2013 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set

Today, June 4, 2013 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin sales of the 2013 Uncirculated Coin Set or “Mint Set”. Along with the previously released 2013 Proof Set and 2013 Silver Proof Set, this represents one of the Mint’s core annual sets.

2013 Mint Set

The 2013 Mint Set includes two separate folders containing 14 coins each from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. This makes for a total of 28 uncirculated quality coins. Specifically, the following coins are included in each set:

  • 2013 P & D Lincoln Cents
  • 2013 P & D Jefferson Nickels
  • 2013 P & D Roosevelt Dimes
  • 2013 P & D White Mountain Quarters
  • 2013 P & D Perry’s Victory Quarters
  • 2013 P & D Great Basin Quarters
  • 2013 P & D Fort McHenry Quarters
  • 2013 P & D Mount Rushmore Quarters
  • 2013 P & D Kennedy Half Dollars
  • 2013 P & D William McKinley Dollars
  • 2013 P &D Theodore Roosevelt Dollars
  • 2013 P & D William Howard Taft Dollars
  • 2013 P & D Woodrow Wilson Dollars
  • 2013 P & D Native American Dollars

The US Mint has introduced a new packaging style for the set. The folders contain an image of the American flag on the front. The folder containing the Philadelphia Mint coins is accentuated in blue, while the folder containing the Denver Mint coins is accentuated in red.

The price of the 2013 Mint Set is $27.95, which is unchanged from the prior year. There are no stated product limits or ordering limits in place.

Last year’s Mint Set had sold out in January resulting in a total availability period of about eight months. The last reported sales were 392,224, representing the lowest sales total since 1963. This seems to have driven some higher secondary market prices. A survey of recently completed eBay auctions shows 2012 Mint Sets realizing prices of more than $50 per set.

Numismatic Gold Price Increase Possible

There is a chance that prices for the United States Mint’s numismatic gold products may be increased tomorrow. Under the Mint’s pricing structure, a change occurs if the average London Fix price from the prior Thursday Am to the current Wednesday AM is within a different tier than the prior week. As an additional criteria, the Wednesday PM Fix price must agree directionally with any potential change.

Based on the data available so far, the average weekly gold price will likely fall within the $1,400 to $1,449.99 range. This is one tier higher than the range used to determine the current prices.

Whether or not the price increase takes place will likely come down to the Wednesday PM Fix price. If this is below $1,400, then a price change would not take place. If it is $1,400 or higher, then prices would be increased proportionally by $50 for each ounce of gold content. If applicable, pricing changes have usually been implemented around mid-morning on Wednesday.

The impacted products would include the 2012 First Spouse Gold Coins, 2013 commemorative gold coins, 2013 Proof Gold Eagles, and the 2013 Proof Gold Buffalo. The pricing tier established would also determine the opening price for the 2013-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle to be released on June 6.

Lower Prices for Silver Proof Sets

According to a notice published today in the Federal Register, the United States Mint will lower the prices for several numismatic annual sets containing silver coins. The products include the 2013 Silver Proof Set, 2012 & 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets, and the 2013 Congratulations Set.

2013 Silver Proof Set

The 2013 Silver Proof Set contains a total of 14 coins, with five quarters, a half dollar, and dime struck in a composition of 90% silver. Each set contains net silver content of 1.33823 troy ounces, with an additional face value of $5.06 worth of base metal composition coins. Sales for the set began on May 2, actually the same day that the US Mint lowered prices for a slate of other silver numismatic products.

The original price for the set was $67.95. The notice indicates that the price will be lowered by $7.00 to $60.95 per set. As of the latest sales report, customers have ordered 214,477 sets at the higher pricing.

The 2012 & 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets went on sale January 10, 2012 and January 8, 2013, respectively. These sets each contain five quarters struck in a composition of 90% silver, yielding silver content of 0.9042 troy ounces.

Each set was originally priced at $41.95. Prices will be lowered by $5.00 to $36.95.

The 2013 Congratulations Set went on sale on April 30, 2013. The product contains one 2013-W Proof American Silver Eagle within special packaging designed for gift-giving occasions. Sales for this product began shortly after the US Mint suspended sales of the individual proof Silver Eagle for repricing.

The set was originally priced at $64.95. It will be reduced by $5 to $59.95.

While individual silver numismatic coins have seen their prices adjusted on several occasions over the past few years, this represents the first price changes for the annual silver proof sets since March 2011. Back then, prices were raised after the price of silver had risen to around $35 per ounce. Subsequently released sets carried the same prices established at this time, even as the market price of silver ranged more than $10 per ounce higher and lower. On a few occasions, sales for the products were suspended when silver rose very quickly, but on each occasion sales were resumed without a price change after the market price of silver receded.

The coins are packaged in three plastic lenses which are placed into a redesigned outer cardboard box, which features the Washington Monument at sunset on one side and images of each park, President, or coin on the other side.

The 2013 Silver Proof Set is priced at $67.95, unchanged from the prior year. There are no stated product limits or ordering limits in place.

Last’s years annual Silver Proof Set had sold out in early January, after being available for about seven months. The final reported sales of 395,443 established a new low for the product type by a considerable margin. The 2012 Silver Proof Set currently commands a healthy premium on the secondary market.

Numismatic Silver Coins Re-Priced

2013-seThe United States Mint has published a notice in the Federal Register indicating new prices for certain silver numismatic products. Three of the products have been suspended since April 15, pending a price adjustment. With notice of the price changes published, sales should resume soon.

The 2013 Proof Silver Eagle will see its price reduced by $5 from $62.95 to $57.95.

The 2012-P Chaco Culture 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin will see its price reduced by $50 from $229.95 to $179.95.

The 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set will see its price reduced by $10 from $59.95 to $49.95.

An updated price has also been indicated for the 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle, scheduled for release on May 28, 2013. The price is now indicated at $48.95, which is a reduction of $5 from the previously indicated price of $53.95.

As can be seen, the US Mint is reducing the prices of the 2012-dated products by the equivalent of $10 per ounce of silver content. The prices for the 2013-dated products are being reduced by the equivalent of $5 per ounce of silver content.

Notably, an updated price has not been provided for the 2013 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. All five designs are listed as “On Sale Date To Be Determined” on the US Mint’s Product Schedule.

2013 US Mint Happy Birthday & Congratulations Coin Sets

Today, April 30, 2013 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin sales of two newly created products, the 2013 Happy Birthday Coin Set and the 2013 Congratulations Set.

These products expand on the idea of including coins in special packaging targeted towards gift giving occasions. In 2012, the Mint had introduced the Birth Set, which was targeted as a gift to mark the arrival of a newborn. This product achieved some mild success with more than 40,000 units sold, resulting in the continuation of the offering in the current year and an expansion of the product line to include other occasions.

Happy Birthday

The 2013 Happy Birthday Coin Set includes five different proof coins struck at the San Francisco Mint and bearing the “S” mint mark. The specific coins are the 2013-dated Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Mount Rushmore National Memorial Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar.

The coins included in this set are similar to the 2013 Birth Set, except for the quarter. The Birth Set contains the first quarter of the year featuring White Mountain National Forest, while the Happy Birthday Set includes the last quarter of the year featuring Mount Rushmore.

The five coins are placed within a folder and outer sleeve illustrated with balloons and gifts. A space inside the folder is provided for a personalized message.

Each set is priced at $19.95 with no stated product limit or ordering limits. This represents a reasonable price point for a gift, but not a great bargain compared to the full annual 14-coin 2013 Proof Set, which can be purchased for $31.95.

Congratulations

The 2013 Congratulations Set contains one 2013 Proof American Silver Eagle. Images show the coin with the “W” mint mark for West Point. The coin is placed within a folder illustrated with gold, silver, and black ribbons. A space within the folder is provided for personalization.

This set is created for use for many different occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, retirements, and graduations.

Each set is priced at $64.95. There are no stated product limits or ordering limits.

The US Mint recently suspended sales of the individual proof American Silver Eagle for repricing. The last available price was $62.95, which means the Congratulations Set would have had a modest premium of $2 over the standard individual offering. After the price reduction is implemented for the individual coin, the premium for the Congratulations Set packaging will expand.

Numismatic Gold and Platinum Product Price Increase

Based on the available data, it seems likely that prices for the US Mint’s gold and platinum numismatic products will be increased tomorrow. Prices for these products are based on a gird and may be adjusted as frequently as weekly based on changes in the weekly average London Fix prices of the metals.

Two criteria must be met for a price change to take place. First, the average weekly price from the prior Thursday AM to the current Wednesday AM must be within a different tier (established at $50 intervals) than the previous weekly price. Second, the Wednesday PM price must agree directionally with any change.

In the most likely scenario, as long as the Wednesday PM price of gold is greater than $1,450, then a price increase would take place. The prices for the 2012 First Spouse Gold Coins, 2013 commemorative gold coins, and 2013 Proof Gold Eagles would be increased proportionally by $50 for each ounce of gold content.

In the most likely scenari0, as long as the Wednesday PM price of platinum is greater than $1,450, then the price for the 2012 Proof Platinum Eagle would be increased by $50.

Price changes have typically been implemented around mid-morning Wednesday.

2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Uncirculated Coin Set

Today April 25, 2013 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Uncirculated Coin Set.

2013-atb

The set includes uncirculated versions of the five 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The sites depicted on this year’s quarters are White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial in Ohio, Great Basin National Park in Nevada, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Maryland, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota.

packThe ten coins come within a display folder which includes images from each of the sites on the front, with brief information about the sites and coin specification information inside.

Each set is priced at $12.95 each. There are no household ordering limits or product limits indicated.

The coins included in this set are described as featuring “sharp, intricately detailed images”. From past experience, the coins included in the US Mint’s Uncirculated Coin Sets are superior to the circulating quality coins included in bags and rolls. The US Mint previously indicated that the uncirculated coins are struck on special presses using greater force than circulating coins.

Later in the year, the US Mint will release the 28-coin 2013 Uncirculated Coin Set, which will include the coins released in the present set. The full 28-coin set is priced at $27.95 and scheduled for release on June 4, 2013.
