2012 Kennedy Half Dollar Bags and Rolls

Today, May 15, 2012 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint will begin sales of the 2012 Kennedy Half Dollars in bags and rolls. Since 2002, this denomination has not been produced for general circulation, but only distributed by the US Mint within various numismatic products.

The Mint will offer a 200-coin bag, containing 100 coins from the Philadelphia Mint and 100 coins from the Denver Mint. This are placed within a canvas bag sewn shut with an indication of the “P” and “D” mint marks, the date, “Kennedy Half Dollars”, and the face value of the coins.

Each bag is priced at $139.95. This represents an increase of $5 from the price charged for last year’s similar bags. Over the past two years, the price has increased by $9.

There will also be two-roll sets of the 2012 Kennedy Half Dollars available. The product consists of one 20-coin roll from the Philadelphia Mint and one 20-coin roll from the Denver Mint. These are packaged custom US Mint branded wrappers, which indicate the year, mint mark, face value, and issue.

Each two roll set is priced at $32.95. This represents a decrease of $2 from the prior year. Two years ago, the product was priced the same as this year’s offering.

For 11 years, the half dollar has been produced for collectors only. During this time, mintage levels have diminished, but seem to have stabilized around 1.7 to 1.8 million coins per year per mint facility.

At the time of this post, the two roll sets of 2011 Kennedy Half Dollars still remain available for sale on the US Mint’s website. It is possible that sales will conclude to coincide with the start of sales for the current year products. Although there hasn’t been much consistency over the years for product sales ending dates, most recently the US Mint seems to be concluding sales of numismatic bags and rolls when sales of the current year product begins. In the case of denominations with multiple designs, this has been occurring when sales start for the design one year ahead in the schedule.

Chester Arthur Presidential Dollar Rolls

The United States Mint will begin sales of rolls and boxes of the Chester Arthur Presidential Dollar Rolls today April 5, 2012 at 12:00 Noon ET. This is the 21st release of the Presidential Dollars Program, but the first issue which will not be distributed for circulation.

Under the authority of the Treasury Department, production of Presidential Dollars for circulation was suspended in mid-December. By law, the Treasury Secretary has the authority to “mint and issue coins… in amounts the Secretary decides are necessary to meet the needs of the United States.”

In order to fulfill the requirements of the Presidential $1 Coin Act, the series will continue to be produced in limited numbers, sold directly by the United States Mint at a premium to face value.

A section of the Presidential $1 Coin Act does require that each release of the series be made available to depository institutions in unmixed quantities during an introductory period. I suppose the Treasury Department is concluding that depository institutions can order the coins in unmixed quantities from the Mint at a premium to face value, thus fulfilling the requirement, although it’s hard to imagine any bank actually doing this.

The United States Mint will offer 25-coin rolls of the Chester Arthur Dollars from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. The wrappers appear similar to the previous year and include an indication of the design, face value, and mint mark. The price has been set at $32.95 per roll, which is less than the price of $39.95 charged for last year’s rolls.

New products available today include 250-coin boxes and 500-coin boxes from the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. These are priced at $275.95 and $550.95. The rolls included in the boxes also contain seem to contain the custom wrappers.

Orders are subject to the standard shipping and handling fee of $4.95. An additional shipping charge of $7.95 per box applies to the 500-coin boxes. (With this extra charge, it works out cheaper to buy two of the 250-coin boxes instead of one 500-coin box.)

At a later date, the Mint will also offer 100-coin bags of the Chester Arthur Dollars. These will be priced at $111.95 each.

Preliminary production figures for the Arthur Dollars indicate that the Denver Mint struck 2.8 million coins and the Philadelphia Mint struck 2.94 million coins. Additional coins may be struck during the calendar year if warranted by collector demand.

The US Mint has indicated that the bags, rolls, and boxes will remain available for one year from the initial on-sale date or until the corresponding release from next year goes on sale. The same policy is used for the America the Beautiful Quarter bags and rolls.

Chaco Culture National Park Quarter Bags and Rolls

Today April 2, 2012, the United States Mint began sales of numismatic bags and rolls for the 2012 Chaco Culture National Historical Park Quarter. This represents the twelfth overall release for the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

The reverse design of the Chaco Culture Quarter features a view to the west of two elevated kivas that are part of the Chetro Ketl Complex, the north wall of the Chetro Ketl, and the north wall of the canyon. This was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

This was the design that had been recommended by the CFA, indicating that it best conveyed the vastness of the setting and the Native American construction that has given cultural significance. The CCAC did not make a recommendation with one member commenting that it was a “difficult subject” to convey on a coin. It was also mentioned that none of the designers had actually visited the site.

The US Mint is offering two roll sets of the Chaco Culture Quarters, which include one 40 coin roll from the Philadelphia Mint and one 40 coin roll from the Denver Mint. As in the past, the rolls have special wrappers which indicate the release, mint mark, and face value of the contents. Each two roll set is priced at $32.95.

Also available are 100-coin bags from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. These mint sewn canvas bags include labels indicating the release and mint mark of the coins, with the face value printed on the bag. Each bag is priced at $34.95.

The Chaco Culture Quarter bags and rolls are expected to remain available for one year from the initial product release date.

The numismatic bags and rolls for the seventh release of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program featuring Olympic National Park still remain available for sale. These went on sale April 4, 2011 with an indication that the products would remain available for sale for one year. As such, sales should be concluding on Wednesday.

Other News

The US Mint recently added listings for the Chester Arthur Presidential Dollar 250-coin boxes and 500-coin boxes to the product schedule. These will be released on April 5, 2012, the same date that sales of the 25-coin rolls are scheduled to begin.

The US Mint had previously indicated that these larger quantity boxes would go on sale at some future date after the start of sales for the rolls. Offering the rolls and boxes for sale on the same date is a welcome development. If collectors want to purchase the coins in quantity, they won’t have to pay the higher premiums attached to the rolls.

Another interesting bit of information is available for the 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set, which is scheduled for release on May 1, 2012. The US Mint has set a product limit of 100,000 for the sets. This is the first time that a limit has been established for this product type. Sales for the comparable 2011-dated set have reached 64,423 to date.

On the world coin news front, the Perth Mint has released a number of interesting new products today, including a new Year of the Dragon Set and a kilo sized proof Silver Koala limited to 500. You can find more information at World Mint News Blog.

2010-P Abraham Lincoln Rolls Sold Out

According to the US Mint’s website, the 2010 Abraham Lincoln Presidential $1 Coin Rolls from the Philadelphia Mint have sold out. These are the specially packaged numismatic rolls offered by the Mint for each issue of the series. The coins included in the rolls are the same as those issued for circulation.

The Abraham Lincoln Dollar Rolls originally went on sale on November 18, 2010, meaning that they have been available for just over seven months. The 25-coin rolls from Philadelphia have sold 49,300 units according to the latest sales report.

At the time of this post, the Denver Mint rolls remain available for sale, although they have a back order date of July 7. The sales report shows slightly lower sales at 48,770 units.

Numismatic products that feature Abraham Lincoln have always been popular and this product has been no exception. The sales levels are well above of all other Presidential Dollar rolls that are currently offered by the US Mint, several of which have been available for longer periods of time. The longest available rolls are those featuring James K. Polk, which originally went on sale on August 20, 2009.

Of the sold out Presidential Dollar Rolls, the only ones that tend to bring a big premium are those featuring William Henry Harrison. These rolls sold out in less than two months, with final sales of 30,000 from each mint. The continued premium is somewhat perplexing as a few subsequent issues also sold out quickly at the same final sales levels, but do not command a premium.

Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter Bags and Rolls

The US Mint will begin sales of numismatic bags and rolls of the Gettysburg National Military Park Quarters today, January 27, 2011 at 12:00 Noon ET. These products contain circulating quality coins that are packaged in US Mint branded wrappers or canvas bags.

The Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter is the sixth release of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The reverse design shows the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument, located at the battle line of the Union Army at Cemetery Ridge. The obverse features John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington with the original details restored.

The US Mint offers 100-coin bags from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint, or a two roll set containing one 40-coin roll from each facility. Packaging for each product includes the name “Gettysburg National Military Park”, the state abbreviation “PA”, the mint mark, and face value of the contents. The Gettysburg Quarter bags and rolls are expected to be available for one year after the product release date.

The bags containing a face value of $25 worth of quarters are priced at $49.95 each, and the two roll sets containing a face value of $20 are priced at $39.95 each. Orders are also subject to an additional shipping and handling charge of $4.95.

This pricing represents a significant increase from the levels of last year’s comparable products. Throughout last year, the 100-coin bags of quarters were priced at $35.95 each and the two roll quarter sets were $32.95. Considering the difficulty many collectors are having finding the America the Beautiful Quarters at banks or from circulation, the increased pricing seems opportunistic.

Starting in 2010, the US Mint also removed a bulk option that was available to collectors and replaced it with a super bulk option that is only feasible for larger coin dealers and mass marketers. The US Mint used to offer 1,000-coin bags, containing $250 face value worth of quarters, priced at $309.95 each. In June 2010, the US Mint introduced the America the Beautiful Quarters Bulk Purchase Program. Orders could be placed for bulk bags containing 200,000 coins, with a face value of $50,000. The cost would be $51,500 plus pick up by a licensed carrier must be arranged.

Last year, sales of the America the Beautiful Quarters bags and rolls were relatively strong. The first available Hot Springs Quarter products have sold about 46,000 two roll sets and about 9,000 of each 100-coin bag.

Following the price increases, I think more collectors of the series will start evaluating other options. This might include calling more banks until quarters can be located at face value, buying on the secondary market where rolls can be found $15 or less, or getting together with a group to purchase and split up a bulk bag.
