John F. Kennedy Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set Release Details

KennedyThe United States Mint has announced it will open sales of the Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set-John F. Kennedy at noon Eastern Time on Thursday, July 9. The Kennedy set will include one uncirculated John F. Kennedy Presidential Dollar and a bronze medal featuring the portrait of Jackie Kennedy found on the popular Jacqueline Kennedy First Spouse Gold Coin, released on June 25.

As with previous Presidential Coin and First Spouse Medal sets, the coin and medal are to come affixed to a dense plastic card featuring portraits of the President and the First Lady, with historical information printed on the back of the card. Also included is a certificate of authenticity. The sets will be available for purchase at $9.95 each.

The Kennedy Coin and Medal Set will be the third of four such releases in 2015. The Harry S. and Bess Truman Set, released on April 29, is now available for purchase, while the Dwight D. and Mamie Eisenhower set, released on May 12, is currently sold out. A Presidential Coin and First Spouse Medal Set honoring Lyndon and Claudia Taylor “Ladybird” Johnson is scheduled for release later this summer.

The Kennedy set is likely to generate a lot of interest. As noted by MNB, the Jacqueline Kennedy First Spouse Gold Coin has sold far better than its recent predecessors, with current sales figures totaling 12,008 across proof and uncirculated pieces.

Sellout from the opening bell – again. If not instant sellout then gone in 5 minutes.

Better be quick on this one. Flippers want to flip for$100 each.

Maybe it’s just me, but haven’t we gotten our fill of 2014-15 Kennedy coin and medal products from the Mint? Nothing like a little overkill–the products just keep coming. I believe the Kennedy C&C set is on deck, replete with the now overused reverse proof coin.

The Eisenhower spouse set is “Currently Unavailable”, not sold out, according to the Mint’s website.
I don’t understand why the 2014 spouse sets have been designated as “Sold Out” but the 2013 spouse sets remain forever in the limbo of “Currently Unavailable”. Are any of these going to be made again?

  7. Boz says

On back order already. Additional inventory will be minted and shipped to Memphis ASAP. Just kidding.

  8. Zaz says

The ’14 coin & medal sets were limited to 4,500 for the unpopular presidents (Harding, Coolidge & Hoover.) FDR & Eleanor were allotted a generous 7,000 sets. If history repeats itself, the Kennedys will start out with at least that many. A sure sellout because it’s a cheap souvenir of a popular first couple.

Ends in error, speaking of Kennedy looking, did you notice on the Mint’s home page that JFK is “eyeballing” Jackie. I mean, he is seriously “checking her out”. Maybe this is why they made his dollar different, it makes for a perfect set. Now if they only did a Marylin Monroe medal…

There are so many out there it’s hard to count…

  12. GoldFishin says

@MIKE T.- If you are talking about SmartPost…..at first you can track it on FedEx site until they deliver it to the USPS. After USPS takes delivery add two numbers at the beginning of the tracking number. Add 9 for the first digit and then try each digit 0-9 for the second number. All of my packages I add a 9,2 at the beginning and that is the tracking number for the Post Office, which is what I think you are talking about.

So try adding 92 at the beginning of the tracking number if that doesn’t work, try 90, 91, etc. One of them will work.

  13. Ends in Error says

Yeah this looks like a really good looking set – I might be needing 500 of these.

LOL …. Only kidding of course.

    Actually 100 would be plenty……..

Jackie looks really good in the illustration. Jack is right over her but in spite of his superior position he seems to be overly distracted by something else. I’ll bet you’re correct – it’s got to be the MM lady.

  18. Jerry Diekmann says

Yes, maybe TPTB will see to it that a special JFK coin is issued in 2017 marking the 100th anniversary of his birth. And let that be the end of the JFK reminders. The man has been dead now longer than he was alive. I mean no disrespect to JFK or JKO, but the 1000 days is long gone and the world has changed dramatically (some good, some bad) since that time. JFK would have a hard time understanding this country 52 years after his death if he ever came back to survey the scene. Doesn’t Congress and the Mint still have room for another 2017 commemorative?

  19. merryxmasmrscrooge says

  21. Stuart Bradley says

I actually like this spouse set series and have collected it from the start. But I have been frustrated at the Mint’s inconsistent policies. First there are no sales records for the 2008 sets. Second, they sold 15K Lincoln sets before declaring it sold out.
Yet they STILL offer sets going back to 2010 & Millard Fillmore (which has sold 10K), but they capped the 2014 Harding, Hoover & Coolidge sets at 4,500 and declared them sold out?

  22. sharks2th says

The MoD sets received from the 5/22 order have a few interesting items on them. All of the RP dimes have a shiny dot just above the head of Roosevelt. Obviously this is a flaw in the die. Some of the W regular proof dimes have a thin or disappearing D in the word God, similar to the 2003 proof cent variety. All of the dollar proofs have part of the D missing in the DE initials on the reverse. These look more like an LE than a DE.

These did not appear to be returned sets, but who knows. The box again had the crap beaten out of it with crinkles and dents in the sides. They also used the green air pillows again, but items were loose and had come open in the box due to a lot of free space for the items to move around. They must be using cheap boxes or else UPS is running all the boxes through a crush test.

  23. Mike in NY says

@sharks2th one of my 5 reverse proofs also has the dot above FDR’ s head. I received the order when the bulk of them were initially shipped.

  24. Jayarejr says

My reverse proof Roosevelt does not have a dot above the head. Uh oh, looks we have a “dot” and “no dot” variety here.

  25. mark says

Mine has 2 dots…I win. No just joking. But I am waiting for UPS coming today with my 30 sets. Will let you know how they look.

  26. Ends in Error says

Well looks like someone finally took the last Florence Harding Proof. And there are only 10 of the Grace Coolidge Proofs left. Looks like the 2014’s will be gone long before the 2013’s.

  27. Olde Sailor Bill says

Just some info about mint packing…
My 5 Truman’s arrived with one booklet floating free in box only a thin layer of green bubble mate on top of mint sets , also in this order was a couple Fighter Aces medal loose in the bottom. one was under flap ready to fly out, the box was not completely taped (seal ends ) box had a small /dent in top……the order made 6 UPS cities sorts before it arrived in Norfolk for 9hour local truck ride.

I reported the packing problem to the mint reps

  28. mark says

Mint reps …I mean customer service only take or cancel orders and look up your order. They could care less about what the other shipping company does. They know nothing.

  29. Brad says

    Ends in Error,

Yeah, I saw that too. It took quite a while for someone to finally buy that last Florence Harding! I was beginning to wonder if the Grace Coolidge would sell out first.

I expected the Helen Taft coins to be pulled off-sale when the Jacqueline Kennedy sales started, but that didn’t happen. When the Ida McKinley and remaining Edith Roosevelt coins were pulled a few weeks ago, I thought maybe it meant the Mint was sort of playing “catch-up” and were going to start pulling the 2013’s as the corresponding 2015’s went on sale. Since there were still McKinley and Roosevelt coins available to sell, now I don’t know why the Mint pulled them.

  32. cagcrisp says

@fmtransmitter, For MY smartpost, once it is handed off to USPS, I put a 92 in front of the Fedex smartpost numbers…

  33. Mark says

I never had to add any numbers..just enter same Fedex tracking number into USPS tracking. If nothing shows up it means its not at your local post office yet.

  34. Erik H says

Just received my C & C Sets. I placed one order of 5 but received 5 separate boxes!!! I know that USPS is broke but I don’t think that the Mint should be subsidizing the USPS by shipping out multiple boxes. Plus I only receive one tracking # so I would have been shocked if I opened the first box only to find one set!

On another note, the Reverse Proof Dollar is hot!!! I think that after the Pres. Dollars end that the mint should start minting all circulating coins (except the ATBs) for a period of 5 or 10 years as Reverse Proofs. It would be a nice change without changing the actual designs. If congress want to change a current design they can do it as a reverse proof until the determined time expires. JMO

Does anyone remember the topic of this thread? There actually were a few on topic comments in regard to the Kennedy coin and FS medal set before this thread turned into an annexation of the previous one. Commenters are still letting everyone know when they received their Truman C&C sets, as well as their Jackie FS gold.
Well folks, hang on. Tomorrow’s MNB topic will undoubtedly be the Mint’s release of the Blue Ridge Parkway 5 oz ATB. Fortunately, many of us will again have something to get excited about. Everyone seems to rave about the great design of this coin, the consensus being that it is, by far, the best 2015 ATB offering.

  38. VA Bob says

If the Mint wanted to really help the Post Office (and the customer), they’d use them for their base price shipping from the get go. I fail to see how this present method could somehow be cheaper or more efficient for all concerned. It would only take about three days by USPS truck from Memphis to Norfolk. I’ve done it myself in about 16 hours.

  39. GoldFishin says

@Hawkster- Yea, Kennedy and Kennedy…blah blah blah….more Kennedy. Next, we will have Kennedy coins commemorating the commemoration of Kennedy.
This thread was summarized in two posts….sell out in 5 minutes. Flip on ebay for $4 profit.
About the upcoming ATB Blue Ridge. I seriously doubt that the P Unc. version will be nearly as nice as the bullion. I received my bullion pucks today and the way the light plays on the mutant dogwood, as well as the highway and tunnels will Not translate the same way on the Unc. version. That is what I am telling myself anyway, since I can’t afford them at this time with the HR coming at the end of the month. 😉

  40. GoldFishin says

@Dusty- On your Blue Ridge bullion pucks, did you have a shiny area on the highway as you near the far tunnel? I looked at your photos and it was hard to tell. I was wondering if it was designed that way, or if the die has just been worn smooth in that area. I guess the area is about the size of a nickel. The rest of the highway has a texture that actually looks like an asphalt road would. Thanks in advance.

  41. Ends in Error says

I got my Jackie BU today. The Coin is beautiful , nothing at all like the Eunice Schriver Coin. I have a Proof Jackie on the way, also, something tells me I’ll like that one too.

  42. sharks2th says

@ Mike in NY – So it looks like there is a MoD RP obverse die which was used as part of the initial run with the shiny spot/dot over the head. It makes one wonder if these sets were returns or if they just used the old die to make the final run of RP dimes. The RPs are nearly perfect otherwise.

  43. Joseph says

How do you know? you work at the Mint?

Well looks like someone finally took the last Florence Harding Proof. And there are only 10 of the Grace Coolidge Proofs left. Looks like the 2014’s will be gone long before the 2013’s.

  44. GoldFishin says

@Sharkstooth- the shiny spot will not affect the grade of the coin since it is recurring and obviously part of the minting process as long as the eye appeal is not adversely affected. I had a similar effect in a different location near the rim about 7’oclock on the obverse on all five of my RP’s from one 5 set order. All five were graded PF70 by NGC. The Roosevelt RP image was immaculate on all of them, with no ticks or nicks. Reverse was the same.

  45. Dustyroads says

GoldFishin< Sorry I took so long getting back to you…yes, the highway does have a smooth place in it, which is easy to see as soon as you rotate it. I can't tell you if it was designed into the coin, but that's the way I'm taking it. I love it.

  46. Dustyroads says

GoldFishin, “Sorry I took so long getting back to you…”

I’m getting my days confused, I thought today was the 7th. Head is spinning lately.

  47. GoldFishin says

Thanks Dusty….I was really looking forward to seeing these Blue Ridge bullion coins after I saw the pics of yours. The highway effect as you rotate it was a really pleasant surprise. I really don’t know of another ATB that has these kind of effects with the 3D tunnel also. Fast becoming one of my favorites.

  48. says

GF – my two that arrived from APMEX this evening have that spot. If you’ve ever driven the Blue Ridge in the summer, the first thought that may come to mind is that it just rained as it looks like wet asphalt you’d expect to see with all the rain/fog.

I must say, the Blue Ridge BU is 1000% better than the past two and is quite spectacular for a BU puck, IMO. The mint really put forth considerable effort in the design of the die to make the coin ‘pop’ and the polishing for the dogwood, tunnel and stone really sets this one part. The dogwood petals have this pearl luster to them that make these tunneling dwelling dogwoods Ok in my book.

    Nice job Mint!

  49. VA Bob says

Ends in Error – haven’t you heard? Your Kennedy collection isn’t complete without Eunice. 😉

  50. GoldFishin says

@KCSO- “pearl luster” is a good way to describe the dogwood petals…I couldn’t really find the words for them, the finish really is quite different, they really are very nice even if they are MTDD’s(Mutant Tunnel Dwelling Dogwoods).
Yes, I agree with your description of the highway. Also reminds me of how asphalt can look shiny in the distance on a very hot day when it almost looks like a desert mirage resembling a body of water.
Agree..Nice Job Mint! Now cut out that crappy Dumppost!

  51. Clark says

Would someone please reprint all reader comments from the previous thread?

VaBob–My thoughts exactly about Eunice being part of the Kennedy series of coins. It’s not right to exclude her. With that said, I also would like to see designs for a Robert F. Kennedy gold coin because he was an integral component of Camelot.

  52. sharks2th says

@GF – Glad to hear the die spot would not affect the grade. I’d have to agree it shouldn’t since it is a perfect coin as far as matching the die which struck it. Additionally you may want to look at your Shenandoah P pucks. In my opinion the Shenandoah has at least 3 distinct types of surface on the finish. The water areas on it have a glossy texture. This is really pronounced on the regular quarter sized proofs and silver proofs. I may be mixing up the pucks and quarters since I don’t have examples to look at right now, but the Shenandoah does have multiple types of finish on it. It could be considered enhanced since it has more than two textures on the finish.

  53. GoldFishin says

@Clark- cant reprint them all for lack of space. But I can reprint the most important one. 🙂

  54. Tinto says

    @GoldFishin

Nice picture of the Blue Ridge ATB puck. I wasn’t thinking of getting one, now I’m not so sure …..

  55. sharks2th says

@GF – Take a look at the Shenandoah pucks and quarters if you get a chance. I remember noticing 3 distinct finishes on that one. The water puddle below the guy on the ledge has a different finish from the rest of the coin. I remember the multiple finishes first being on this coin because I’ve stood at that point on Old Rag Mountain.

It makes sense to use the laser to give different textures on the Parkway coins to make the differing elements pop on the coins.

  56. Tinto says

Really too bad the Mint did not decide to issue the P pucks in regular proof finish. That sand blasted finish really makes the puck look dull.

After reading additional comments on the Blue Ridge bullion puck I caved in and just ordered one from APMEX .

  57. GoldFishin says

@Tinto- you won’t regret your purchase. Let us know what you think when you receive it.

  58. Jerry Diekmann says

VA Bob – I guess my Kennedy collection will remain incomplete because I refuse to pay 1 cent for that horribly ugly Eunice Shriver coin, and she took credit for founding the Special Olympics, which I do not believe is totally accurate. Anyway, I don’t know who has more wrinkles – she or Jimmy Carter. I collect most commemorative coins, but I try and not buy ugly coins, and the Shriver coin has to be one of the ugliest in the modern series – the only uglier commemorative coin I can think of would have to be the Booker T. Washington – George Washington Carver coins of the early 1950s. Don’t have any of those either. No wonder the Treasury stopped minting commemorative coins after dealing with a four-year-run of these terrible looking coins.

  59. Dave SW FL says

  73. JohnT58 says

At what point does the mint reduce the price of the P pucks? They are selling out the bullion in record time but the P pucks languish at a price point that is 50% higher. Think that is maybe a clue that it is time to cut prices?

  75. Sith says

JohnT58 – Silver would have to stay below $15 for that to happen. This is based on the last price drop. The Mint is slow to drop prices but quick to raise them. IMHO it will not happen silver has initially dropped below $15 but it is again above $15.

  78. says

    Mark,
I agree. Usually the MNB postings are timely in relation to newsworthy events at the Mint, especially when popular, new offerings are released.

  79. Sith says

The mint just ran out of ASE blanks. It will resume sales in 2 weeks. I wonder if they did not anticipate demand 🙂 And as they just stopped allocation I wonder what the sales numbers are for today or did the mint just not have enough blanks in stock. I wonder what they need the inventory level to be in order to stop allocation? In either case expect the AP’s to raise premiums, so much for taking advantage of the low spot price. Then people wonder why I want the mint to sell its bullion directly to the public. The Mint screws up, and the only winners are the APs.

  80. Sith says

It was reported that the Mint sold 2 Million ASE Coins in Under 2 Hours!. If anyone wants Blue Ridge…

  81. Sith says

Sorry that looks to be a headline from 2014. You would think the Mint would have learned by now…

  82. Sith says

Last correction…The mint is out of blanks, and will not sell ASEs for two weeks . That is from today. The amount sold was from a 2014 headline. Just imagine if we had real demand, I say this because the silver spot price keeps dropping “as a stronger dollar tarnished the appeal of precious metals.”

  83. fmtransmitter says

  86. says

I missed the ball on the Mr. & Mrs. Kennedy sets. The Jackie medal looks to be about a .50 cent size. Mint says it will have more to ship Oct. 1, 2015. I would bet it will happen sooner. They sure sold out quick!! If Ag gets near 10 I would certainly consider pulling the trigger on a batch!! I think the rosy times (“strong dollar”) is temporary, somehow I see the dollar strong overseas, but a disaster here! Are there any plans to pay back our loans, does anybody know??
