Harrison Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set

The Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Medal Set for William Henry Harrison and Anna Harrison will go on sale at the US Mint on April 7, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET. Past releases for these interesting little sets have proved to be very popular.

Each set includes one 2009-P Uncirculated William Henry Harrison Presidential Dollar and one Anna Harrison First Spouse Bronze Medal. The coin and medal are placed on a custom designed card featuring portraits of the President and spouse. The sets are priced at $7.95 each.

The two coins included in the set are already (or will be) attainable through other US Mint products. The 2009 Uncirculated William Henry Harrison Dollar will be included in the 2009 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set which goes on sale later this week. It will also be included in the regular 2009 Mint Set, which should go on sale some time this summer.

The Anna Harrison First Spouse Bronze Medal is already available for sale individually, priced at $3.50. You can find this product on the US Mint’s website here. The medal will also be included in the 2009 First Spouse Bronze Medal Set, which will include all five of the 2009 First Spouse Medals. This product is slated to go on sale in the winter.

Despite the separate options, many seem to prefer the distinctively packaged coin and medal set and have been willing to pay up for some of the previously sold out sets. I wrote previously about the First Spouse Bronze Medals outperforming the corresponding Gold Coins. Many seem to have taken note of this and started paying more attention to the medals. Recently, sold out products containing the medals still seem to be appreciating, but not as much as some of the earlier issues.

The US Mint still has the two prior coin and medal sets available for sale, which feature Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren.

Update: The product page for the Harrison Presidential Coin and First Spouse Medal is now posted here. The US Mint also appears to have raised the price of the set to $8.95, although a prior press release announced the price at $7.95.

5 Spouse Medals this year? Am I missing something or is it just a typo?

    Thanks.

  2. Michael says

There will are five since John Tyler had a first and second wife. The five will be:

    Anna Harrison
    Letitia Tyler
    Julia Tyler
    Sarah Polk
    Margaret Taylor

  3. Brad says

I wonder if the Mint will use the same picture of John Tyler on both sets, or if they’ll change his picture for the set with Julia?

  4. Anonymous says

Since there are in fact 5 spouse medals for 2009, I think we can rest assured that the Mint will certainly raise the selling price by at least $3.00 for the set. Perhaps more. Having set a new price, the only mystery is will they lower the price for the 2010 – 4 spouse sets? – Breezy

  5. Brad says

I think the price will be left at $7.95 per set. The only difference is that you will have to pay it five times this year instead of four.

The gold coin for Julia Tyler is what is really going to hurt the program this year. Five designs instead of four equals two more gold coins that must be purchased to keep the sets going (Proof and Uncirculated). Some of the First Spouse gold coins are going to end up with SHOCKINGLY low mintages, making set completion later on very difficult and expensive.

Louisa Adams is only two months away from making the number of possible Uncirculated complete sets less than 3,800 from the looks of things. The 2009’s will very likely come in even lower than that. I know that not many people seem to care right now, but later on as new collectors come along they are going to be competing for the ridiculously low supply of some of these coins!

Well that’s pretty cool. Thanks for the info. I have been collecting the Bronze Medals since the start of things, but hadn’t realized some of the Prez’s had 2 wives. Were there anymore? Just curious.

I also noticed that Whittman now has an album available for the Bronze Medals. I prefer Dansco, so I’m waiting to see if they will follow suit, or not.

    Thanks Again…

The other year with 5 First Spouse Medals/Coins will be 2013, with Ellen Wilson and Edith Wilson- the first and second wives of Woodrow Wilson.

This product appeared on the “Upcoming Products” page on the Mint website today, and the price shows $8.95 for it. Inflation, I guess.

  9. Michael says

That’s interesting. They issued a press release with the price listed at $7.95.

Different departments must not be communicating with each other again.

  10. The Yankee says

I noticed on the Mints’ site on the Product Availability/Upcoming Products that this Winter the “4 Medal Spouse” set will be ready. I’m wondering if this is a typo, on their part, or maybe they’re going to sell two types of the 4 medal set because of the extra medal for Tyler?

Mint confusion and proposed pricing info appears to be taking a turn for the worst. It seems, using the global economy as an excuse, every governmental, municipal authority and service facility everywhere is tripping over it’s self to raise prices, jack taxes, or cut offerings of normal services. Few look to be using skills to run their businesses, the old basic values are disappearing. This is not meant as a political comment, but the Mint is no different. Witness the 2 roll Lincoln cent fiasco and price ripoff. I hope the Mint can get it’s act together since they seem to be wandering without a rudder. Director Moy needs to start directing his people. – Breezy

$8.95???? Someone needs to clue the Mint in on a well known secret: – we are in a global and domestic finaancial recession, raising prices for the same quality product doesn’t fly. They are most likely feeling frisky after having ripped off cutomers for those Lincoln cent rolls. I wonder if Pres. Obama is aware that an arm of the US Government is ripping it’s citizens. It’s really not the extra dollar, it’s the principle.

  13. Curiouser and curiouser says

Wm. Henry Harrison dollar bags and rolls are gone, and the presidential and first spouse bronze medal 2-coin set is $1 higher than those issued before it.

    What’s going on?

    Michael,
Thank you for the 2007 stats.
Something tells me this year’s numbers will much lower.Maybe it’s due to a magic $8.95 price?

Just received 5 Anna Harrison medals. All are going back. All are mottled. Anyone else see this?
