2016 Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Quarter 3-Coin Set

16af_aSMALL

Today at noon ET, the U.S. Mint will release the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Quarter 3-Coin Set, which includes one Uncirculated quarter from the Denver Mint, another from the Philadelphia Mint, and a Proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint. This set has no listed restrictions on production or orders per household, and is available for $9.95.

The coins are packaged in a plastic case that displays each quarter’s obverse and reverse. A photograph of the actual site is included on the front of the holder, while a description of the location is placed on the back, with a certificate of authenticity.

This is the third America the Beautiful (ATB) quarter 3-coin set released so far this year. According to last week’s sales report, 2016’s Shawnee and Cumberland Gap 3-coin sets have sold 12,605 and 11,287 units, respectively. Products in this series do occasionally sell out, but the Mint has kept most of the sets available on a continuous basis, with 29 of the 33 quarter-designs released since 2010 currently available in this format.

The reverse design for the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park quarter was created by Thomas Hipschen and engraved by Phebe Hemphill. It features an image of John Brown’s Fort, where Brown and his men made their last stand during a raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory. Inscribed along the rim are HARPERS FERRY, WEST VIRGINIA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 2016. JOHN BROWN’S FORT is also included in the field below the building.

The obverse includes John Flanagan’s 1932 portrait of George Washington, along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, QUARTER DOLLAR, and a mint mark.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park was established on June 30, 1944, and includes land in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. The 2016 Harpers Ferry 5 oz. Silver Uncirculated Coin, due for release this Thursday, will be the final product issued with this design; the bullion version of the 5 oz. coin has been stuck at 34,200 pieces sold for the past three weeks.

The U.S. Mint’s next ATB quarter features Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota and will be released at the end of August. For more information on the America the Beautiful Quarters program, please visit the Mint’s Web site.

    From Wikipedia:

“John Brown (May 9, 1800 – December 2, 1859) was an American abolitionist who believed armed insurrection was the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery in the United States.
During the 1856 conflict in Kansas, Brown commanded forces at the Battle of Black Jack and the Battle of Osawatomie. Brown’s followers killed five slavery supporters at Pottawatomie. In 1859, Brown led an unsuccessful raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry that ended with the multi-racial group’s capture. Brown’s trial resulted in his conviction and a sentence of death by hanging.
Brown’s attempt in 1859 to start a liberation movement among enslaved African Americans in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (later part of West Virginia), electrified the nation. He was tried for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, the murder of five men and inciting a slave insurrection. He was found guilty on all counts and was hanged. Southerners alleged that his rebellion was the tip of the abolitionist iceberg and represented the wishes of the Republican Party to end slavery. Historians agree that the Harpers Ferry raid in 1859 escalated tensions that, a year later, led to secession and the American Civil War.
Brown first gained attention when he led small groups of volunteers during the Bleeding Kansas crisis. Unlike most other Northerners, who advocated peaceful resistance to the pro-slavery faction, Brown believed that peaceful resistance was shown to be ineffective and that the only way to defeat the oppressive system of slavery was through violent insurrection. He believed he was the instrument of God’s wrath in punishing men for the sin of owning slaves. Dissatisfied with the pacifism encouraged by the organized abolitionist movement, he said, “These men are all talk. What we need is action—action!” During the Kansas campaign, he and his supporters killed five pro-slavery supporters in what became known as the Pottawatomie massacre in May 1856 in response to the sacking of Lawrence, Kansas by pro-slavery forces.
In 1859 he led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry. During the raid, he seized the armory; seven people were killed, and ten or more were injured. He intended to arm slaves with weapons from the arsenal, but the attack failed. Within 36 hours, Brown’s men had fled or been killed or captured by local pro-slavery farmers, militiamen, and U.S. Marines led by Robert E. Lee. Brown’s subsequent capture by federal forces seized the nation’s attention, as Southerners feared it was just the first of many Northern plots to cause a slave rebellion that might endanger their lives, while Republicans dismissed the notion and claimed they would not interfere with slavery in the South.
Historians agree John Brown played a major role in the start of the Civil War. Historian David Potter has said the emotional effect of Brown’s raid was greater than the philosophical effect of the Lincoln–Douglas debates, and that his raid revealed a deep division between North and South. Some writers, including Bruce Olds, describe him as a monomaniacal zealot; others, such as Stephen B. Oates, regard him as “one of the most perceptive human beings of his generation.” David S. Reynolds hails him as the man who “killed slavery, sparked the civil war, and seeded civil rights” and Richard Owen Boyer emphasizes that Brown was “an American who gave his life that millions of other Americans might be free.”The song John Brown’s Body made him a martyr and was a popular Union marching song during the Civil War.
Brown’s actions prior to the Civil War as an abolitionist, and the tactics he chose, still make him a controversial figure today. He is sometimes memorialized as a heroic martyr and a visionary and sometimes vilified as a madman and a terrorist. Historians are divided on whether it is accurate to refer to Brown as “America’s first domestic terrorist”.”

    Terrorist.

Why weren’t these sets available back on Wednesday, 08 June for the coin launch in Harper’s Ferry? I looked for them…

It would have been a nice touch to have these sets available at the coin launch for purchase.., kinda a mute point now.

I was back a HF last night enjoying the view for the Maryland Heights overlook, for the east coast is it’s truly spectacular; would highly recommend it should you ever have a chance, go on a cool day.

Paddy, tried your email several ways, it’s that middle digit or word that apparently is the hang up.

IMO, The mint should just melt down those remaining 9k Mercuries and call it a day.
It’s insane that the mint is taking all this time deciding what to do with them. I think that’s what’s holding back the quarter and half. The dime should sell in OGP for around $275-$300 IMO..

They are waiting on the GRADING companies to finish grading joe#2…Hope that makes sense…

  4. So Krates says

Got a fresh, well struck “D” coin in my change last week. This design translates better than most to the small canvas of the quarter. Near prooflike finish.

I’d bet a gold dime you couldn’t tell the difference between my D coin and one from this set.

Soon I’m hoping to make a short trip to Delaware, my former home. On the way ,I’ll stop off in Harpers Ferry to soak up the History and current beauty of the place. Hopefully the US Mint will have the 3-Coin Set for sale at their gift shop. It’ll be worth the D.C. traffic to pick one up.

    On another matter….

I used to read about “survivalists” living out in remote areas of Idaho and Montana. What a bunch of nutcases I’d think. Well in reflection after years in the ratrace living with rats, working with rats, recognizing finally that many members of my family are rats ( and I’m a ratt, too 🙁 ). I’ve come to realize that these people (the survivalists) were way smarter than me. To achieve happiness and safety by being self sufficient has got to be the greatest achievement in todays USA. Especially with the dark outlook ahead of US. God bless the USA. And God help the USA.

Remarkable that the US gov’t is now making a coin commemorating John Brown’s fort, when the US gov’t hanged him for breaking the law and trying to start a race war. Obviously he, like all abolitionists, thought there was a higher law than the human laws that enforced the right to own black humans. I wonder what John Brown would do if he were alive now, given racial tensions in our country 157 years later.

  8. earthling says

Ha ha, I always referred to Delaware as Dull – a – where ?

After being trapped in the criminal cesspool of ….. i’d almost settle for dullawhere now. Ha not really. I’m thinking Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, or maybe even Alaska. Brrrr…..

@bobo says: “I wonder what John Brown would do if he were alive now, given racial tensions in our country 157 years later.”

I believe it is safe to say the racial tensions being experienced today are in no way the same or similar to those taking place in 1859. Saying that, there are a lot of people who appear to make them worse than they are, and many of those doing so are / or have run for public office pandering for votes. Seeding racial conflict is a great vote grabber apparently.

I think the grading companies have graded 95% of the gold dimes they will grade…sorry fm , I disagree that is what is holding up the release of the SLQ…don’ know what is, but ……we are all in the same boat…at the mercy of the Mint….all we know for sure is they will be released this year…I am not really concerned as to when…it is what it is

  18. Larry says

@ Steve, we don’t know anything for sure. The mint had the high relief silver medals on the schedule last year, but moved them to this year. The release of the Limited Edition Silver Proof Set goes through this regularly.
The ONLY thing FOR SURE with the mint is when the coins arrive in the mail, or UPS, or Fedex.

  19. says

@Larry….I understand what you mean. However, since the SLQ and WLH are celebrating the 100th anniversary (1916-2016), I’m sure the mint will Strike them in 2016….we all need to step back…we still have almost 6 months left this year. The 30th Anniversary proof silver eagles will come too. Also, I don’t have access to the Mints accounting books, but I really don’t think they are too concerned about which fiscal year the coins are sold. In fact, for whatever reason, maybe they want these coins in the 2017 fiscal year…who knows?

The mint didn’t release the 20th anniversary SAE set until Sept. or October, 2006

And who knows..we could have a special 20th anniversary gold buffalo of some kind….wouldn’t it be nice to have a four coin set (with fractionals of course) in both proof and unc.

Anyway, what comes our way,we don’t really know….but the Mint really has an opportunity to crank out some special pm’s/ sets this year.

As far as the Limited Edition Proof Set, they will probably just discontinue it. jmho

Old conversations, To refresh the board.

Even though the ATB quarters are currently honoring men, rather than showing a park, John Brown’s Fort is part of a National park, with historical significance, and even if it was true, the mint has honored confederates by placing their likeness on coins, and has memorialized the “valor of the Soldier of the South.”

As far as self sufficiency, that is an admirable goal, but to quote Van Halen “the simple life is not so simple”, besides “survivalists” have been waiting for the big “flush” since at least the 70’s. See the old Robin William’s movie The Survivors., not a great movie but Walter Matthau does his usual great work in it.

I would think that 20.0%, 21.1% and 5.2% respectively would be not be encouraging.

Those Percentages appear to be doing what the Mint wants done. It may be new people buying OR it could be the same people with multiple accounts. The Mint wants to expand their customer base and it appears that there is new blood in the checkout line…

earthling – you may be able to get the coin set in the National Park souvenir shop (at least if they have any marketing sense). I’m pretty sure Shenandoah NP was selling them.

Spend the $4.95 for shipping if you have to – it’s not worth $4.95 to go into DC just for that. The parking will cost you more, and your car takes a beating on the streets.

I also received my Reagan dollars last week. I thought it was a little better than the pictures, but it is still a awful rendition.

  28. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

In case anyone is interested: I received my Native American C&C sets (two of them: K00006317A and K00006318A). One of the reverses has a weird rim – it goes from the full width (roughly from 10:00-4:00) and becomes very tapered on the rest of the circle. I wouldn’t call it an “error” and it doesn’t seem to fit the definition of finning as I understand it. It does seem like poor manufacturing QA. 🙁 I can’t get a good photo of it… If you can picture how wide that rim is then you can probably also picture that rim tapering on part of the diameter. Anyway, just another box of “Mints” with surprises inside.

  29. Jerry Diekmann says

KCSO – I agree with what you are saying. A lot of these commemorative gold coins, plus almost all of the FS gold coins, will eventually sell at whatever the bullion price at the time is. Time is not on the side of holders of gold commemoratives.. Go all the way back to 1984 and you will find the current prices are not too much more than spot gold prices. During that time there have been some really beautiful coins, but also a fair share of clunkers. The FS coins to me are just mostly clunkers, honoring people who for the most part had little relevance in our nation’s history, IMO.

I have bought and sold with MCM. Never a problem. They have always been efficient, honest and professional in my dealings with them.

  33. So Krates says

It’s more difficult to track the performance of modern commems when you mix in the 70 grade. The deterioration in price might be due more to the inflated 70 grade then to the underlying issue. I think the 2001 silver buffs have held steady for a while now in OGP and besides, $295 for $16 worth of silver fifteen years later ain’t too shabby.

  34. Dustyroads says

That’s right, the 2001 Buffaloes have held this pricing for years now. Not too shabby is an understatement.
As for the commemoratives, they are the prime examples of what happens when a product line expands to the point of too many.
If a 1/4 oz. gold commemorative cannot bring a high premium in the secondary market when it is a mere 500 away from the #1 slot, it’s a good example of cautious investing, which says a lot about the type of people who buy these.
What the 1/4 oz. has going for it is it’s size. To the contrary, it may be that the difficulty in selling the FS coins may be in part attributable to it’s 1/2 oz. size.
It does appear that 1/10, 1/4, and 1 oz. are the sweet spots.

I wonder if we will ever see the Winged Liberty dime for sale again?

Currently 8,889 less than 125,000 limit.

Dan posted on 4/22/16 “The Mint sent out the following update this morning: “The status of the Mercury Dime 2016 Centennial Gold Coin will remain as currently unavailable until all order reconciliations and order cancellations have been processed.”

That post was 81 days ago. Order reconciliations and cancellations have stopped since there has been Zero reconciliations for the past 4 weeks.

CoinWorld article on 04/29/16 stated ““If we say that 125,000 is the mintage, this is what we want to sell,” said Tom Jurkowsky, director of the Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications. “It’s revenue, but we want to get the coins out to customers and ensure it is done fairly.”

That post was 74 days ago. Order reconciliations and cancellations have stopped since there has been Zero reconciliations for the past 4 weeks.

I’m curious if delays are due to plant or staff changes in the production unit.
Is machinery being “tuned up” to increase precision strikes? Is staff being (re)trained to properly prepare, setup, manufacture and inspect the products we desire (and they grind out)?
I’ve been looking back at the Dept of Treasury (US Mint) budget over the past several years and then looked at the various programs they have been tasked to carry out. There may be a budgetary issue that I can’t state for certain because I cannot find detailed info regarding labor, material, and plant costs.
Some (many?) US programs have seen their budgets slashed, while at the same time been asked to shoulder ever increasing responsibilities. I hope politics have not eked into every Cabinet budget.

  37. smalltimecollector says

@cagcrisp – I think we will soon hear what will happen with the balance.
Figuring it may have taken2 weeks for customers verification of payment and ship/receive, then 30 day max to return (some for exchange) and another 30 days for returns, we may be getting close to all of the legit orders to be satisfied. One caveat may be another round of return/exchange for defect may result in a 30 more days.
This would leave but 5 months for the slq and wlh to be offered.
THis can bring up a couple interesting scenarios. Will the two pending centennials be released at the same time. Is it possible they will be available separately, and in a “set” delivered in a presentation box that has a blank to hold the merc?
Regardless, my gut feeling is the mint is poised to release these (and other) products AFTER changes are made to increase quality and customer satisfaction of delivered products.

  38. says

Maybe the new director is being advised by the former Chinese director who cancelled our 2009 Proof ASE and made the United States lower case on the ASE and went to bed with two TPG’s. Probably want to sell off the Mint like they want to sell off USPS, education, NPS, etc, stc.

  39. Dustyroads says

Delays due to differing projects are always going to be an issue and difficult to manage. One recent article read that the proposed Palladium issue would probably be too difficult to swing this year because Mint employees were already overloaded.
Plus, who’s to say that there are any coins left after the finned rim coins are deemed unsellable and removed . All of mine are finned to a degree. I always suspected the Mint was walking into trouble when try announced they would be producing these tributes to thinner tolerances than originals, and in 24K, not 22K, as would have made the minting much easier. They apparently were successful in 2008 with the Buffalo fractionals, maybe not so much with these.
So, along the same lines as KCSO has expressed, the Mint may be having trouble, or as cagcrisp has eluded to, producing more. Either way, we are going to find out very soon.

I got my Nancy Reagans today, a Proof and a BU. The proof is the nicer looking Coin. After having received the ’16 APE, these FS Golds are just a bit anticlimactic. But they are the LAST ones so they do get a thumbs up from me, just the same. ** yawn **

Glad I didn’t ignore the APE as I had originally intended . In spite of the 10K mintage ,that’s one of the best ever USM Coins.

Fm, I think we may be talking about two different things., I don’t know …you said to joe#2..they are waiting until they finish grading..well I thought you meant the dimes. I took your comment to mean that the Mint was holding up releasing the SLQ until the grading companies finished grading the dimes….then you said you were talking about the dime…well so was i….you need to read again what I said or better explain what you meant. What do the grading companies have to do with the SLQ..?

I guess we may mean the same thing, but are saying it in different ways…..anyway, no big deal.

    Always wish you well fm…Steve

Yes yes sir, we were talking about the same thing in a different way. But I was thinking about the SLQ in anyway when I said the TPG’s

    Earthling,

Yeah, the 2016 Platinum Eagle is a “Coin of the Year” candidate for certain! I’m glad I decided to buy one, too. Once I had it in hand, I appreciated the awesome design even more.

  53. says

Cag, I always appreciate your your comments and analytical stats. I also have a degree in accounting and do a lot of excel spreadsheets on all kinds of things.

However, I am not sure I agree with your 2016 platinum proof analysis. You mentioned the 2015 and 2016 sold for 4,100…but what did each sell for?

I agree that the 2016 Platinum coin is a beauty….but every one is trying to ride it on the 2015 coin. And while the 2016 is the better looking coin, it’s mintage of 10,000 will keep it from ever being close in value to the 2015 Platinum.

You can buy the 2016 Platinum NGC PF70 (and not from the guy that promotes his coins as NGC 70’s but is actually selling coins in OGP….After he opens it) for as low as 1554.99

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/American-Eagle-2016-W-One-Ounce-Platinum-Proof-NGC-PF-70-Early-Release-PRESALE-/262510527700?hash=item3d1ed8c4d4:g:24UAAOSwgY9XdUoC

I’m sorry, but many of you have been trying to justify that the 2016 coin will perform as well as the 2015.
    Well, “that dog don’t hunt”.

I think that those of you that bought it because you like it….I think you made a great decision. But the 2016 platinum will not be a long time winner. You can usually tell in the first couple of weeks “sold coins” as to how well it will perform. 90% of the times the coins value peaks in the first month.

    Again, “MINT CUSTOMERS LIVES MATTER”

  54. GoldFishin says

Steve….this LINK from APMEX is what I think makes the 2016 and also made the 2015 a good deal in the long run. You get a nice Proof coin with a nice design and a decently low mintage for just about the same price as a bullion APE.
I agree with you, that the near 10K mintage Proof is highly unlikely to ever be as in demand as the 2015 or command as much premium, but I don’t recall anyone on MNB really making that prediction . But I believe it is still a good place to put some fiat. As always, thank you for your comments. You pretty much called it correctly right out of the gate how the ’16 would perform as a flip.

On the Platinum for 2016 –

You only get one. It’s a beauty. I actually feel sorry for those who had to flip it. To me it would be like finally getting a date with that hot cheerleader and then cancelling to take mom out for pizza. (The pizza is the $100 flip reward.)

  56. Dustyroads says

GF, I think that’s what made the `16 sell out as quickly as it did, it just appears to have potential. Enough to throw down the cost. Last year I flipped and wished I hadn’t, his year I can enjoy the APE regardless of mintage.

Steve, I enjoy your posts, and can tell I’d like you just from your writing style.
I don’t recall anyone here thinking the `16 APE was a flipping opportunity. However, I do believe most of us here recognized it’s value.

I have been on this blog as long as anyone…do you remember when Michael first had a site called Coin network? That was around 2007…..I was a member, but it was eventually taken over by people outside the US…….no disrespect to them, but their post were mainly about coins made outside the US.
That’s’ when Michael started Mint News Blog, World Mint Blog and Coin Update..

There were a lot of posters, but I can’t remember all their names. Seems like was poster was something like Mo Money or someting like that…..but he was so into himself…I could give you my handle back then……but well…….that’ also my eBay id…..some of you may already know it.

Thanks Dan for all the hard work you do. We don’ seem to recognize you for all you do.

Thanks Dan for the great job you are doing!

Goldfishin – I don’t know how helpful it is to compare the proof APE to the bullion version. Just because the bullion version is overpriced doesn’t necessarily make the proof a good value.

  59. So Krates says

2cents – If you are referring to Edmund Moy, he is American. He was born in the Motor City and was raised in Wisconsin. He was a TKE in college and he speaks with no foreign accent.

@ Dave SW FL says, “…I actually feel sorry for those who had to flip it. To me it would be like finally getting a date with that hot cheerleader…”

I fell like getting caught up in the excitement and keeping the 2016 APE, will be more like waking up in the morning with what you thought was a hot cheerleader, and it turns out in the light of day she’s a dawg.

Don’t feel sorry for us Pt flippers. With sales of 70s (like the one Steve posted above) already taking a loss, I’m OK with my $100 (7%) risk free profit. But of course, buy what you like (I think every single one of the Vistas of Liberty series blows these last two years away)

I’m still quite surprised with the following sales trend:

    2016 FS GOLD PROOF 1/2 OZ – REAGAN 1,713 +285
    2016 FS GOLD UNC 1/2 OZ – REAGAN 959 +167

Didn’t think she would have the momentum as Jackie, though these are still dismal in what I had expected for Nancy. Perhaps most are just treating it as a ‘sigh of relief’ purchase.

We’re at the 2nd week of the release now, sells will begin to taper considerable now.., they the mint struck a full 15,000.., ole Nancy will still be around when it’s time for the USS Ronald Reagan to enter the yards for overhaul (in a few years).

However, I am not sure I agree with your 2016 platinum proof analysis.”

As far as I know I’ve only Really “analyzed” the 2016 Platinum’s in 2 posts. Here is the 1st post:

    1. Either Gold is too high or Platinum is too low
    2. This is only the 2nd time in the past 30 years that Platinum has traded this big a discount to Gold
    3. In the past 10 years, on Average, Platinum has traded 34% Higher than Gold
    4. Currently Platinum in trading 24% Lower than Gold
    5. Look at the prices on the bay for a 1 oz. Platinum Proof for ANY American Eagle and see how that compares to $1350.00
    6. You ONLY have 1 chance a year to get a Proof APE
    7. There is No bullion Platinum this year
    8. Since the inception of the 1997 APE this is the Largest spread between the price of Gold and Platinum in Favor of Platinum. Most of the time Platinum has been higher
    9. When the 2015 APE Launched Gold was $221 Higher than Platinum; Today Gold is $309 Higher than Platinum
    10. Forget about the foolishness concerning the 10k limit
    11. See #1 Again. Either Gold is too high or Platinum is too low

    Here is the 2nd post:

@KCSO, “So Cag, what you’re saying is that crappy Platinum trinket coin that I paid $1,350 for that showed up at my house last week will now be a $1,450 coin? Ahh…Yes…

“And perhaps next week or the following week that trinket coin could be a $1,500 coin? Now that Platinum Ask price is $1101.” Ahh…Yes…

    “And my 2015 trinket 2015 APE that I paid $1,200 for 6 months ago may be pushing over $2,200 – $2,400? ” …Ahh…Yes…

“Only Suckers I see in this game are those that flipped.., or currently flipping the ’16 APE in the $1,500 to $1,600 range…Ahh…Yes…

HOWEVER, Don’t let little details such as Facts get in the way of a good story…

    Update to KCSO question…

    1. As of this AFTERNOON the 2016 Platinum proof will be listed on the Mint’s website at $1,450.00.
    2. Platinum is Currently trading ~ $1,090.00. To get to $1,500.00 we need a week Above $1,100.00.
    3. The last 30 trinket 2015 APE have averaged between $2,200.00-$2,400.00 with 5 of the last 8 trading above $2,500.00 in OGP.
    4. I know KCSO has no intentions of flipping between $1,500.00 and $1,600.00. He knows this a Long Term play on Platinum and what happens in the short term on the bay…happens…

@ Tony Moy – 2cents referred to Mr. Moy as “the former Chinese director”. I said he was American. I will not call him a Chinese-American for the same reason I won’t call Mr. Jeppson a European-American. Just say no to Us vs. Them thinking

  70. KCSO says

That coin is too beautiful to flip.., besides if it just rides along with spot from this point forward while covering the premium paid.., it will inherently make it a Winner over 99% of the numismatic offerings released by the mint in the past 5 years, no question about that! 😃

A $100 profit on a $1,350 precious metal coin is 7.4%.., in 12-24 months, many are gonna wish they type that beauty!

  73. Jeff says

99xx out of 10.000 WAY to many, as time goes by prices Will get cheaper I’m glad the 10xx love the APE the other suckers that think they will appreciate well that’s wishful thinking unless bullion prices go up that’s about it. Read um and weep nut crackers..

  74. Leo S. says

    @ Keep Calm

I agree completely. The Mint is shooting itself in the foot by leaving the 1 per household limit on the Nancy. Looks like gold is going down and if it keep dropping, the Mint will have to lower its price on FS. I see double digit sales next week and after that who knows. By leaving the limit, the Mint is discouraging sales to the limited collector base that follows this series.

  75. cagcrisp says

The mint has updated its platinum pricing. Now you have a Currently Unavailable $1,450.00 coin…

  76. KCSO says

Would be awesome though to get a larger Merc design in a silver-like metal with a 2016 date.., would be a nice finish to the Tribute series and allow for a 4 coin 2016 set of classic designs.., oh pardon me, I meant 4 crappy trinket knock offs so we all feel inclusive out here on MNB!
    😉

  77. So Krates says

Keep Calm & Stack On! says, “Hey Everyone! The Sky is Blue! Ah, I’m just waiting for a certain poster to come along later and dispute how that’s wrong too…” OT response to your OT comment

Color is a tough concept to write about but I can assure you that the statement “the sky is blue” is an oversimplification on many levels. The first being the sky is not even an object per se. It appears different colors at different times in different locations. Like the tropical waters of the Bahamas turn from blue to clear the instant you capture some in a glass, you can see the blue sky also has no color when you trap some in a plastic bag. Even if the sky was an object, color is an interpretation only present as an l within our skull and not actually present in the object. An apple is not red but rather it’s surface absorbs all other wavelengths of visble light except for the frequency which Englishmen have named red which is reflected back and enters your eye (and from there it gets even trickier).

But that is common knowledge… what I find more interesting is that most ancient societies had no word for blue. Ancient sagas, vedas and texts including the Iliad and Odyssey do not describe the sky as blue. Young children who have not been told the sky is blue will describe it in alternate ways. Some isolated indigenous cultures have trouble recognizing blue. Blue is relatively new.
