American Liberty HR and FDR Coin & Chronicles Set “Unavailable”

UHRBoth

A couple of high-profile items are quickly nearing sellouts after months of inching along with sporadic momentum. Michael White of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications told Mint News Blog that, as of today, November 3, the 2015 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin has sold 45,479 of a potential 50,000-unit mintage, while the 2014 Franklin D. Roosevelt Coin & Chronicles Set has moved 19,193 of its 20,000-set maximum.

Both products are listed as “Currently Unavailable” on the U.S. Mint’s Web page as of this writing. While it’s likely that small batches of these items will continue to be released as they draw nearer to selling out, the Mint is likely fielding its final returns and sales as it takes stock of remaining inventory.

The sales total for the Liberty HR Gold seems a bit low to move into Unavailable status, but the coin’s sales have picked up sharply in recent weeks, making an impending sellout increasingly likely. The coin has moved over 3,000 pieces in the last three weeks; commenters on this site have also pointed out that the 50-unit household order limit for the item has been removed, signaling a desire on the Mint’s part to divest its remaining inventory.

RooseveltSmall

The 2014 Franklin D. Roosevelt Coin & Chronicles Set has had a remarkably strong week considering it’s been on the market for almost a year; the set sold just under 900 sets since last week’s sales report and its sales now stand at 19,193 units of a possible 20,000.

The FDR Coin & Chronicles set has often gotten a decent sales bump around the releases of subsequent issues in the series, but the Lyndon B. Johnson set, launched last week, seems to have given it a bigger-than-usual boost. The brief, four-hour availability of that issue signaled strength for the Coin & Chronicles series as a whole, and may have enticed collectors to snap up the remaining Roosevelt sets. None of the four Coin & Chronicles Sets issued in 2015 have yet been declared “sold out” by the Mint.

Dear MNB, any indication provided that the mint intends to produce the remainder on the full mintage?

As much as the HR as been marketed, I’d be dumbfounded if they went into the Holiday season with 4,521 HRs left on the table with 2 months to go to EOY, while the sales trend has been a 1,000/week.

Would greatly appreciate it if you were able to ascertain the mint’s intent. V/r

  2. KCSO says

Diff Jeff, to your previous comment, yeah.., if you told me this time last year that the TR C&C would be the Key to something I’d buy into, I’d tell ya you were nuts. Amazing what 12 months make and how things have changed. This hobby certainly keeps you on your toes, gotta love it for that and the mint for keeping it interesting!

  3. Sith says

@KCSO – I seriously doubt they will mint more, but I’m not expert

    @ cagcrisp
“With all the Sales of the high relief Liberty in the last two weeks AFTER a price increase it just did NOT make any sense.” – A color catalog the U.S. Mint mailed to its customers about 1-1/2 weeks ago is being credited for the boost in orders

  4. JBK says

Anyone have any insight on returns? I promptly (within 7 days) requested a return label for three of the 2015 Enhanced Unc C&C sets I ordered. I printed it off and several weeks later have not sent them back yet (no easy access to a UPS location). I called cust svc and they told me that the returns center MIGHT send them back to me since it has been so long.

I had a friend order another 5 and I will return the bad sets under that order # once it arrives, but I was curious if anyone ever had a return refused due to elapsed time.

    Thx

  5. KCSO says

Samuel, totally different scenarios Brother. 2012 LESPS demand stemmed from lower Silver S set mintage for the most part and first of kind; TR C&C demand resulted from a entire change up in product offering and inclusion of the RP collector base.

That’s a first in quite some time 😉

  6. Mint News Blog says

@KCSO – They didn’t say. I asked if they were getting close to declaring the HR sold out and they responded with the most recent sales numbers. I’ll follow up next week if we don’t hear anything before then. – Dan

  7. Two Cents says

I notice that the US Mint has listed the price of $1,400 for the upcoming Platinum Proof coin to be released in December.

It’s unusual that they released a price in advance of the sale date, especially when it’s still TBA. I wonder if it’s going to be released soon, maybe next week?

I’m also curious about the $1,400 price tag. At current spot and according to the Mint’s pricing grid, the price should be $1,350.

  8. cagcrisp says

Mint Numbers are Out. Nothing that I follow had any adjustments, however, the Mint used November 2 instead of November 1. Fall back an Hour and the Mint moves Sale and Production numbers a whole day…

  9. Alfred E. Numismatic says

Well, my “cheapness” finally paid off (or will if I ever sell at the right time). Today I received my LBJ C&C, 3 rolls of S Quarters, a PDS version of the Homestead quarters (since all the “S”s were sold out), and an FDR C&C set thrown in (figured I’d better to help complete the set) And low and behold, timing was right for popping on the FDR. But the bonus was finding not one, but SEVEN! – WDDR-004’s (the double die with the pump handle in the lower right #6 window pane) in my P roll. The stamp date on the box is 2-17-15, The WDDR-004 die happened early in the year. Now just how many are in the total Pop remains to be estimated. Plus – Feb 17 is my Mom’s birthday (the one responsible for sparking my numismatic interest. She must still be putting in a good word for me, bless her heart!

  10. NcCoinCollector says

WoW! Was not expecting FDR sell out. l should have bought one when I had the chance.

  11. says

Alfred, sounds like you did good! Please excuse my ignorance, but how much are those WDDR-004 quarters worth? Also, how more would they be worth if they were certified with that designation by NGC or PCGS? Thanks

  12. Dustyroads says

Alfred E. Numismatic, That’s an amazing story, and with the stamp on the box made on 2-17, your mothers birthday. Plus you got some of the most interesting error coins. Thanks for sharing.

I looked at all the mintage figures for the 2014 AtB “S” clad quarters.
They all are hovering around 1.2 and 1.1 million and all still available, except for the Great Smoky Mountain quarters which sold an astounding 1,724,780.
That should be an all time high if I’m not mistaken, but I haven’t checked closely enough to be certain.

  13. Alfred E. Numismatic says

@Steve says:” how much are those WDDR-004 quarters worth? Also, how more would they be worth if they were certified with that designation by NGC or PCGS?”

They’re worth whatever anyone will pay for them. I’ve seen anywhere singled & not graded for anywhere from $16 on up. For the candy coated version of Kool Aid fame that you mentioned, check the bay solds for the corresponding grade. Maybe Cag has some stats he could share, but since it isn’t AG (gold), I doubt that he’s followed these)
The time stamp (I believe) on the box indicates 02:37:30 @ 2-17-15, which means the PDS rolls were packaged on that date and time (?) if I’m correct.

  14. says

    Alfred E. Numismatic said:
… And low and behold, timing was right for popping on the FDR. …

Just a friendly suggestion about your future comments: low ≠ lo.

  15. MarkInFlorida says

That upcoming $1400 price for a proof platinum eagle is a big premium over the metal price of $968, but the going price at APMEX is $1368 for a bullion platinum eagle and $1668 for a proof, but most are out of stock.

  16. Jerry Diekmann says

Glad I bought the American Liberty gold coin/medal and the FDR C&C sets. I think they will be good investments over time.

  17. KCSO says

Surprise, surprise… 2015 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set Release date went back to TBD

  18. KCSO says

GF, thinking you’re about right with your long positions, otherwise there wouldn’t be much left to tell.., kinda like the remainder of 2015. We’re inside 60 days now for the fireworks to commence🎉

  19. Jerry Diekmann says

Next year should be a banner year for Mint products. Two great commemorative clad, silver, and gold coins honoring the National Parks Centennial and Mark Twain, the gold centennial coin commemoratives (which I hope will also be struck in silver), possible 30-year anniversary sets for the ASE and AGE coins, plus the Reagan C&C set. It would be nice if they could finally change that bland Mercanti design on the back of the ASE (use the original reverse of the Weinman Walking Liberty half dollar), and the “family of eagles” design on the AGE could be changed to the original that St. Gaudens crafted back in 1907 for the gold double eagle A palladium coin might sneak through Congress – it is receiving a lot of lobbying from the mining company in Montana that produces it. Maybe they will even have platinum fractional coins again – the only way I could ever buy this metal. I will be glad if the Reagan RP is the last of that kind of finish.

  20. Two Cents says

    Dustyroads,

Actually, according to the US Mint’s Sales Report of 10/25/15, the Great Smoky Mountains S-Mint quarters have sold in the amount of 1,360,780.

The highest mintage (or sales figure) ATB S-Mint quarter is Puerto Rico’s El Yunque at 1,680,140.

  21. Dustyroads says

Two Cents, You are absolutely right. I went back and checked the numbers and it turns out I fat fingered the calculator.

  22. Two Cents says

Ha ha, Dusty, “fat fingered” … I do that all the time when balancing the checkbook.

As for the ATB “S” quarters, the trend of their sales seems to be heading downward over time. I wonder when we will see mintages under a million.

  23. gary says

@Jerry… I’m looking forward to the National Parks commemoratives to tie in to my set of ATB “P” Mint 5 oz. silver. At least the silver dollar & maybe the full set if I can afford it.

  24. Alfred E. Numismatic says

Thanks D.R., I always have respect for your candor of the English language.

I knew I’d hit a gnu Lowe when I’d thought about the possible misnomer of misspelling lo.

  25. So Krates says

Not to pile on, but A.E.N. referenced the symbol for gold as “AG”. The correct symbol for gold is “Au”. Ag is the symbol for silver. Spelling is one thing ,but these chemical substances are elementally different.

  26. Alfred E. Numismatic says

Ag! (substituted for “Arrrgghhh!)There goes my PM Lysdexia in the AM. AU indeed it is. Can you tell I wasn’t a chemistry major? It’s developmentally disassociated disorder with the “ag” in Cag’s handel, as he’s very deep in Au & Ag. Ok,, I’m officially bowing out of this copundrom. Rest easy and dream “Coins”

  27. gatortreke says

My little secret for remembering the correct symbol for silver (Ag) and gold (Au) is to associate Ag with Argentina. According to Wikipedia, the name Argentina is derived from the latin argentum or silver (plata in spanish). Given Buenos Aires is on the Rio de la Plata (silver river), it is easy to associate the two for me so I have no trouble associating Ag with Argentina/silver.

  28. fmtransmitter says

Great find Alfred…Do you plan to send them in? I believe the highest grade so far is MS65 but could have changed..

  29. Alfred E Numismatic says

    fm,

It’s tempting, but I’m sort of a stickler for non candy coated coins. There are some 66 & 67’s out there. I’m quite sure some might be 65’s and one or two possibly a 66 or 67. Again only worth what a buyer would pay. I’m just happy to have found them in one roll.

  30. KCSO says

HR has been price adjusted downward, still not available, though the price is right…

Oh, & it just showed in the Holiday Gift Guide email that just showed in my inbox.., so that must mean the mint is striking more! Hehe

  31. Larry says

Since all the info about the Limited Edition Silver Proof Set has been pulled from the mint’s website, I wonder if they are going to do another one of their surprises?

  32. says

Ag, Au– yeah those elements. After the chemist married his female associate, the first thing they bought for their house was a periodic table.

  33. Sith says

@KCSO – I still would not hold my breath, the BHOF literature showing all the coins went out well after the sellout on all the PM items.

  34. says

Oh Sith, I was just kidding; I’m really quite indifferent on it, I think thePhelps and I were very much aligned on this one. Though I still have eye open for a loose auction.

JD above captures most of the potential for 2016, and hence why I’m selling everything not bolted down to amass a nice reserve, don’t want to be left say’n, “woulda, coulda, shoulda”

With everything in life, there’s an opportunity cost! 😉

  35. A Different Jeff says

It looks like the mint has forecasted a continuing decline in interest in the ‘S’ mint AtB quarters. All except Everglades should be off sale by now, but it looks like they are trying to get rid of the last remaining stocks. Homestead ‘S’ rolls had a much lower sales number than any previous issue before going ‘unavailable’. Kisatchie is getting close (4436 vs. 4478); if it goes unavailable in the next week or two, we’ll know the mint has definitely reduced production.
I’ve noticed the first week sale has been a fair indicator of final sales – first week is about half of total sales.

  36. KCSO says

VaBeachSteve- haha, too funny.., need one?

I wonder if the mint will have 200 Trumans & Ike’s for sale in Baltimore?

  37. A Different Jeff says

Looking back at the first several weeks of the High Relief coin, there were net returns of about 2,000. Many who ordered in those first weeks complained about numerous quality issues, so we may well be drawing near the total they struck. Perhaps there will be an additional striking to bring the total to 50,000. I don’t believe these coins have a legislated maximum, unlike the commemoratives. They may strike an additional 4,500 and sell the whole lot, going over the 50,000 by a few.

  38. thePhelps says

@ADJ…I’ve been buying these in tandem with the 5 ounce puck… when I order the puck I grab the S rolls…

@KCSO… yeah still pretty much a MEH on the Liberty. It serves no viable reason to even exist – other than as an experiment in development for the mint. Over priced and underwhelming…

  39. thePhelps says

@ADJ… the Liberty has no legislation what-so-ever… it exists as a function of the sale team at the mint. They can mint whatever they want …

  40. Tinto says

    @thePhelps

And the Mint made it for the bulk buyers , they must be in bed together at least on this piece (anyone leaving the Mint to join the private sector during this time ??) , HH limit of 50?! for a $1400 or so gold coin? Gimme a break and even then they couldn’t sell out … and it isn’t even an original design just tweaks here and there mostly to the obverse .. to the St. Gaudens … and the whole process stunk starting with the UHR which became an HR and no silver medal ….. culminating with the HH limit (I guess there are rich households with dozens of kids like in Saudi Arabia needing gold coin gifts )

  41. VaBeachSteve says

@ KCSO ….. lol …..need one? I was going to ask you if you needed a box? I’m pretty sure I have a box or two in my closet. Did you see the big seller on the Bay dumping 30 graded BHOF golds this weekend?

  42. thePhelps says

Tinto… yeah the initial sales showed basically large buyers buying large quantities… and since then it has languished. I still have no idea what the buyers thought they were getting. I read that it is the “1st” $100 coin and think so what – they stamped $100 on $1100 dollars worth of gold and charged $1400+ for it… the history of coins in the US has the gold coins reflecting the value of gold to the price of the coins… this coin should have had $1100 stamped on it and I might have actually purchased one. The design was an attempt to push a new direction – if you look at the obverse – but then they took old design suggestions for the reverse… over all it was a hot mess in my opinion.

  43. KCSO says

VaBeachSteve. No, though I did see the one that starts with a P dump a bunch of 69’s and a truckload of $1s about two weeks ago.

It was like total capitulation, Nonstop auctions! His silvers had corrosion like some of mine. I think the mass unloads were timed to the playoffs and World Series.

Thanks for the offer! I went a little BHOF Happy, think I’ll be good this lifetime.., and next, at the circus!

  44. VaBeachSteve says

So if it was the large buyers that bought all the Liberty’s, how come they are not plastered all over the Bay? As of today there are only a 110 listings on the Bay which is minuscule in comparison to the 45,000 purchased. I think this coin has been a huge success so far if you look at the facts. In less than 6 months this coin is almost sold out (not to shabby for a $1500 coin). Resale values on the Bay have been pretty consistent. I know resellers are not making big profits, but they are certainly not taking big losses. I recall some here saying this coin would sell for spot …. Well, I’m still waiting . I like my Liberty and hope it turns out to be a winner but if it doesn’t I’m still ok with it. I believe in buying what you like

  45. KEITHSTER says

Oh Oh Here we go ! Now that it is almost over maybe we can rename the HR the Hemphill Revisited ? Ever since someone posted a link to our Phebe on here there it was those eyes that chin them cheeks ears neck !! Check all hers I know the no living person thing on a coin but it don’t say no living parts right? So more power to her must be nice to see the new you on a $100 gold piece !! But looking today for more pics of her which are hard to find would love some of her younger come on puter sleuths show us some. It also looks like some of her other stuff has it also? Sorrrrrry PH but sooner or later ya know? Glad to hear that you all had no trouble with the LBJ’s C&C’s ! Wish it was the case here::>:>:> Better Luck All:<::>:>:>:>:>

  46. Xena says

LBJ sets finally came today. One set perfect, one has a spot on the RP, although might be on the plastic. Mint sure knows how to get those medals right. LBJ medal is rather meh IMO, but it’s well made.

But more exciting than that, my numismatic Advent calendar came today! Can’t wait until Dec 1 to see what they put in this thing.

  47. Xena says

AEN – thanks for the story re your Mom. Agree with GF – God bless em. I’ll add a plug for the Dads that got us started. My Dad just passed about 3 weeks ago. He’s definitely looking out for me – won the coin club raffle and found a BUNCH of coins in a coin star machine last week.

  48. Jerry Diekmann says

AEN – really off-topic now, but did you know that Jim Backus played the hapless father wearing an apron to James Dean in the classic movie “Rebel Without a Cause”? I can’t help but think that Dean would have been a mega star had he lived. He only made three films, “East of Eden”, “Rebel Without a Cause” with Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo, and “Giant” with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. He died at the age of 24 and all three films became classics, primarily because of the characters he played.

  49. Fmtransmitter says

LBJs showed. The RP doesn’t have that weird smudge finger print type thing under lady libertys arm so thats a good sign. Maybe get a 70 this time….I think they look pretty darn perfect actually. The medal I think could be better but I haven’t sent those in for grading and don’t plan to. I think that would be easier to counterfeit though. I truly see edge numbering in the future for the hobby. Along with a matching COA. Even then there still could be issues but if everyone were to at least enter them into say NGC Collector’s Society it would make it that much more difficult to sell knock offs…

  50. Fmtransmitter says

@Xena: Condolences for Father passing and glad to read he is with you still in your hunt for coin treasures…

  51. Fmtransmitter says

@KCSO: Expect to see more of the mass listings. Many were invited to sell unlimited auction style listings with a max final value fee of just $5. I got lucky enough to have been invited. Have a bin of collectibles I been meaning to sell for many years and may do some with that incentive…

  52. GoldFishin says

Sorry about your loss, Xena…my condolences and prayers for you and your family. It’s odd you mention that I left out Dads in my post last evening, it’s the first thought that entered my pea brain after I clicked the “Post Comment” button. Not everyone has been blessed with great parents, for those of us that have, we should be very grateful.

  53. GoldFishin says

Low An Bee Holed…….there are only 3 USM gold proofs remaining and 41 quarter oz. AGE’s left in current inventory. Soon, only going to be the 1st ladies left. 😉

  54. stephen m says

I’ve like the HR Liberty. I sent the first one back to the mint for quality issues. The second was very nice and was a keeper. I rate the HR right up there with the 2009 gold UHR. It’s a nice pair.

I think this is a phenomenal idea! I would be more likely to end my “cheapness” campaign motto and would highly consider investing in the gold (no longer – if actually minted) trinketry . Let’s push the mint for congressional acts on this one!

  57. Alfred E Numismatic says

The “Actual ‘legal tender’ for the price purchased” mint coins Act of 2015″ (or 2016) Let’s lobby!

  58. Alfred E Numismatic says

The mint would increase coin sales the public would invest, and we’d all come out a winner. Keep the clad trinkets selling at current premiums for proffit & deficit reduction. If the price of precious metals happens to fluctuate after minting, that’s the gamble the mint would have to face. The coins value would only be reflected in the year minted!

  59. Alfred E Numismatic says

or rather… the coin’s legal tender value would only reflect the price of gold or silver for the year in which it was minted. Then its not too much of a long term loss gamble for either the mint or the public.

The Mint needs to be more Transparent. You (Mint) know what is going on and certain others (AP’s/dealers/employees) know. How about sharing that information with the End Consumer so at least we have a more even playing field?…

We know Mint employees read this blog, just simply send an email to Dan and say whether or not you are going to Mint more high relief Liberty’s OR are these just canceled/returned/not accepted’s. You know, we don’t.

VaBeachSteve, what’s the plan with the circus coins? Forgetting about them for a while? A few handy for a rainy day? On the 5+ year plan? Jus curious.., while supply has dropped considerablely across certain ‘variants’ I thought by now we’d see a tad bit more momentum. Have you seen any trends? I need to double check though it actually appears that ogp may be breaking out, of all things.

    longarm, fm, GF – thanks.

Definitely blessed with great parents and grateful for it. Dad was born in the depression and the family was lucky to get thru that. Good reminder how lucky many (most?) of us really are today.

Jeff, & hence why there’s a new pack of hacksaw blades in the garage for the 69’ers, though unfortunately they look better than any big boy 70 I’ve purchased. And I better stop with that.

KCSO …… I’m leaning towards the 3 yr plan. The inventory seems to be finally winding down on the BHOF gold’s & Silver.(Under 100 listings each). There are still a few low ball sellers that need to be weeded out before we can start the move back up, On a positive note, I’m starting to see listings for OGP around the $75 mark & graded 70’s around $125-$150. I don’t think we have much longer to wait before we can unload some and turn a profit. I’m in no rush to sell my gold coins

  75. Dustyroads says

Sell, but hang on to as many as you can. You should be able to see the silver dollars selling in the $150.00 range in OGP before long, and classics they will be.

Just noticed today that Gainesville Coins no longer lists the premium over spot that you have to pay for “junk” silver coins. They made it so easy for me to track the premium! Now I will have to WORK to see what’s happening. Basically, the real price of silver to purchase retail has never gone much below $20 per ounce. At the recent low the premium was $6.39, the highest premium I have ever seen. I can remember back when silver was $36 per oz that I was buying BELOW spot
Guess too many were staying away with over 40% premium. Kinda embarrassing for them, I guess.

  77. Dustyroads says

cagcrisp, That C&C sell was right on what someone would pay if they were going to buy them individually. I suppose the seller could have gotten a little more for the Truman, but I doubt they’re complaining.

@ Dustyroads says: “You should be able to see the silver dollars selling in the $150.00 range in OGP before long…”

I see a few less for sale but besides being optimistic, what leads you to believe these will triple in value?

You nailed that one. I think some of their stories is what helps us cope with the great recession. In addition to the box date coincidence, Mom was also born in 1929 on her dad’s dairy farm in Monroe, Wis. He was the sole “milk man” for the town, and it was his coin collection that my Mom had. Much of that collection were coins that he and Grandma had collected from his milk routes.

Jobs number came out MUCH hotter than expected Thus rate increase is Back on burner for December Thus Gold reacted accordingly.

I love it when everything comes together…

  81. Dustyroads says

So Krates, The word soon is subjective. As for my belief that they will rebound, I classify then in the same category as the 2001 Smithsonian commemorative silver dollars which rendered the iconic Buffalo nickle redux. I think we all are still overwhelmed by the BHoF release and still probably for the most part are feeling ho humish about them. I have to expect that this will change over time and they become coins that will end up on the new collectors lists of must haves.

  82. So Krates says

When pondering the future price of the BHOF dollars I also was thinking of the 2001 Smithsonian Buffalo. I wasn’t following commems at the time but I think it hit the $300 mark at some point. It is now and has been for a while basically a $100 coin. I’m not sure when it leveled off but despite the fact most people like it, it is NOT a strong seller. Something about dropping 3 digits on a common $12 piece of silver doesn’t sit well with most buyers. Also it doesn’t help that the 2001 dollar is almost identical to millions of generic silver buffalo rounds that sell for $15. If a private mint starts making “baseball rounds” that will not help. I realize the BHOF are different (because they are physically different among other reasons) but the price trajectories seem quite different. These were one of the few issues I was lucky enough to flip at the (current) top. It will be very interesting to see where these end up down the road.
