2016 American $1 Coin and Currency Set and Platinum Eagle Details and Images

16ra_cBOTH

The U.S. Mint has shared information on the 2016 American $1 Coin and Currency Set, due for release on Thursday, June 16. As with last year’s issue, the new set will be available for $14.95 and include both an Enhanced Uncirculated Native American dollar (“S”) and a $1 United States bank note. This year’s bank note will be dated 2013 and derive from one of the country’s 12 Federal Reserve Bank locations.

The mintage limit for this year’s Coin and Currency set has been set at 75,000 units. This is 15,000 less than the 90,000-set allocation awarded to last year’s issue, which was increased in response to the unexpected popularity of the 2014 set. The 2015 issue has yet to be declared “sold out” however, and this year’s limit seems like a better approximation of collector interest in the issue. Orders will be limited to five per household.

The obverse of the Native American dollar was designed by Glenda Goodacre and is common to coins in this series; it first appeared on the Sacagawea dollar in 2000. It features a rendering of Sacagawea with a sleeping child, with the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST located in the field.

The 2016 reverse includes soldiers’ helmets from World Wars I & II placed over feathers positioned to form a “V” for victory. Inscribed in the field is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, $1, WWI, WWII, and CODE TALKERS. This side of the coin was designed by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr. The date, mint mark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM are included along the edge of the coin.

The coin and bank note are exclusive to this set and come housed in a folder bearing historical information on Code Talkers and a certificate of authenticity. Recent figures put the 2014 set at 50,000 units sold, while the 2015 set is listed at 88,363 on the most recent U.S. Mint sales report.

The Mint has also posted images of the 2016 American Eagle One Ounce Platinum Proof Coin, due for release on June 30.

The new Platinum Eagle will have a mintage limited to 10,000 coins and an order limit of one unit per household. The product page for the item notes that the reverse design features an image of Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing enlightenment and peace, respectively. The olive branch holds 13 olives, one for each of the original colonies of the United States. The design was created by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by Joseph Menna. Liking the American Platinum Eagle reverse design, I’m wondering if there will be an enhancement to some of the surfaces for the strike? For example, maybe the dress would have a different texture than the Lady Liberty skin. The Statue of Liberty on the obverse side had been receiving the enhanced appearance for a couple years.

  2. Erik H says

Will people try to collect 12 C & C sets, on from each Federal Reserve bank?

The best note to have would be from the San Francisco Fed since the mint mark on the $1 coin is also from S.F.

  3. says

    Hmmmm…, 12 x $14.95 = $179.40.., plus all the extra’s required to capture one each of the 12…,

Ha! Not this cat! For I am not needy!
    😉

Yes & KLM – Thanks, though I won’t be throwing any more good money after bad money, 2014 provided for some expensive mistakes which inadvertently financed my trial and error Master’s degree in coin collecting.

Chris – I hear ya; were those BHoFs or can share which coins and the extent of the tarnishing?

  4. Brad says

I wonder just HOW low of a serial number they’re talking about here? The note they picture is #4000 from Dallas (FRB #11). Is that the starting point for the numbers on these notes, or will they start at #1? If it turns out they use notes #1-6,250 for each FRB, then that might be worth gambling on. Those single and double-digit notes would be nice to have. But the chances of actually getting any of them would be so slim. I’d probably end up with numbers above 5,000 on all my sets! Who knows though. I guess we’ll find out if they start at #1 for each FRB when the orders start being fulfilled.

Think how nice it would be to be able to track down the SAME serial number from each FRB and have a complete set of 12 of that sort. A virtually impossible task, but it would be one heck of an impressive accomplishment!

  5. Brad says

Do you think they’ll be a little more careful this year and make sure none of these notes are sealed in the packaging off-centered? I had one last year that had the note shifted an inch and a half to the right side! Talk about unsightly!

  6. Jeff Hall says

First day sell out, lickedy split. Funny thing these are not platinum, palladium, gold or silver just clad . Eat em up . 75K gone before you know it.

  7. says

Anyone contemplating the fmtransmitter fraud with this C&C set? To refresh memories, this fraud consists of replacing the original special finish coins and special number FRB notes with ordinary versions and then returning them to the Mint for refunds.

  8. Give Me Da Money Plz says

I really do not care which federal reserve note ends up in my set. As long as there are no defects, I will be happy. I am buying this set for the coin, not for the fiat toilet paper note.

But then some will say the same thing about the coin since it is clad. I understand what you are saying, but in seventy years, I am sure it will have some premium in o.g.p. because of the sets that were graded or that were lost over the years. When the dollar collapses, like all fiat currencies have before it, I will have enough gold and silver to stay afloat. I am sure there will be people somewhere that will be interested in buying one of these sets for the same reasons they are buying those Zimbabwe dollars.

  9. Jeff says

I don’t follow those that think gold and silver with somehow save your fiat problem. If some wants what you have they will get it, I know over your guns and dead body that’s my point. POW

  10. Boz says

Last year fmtransmitter replaced the native coins with morgans and he stuck silver certificates in place of the valuable janet yellin note. I was lucky enough to get several hundred if his returned items sold to me late in the year. It is fortunate that the fullfillmint center does not look at the rejects prior to flipping them back out again.

  11. Larry says

For many coins, the intrinsic value is a very small part of the coins value. There are many old nickels and pennies that have no more intrinsic value than modern clads, but cost mucho bucks. The enhanced unc sacs are relatively rare coins. I think a set if them will do pretty well.

  12. Bill777 says

Guess it doesn’t make any difference that the 2016-S NA dollar will have a total mintage of probably well over a million (including proofs in various sets), and the 2014-P NA dollar even higher (NIFC uncirculated coins), whereas the 2015-W had only 90,000 total mintage in all finishes? Presumably hardly anyone is collecting contemporary coins by date and mint-mark any more, just by kind of finish?

  13. Give Me Da Money Plz says

    @ Bill777

You are comparing apples and oranges. Analyzing based solely on the design and mint mark without taking into consideration the finish of the coin is leaving out important data.

For example, I would not group silver coins and clad coins together just because they have the same design and mint mark. So what is the reason for me grouping together enhanced uncirculated coins and proof coins/uncirculated coins? It does not make any sense to me.

    Question to the Blog –

Any one ever pop any of this Modern stuff out of its capsule and throw it in your pocket?
If anything just to take an opportunity to enjoy it or make it ‘circulated’…

I’m carrying around at at times a ’14 Silver PRF BHoF, a Copper Zombuck Dying Eagle, and ’09 Unc Abe Lincoln and it’s been interesting to watch transformation as they become toned and show ‘circulation’ wear.

Especially the copper Zombuck, it’s taking on a lot of character and color patterns. Really rather neat, must be the geek in me! 🙂

What’s up with the 2012 SILVER PROOF SET , on E-Bay prices have been over $220 and have watch many sell at this price range . Just wondering if it will hold it’s value , I remember 1999 silver proof set was well over $350 for awhile and now below $100 for the set.

KCSO… In 1971 I put a newly minted Eisenhower dollar in my pocket and carried it around mixed in with my pocket change for the next ten years or so. It was pretty evenly well worn at the time I spent it. Wish I still had it to send in to PCGS for grading! LOL

  17. a Bob says

The notes could all come from the same Federal Reserve Bank. I’m going to need more information before I order. Notes included don’t sound special.

I do have the BBHOF in all flavors only in OGP. I am trying
to put together a full set of the ASE. I can’t yet afford the
king 1995-W but have most of the others, including the
bullion versions, which surprisingly are available in quite
    good quality in bare condition.

Goat, I was buying a collection from a guy with two 2012 silver and one clad 2012 proof sets and did not know they were priced so high. I bought just about everything else he had to offer except those three proof sets. Even the price books support the ebay pricing.

The Coin Vault was stating a few years ago that 2012 proof sets are the lowest mintage proof sets since the late 1950’s. The half dollar and dime are the key coins according to them especially the silver versions.

I can understand carrying around uncirculated coins in one’s pocket, but intentionally scuffing up pretty proof finish coins just for fun is against my religion.

I popped out one of the clad uncirculated BHOF coins and carry it around with me in my pocket. I’ve shown it to a number of people who look at it curiously. Most people are totally unaware of any of these special coins made by the mint, especially by the millennials who have often never even seen a real half dollar. Most think the coin is pretty neat.

  27. data dave says

I also think it is very fun to carry around unusual coins in my pocket to show people. I try to keep the value on the low side since I have lost them before! But a lot of people have never seen a Morgan dollar or silver round.

  28. cagcrisp says

@fmtransmitter, Did you ever find a suitable 1904 $20 Liberty?

I haven’t searched lately because Gold prices have increased so much that unless you changed your price range that you couldn’t ever afford it in any grade…

Gary – neat story, thanks for sharing, beat that coin had a lot of character; Good choice, ’71 was a very, very good year

Chris – good luck on with the collection hunt, I see now why’d you swear off PCGS if those golds came back poorly graded.

Gator – ha, I figured I wasn’t the only one walking around with a domed coin on my pocket. The edges on mine are sharp, very sharp, it doubles as a pocket knife.

  32. joe#2 says

I don’t know which looks worse, The front or reverse. She looks like a zombie with the kids on the reverse of the coin. Maybe they’ll look better in person. Lord, I hope so. Was looking forward to these.

Like cagcrisp, I also practice abstinence when it comes to carrying pocket change. I never leave home with circulating coins and always pay with paper only. I find it irksome when someone in line is fishing around for exact change so they don’t have to break a small note. After receiving coins, I either transfer from pocket to car, or if close by I just dump it in a jar soon after arriving home.

Just like we did with the USM UNC last year.

I am grossly surprised that the mint struck more that 17,500 of Shawnee and now has maintained it on a BO status.

IMO they either had a shipment ready to transport to Memphis or is keeping it in a BO to clear out remaining orders and returns until going CU, which makes sense to clear out inventory.

If they struck more.., well that’s a head scratcher…, though historically, this is the time of the year that the Puck interest begins to wane…
