Update #1, 6/30/16, 12:56 p.m.: The 2016 American Eagle One-Ounce Platinum Proof Coin has gone into “Currently Unavailable” status on the U.S. Mint’s Web site 56 minutes after its release.

Update #2, 7/1/16, 9:55 a.m.: Michael White of the Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications has shared the following statement regarding sales of the 2016 Platinum Proof Eagle: “At 12:56 p.m. EDT, June 30, the 2016 American Eagle One Ounce Platinum Proof Coin (16EJ) went into a ‘Currently Unavailable’ status after the Mint received orders totaling the entire mintage of 10,000. If the product is made available later to the public as the result of returns and cancellations, the most efficient way for interested customers to receive notification is through the use of the “Remind Me” feature on our Web site appearing on the product page.”

Tomorrow, June 30, the U.S. Mint will release the 2016 American Eagle One-Ounce Platinum Proof Coin at noon ET. It has a mintage limited to 10,000 pieces with an order restriction of one per household, and it will debut at $1,350.00.

The designs for the 2015 and 2016 Platinum Eagle Proof reverses have been given the theme of “Torches of Freedom,” with each coin featuring a depiction of Liberty carrying a torch. The items’ presentation cases allow both issues to be displayed together as a two-part series.

The reverse of the 2016 Platinum Eagle features an image of Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing enlightenment and peace, respectively. The olive branch holds 13 olives, one for each of the original colonies of the United States. Inscribed in the field and along the rim are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, .9995 PLATINUM, 1 OZ., $100, and the West Point Mint’s “W” mint mark. The design was created by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by Joseph Menna.

The coin’s obverse features John Mercanti’s rendering of Liberty, first introduced on Platinum Eagles in 1997. Inscribed in the field and along the rim is LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2016.

Last year’s Platinum Proof coin sold the entirety of its 3,881-piece mintage within 10 minutes of its release. A complete list of final mintages for every American Eagle One-Ounce Platinum Proof Coin can be found here.

In other news, the chosen designs for the 2017 Lions Club Commemorative silver dollars were unveiled yesterday, June 28, at Lions Club International’s annual convention, taking place this year in Fukuoka, Japan. The commemoratives will mark the 100th anniversary of the organization’s founding next year.

2017-Lions-Club-Commem-ObverseBOTH

The obverse of the coin was designed by Joel Iskowitz and engraved by Joseph Menna. It features a portrait of Lions Club founder Melvin Jones beside the group’s logo. Inscribed in the field is MELVIN JONES, FOUNDER, while LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2017 appear along the rim.

The reverse, designed by Patricia Lucas-Morris and sculpted by Don Everhart, includes images of three lions: a male, a female, and a cub. A stylized globe serves as the background, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SERVICE, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the coin’s denomination, $1, are placed along the coin’s rim.

Finally, the value of an ounce of gold has gained more than $56 in the last week, in part as a result of the United Kingdom’s vote to exit the European Union. Today, in keeping with its pricing chart for gold and platinum collector coins, the U.S. Mint has increased prices on several of its products.

Gold’s current value is $1,321.50 per ounce, according to the London Bullion Market Association; this is well above the maximum for the previous pricing bracket, which was to be applied as long as gold stayed between $1,250.00 and $1,299.99. The updated prices for numismatic gold coins will remain in place until the value of gold is no longer consistently appraised at $1,300.00 to $1,349.99 an ounce.

The chart below includes prices for categories of gold collector coins on offer at the U.S. Mint. The first column lists each coin, while the second and third columns display the previous costs of the items beside the new, adjusted prices. The pricing chart for all three of this year’s Centennial Gold Coins can be found here.

  1. gary says

with 10,000 mintage most likely these will be around on the mint website for some time.
    I’m passing on this puppy!

  2. Dave SW FL says

Maybe they’ll release the remaining dimes for Christmas. Getting ridiculous.

Any month now we will be given release dates for the quarter & half. Heck, just release all of them on the same day and bankrupt the Big Boyz 🤔

  3. earthling says

I got to agree with “most likely these will be around on the mint website for some time.” The 2015 APE sold out in 10 minutes? Well given the bullion mania in Gold and Silver, look for Proof Platinum Bullion mania to kick in also.

So it takes 1 hour for an APE Sellout? Yeah, compared to 10 minutes, that will be a long time.

    😉

  4. earthling says

Friday I want my Nancy’s – hopefully 1 each Proof and BU?

I will gladly pass on the 2016 APE ( Hillary Coin) to get my Gold Nancy’s .

  5. MikeinPA says

earthling-I will gladly pass on the Nancy coins, never be worth than spot anyhow, saving for the quarter and half

  6. joe#2 says

Jackie looks like Jackie… Nancy does not look like Nancy. Yes, Looks better than the “photo” pics, But not up to snuff.

  7. Buzz Killington says

I was going to quit buying ALL new issues at the end of 2016. But if those lions on the back of a silver dollar come out nice, it’s going to be hard to resist.

  8. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

I’m going for it… Gonna spring for the 2016 APE. There are a lot of factors at play which might combine to make this a bigger seller than what many think. And if not a big seller out of the gate, perhaps it may be a sleeper. But I’ve been wrong before so we’ll see.

  9. MikeinPA says

YES but, I’m on the line myself, like the design, but also want the quarter and half, would be an easier decision with a release timeline

  10. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

MikeinPA: I agree that it would be so helpful if we had a timeline on the other releases. The Mint doesn’t do us any favors and it is probably by design. If they dribble the products out without giving a timeline than perhaps they think people will just buy what is available now. How much you want to bet that they make an announcement about the Tribute Half next week after the holiday? Or maybe an announcement on the remaining gold merc dimes, but that seems increasingly unlikely.

  11. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

Sorry – meant to say that the announcement will be about the SLQ, not the half. We’ll be lucky to hear anything about the Half anytime before December at this pace!

  12. earthling says

I have to agree with everyone about the Nancy Reagan Coin. Most likely it’ll never be worth even its full weight in Gold. But I just have fond memories of the Reagan era. I mean Ronnie called out ” Mr Gorbachev, bring down this wall”. And lo and behold, the Berlin Wall DID come down – eventually.

I was in East Berlin around 1983 ish , never could imagine the Wall ever coming down for any reason. But Ron actually did bankrupt the USSR and the empire crumbled.

The 2016 APE? It’s a nice enough Coin but personally I see Platinum on a slippery slope. When Plat drops a few more hundred, maybe I’ll catch one then.

Good luck with the APE. If it breaks free of it’s chains , I’ll be watching with amusement. The bullion fiends might just cause a super fast sellout. I could see it going in 25 – 75 minutes easy.

  13. Zaz says

Can go two ways about the ’16 APE, sellout within two weeks’ time or languish in inventory until it’s mercifully axed in early 2017. I agree with Steve, the sweet spot for this year’s APE is probably in the vicinity of 7,500 coins. It has had more hype thanks to the instant sellout of the ’15 than the either the ’13 & ’14 APE coins and about $300-$400 less than those two, . Probably upwards of 75% of the ’15 APE were sold to flippers and most of them aren’t coming back tomorrow as the mintage is perceived as too high. There’ll be a few stragglers from that group who hope that lightning will strike twice, but that almost never happens for successive mint products. The Mint always seems to find a way to level the playing field the next year after being caught selling a unexpected rarity. So it comes down to whether you like the design or have been collecting the 1 oz APEs to justify spending $1,355.

  14. So Krates says

Earthling says, “…bring down this wall”. And lo and behold, the Berlin Wall DID come down…”

Curious how the same folks who wanted to tear it down now support building a wall.

  15. So Krates says

Too risky at 10,000 mintage unless you REALLY like it. Platinum prospects don’t look great vs. gold as cag? mentioned, economic growth slowing is negative for Pt. I was positive on the Pt/Au pair trade a few months back but unwound my position after just a small gain after deciding the ratio will take longer to revert than Iinitially thought.

  16. So Krates says

For those of you eagerly awaiting the PALLADIUM Mercury dime. DON’T hold your breath. They are slow rolling it at the mint and have no deadline. Mind you the legislation is only six years old.

Anyone ever heard of the palladium Martha Washington test pieces they struck in 2007? Mint rep said they are re-evaluating these strikes from back then. Also consulting with RCM about their palladium Maple program. He said they “learned their lesson” from the Platinum planchet issues and are planning on using multiple suppliers for palladium planchets

  17. Cody says

I am becoming very impatient waiting for the mint to announce a release date for the proof ASE this year. I am also assuming that they will eventually “surprise us” with a 30th anniversary ASE set. I just keep telling myself… deep breaths.

  18. NcCoinCollector says

In a world of negative interest rates Silver is poised to Pop Pop Pop.
Watch closely as Yellen and Fischer prep the American people for a rate cut -then negative rates here -then another Bailout(QE). When that happens PMs will surge. October surprise anyone?

  19. Dave SW FL says

Berlin Wall = legal citizens cannot LEAVE.

    US-Mex Wall = ILLEGAL non-citizens cannot ENTER.

Two completely different sides of the coin

  20. MarkInFlorida says

Thanks, Dave SW FL, exactly what I wanted to tell him. And GoldFishin, that’s my take on PT, long term, might be better than gold if gold really pops and they put some “windfall profits” tax on gold since everyone with paper assets will be jealous of goldbugs.

  21. Dave SW FL says

Penn Metals Group offering $100 pure profit ( but you pay mint shipping, so really $95) for your 2016 Platinum coin.

You’d need to get about $1700 on the Bay to match that, and it’s guaranteed. Wonder how many will flip for 7% gain?

  22. So Krates says

    Florida Mark and Dave.

A wall is a wall is a wall. Who is allowed to enter and LEAVE is determined by the government. The current stated intent maybe to control immigration however TPTB will have the ability to flip the switch once the wall is in place.

They are two sides of the SAME coin

  23. So Krates says

Felson, I was told? By whom a professor at Trump University with expertise in the Berlin wall.

Another purpose of the Berlin wall was to keep ideas and exposure to the west OUT of East Germany. The wall was actually constructed around the entire French, British, and US sectors.

Everything is black and white to you so it seems easy to grasp…like a child’s mind.

  24. says

Okay, everyone let SoKrats get his diatribe out of the way so the grown ups can talk about coins again.

Good luck to everyone ordering today.

  25. So Krates says

Sorry longarm but in response to earthling’s wall comment I made a one sentence observation about irony and the walls. Hardly a “diatribe”

I then went on to post about platinum.

Then I BROKE NEWS about the palladium program.

Instead of responses to my coin comments… I see 3 posters trying to fight about a stupid nonexistant wall.

  26. MN Printer says

I am disappointed with the choice of the Lion’s Club as a subject. What is next, the Shriners or Rotary International? These are organizations out of the past. Congress in my opinion has really lacked imagination in their choice of commemorative coin subjects. I have lost interest in collecting them.

  27. earthling says

If anything the choice of Commemorative Coin Programs points out the power of Lobbyists. Who are these professional bribers and exactly how widespread are they in our ” democratic ” process?

Maybe the common citizen needs a Lobbyist to represent us.

I suppose we will soon vote for a major lobbyist but the little rat lobbyists will still be eating holes all over Capital Hill.

  28. Zaz says

Not that I want to buy another gold coin from the Mint, but the Lions Int’l coin really should be made as a $20 double eagle coin to bring out the details in the reverse. The motif is well done. I’m sure some crafty entrepreneur is going to have some plated in gold,

  29. cagcrisp says

Those that are buying today to Flip, better think Twice. The Biggest of the Big Boys Online is offering 70s for $1,749.00 (as low as $1,697.40) and 69s for $1,549.00 (as low as $1,503.30)

Put those prices in you Formula and see what Margin you have.

IF you are Not buying to Flip, then Buy On…

  30. Dave SW FL says

Now there’s some low margin dealers.
Coins are no longer a hobby for many. More like low margin grocery store type businesses.
Must be nice to have guaranteed 70 agreements at low cost for slabbing.
Sure wish all the collectors would abandon the TPGs.
Elizabeth Warren, why haven’t those consumer advocates gone after the coin show hawkers for their lying false statements? Probably because they are totally unaware of the lies they tell to push the mint’s products to the unsuspecting at outrageous prices. 😬

  31. cagcrisp says

    $1,697.40 is cash or wire…

    SO…you can lock in a 70 for $1,697.40.

Try Buying for $1,354.95, Grading and Hope for a 70, sell on the bay( with pal) for 9%-13% and ship and see what you would have to Undercut the Biggest of the Big to make Any profit?…

  32. Felson says

SK if there was a way to filter your comments I would gladly do so. You do add coin related comments, but you also tend to inject your political one liners far more often than many others. Please stick to coin related posts which many of us come here to read, not the anti Trump or pro whatever else you feel the need to toss out.

  33. Dave SW FL says

    Blue Book observations:

note especially to newbies – prices are up since printing. It will be interesting to see if any modern premiums reappear. Study the Bay for realistic FMV before buying or selling from a dealer!

    Classic Commems –
    Pan Pac coins remain strong.
Last year’s strong are weak this year
Particularly weak Booker T & Carver coins.

    Moderns –

    Continued March downward in price
Especially weak Atlanta Olympic coins, Robinson Proof, Bimetallic Unc ( -2150 in 2 years), Capitol Visitors Center Unc ( -1350 in 2 years )
Interestingly, those circus coins (BBHOF) remain strong

    Proof Sets –

    1940s sets HAMMERED !!!

    Unc Mint Sets –

    Pre 1959 sets remain strong , especially 1947 ( from 900 up to 1600 in 2 years) and 1955 (from 200 to 455 in 2 years !)

    5 oz pucks

    2010 all continue to decline
Generally bullion and P version drop
Exceptions Acadia & Volcanoes up nicely
El Yunge & Chaco holding steady

    ASE –
    All down with “rarities” HAMMERED
    EXCEPTION – 2013 Enhanced up from $35 to $62 in 2 years

    Gold Eagles –
Almost all down with some very large burnished drops

  34. Erik H says

Dave SW FL, thanks for the observations.

I stopped buy Blue & Red books a few years back. I just use NGC trends for long term on slabs and eBay for short term.

  35. Felson says

I like the books for the information they provide. Most will tell you to ignore the “pricing” information they contain, but the actual data and pictures are worth the purchase. I don’t see the need to buy them yearly tho perhaps every 5 years to get the latest updated info.

  36. Dave SW FL says

Just interesting to see how nearly everything moves toward bullion in a bear market. Spouse coins and modern Commem collectors see their value decimated. I am in that camp. Interesting hobby.

  37. earthling says

I want a Hawaiian Commem , about an MS 65. Hopefully one of those could soon be mine at a decent cost soon. Probably got to bid in an auction.

  38. VA Bob says

Mark Rex – Our orders were within 9 of each other. Not a big platinum buyer, this will be the first I’ve bought. The design seems nice enough. For me it will not be an annual buy though.

  39. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

Goat – How are you able to ascertain how many have sold?

  40. Mr. Kairu says

For anyone interested in the 2oz silver Queen’s Beast bullion coins… JMBullion has them on presale for $3 over spot! About $20 under the going Ebay rate. I ordered a few love the design! 😀

  41. Mark Rex says

I bought the 2014, which was my first PT buy, and still have it sealed in the box. I ordered this one to have the 2 coin series to eventually pass on to my kids or sell in 14 years when it comes time to pay for collage. I really like the design. Wonder how many they have produced and if it will go into BO. If so, how long before the remainder are released.

  42. VA Bob says

Sleeper? Little interest for quick buck flipping? Too over-priced for basically bullion? All of the above?

  43. earthling says

Conditions are looking good for a sell-out. If there was no HH limits- they’d probably be gone by now. As it is sellout will probably happen by 12:40 PM.

  44. Throckmorton says

I wonder how many orders will be returned if there is no pop in the secondary market.

  45. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

GOAT AND CAGCRISP: Please tell us where you look to see how many have sold!!??

  46. 270on8 says

USM042892xx @ 12:12 EDT… I almost forgot about, and was shocked it only took less than 30 seconds to order!

  47. Throckmorton says

    GoldFishin says

    June 30, 2016 at 12:23 pm

I am 8500 orders before that

That means they processed over 2,000 orders in the first two minutes. Impressive compared to the bad old days.

  48. Goat says

Difference between order numbers and HH limit one. If Mark Rex order is figured on today’s order the number of orders is 4539. Assuming all orders that were for APE’s.

  49. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

And thank you for keeping us up to speed here at MNB!!

  50. Alex in MA says

    @cagcrisp
But GoldFishin already inserted thought of oversold into MNB and nothing will stop doubts now

  51. So Krates says

Fast Eddie, again it was a response to another poster’s comment about the Berlin wall which was not really coin related.

No truth filter, just skip my comments and shut up. As you’ve been told, your comments about comments are boring and worthless.

  52. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

I heard that there were excess 2016 APE’s hidden inside the Berlin Wall and someone who is handy with a metal detector can find them easily now that the wall came down!!!

  53. Dustyroads says

Sorry, no time stamp. It was just a moment before I posted. Something’s not right!

  54. gatortreke says

I like the design of the Platinum Eagle but it is outside my budget based on future wants.

    Dave in SW

El Yunge & Chaco holding steady: Interesting that the Chaco is holding steady given the ridicule heaped on it that it looked like a toilet bowl. I like the design but I have been to Chaco Culture so the toilet bowl reference isn’t what comes first to mind when I see it though I can see how it does for others.

    Mr. Kairu

For anyone interested in the 2oz silver Queen’s Beast bullion coins… JMBullion has them on presale for $3 over spot! About $20 under the going Ebay rate. I ordered a few love the design! : Thanks for the heads up. I love the design as well and ordered a few through the Coin Shoppe but at a higher cost. Have you obtained an air-tite or equivalent for this 2 oz coin?

  55. GoldFishin says

Is anyone’s last digit of order number an odd number? both of mine are even numbers, 3 minutes and 5000 orders apart

  56. Mr. Kairu says

@Gatortreke, no I have not. I am wondering if the capsules made for the Privateer 2oz silver series would work for these. Will have to see once they arrive!

  57. cagcrisp says

GoldFishin could be right. They have never used a Waiting List since moving to the new system. Always a possibility to prevent what happened with the Dime. Just sell 10% more and in effect you have a Waiting List.

    Possible…

  58. So Krates says

Dave SW FL – Thank you for posting about the Penn offer. Got me thinking and I decided to flip one over (different dealer).

  59. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

So Krates: I’m thinking about flipping one to a dealer as well. Are you willing to share who you’re flipping to or would you rather keep that to yourself at this point?

  60. IBEX says

Doubt I’ll ever see that last one I bought (must be like the last 50 orders) – gave it a shot anyway

  61. NC Stacker says

So the Mint put up their “wall” to stop sales.

This didn’t take long to sellout….

  62. Brad says

I caved and bought one after all, about 2 minutes before the “currently unavailable” status. Maybe people were calling to cancel as fast as new orders were being placed, since it didn’t sell out in the first 15 minutes! They got scared and bailed.

  63. VABeachEd says

I do not know how you got your numbers, but I just added an American Eagle Platinum Coin to my bag. Now I am going back and remove it. It is not sold out yet.

  64. says

    Ordered (internet)1 oz. PT @ 12:02p Order#4281XXX.

Received kick back e- confirmation from USMint @ 12:40p

    Good luck to all.

    Semper Fi

  65. Stuart says

I’m with Silky. I bought mine at 12:01 and didn’t get the confirmation from the Mint until about 12:45. At least I finally got something I actually wanted and didn’t have the sell out issue like in 2015 with the APE nor the 2016 gold dime. 🙁

  66. Zaz says

The Mint should be happy, APE collectors should be happy, everyone got a chance to buy one that wanted one, unlike the 5-15 minute frenzy of the last year’s APE and the Truman C&C. A one hour sales window is exactly the sweet spot for sales for everyone involved, secondary market sales notwithstanding. This release could’ve gone either way, probably the $1650-$1750 presales on the bay convinced a batch of fence sitters and latecomers?

  67. MikeinPA says

almost pulled the trigger on this one, waiting for the dust to settle and perhaps pick up a 70 at a decent price

  68. says

I put one in my cart, but when I saw one for sell on ebay, I decided against buying. Based on how few pre-sales sold, I think most of these were bought by flippers…..many will be disappointed at secondary prices….I think there will be many more sellers than buyers…just my thoughts.

I would of flipped this if I thought there was money to be made, as I need to keep plenty of funds available for the SLQ, WLH.

  69. cagcrisp says

I Sure don’t see this a Flip candidate unless something drastically happens. Big Boy put a ceiling on prices for Graded coins…

  70. MarkInFlorida says

In times of financial and political uncertainty, people invest in hard assets.

  71. Zaz says

Tomorrow should be interesting with the back to back APE/Nancy FS sales. Hope there wasn’t anyone who waited on the APE to buy with Nancy tomorrow. First day’s sales for her are probably impacted by the APE but should still be higher than Betty Ford.

  72. says

One just sold on ebay, bin, for $1475 + 9.75 shipping. Another sold for $1729.99, but I think under $1600 will be the norm in ogp.

But congrats to those of you that bought to hold and accompany your 2015….two very fine looking coins I would love to own, but most of us can’t buy (and keep) all the high priced Mint offerings.

As others have said, the release date for the SLQ should show up soom!

  73. Ralph says

I am thinking that the coins in the OGP will bring in as high a price as the graded 70’s, if not higher. Already one has sold for over 1700.

  74. Dustyroads says

My 12:30 order is a done deal with a second confirmation from the Mint stating “UPS Worldwide Express Saver Signature” as shipping method.

  75. earthling says

    @Zaz, lol…

” should still be higher than Betty Ford”

    Wow…That’s NOT a very High Bar…

  77. MarkInFlorida says

The Mint’s announcement email for this coin came at 12:07, after I already ordered. Good thing it wasn’t a 5 minute sell-out.

The 21st would be very appropriate for me. In honor of the SLQ, I have steered collecting to a certain genre for this year with my latest acquisition being a Danish West Indies 20 Kroner. If some one could tell me where to grab some Mexican Mint Service Medallions, it would be greatly appreciated.

  84. cagcrisp says

No remorse here. I didn’t buy for Short term. Here was part of an email I sent out 06/15/16:

    1. Either Gold is too high or Platinum is too low
    2. This is only the 2nd time in the past 30 years that Platinum has traded this big a discount to Gold
    3. In the past 10 years Platinum has traded 34% Higher than Gold
    4. Currently Platinum in trading 24% Lower than Gold
    5. Look at the prices on the bay for a 1 oz. Platinum Proof for ANY American Eagle and see how that compares to $1350
    6. You ONLY have 1 chance a year to get a Proof APE
    7. There is No bullion Platinum this year
    8. Since the inception of the 1997 APE this is the Largest spread between the price of Gold and Platinum in Favor of Platinum. Most of the time Platinum has been higher
    9. When the 2015 APE Launched Gold was $221 Higher than Platinum; Today Gold is $309 Higher than Platinum
    10. Forget about the foolishness concerning the 10k limit
    11. See #1 Again. Either Gold is too high or Platinum is too low

  86. Nik says

Don’t you guys think that SLQ mintage, like that of the gold Mercury dime, will be too high to be worth investing in? I agree w/cagcrisp, feel that for all reasons stated the APE was a much wiser buy.

  87. Eddie says

If you didn’t buy a 2015 APE or are planning to buy one then why buy the 2016 APE?

  88. Nik says

2016 APE is the most beautiful APE design since 1997, in my opinion. Given the dichotomy between the price of platinum and gold, I bought five NGC PF70 from MCM at $1,697 per, will sell when platinum crosses $1,400 in the next two years.

  89. Scott says

Cagcrisp, I totally agree with your 11 reasons for the 2016 APE. Platinum is cheap IMO, but unfortunately the premiums for platinum are high right now because the supply is so limited. I haven’t seen more than a handful of platinum coins at local coin shows for quite some time. At the current price levels, the proof strikes are a much better deal than the bullion issues.

  90. John Q. Coinage says

I used to care, I no longer do, sorry but the mint price over spot is a pure rip off, I don’t want to pay – maybe i will go to $1,400 maybe not, but in the future IF platinum explodes, this is just another platinum bullion coin. Sorry kids 10k is not a low #. MOre likely for silve to hit $40 b4 plat hits $1,500…we’ll c……

  91. Nik says

Same could be said for any prior year APE John, but according to the price manuals all PF70 are worth >$2,000 … It is a $100 face coin, the only one, which makes it unique.

  92. John Q. Coinage says

Regardless of book value, when the spot value exceeds the collector value they sell for & pay for spot not a premium. Collectors date proofs maybe, MAYBE proofs, Hard to believe people not corp/flippers, shills, etc. bought $13.5million+$ in <4o minutes. They may have book value like that but I think the mint is just ripping off collectors when compared to the spot price falls, also on gold as well, we are the Fed's ca$h cow, etc. I think time will tell but over the past few years the mint has really been corncobbing the collector quite bit… My thoughts & I got AU Merc, HArry C&C etc., ok but a virtual 50% premium I pass….can go to $10k I won't cry & i it does gold will be like $20k Silver $200……

  93. earthling says

You got to be into Plat Eagles because you like the changing designs. I’ve been a fan since 1999. It’s been a lonely road, very few fellow aficionados around. When mintages took a serious upturn in 2009, I dropped out. I got back in for the 2014 & 2015’s.

If the mintages stay at 10,000 or above, count me out again. The proposed 2017 design will also keep me out.

I like platinum eagles and have taken advantage of the lower platinum prices to complete my APE bullion collection. I have completed the 1/10 oz and the 1/4 oz and now working on the 1/2 oz.

The reverse of the 2010 proof platinum (Blind Justice) is one of my favorites. I found 3 NGC PF70 Early Releases for $1725, $1750, and $1799 (bin’s)
If you look at SOLD 2010 NGC PF70’S ER, the last one sold in April for $1553 + $10 shipping.

  97. joe#2 says

I still think the 1999 Platinum coin, The one with the Florida ” everglades ” the alligator, trees, water and bird is the nicest of all plat. coins.

  98. DBR says

I passed on the 2016 APE because I don’t collect them and they are pricey. I’d like to believe that the 2016 APE’s 10,000 mintage limit is low, but some of the comments here may be correct. It may be too high and affect its rarity analysis. If these APE’s are not rare, then growth in value is tied to bullion value or an increase in demand based on adding very affluent collectors/investors to the coin hobby/market.

My recent strategy is this: I’m spending my money on the coming gold SLQ 25c and WLH 50c pieces., just because they are beautiful and made of a noble metal. But also I’m in the market for the signature, stand-out coins between the years of 1983-2013 when I wasn’t collecting. These coins have had time to prove themselves in the market.

Everyone wants “sure things” (whatever that means), but I’m not real adept at speculating on recent mint offerings. I will always “collect” what I like, but I do have low risk tolerance on higher-priced coins if I’ve attached an “investment” motivation to the purchase.

  99. Tinto says

The changing reverse was also a big reason I chose to complete the Preamble APE’s … but no more big ticket items from the Mint for me .. too many yanking of the chain like the UHR 2015 gold becoming an HR, no silver medals in 2015 … etc. No more purchases of proof sets, etc.
I buy the occasional $5 commemorative because I like the cause or design and likewise for the ATB “P” puck like the TR coming up later this year, even though I don’t like the blasted, dull finish but I made an exception for TR. I will buy the bullion version too as I find them more attractive.

  100. blackbeard says

I would have to say to anyone who’s been collecting the platinum eagles congratulations.

  101. Dave SW FL says

    DBR
Just buy the ultra rare older coinage in its highest grade.
10,000 ASEs or one 200,000 coin….which do you think will appreciate more – even with insurance and storage cost….easy call.
    THATs investing.

What we are doing is collecting and maybe getting lucky once in a while. You can’t expect to get rich from a hobby because you fall in love with it. Investors never fall in love. If they do, they soon realize their mistake. And good investors never look back after a sale. Collectors generally do look back and regret.

Investors act with their brains, collectors act on their passion.

  102. GoldFishin says

Two coins now in my Platinum collection. I am happy with both of them…nice designs at a good price. I hope everyone that wanted one gets their order filled. I would be interested in knowing when someone with a very late order gets a shipping notice.

  103. earthling says

What really singed me in my Platinum fandom is when the stuff went up to around $2300/oz in 2007. The 1 oz Proof APE’s were really high priced, I forget exactly, but maybe around $2700 each? Anyway we had the economic meltdown and Platinum fell off a cliff in what, 2008? It bottomed around $750 , maybe a little higher.

It’s been a rough ride. Mintages headed up in 2009 and I headed for the door.
Finally I came back into the fold in 2014. Mintages for a 1 oz APE are about right at 4,000 – 5,000 . At 10,000 youre getting into pure bullion numbers. Way too high. The current Mint brain trust has too little brain, too much rust.

Something tells me the Plats are going the way of the Proof Gold Eagles – unlimited mintages. Unfortunately the people that are buying, dont seem to be aware of what they’re really buying. They’re buying Collector Coins, not bullion. They don’t seem like they have a clue. Further evidence is the fact they’re so into the slabbed 70 grade. Give them an autopenned signature they think they’ve become like God.

  104. NcCoinCollector says

Platinum is an industrial metal like silver so it’s price partly indicates demand in the global economy. Furthermore its mined mostly in Russia and South Africa so until they play nice with the US I would expect the price to remain depressed.
My question is , Anyone in for Reagan dollars tomorrow? I am thinking of getting a roll , bag or two.

  105. scott says

I like the proof platinum issues because of their rotating reverse designs (this is a big reason for the success of the Chinese Panda coins) and their lower mintages.

  106. GoldFishin says

Platinum $1033…..funny with all the excitement today of a 50 minute sellout, I don’t recall anyone commenting that PT was up $20 today. Something going on out there in negativeinterestrateland. 😉

  107. says

Looking at Kitco history, on 12/24/07 platinum was over $700/oz higher than gold. Platinum was $1544 and gold was $829….amazing…I didn’t realize that.

Looks like gold hit it’s high on 9/5/11 @ $1896.50

Platinum hit $1899 on 8/23/11….note, ..Platinum may of been higher at some point, but I just did a quick look.

It’s fun sometimes to go back and look at historical prices.

Silver peaked @ $48.70 on 4/28/11, but was back to $28 by year end.

  108. DBR says

@ Dave SW FL and @ Eddie

Agreed. There is wisdom in knowing those distinctions and what motivates a person to buy coinage. I sort of do both (collect and invest), but for sure I rely more on my passionate collector side. I want to enjoy the many pleasing aspects of the hobby and not be a speculator,

  109. Dustyroads says

GF…Unfortunately, I let go of my `15 Platinum last year, it was not an easy time. I managed to put last year behind me, so today when I saw that we were headed for a sellout, I logged on to make the purchase. At that very moment chaos broke out in the house with my wife and kids all needing something at once. You should have seen me sitting there at my desk trying to keep my cool knowing that I was running out of time. Brad was really late getting his order in, much later than I was at 12:30. I’ll comment about shipping though when I hear from the Mint.

  110. Barry says

With the recent increase in silver I haven’t seen any news about spiking coin / bar sales. The US mint still has SAE’s waiting for the AP’s to buy. Ads for low premiums on rounds are plenty. Maybe everyone is waiting for a price drop to rush in.

  111. Dustyroads says

AU and AG’s price uptrend beginning this year is an interesting looking one on the max chart. We’ve seen a lot of spikes since the decline, but this is the first real uptrend on the chart.

  112. Erik H says

@$19 an oz. is anyone willing to short silver? It usually drops in price after the 4th of July but by how much? Buy on dips the next one maybe short lived then parabolic she goes!

  113. Dave SW FL says

    Barry
The derivative (paper silver) market dwarfs the physical market. Until faith in paper ( gee, there’s lots of trees) crumbles, those who make up fake silver (paper) can really play games with pricing.
Just rest assured that SOMEDAY paper (got any Confederate script?)will go to its true value and so will precious metals. It’s a good idea to own the REAL thing.

A paper silver certificate would have been worth 8 gallons of gas in the past. Today it’s worth about a half gallon. That’s the power of paper. Someday the sheeple will wake up.

At least a couple of other dealers have the Beast now. Also, Anubis is not exclusive to Prov anymore.

  115. Brad says

    Dusty,

Yeah, I really cut my order close! But, it’s in “processing” mode and the credit card charge is pending, so it appears that I will actually get it. I must have gotten one of the last 100 coins or so!

  116. Dustyroads says

Haven’t read comments yet, but debated the APEs hard today. Some of the of the guys I really look up to most on here made me a little gun shy..however I always value their insights nor value their opinions any less. After I read the coming comments I hope I hate myself less. They need to bring back fractional versions of these always cool platinum coins ( younger collectors and I think my generation values them highly asnd simple as “cool/bad ass” (could help spur younger numismatics?!

Bought 5 2016 NA-C&C sets as well as a large amount of the 2015 sets believing they could be gone for good or close to it. I’m NOT a flipper, numismatic lover through and through. (Even learning to LOVE older US Coins I tried to push my self to do for some time. So I felt I could find a small buy/ sell opp with those 2015 NA C & C sets where I believe I got quite a few of the last remaining. My question is..how long to wait to sell /list for?!

This weekend I’ll be checking many boxes to see if the Notes held in place in hopefully most all sent to me ( first one checked..the note was all out of whack-bad start). Many more to check and I can keep you guys up to date on their serial #s if you’d like (hope some low 1s). You guys are the best, thanks for all your help to this newer numismatic obsessione. Any thing I can ever help to give back please name it. Thanks! (sorry for my novel)

Xena….could you elaborate on your earlier post of the “Beast” and the Privateer series. I’m a HUGE fan of those HR 2oz’rs and just saw the new Egyptian dog ones posted. While I agree it is best to own physical, most futures contracts and ETF holdings are not printed on paper but are represented digitally with zeroes and ones in an electronic network dependent on electricity. Most brokerages have tried to wean customers from paper statements and switch them to electronic statements. One discount brokerage I use does not even offer paper statements. The trees are thankful for this change 🙂

  122. says

DBR – I am of the firmly of the opinion that by 2020, the sister coin to the 2015 Platinum Proof, the 2016 APE will be of its own free standing in the market as a “signature, stand-out coin” 😉

Dave SW FL says, “What we are doing is collecting and maybe getting lucky once in a while. You can’t expect to get rich from a hobby because you fall in love with it. Dave – Nicely put, of the 7 years now I’ve been on this site, that falls in the top five of insightful things posted on this blog. Thank you, a lot of wisdom in those words.

FYI – JMB has Silver Beast’s for $2.99 over spot, they were $43.60/coin yesterday, I had been waiting 3 months for that to occur.., patience is a virtue. For you stackers out there, here’s my gift to you on this 4th of July weekend.

  123. MN Printer says

I don’t see the reason for the Mint to maintain a household limit on the 2016 Coin & Currency sets when only a third have sold in the first two weeks.

  124. MN Printer says

I think the British Royal Mint’s Queen’s Beasts is going to be a great series of 2 ounce silver coins (and gold versions as well) with ten different reverses starting with the “Lion of England” in 2016. Other reverses will include a griffin, a falcon, a dragon, a unicorn and a greyhound based on ten statues from Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

  125. So Krates says

    SHIPPING QUESTION ???

Only slightly worse than the actual mint employees are the call center drones. When asked what method the upgraded shipping would be (because it’s going to a PO box) they are baffled. Fedex DumbPost is the budget shipping method so one rep kept saying that is how it was going, but I kept asking, “then how is that an upgrade?” Another rep said they upgrade to UPS but I thought UPS does not deliver to the post office. I checked off the budget option but realized right after that I should have opted for expedited (flip to dealer). The call center reps said that in order to get expedited shipping at this point, they would have to cancel and reorder.

Anyone know what shipping method is used when the automatic upgrade is applied to a PO Box address?

  126. earthling says

After the Brexit caused the upswing in the metals markets, I ordered an assortment of Gold in anticipation of price increases. I got a shipping upgrade called ———-

Method: UPS Worldwide Express Saver Signature

The tracking number I got looks exactly like a USPS Smartpost tracking number. I try to track it and … nothing , yet. Just like with Smartpost.

Hopefully this will turn out OK.

****** This shipment is headed to my P.O. BOX

  127. ips_stuff says

I read someone’s post that indicated they showing there Platinum order processing and credit card pending. I would not assume you have a coin coming until you see the order status indicate SHIPPED. Anyone else ever have an experience where it went from processing to ….sorry.
I think that happened to me once in the last 10 years or so.
    Comments please.

  128. NC Stacker says

I passed on the APE as the TV shows and onliners are already started selling. On TV last night, CV didn’t have them in hand and they are already selling them PF70 UC. I know this is a nice coin( even if she has 5 1/2 toes) , but I’ll just sit on the sideline and watch with my popcorn in hand

Rick started on the gold dime last night too selling the NGC 70. Saying “this coin has legs”.

I think I hear the calliope playing in the streets followed by tumblers ( flippers)

    Happy Friday all.

  129. NC Stacker says

    @ips_stuff

This happened to may people with the 2014 C&C set. Anyone that bought after December 3rd didn’t get anything, yet the system said processing for many days then to be canceled.

  130. drew s says

Collecting coins, and investing in them is very fuzzy to me unfortunately. I was fortunate enough to have grabbed a 2015 APE, but I also collected a lot other 2015 items that probably will not hold up as well. Again, stuck between it being a hobbyist and ensuring I’m leaving good value to my kids. I did pick up a couple Merc Dimes this year and will probably wait for a next purchase until the 30th Anniversary ASEs come out.

One area I wasn’t fuzzy was in my 401k. Before the end of 2015 I moved 1/3 of my money into a Gold & Minerals Fund and is up 90% for the year. If only to have that much clarity all the time.

  131. GoldFishin says

@SO Krates- I also have a PO BOX, in the past all deliveries to a PO BOX have been via USPS, as UPS will not deliver to a PO BOX, unless you give them the physical address form of the PO BOX.
Until/Unless we know that this is a NEW UPS product that WILL deliver to a PO BOX, my plan is to call UPS once I have a tracking number and work out the delivery with them. I have had to do this in the past and it is an easy fix to ensure delivery with a simple phone call.
Maybe this is something new, OR maybe it is an oversight by the US Mint’s fulfillment center. ??

  132. Mr. Kairu says

@Xena, thanks for that info on the Beast capsules! I am not sure what I am going to do with mine just yet then.

  133. Louis says

There is a dealer who sells the right capsules for the beasts, but I can’t remember who now. I saw it on silverstackers. Will try to find.

  134. data dave says

Silver over $19, my guess is that if it goes over $20 the US Mint will up prices on their silver items. If not, the P pucks are going to start flying. Bullion pucks going for around $115 now up from $95 just a month ago. Hope they can hold out until Jul 14 when Harpers ferry comes out.

  135. cagcrisp says

Something has changed with the Mint’s shipping. I have had 2 Mint account for some time. Both do Not have a Physical Address, just a PO Box. Before the Winged Liberty Head dime offering I tried to set up and ‘additional’ shipping address to my PO Box from a third account. It would Not complete without a physical address …SO… at the time I just had it shipped to another location.

Again this week I went back in and tried to set up another Shipping address and again it would not complete without a physical address. The problem with physical address is that the physical address is a different zip code and the extension is something I don’t recognize…SO…In this instance I just did not use this account.

IF someone knows a back door method to set up a Default Shipping address to a PO Box WITHOUT having to enter a physical address I would like to know how to do it.

    I don’t like using a physical address for Anything…

  136. cagcrisp says

@data dave, You may have a different definition of ‘flying’. My definition of flying is that you will not see P pucks flying again…

  137. Dustyroads says

    So Krates and GF

I have a PO too. When I bought the gold mercs, the Mint shipped them UPS. I wasn’t able to track the shipment for some time, but UPS eventually handed the shipment off to USPS. After that I was able to see where the package was.

  138. Louis says

beast capsules (39 mm double thick) can be ordered from quality silver bullion.com. $1.79 each plus shipping.

  139. cagcrisp says

Those having 2016 Platinum proof remorse and thinking about a cancel or a return…

Pricing yesterday was based on Platinum prices of $950-$999.99

Thursday started a New Clock. Thursday AM fix was $1,004.00 and PM fix was $999.99. Currently Spot Platinum is $1045.00…

…SO…It would not be out of the question that IF the Mint offers some ‘cancellations/returns’ that in a couple of weeks or a month that IF PM’s continue running that the next time you see a Mint offering it will be $100 higher than yesterday. In the $1050.00-$1,099.99 range and you have $1,450.00 Mint offering…

  140. Dustyroads says

    Thanks Louis

cag, That’s an unusual problem. You should be able to have multiple addresses on an account. I ran through the buying process to check it out for myself with the only problem being that I got an alert saying the system didn’t recognize the physical address I chose at checkout, but that’s not a problem. I talked to CS and she says there’s no problem having multiples.

  141. Zaz says

    Cag,
The pricing would be a moot exercise if indeed they oversold yesterday in order to have a built in waiting list for cancelations and non-defective returns. One of the articles on the APE last month mentioned the mintage had already occurred at West Point to the maximum plus “some extra” above the max to cover customer exchanges. Looking forward to the overnight sales number to see where we really are with this release.

  142. baldwin says

The price decrease to the current price on the Pucks was at $20. I doubt they will increase the price again at $20.

Then again this is the mint and they have done stranger things.

  143. NC Stacker says

    @cagcrisp

I use a UPS store for my PO Box.. Technically you can’t call it a P.O. Box as they are not an official Post Office Box per say.

When I set mine up with the Mint, I had to call the Mint’s CS as the website had issues with the word “box” and forced it to a P.O. Box. So I have the street address of the store but have the box number on a second address line. And since it is treated as anon-P.O. Box address both FedEx, UPS and USPS make it there with no issues and I can see all the tracking details on orders. Plus this stops the Porch Poachers.

That said, I have the default addy as the box so orders thru the Mint are quick and fast every time.

Now I haven’t tried to open a second box to have more than one account with the Mint. But you could have one CC’s billing address for one box and a second CC billing address for the other.

  144. cagcrisp says

@Dustyroads , Try going through the process WITHOUT a physical address and it will Not let you complete. I don’t want to put down a physical address. I have 2 priors that I use Without a physical address…SO…something has changed…

  145. Dave SW FL says

I edited my delivery address prior to ordering and got the same non-recognize message. However, the system DID in fact make the change. Interesting quirk. Got an email confirm of default delivery address later in the day. Confirmation email had correct new delivery address, so everything should be OK.

  146. cagcrisp says

The United States Mint provided the following sales update on Friday, July 1:

“At 12:56 p.m. EDT, June 30, the 2016 American Eagle One Ounce Platinum Proof Coin (16EJ) went into a ‘Currently Unavailable’ status after the Mint received orders totaling the entire mintage of 10,000.

If the product is made available later to the public as the result of returns and cancellations, the most efficient way for interested customers to receive notification is through the use of the ‘Remind Me’ feature on our Web site appearing on the product page.”

  147. KEITHSTER says

@GoldFishing too funny yes I was at the plat. party yesterday but it was 11:59! I was going to try to hold out as long as I could ? So after checking out the quarters to see which ones I wanted to have and to hold but alas there is so many to choose from and I could not make up my mind? Then I spotted Her seems I have always had a thing for barefooted pretty girls with pet eagles!!!! So after I had Her in the bag and wanted to check Her out the dang website would not show me the box to confirm our order? Kind of like on the coin. But then I remembered a little trick I learned here and I think it might have been from you? After the Eisenhower C&C thing? To just keep pushing and hitting at were the box should be and sure enough boom I was in and she was mine! So finished up and blew a load of money that is then went and had a smoke!! So all is well even with out the stinking E-mail from the mint So Good Luck All PS. Glad to here you got 2:>

  148. data dave says

@cagcrisp, my definition of flying for the P pucks would be 24K in sales. While still a low number, this would be right at the borderline of the top ten so far. The last 5 issues are right around 17.5K which seems to be the collector base at this point.

Honestly what I would really like to see though is for the mint to use the 5 oz format and press and produce a one per year series of different design. I think the 5 per year and 56 coin series is way too much. I like the format but I am burned out with the current series and I imagine most others are also.

  149. Louis says

Dusty- The way I read it the foam ring is for the Salivate metal rounds. It says these capsules are esp. for the beasts, so I don’t think foam is needed. Think about the diameter too. It would need to be much less than 39mm to use foam since that would reduce it, but 39mm is what the coins are, so I did not get foam.

  150. Louis says

Ok, gotta get going to celebrate the holiday early, but wanted to say I called Quality Bullion and they said foam is only for Salivate Metal rounds. Beasts are 38.6 mm, so just a little room left, and you could cut some mylar flips into strips and insert inside to hold if you want a snug fit.

  151. So Krates says

Thanks all for the shipping info. I will be proactive with tracking etc and possibly call UPS as GF suggested.

Cagcrisp, some banks and credit cards won’t take a PO box as a physical address so I just type variations that the letter carrier will recognize but the compewter won’t. Like Pobox Pbox Pob ox , you get the idea. If you want a backdoor solution check here:

  152. Jerry Diekmann says

Bought my first platinum coin since 2003 – and my very first platinum 1 oz. coin. I stopped years ago when platinum started rising in price and the Mint eliminated the fractional coins. I wish the Mint would bring the fractionals back – some of the designs are quite nice and fractionals are the only way most collectors can buy platinum coins anyway.

  153. Theofie says

I only purchased because one of the metal companies sent me an email to buy it from me for 100 dollars over purchase price. I have no interest in the series but will happily take 100 dollars and use it to buy the silver eagles when they come out later this year.

  154. Gene says

I’m not going to pay any attention to the comments her in this blog. There was comments here that before the 2016 platinum coin release saying that it would not sellout so I waited till the afternoon to buy my coin and it was sold out. Now I have to buy it on ebay for a higher price. I’m not going to listen to anyone just buy my coins. My own decisions from kowm on.

  155. Gene says

Readers and coin collectors there is alot of wrong information being said in theses blogs. Do your own research when buying or investing in any gold or silver.

  156. cagcrisp says

@Gene, there were people on here that Did predict that 10k would not be a problem…

  157. says

Gene – if your read the post daily and digest some of what a few of those that are credible and consistent share, you would have easily seen that this offering was going to happen quick…

the only remaining unknown was that it was going to be available for 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, or two hours…, ??? 89,000 orders within 15 minutes was a surprise to most, though most should have expected availability issues by late afternoon.

My recommendation to you is that you refine your strategy as to whom you receive input from

  158. says

Gene – just in case you’re too lazy to read and process what I shared on Saturday, let me restate a more direct synopsis..,

if the SLQ has a mintage of 100,000 or less, you’ve got about 30 minutes, so you had better show up on time.

    And I say it’s coming 21 or 28 July
