think other newer collectors are too. IMO- the mint should be postponing some of their other releases such as the FIRST SPOUSES and focus their attention on getting the bb coins out the door.

  115. Mk says

@Clark- girls scouts…lol. I probably would have bought their coin had they fashioned it into a thin mint cookie…

  116. Pittsburgh P says

@mk glad to hear it. Agreed thats what the mint should be doing but I’m sure they will go about business as usual. This is why monopolies are illegal…

Mickey Mouse eh… and can’t say I’d get a Girl Scout thin mint coin cause I’d break a few teeth one late night 🙂

  117. Howard says

I understand the frustration of the bizarre shipping confusion especially because
one might not receive the coin at all. However we are dealing with the government
    and should expect this behavior.

  118. Clark says

@MK–Don’t worry, the mint will put off first spouse production and sales until the end of the year, as they have for the past two years. I am one of the few remaining collectors of MS and PF spouses and am in it too far to stop!

  119. VaBeachSteve says

I bet I will get my Mickey Mouse coins before my HOF. No one mentioned the mouse coins were a sellout in less than a month

  120. Pittsburgh P says

@VaBeachSteve no one mentioned it because it was a mintage of 10,000… The gold mickey’s did sell out in a day or so but it was only 1000…

  121. Matt says

New reader, and collector. My grading results just posted on NGC’s website for my BHOF order.

    1 – Clad 50C Proof – PF69 UC ER
    1 – Silver $1 Unc – MS70 ER
    4 – Silver $1 Proof – PF69 UC ER
    7 – Silver $1 Proof – PF70 UC ER

    How’d I do?

  122. ridgerunner says

Speaking if the BHOF coins, I ordered on the first day 3/27 after I got home from work . My delivery date has been pushed back so many times that I called the mint and they said they didn’t know when they would ship. The day I called the date had been pushed to May 17th, the next day after talking to them it was pushed to June 5th and June 12th so who knows when I will get them. I also ordered more later and they have a date of sometime in August, this for the silver coins, but the clad halves still have June ship date. I guess if I had of ordered 100 of each I would have them by now.
