2015 March of Dimes Special Set Announced

The United States Mint has just revealed preliminary details for a 2015 March of Dimes Special Set, which will be released as part of the commemorative coin program.

2015-march-of-dimes

The program was authorized under Public Law 112-209 to recognize and celebrate the 75th anniversary of the March of Dimes Foundation. Up to 500,000 silver dollars will be issued with an obverse design containing profile portraits of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dr. Jonas Salk and a reverse design depicting a baby cuddled in the hand of a parent.

The individual proof and uncirculated versions of the coin are currently scheduled for release on March 13, 2015.

With a release date to be determined, the 2015 March of Dimes Special Set will include the proof silver dollar along with two specially issued Roosevelt Dimes. The special coins will be a 90% silver proof Roosevelt Dime struck at the West Point Mint with the “W” mint mark and a 90% silver reverse proof Roosevelt Dime struck at the Philadelphia Mint with the “P” mint mark.

Both of the dimes included in the set would represent the first of their kind. Up until now, all modern 90% silver proof Roosevelt Dimes have been struck at the San Francisco Mint and carried the “S” mint mark. The reverse proof finish has never been used for the Roosevelt Dime series.

At a later date, the US Mint will provide additional information on the special product including the on-sale date, pricing, product limit, and household ordering limits.

Collectors will recall the last specially issued coin of the series as the 1996-W Roosevelt Dime. This coin was included within the 1996 Mint Set and issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the series.

@Cagcrisp- I think you bought both USM proof silvers and 3 coin set if I am correct. If you did, could you tell me if the capsules are the same for the 3 coin set silver proof and the single silver proof. My silver proof from my set has two slash marks all the way across the badge right dead center. Also the reverse has a cloudy haze already forming on it, sort of like old US Mint proof sets can get. It will only get worse with time. My clad also has a huge spot that looks like a bullseye right between the T and Y in Liberty. It looks like it was done by the laser etching. I don’t know if that could be considered an error, but it looks like it spells out TOY on the coin. Also there is a big slash across the outside of the capsule that is ugly.
To make a long story short, my proof gold is perfect and I want to keep it, so I am going to buy a silver and clad proof and replace them in my set and return the two defective coins. Even if the capsules are different I will just switch them out, but I don’t want to have to do that if I don’t have to.
    Thanks in advance!

RP this, RP that….mint mark this, mint mark that

  2. Dustyroads says

I wouldn’t be very interested in the commemorative program it it weren’t for the addition of the dimes. As it is the program has changed over the years, as well as become somewhat wasteful, at least that’s my understanding. Also, there’s a news story about a local chapter of the March of Dimes which had an audit recently which revealed a little over $60,000.00 in embezzled funds. Great for a tax break, just don’t expect much of your money to reach the need. As for the dimes, sounds like a winner!

  3. GoldFishin says

As a mercury dime collector, I am intrigued by the two special dimes, but I will most likely buy them already graded on Ebay. I will have to see pricing, mintage, etc first before I decide.

  4. Mk says

@Gf-just looked at a proof clad I received just about an hour ago. Absolutely hideous. Giant milk looking spot just above the horses neck and a dot of red on the female officer.. So much for quality control, hope no one lost a finger! Lol Also, one proof silver with scratches but my three coin sets turned out quite nice, thankfully.

  5. Dustyroads says

GoldFishin~ I like that plan too, I just worry that the prices will be too high for the graded coins. Quality should be good being that they are coming from West Point. I expect the numbers to be a little high, but not too high overall. I may consider buying multiples if the prices is not too steep.

  6. Clark says

I like the design, but l’m still wondering why our government would commemorate this eponymous program, named after a particular coin–the dime–with a different coin, a dollar.

The plan to mint two commemorative dimes is dandy, but geez, why dilute the marketing potential with another denomination? Why not issue an interesting set of dimes at once or, better yet, over a period of years to keep awareness (and funding) rolling for this worthy charity? It looks like a missed opportunity unless the program is becoming the “March of Dollars” IMHO.

  7. GoldFishin says

@MK- are the capsules the from the set the same as the single coins? Could you put them side by side and compare? Are the tops and bottoms the same? Thanks

  8. D Rittenhouse says

The special dimes sound very attractive but it’s a shame one much also buy the PoS MoD silver dollar in order to get them. So sad.

  9. thePhelps says

I must be the odd one out here… the MOD dollar isn’t that bad. Yes it could have been a lot better – but considering the recent run of coins…it isn’t bad.

I really don’t care about the dimes one way or the other. Other than the mercury dime – not many of them bring much of a thrill to me. Probably has a lot to do with the fact that anyway you dress it up – it is the same dime we have had in circulation since 1946…the same dime I have seen my entire life – so reverse not reverse – W mint…I really don’t care a lot about it.

  10. Dustyroads says

GoldFishin~ I’ve tried it so I’ll share it, the capsules for the commemorative gold 1/4 oz. coins are unique and not interchangeable with standard 1/4 oz. AGE capsules. Just in case it may cross your mind.

  11. Dustyroads says

thePhelps~ What about the $ value of a low mintage dime, that doesn’t spark your enthusiasm? Even if mintage reaches 200,000, that’s still pretty low…

  12. VA Bob says

According to the Charity Navigator, March of Dimes spends their contributions as follows (data 12/2012):

    http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=4045

IMO too much political hob knobbing is involved with this charity. While I understand the significance of the MoD 75th Anniversary, I can think of many other charities, without dark spots in there history that are at least or more deserving. I kind of wish the Mint would stop picking winners and losers for these commemorative programs. They should be to memorialize significant people, places, and things in our history without the monetary incentive handed out by legislation. Give where you feel it will do best.

  13. GoldFishin says

@Dusty-Both the clad and silver proofs of my 3 coin set are defective. My gold proof is perfect and I want to keep it. So, I have ordered a couple silver proofs and silver clads to replace my defective coins in the set. Then I will return the defective coins. I was just making sure the the capsules in the 3 coin set are not unique to the set, but are the same capsules if purchased separately. I know it is probably a dumb question, but the capsules in the set looked a little different than normal. I don’t have a single to compare against. I am sure they are probably the same.

@Mike in Pa- I don’t follow….if you want to make a set out of an empty OGP 3 coin set, you have to buy the coins from the Mint anyway. All you are really buying is the packaging and COA, unless you want to crack them out of 69 graded coins, then you would need the capsules, otherwise just buy the coins from the Mint and make your own set. Of course this is only if the 15,000 sets sell out.

  14. plmark says

@GoldFishin ~ The three coin capsules from the US Marshals set are identical to the capsules for both the proof and uncirculated coins purchased individually.

  15. VA Bob says

KCSO – No problem. I’m sure some people benefited from MoD over the years, so I’m in no position to say what is or isn’t important to some. I just find it sad when greed and charity combine. Wounded Warrior is (IMO) an awesome charity. Will there be a coin for it 75 years from now? I don’t believe any of us here will know the answer to that (but you never know).

  16. Erik H says

My guess is that they’ll mint 50k sets with a household limit of 5. If that’s the case I’ll get 5 sets & sell the dollars ASAP. Any loss will be recouped by selling the dimes later.

  17. says

VA Bob- What? You mean I won’t be rock’n it 75 years from now to find out, who sez? 😉
Nah, we don’t need a coin for it.., the most important factor is to be making positive impact today for those in need and sacrificed the most, which it is doing.

Back on topic, we’ve had some discussion lately on core base, market saturation, sales vs perceived demand.., & so on…, this 10c variant is interesting, though it’s still Modern. Would like to see mintage < 25k, though that's not going to happen. A run off between 10c variants and Sacabuck will be interesting (%'wise).

  18. GoldFishin says

@KCSO- $16.50 is nigh, I may go bird hunting soon and throw in a couple of sheep for my trouble. The bird series doesn’t perform all that well, but it is affordable quality bullion and I like the designs. I have studied the charts on silver and gold again tonight. It is critical that we hold higher lows on both. $1200-20 or so should be where algos and such come in to support gold, if that level doesn’t find support, well, how much lower we go is anybody’s guess. But if the weekly downtrending channel is any indication and we go to the lower end, $1075 would be my target. Keep Calm and Stack On….

WW a great charity, they do really special things…. also custom build homes for veterans with severe disabilities and missing limbs.

  19. MikeinPA says

GoldFishin- that’s what i was refering to the 15,00 limit could be bypassed by buying the box and coa, but apparently the inserts are not compatible

  20. Jerry Diekmann says

Clark – a dime back then (in 1938) would have about the same purchasing power of a dollar today, so “March of Dollars” may not be too far off the truth.

I realize that the date a coin is minted is not as important as the coin itself, but wouldn’t it be nice if the Mint could strike a commemorative coin in the year that the anniversary is being commemorated. This year it is the 77th anniversary of the MoD, and the 226th anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Marshals, in 1999 it was the 127th anniversary of Yellowstone national Park, in 1994 it was the 251st anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth, plus some other strange dates over the years. I know it’s not the Mint’s problem, this one (again) can be laid at the feet of those folks in Congress.

  21. Jerry Diekmann says

thePhelps – I will join you as an “oddball” who really likes this commem coin. But I have a special reason, as my wonderful wife Valerie has worked with moms and newborns for many years in the high-risk antepartum and postpartum units at Kaiser Hospital in Downey, CA. She has taken care of some new moms that she helped take care of when they were first born so many years earlier. She is retiring this July after 31+ years working at the hospital – I don’t know how many babies she has taken care of during that time but it must be in the thousands. I also like FDR and I am glad to see Dr. Jonas Salk portrayed on a coin – truly one of our greatest Americans, and his research and success in developing a vaccine against polio has to be one of the greatest accomplishments in history. When I was a little boy in the early 1950s, every parent had to worry every year during the summer and swimming and the “polio season”. Every class in my grade school had at least one child who had been afflicted with this terrible disease, usually a withered leg or arm. The worst sufferers were the children whose lungs had been attacked by the polio virus and who had to spend their lives in “iron lungs”, a fate I would not wish on anybody. So, I am glad to see this coin, and I plan on buying several proofs and uncirculated coins. As for the special set, the two new dimes are nice, but I don’t know why the Mint decided to include a silver dollar. Maybe it could be because the design on the obverse is the same as that on the silver half dollar that would have been issued in 1938 (and was minted from 1916 through 1947). But no silver dollars were issued in 1938, and no dollar coins at all were minted between 1936 and 1970.

  22. GoldFishin says

@MikeinPa- Dusty was referring to AGE(AmericanGoldEagle) capsules. PLMark said the capsules from the set and singles are identical and would work, so you could still build a set if you wanted to.

  23. Jerry Diekmann says

VABob – Yes, the Wounded Warrior project is a great program, but it shouldn’t have to be created in the VA had done its job in caring for these men and women – and their families. I mentioned it before, I have a son-in-law who came back with from Iraq and Afghanistan with PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury. I don’t have all the answers about what could be done, or what should be dione, for these soldiers, but I can tell you from my experience thast the VA seems to prefer that these serviicemen and women come back in body bags than with these kinds of injuries. To the VA it is cheaper for them to bury the soldier and pay his family some money than it is to take care of the soldier, maybe for the rest of his or her life. I realize that such a statement sounds terrible and cynical, but it happens all the time, and the VA (and Congress) are not willing to care for the men and women they sent into harm’s way to protect all of us. I never even got a return letter from General Shinseki or any of my California state senators when i wrote to them several years ago concerning my son-in-law’s condition. Not one word back from them, but the IRS wants more and more taxes from the middle claqss so it can send more and more people from the middle and poor classes to fight the wars that some of the rich have started. Soprry if this sounds political – I can assure you both polityical parties share responsibility for what has been happening in this country and in the VA

  24. merryxmasmrscrooge says

“With a release date to be determined, the 2015 March of Dimes Special Set will include the proof silver dollar along with two specially issued Roosevelt Dimes. ”

This means you better check every day, because these coins will be gone in a hairbreadth of a second.

  25. merryxmasmrscrooge says

Next will be the Rev Pf. lincoln cent west Point, to commemorate the 150th Ann. of the end of the Civil War.

  26. cagcrisp says

RP this, RP that….mint mark this, mint mark that, Enhance this, Enhance that, Low mintage this, Low mintage that

The mint keeps coming up New offerings that one hit wonders…

  27. Ends in Error says

What special set is being planned to mark the first anniversary of the current Shipper coming aboard? I could see a set of enhanced uncirculated everything – done up in Platinum. The cost would result in a rare set of coins. The cost would ensure no demand from the aftermarket – ever.

  28. Ralph says

Why are gold coins only offered on one commemorative each year? As far as I can remember it’s been like that.

  29. Hidalgo says

It appears that there will be 2 reverse proof Roosevelt dimes this year. One, bearing the S mint mark, which will be part of the planned 2015 reverse proof set, The other, bearing the P mint mark, which will be part of the March of Dimes set.

I am guessing that the reverse proof S Roosevelt dime will have a higher mintage than the P version. Of course, time will tell!!

More on the reverse proof S set can be found below:

    http://www.coinworld.com/news/us-mint-to-issue-reverse-proof-set-in-2015.html

  30. gary says

The U.S. Mint has a winner here in the March of Dimes dollar designs. The two busts of FDR and Dr. Jonas Salk are very well designed and sculpted, especially that of Dr. Salk. The depiction of the baby on the reverse is so elegantly simple and very pleasing. The two special issue Roosevelt dimes should be a great value added winner! Looking forward to this special set… just hope it won’t cost an arm and a leg!

  31. Hidalgo says

I’m projecting a sales price of $75 – $85 for the March of Dimes Special Set. There will be three silver coins in the set, which will keep its price in this range.

  32. says

    VaBob,
Thanks for the monetary breakdown in regard to this FOR PROFIT organization. Can we take it one step further and find out the generous salaries of the higher ups in this organization? Suffice it to say, a good part of contributions most likely go toward salary payroll. Check out the “administrative expenses”.

  33. jeff says

After you give to these over paid executives, maybe you can find in your heart to support your location sports franchise buy purchasing a license plate its only 30-40 extra a year. What a scam this issue is, and our government elects to participate I guess it’s top down .. MO MONEY

  34. says

According to careerbliss.com, the executive director of the MOD makes $103,000 a year. Other websites report the average salary of the MOD employees as $54,000.

  35. says

GF – ironic (and funny) that you’re contemplating a late-season bird hunt, I had that urge too the other day and knocked down a gaggle just a bead above 20 gauge range. Beautiful birds, and should feed well time to come. I’m penciled in for a date to the National Zoo to see baby Bao Bao, I wonder if it’s a deal breaker if I go hunting along the way?
I sure hope we find a solid support level from here on out, thinking I jumped the gun getting back into slv which appears may be a very long position if the recent articles I’ve read about stabilization in the eurozone and their QE program resulting in possible downward pressure on the yellow pixy dust.., shhhh.., I wish I had some magic pixy dust, we’d all be retired! Good Luck!

silver coins, circus coins, Cinderella coins, & pixy dust

  36. says

For 2008, the CEO of the MOD, Jennnifer Howse, “earned” over $600,000. Her assistant, Ms. Massey, earned over $400,000. Aren’t these salaries ridiculously high for a supposedly not-for- profit organization?
I would also venture to say that these execs have enjoyed many luxurious field trips to nice locales for “fund raising purposes”.

  37. A Bob says

This coin design is growing on me. I will be interested to see how well the uncirculated dollar sells. The proof will sell well due to this set.
They may need a special uncirculated set to push them late in the year.
Maybe a clad uncirculated PDSW dime and dollar coin set fot Christmas.

  38. says

Call me cynical, but I believe that the inclusion of the two “special” dimes in the MOD set is the Mint’s attempt to make this otherwise ho hum, “anniversary” commemorative more appealing. The bottom line is sales.

  39. VA Bob says

Jerry D – I can appreciate your perspective on the cause this coin represents. My beef is with how these some of these charities are managed (or mismanaged) and interwoven with political interests, often with friends/family on the board of directors. And you are correct that both parties share the blame. When the salaries out weight the benefit, or consumes the greater part of the contributions, the organization provides, I take issue with. I had the same issue with the BHoF coin. Pro sports get the taxpayer to pay for the stadiums, they charge so much that the average Joe can’t afford to take their kids to a game, pay their players (some of questionable character) millions, charge extreme licensing fees on their products, then want the coin collecting world to subsidize a building highlighting their careers and achievements. Now no one is forcing anyone to buy the coins, but like most things it falls to others to support the aims of those that could easily pay their own way.

  40. VA Bob says

I should also say I don’t believe the MoH coin is a terrible design, but not the most fantastic either. I typically pick up a proof and UNC example for my collection. The silver dimes add a bit more interest, but not nearly as much as if they would have struck Mercury (Winged Liberty) dimes for the occasion. Had that happened I strongly believe there would have been a first day sellout.

  41. VA Bob says

Hawkster – I agree. The Mint is sweeting the pot with the dimes. The MoH just doesn’t scream “must have at all costs” about it. Good marketing on their part. As for the hobby, it will ensure there are enough silver MoH dollars available that it will not see any significant appreciation, barring silver increases, for decades.

  42. fmtransmitter says

There is never any different size capsules used for the exact coin from the US Mint or any other Mint hat I.know of or have heard of..

  43. Dustyroads says

Marketing in deed! This MoD has been a big yawner since day one. I’ll reverberate an old thought, the Mint is pulling it’s boots on. With regards to Hidalgo’s comment of the set selling for around $75., I will predict the set selling for about $10. less from the Mint at around $65.

  44. 69- z28 says

The us mint isn’t in business for giving deal’s, this special set will be $85.00 To 90.00 !!!

  45. Dustyroads says

69- z28~That may be what the average tach costs, but the Mint will have troubles moving it at that price.

  46. says

My Special Set cost estimate from last week accounted for a clad 10c-S, not silver, & the est was ~$70. So let’s take a stab at building up the cost estimate and you all can comment on what you think is valid if you care to, I’d be interested to see thoughts on it:

    $1 PRF MoD: $46.95 to $51.95
Special Set packaging: $7 to $12 (gauged from JFK/Sacabuck/BHoF set offerings)
.10C – P silver Reverse Proof: $4 (not unique to set)
    .10C – W silver proof: $10 (unique to set)
A special set premium? $10 (this is profit for unique that the mint could charge because you’re going to buy it regardless)

So if those estimate appear plausible, on the low end you’re knocking on $70 w/o the premium, on the high end, squarely in the mid-$80 range.

  47. cagcrisp says

    @Hawkster, Cynical…

I Agree. The Mint is taking something with little demand and repackaging it with 2 Silver dimes, adding $15 to price and selling. I don’t like the design of the MOD, not interested in the Silver dimes…

My guess on Price is $60-$65…

  48. Dustyroads says

Keep Calm & Stack On~All good analysis, but… the $85. price tag is difficult to digest and the set will be here all year.

  49. says

Any thoughts on Product Limit (mintage of .10c-W)?

Due to the rapid sell out of Sacabuck (which the mint probably feels they left A LOT of $ on the table), thinking here that it’ll be North of 50,000.., sooooo

a 75,000 mintage to celebrate the 75th Anniversary?

  50. Bill says

The reverse of the March of dimes coin reminds me of a photo that was taken of Celine Dion holding her baby.
I belief it appeared on Time magazine

  51. says

    VaBob,
All of your comments relating to the MOD organization have been very well stated. I hope that buyers of the set realize that a sizeable percentage of the surcharge will go toward paying the high employee salaries of this company, as they did with the Baseball HOF surcharges.
Charity wise, one of the top organizations is St. Jude’s.

  52. Larry says

I like reverse proof coins. I still think the Kennedy is a stunning coin. So I’m all for a reverse proof anything. The only thing is the dime is so small, it may not be that great. But you never know. Now if I could just get that 2006 RP Gold Eagle…

  53. says

Proof Roosevelt 90% silver dimes are not a big deal, as they have been included in the silver proof sets for a long time, formerly minted at Philly and now minted at S.F. So, it is not as if they are a new concept, specially created for the MOD set.
I know, some of you will contend that having the “W” mint mark is all important.

  54. Tinto says

I’m in for the RP dime …unless they come out with an RP 2015 proof set then I’ll just go for that set. I guess we should know later in the year whether the Mint will issue RP proof sets in 2015 or not.

  55. RSF says

I guess we’ll have to get another display page ready for the Roosevelt dime varieties this year. Eight holes will be needed so far. And depending on where they end up minting an RP proof set, possibly a ninth.

  56. thePhelps says

KCSO..I am with cagcrisp on this. If the set goes for much over $60 it will be pushing the bounds. We just had a 4 coin silver half dollar set sale at $99 and many thought that was high. Back your cost down $10 because the surcharge is included in the price of the of the dollar coin already. Plus we are already paying a premium for packaging etc… on the dollar.

If they try to push 2 dimes for more than $10 each they are really guessing there are some gullible people buying. My guess is $60 to $65 as well.

  57. John c says

Wow, a little off topic here, but the coin and currency set that I oredered on dec 11 is due to arrive on Monday. I thought there was absolutely no chance of seeing those.

  58. John c says

Keep calm, The mint is trying to make money. I would guess a limit of either one or two hundred thousand on the dime set. It does not cost the mint that much to make the dimes so I would not expect the dimes to cost more than five Bucks give or take extra. To me the set is a little bonus to collectors, but more importantly a way for the mint to sell more of the profitable dollars.

  59. Hidalgo says

It is difficult to project how much the March of Dimes Special Set will cost per unit. The set will include a proof March of Dimes commemorative, which likely would sell for $35 – $45 alone, the two silver proof dimes, which may sell for $10 – $15 each, and a likely surcharge fee to support the charity.

I believe I have to revise my estimate to $65 – ??? for the complete set. The high end would depend on the amount of the surcharge.

  60. VA Bob says

Dang Dusty I sure as heck did write MoH vice MoD! Good catch, and thanks for bringing to my attention. If people only knew the acronym hell I live in it would all be crystal clear. lol 😉

  61. thePhelps says

VA Bob… the company I work for crossed 1 million acronym’s in 1985… trust me – I know how tough it can be.

  62. VA Bob says

John C – I got the four American C & C sets I ordered on Thurday and Friday (2 each, shipped same day from two 12/04 orders). The coins do look nice. the brass color takes the enhancement well. Other than nothing special about the coins (edge lettering) or the accompanying dollar bills (serial numbers). I almost passed these up as more Mint dreck, but since I get a P & P roll of the SAC’s each year I figured why not. 50k probably isn’t going to shake the earth on a non-circulating coin, but it is nice. They should have did the same treatment on the presidential C & C’s, starting with TR $1 IMO.

thePhelps – Good to know I’m not alone. My acronym nightmare started @ age 17 in the Navy and continues today with Northrop Grumman.

  64. VA Bob says

GoldFishin – They could have included the proof and UNC MoD in the set and really hammered it out. Come for the dimes, stay for the dollars.

  65. Larry says

Usually I pass on the Silver Proof Set and just get the Proof Silver Quarters set, but this year I think I will get the Silver Proof Set in order to get the Presidential dollars. I grew up with three of these presidents, so finally I can relate a little to the coins. Hey, wouldn’t an enhanced unc Kennedy dollar be nice?

  66. says

thePhelps – yeah, it’s that 4 coin silver half dollar set at $99 that still has me scratching my head. I get that there’s 4 different (2 unique) finishes associated with the 4 coin half dollar set and with that, increased production/handling cost, etc., though I became more of the opinion that it was priced higher than it really should have been after receiving my set. Whether VA Bob or Pitt won the pricing argument I can’t recall, though both were correct in my opinion in that it was priced on the high end. WRT the MoD set, I bet we’ll know when we see the packaging, if it’s done up like the JFK clad set, then I wouldn’t anticipate it’ll add much cost.

Personally, I like the MoD design and think it’s very appropriate for the cause; in the same breath I think they goofed in not selecting a design fashioned after the Winged Liberty, and thus sales will suffer and be mediocre at best. The two unique dimes won’t entice me enough to buy the set at $60, I just really don’t have to have them along with the Comm. Besides I just blew that money picking up the proof Feast which I absolutely love.
    Blow your $ on what’cha like! 🙂

  67. thePhelps says

Proof Feast… I’ve debated on buying those in proof… but just can’t see the extra money they want for them. I’ll have to go look again and see if they are all that. 🙂

I think it would have been a tough sale to say Roosevelt was a large part of the MOD… lets not include a design that includes him – lets do a Mercury dime design… sure they might have sold more – but ignored history to do it.

I am actually fine with this design and the special set really isn’t going to do much for me. I’ll watch the less shiny coin and see what the sales do for it.

  68. Dave SW FL says

Any guesses what the MoD set dimes will sell for in 70? 69?
I think I will pass on the set and just try to get a 70 of each dime. Don’t think the dollar will be all that special. I don’t need to pay for packaging and surcharge for sets.

  69. Clark says

@VaBob & John C–Add me to the list of recipients who unexpectedly received several sets of ’14 $1 Saca Coin & Currency. I had given up hope that my 12/11/14 order had any chance of being fulfilled. Thanks, Mint!

Although I have no interest in the MOD silver dollar, I need the dimes for my Roosevelt dime collection to keep it complete. It would have been great if they would have designed a set of dimes similar to the nice work done with Lincoln cents back in 2009. Maybe they’re saving that approach for the bicentennial of FDR’s birth in 2082; I’ll start saving for it now.

  70. Dustyroads says

I think the set will be a winner. I’m wondering more though about how popular the uncirculated silver dollar will be given it’s stand alone status. I’m still looking for a silver dollar to under sell the `96 unc. Paralympics silver dollar, it’s possible.

  71. Ends in Error says

    Dustyroads

Yes it’s still possible but just not with this one. There’s still a crowd hanging around from the MLB HOF event and theres just too much product being bought these days. Maybe during some sort of economic collapse, we’ll see a short issue of something.

  72. says

Dusty – I, as well. perhaps 2016 has started to garner the full attention (& budget planning) for some. If there is a cost estimate to be done, maybe this is where the attention needs to be, plus add padding for an unexpected short issue that you otherwise wouldn’t grab in a current year offering though may want to jump on if the opportunity presents itself, you know what I’m driving at. There’s a Texas size storm brewing on the horizon, best to show up prepared! 😉

  78. Ends in Error says

I think it would be an added service if PCGS would specify the day of the week that a coin was graded. Perhaps a Sunday coin would turn out to be really scarce. As an added bonus they could grade a few coins on special holidays, like Thanksgiving, New Years Eve, and maybe Election Day.

The Presidential Dollar Set with Election Day Labels could one day be a hot registry goal.

thePhelps – I wouldn’t sink any money into the proofs unless you just like the theme. Like most of the offerings we discuss here, they’re not good investments like some want to think, and hence why we say, “buy what you like.” I wouldn’t say this on a week night here on MNB for the wrath that would be bestowed upon me, but from my view, the series parallels the BHoF. A hit theme, a big following, a one time deal, and then that’s it. That’s a key ingredient that sustains interest. The Z thing start a couple of decades ago and is big with the Gen X’ers.., it has gained even more momentum with the Gen Y’s, will it continue with the Millenniums, probably not because frankly they come across as a bunch of pansy asses. But for rounds, they have quite the following and in my opinion, will perform better with my Generation than the majority of what excites us here sometimes (That is key). Now WRT the proofs, I’m surprised how much they do not look like the photos shown on the site. I just received my first Anne and she is bad ass, looks different than the photo and I’m getting another. Walker is cool too. Glad to see that they dropped the mintage on Feast, I expect some surprises when it shows. Seeing how screwed up the world is today, I figure a set of the proofs and bullion, and bullion and the real deal classic equivalents will be worth some good laughs in time to come. Can’t wait to see #8!

  84. GoldFishin says

Earlier today I was going through a few auctions on fleabay and saw that one seller would not accept purchases from customers that reside in Minnesota because of a recently passed state law. I hadn’t heard about this and starting checking on it. Here is a rather concise summary from a bullion dealer about the law. I checked multiple sources to verify the legislation. It began in July 2014. Maybe is was discussed here and I missed it.

You just gave me an idea with the Christmas Day mention. Bethlehem PA just flashed into mind. Do you remember Charles Kuralt with his ” On the Road ” bit? Well how about PCGS or NGC ” On the Road”. We could have PCGS ” On the Road” Christmas Day in Bethlehem PA .

How hot would Christmas Day Silver and Gold Eagles from Bethlehem be?

  86. GoldFishin says

The original article I tried to post was concise, but MNB’s software wouldn’t allow me to post it because it originated from a bullion dealer. The short version basically says if you are deemed by the law to be a bullion dealer that does business with MN residents and have sales that exceed $5000 you will be required to register and purchase a surety bond in order to be allowed to conduct business. The language of the law is a little murky and open to different interpretations, so many dealers are choosing not to conduct business with MN residents.

Hawkster – the grading companies – are also authentication companies. That is basically what you are thinking would happen. In this case – that would be a $12,000 mistake – and you can imagine there are people trying to devise how to polish the edge of the Sac’s right now to get even half that if they can slide it buy an authentication company. A rare coin – such as the 1 in 50,000 Sac coin with no edge writing – probably took a bit more than 15 seconds of grading.

“Talked with ebay about their policy on positive feedback”

The one thing I have learned about e-bay, “there is nothing they can do about it;” this seems to be the standard response to most issues outside the basics.

Mark — when I do buy, I always read between the lines on feedback and I also consider the sellers response/view/position — as I know buyers can sometimes be impatient and some critical above the norm.

The feedback that influences me is when I see a clear pattern from a seller over time and he/she has made no effort to correct their practices. At that point I get concerned that the seller either does not care or is just oblivious.

  127. Bernie in FL says

    @mark

Good for you to keep him on your Buyer’s list. I too have had experiences where USPS has not delivered the item 2-3 Days as a Priority Package and the Buyer gets extremely upset that I dropped the ball. Then they send you an email that if it is not here in the next day there will be hell to pay.

Then the item arrives one day later than the 3 days for Priority Mail and they expect to be compensated from me for the USPS’s delivery problem. (note: they did not care the Weather maybe extreme). You compensate the individual and still they leave Negative Feedback.

Ebay will do NOTHING and trust me, I too have him on my Buy List! But as usual, these people never sell anything and just drop emails to get you to compensate them. Then they have another ebay profile that they Sell under so you cannot do it to them. They play the ebay game well and are Predators!!!

Since it includes both Gold and Silver that seem to be revised Up, will the 3 coin set be revised Upwards also?

  135. cagcrisp says

Since the Mint Re-listed the Marshals last week, the expected date for the offerings have not changed:

    Silvers 02/10
    Clad Proof 05/05
    Clad Unc 02/10
    3 coin 02/02

Since it is 02/10 I wonder if the Mint will change the date for the Silvers and Clad Unc Or just let it go just like they have the 3 coin set?

It’s a pretty big risk buying those 2014 First Spouse Medal Sets at this point. Now that the Mint has opened up sales again, it will destroy the secondary market value. It’s hard not to feel sorry for those who were paying over $200 for a set of these now!

I can’t find them on the Mint website right now…

Maybe you were looking at the single’s, I do not see the 4 coin sets even listed but I still am trying to find things on this great new website…I should be able to see the 2013 4 coin FS sets in bronze but I don’t…I have the “show out of stock” button checked as well..

    fm,

To find the bronze medal sets, you have to click on “First Spouse” under the “Medals” tab. That seems to be the only page they show up on. The 2014 set is still available under “back order” status at the time of this writing. Look towards the bottom of the page.

This does not bode well for the value of this product, though. The Mint at one time had the message on that product page that it was sold out and no longer available. Now that they’ve gone back on that, no one will be able to take their word on something being sold out again.

    @ FM

You need to go to the medals tab then FS. Not coin programs. I saw the news that they were on sale again. I still do not understand why prices jumped in the first place. There was not much interest on them.

Just ordered 50 of them…in stock date March 13th…if they stay for sale longer than a day…I will just call and cancell the order.

Thanks Rudy, I put in an order for one. I don’t want it for flipping, just to add to my collection. I hope I actually get it – don’t want to pay those crazy bay prices.

Exactly right! And remember, this is NOT THE US MINT doing this, this PFS WEB doing this crazy stuff. The Mint just wants to go to work and stamp out coins and designs…

PFS Web please get your @#$% together! Anyone know about this Company>? Is it ran by a Grad Student? lol

After having some time to contemplate this MOD $1 Coin , I’ve come to the conclusion that this will be one of the most low interest Coins of all times.

Put it right there with the Eunice Shriver.

I doubt Mike on HSN is bidding on coins..or even buying coins. I could be wrong on the first sentence. But he does not buy the coins for the show nor does he plan the merchandising. HSN has thousands of product managers and merchandisers along with producers who plan the product. He is just there to talk about it. He is good at making it sound personal. All of the HSN coins drop ship from First Commemorative Mint in NY. The few times I have ordered a medal or something unique from HSN as a token I have been sorely dissapointed. I will pay a premium for a good presentation but the product from FCMINT is always so cheesy, Those boxes they show are about as cheap as they come.

And…not real fond of the March of Dimes design. Why can’t the US Mint break barriers and give us stunning symbols of America. Wildlife..high relief…different versions of the silver Eagle…like a 5 ounce high relief. Rather we get modern commems with a hodge podge of generic designs squeezed onto one surface.
