Reagan Coin & Chronicles Sets: Ordering Begins at Noon

16pa_a

This post was updated on October 11 at 1:30 p.m. to make note of the Reverse Proof strikes for the Presidential dollars in the 2015 sets.

The Ronald Reagan Coin and Chronicles Set will be available to order on the Mint’s website today at noon. Each set contains:

  • one 2016-S Presidential Reverse Proof $1 coin (composition: .770 copper, .120 zinc, .070 manganese, .040 nickel; weight: 8.10 g; diameter: 26.49 mm),
  • one 2016-W one-ounce American Silver Eagle Proof coin (composition: 99.9% silver; weight 1 troy oz. / 31.103 g; diameter: 40.60 mm), and
  • one replica of the Congressional Gold Medal depicting President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan (minted in Philadelphia, no mintmark; composition: .95 copper, .5 zinc; diameter: 1.5 inches).

Each item in the set is enclosed in a clear capsule and housed in a blue, trifold folder with an informational booklet and a certificate of authenticity.

The Coin and Chronicles series was inaugurated in 2005 and has been issued intermittently since then. Although the underlying idea has remained constant, the designs and the items featured in the sets have varied, depending on the subject being honored and the Mint’s larger marketing plan. Previous sets in the series, and the items contained in them, are as follows:

2005, Chief Justice John Marshall—One Uncirculated 2005-P John Marshall commemorative silver dollar; a BEP intaglio portrait; and an informational booklet.

2006, Benjamin Franklin—One Uncirculated 2006-P Benjamin Franklin “Scientist” commemorative silver dollar; a replica of Poor Richard’s Almanack, 1798; a BEP intaglio print of The Signing of the Declaration of Independence; and a complete set of four 2006-issue 39-cent Benjamin Franklin 300th Anniversary postage stamps.

2007, 2008—None issued.

2009, Abraham Lincoln—Four Proof 2009-S Lincoln Bicentennial cents (one each of the Birth and Early Childhood reverse, Formative Years reverse, Professional Life reverse, and Presidency reverse); one 2009-P Proof Lincoln Bicentennial silver dollar; a replica of Lincoln’s handwritten Gettysburg Address; and a reproduction of a photograph of Lincoln.

2010–2012—None issued.

2013, Theodore Roosevelt—One Proof 2013-S Theodore Roosevelt Presidential dollar; a silver Theodore Roosevelt Presidential medal; a Bald Eagle bronze medal from the National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial series; a reproduction of a photograph of the president during his military days; and an informational booklet.

2014, Franklin D. Roosevelt—One Proof 2014-S Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential dollar; one Proof 2014-S Roosevelt dime; a silver Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential medal; a bronze Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential medal; four stamps originally issued in 1945 and 1946 (values 1, 2, 3, and 5 cents); and an informational booklet.

2015, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson—Four separate sets. Each contains one Reverse Proof 2015-S Presidential dollar representing the president being honored by the set, along with the related silver Presidential medal; and an information booklet. Each also contains one stamp printed during the respective president’s time in office: for Truman, an 8-cent stamp of 1973; Eisenhower, 6 cents, 1969; Kennedy, 5 cents, 1964; and Johnson, 8 cents 1973.

As with the Reagan sets, the Presidential dollars in the 2015 sets were produced in a Reverse Proof format. Normal Proofs, with mirrored fields and frosted devices, are still available separately; but in the Coin and Chronicles Sets, the finishes are reversed, with frosted fields and mirrored devices. The Reverse Proofs—and as a result, the sets—have been very popular with collectors.

The number of Ronald Reagan Coin and Chronicles Sets is limited to 150,000; the household order limit is 3. The sets are priced at $68.95 each. (Scroll down for a Getty Images slideshow of the president’s days in office.)

As a president, Reagan is remembered for—among other accomplishments, ideals, and events—his supply-side economic policies (“Reaganomics”); the appointment of the first female Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor; negotiations with the Soviet general secretary, Mikhail Gorbachev, to significantly reduce nuclear arms levels; an escalation of the war on drugs; and increases in the power of the chief executive. As a person, he is remembered for his warmth and sense of humor. He survived an assassination attempt and presided over the end of the Cold War, famously calling on Gorbachev to “tear this wall down.” In the waning days of his presidency, his staff worked increasingly hard to protect both the president and the nation as Reagan developed symptoms of what would be diagnosed in 1994 as Alzheimer’s disease. He died in 2004, at the age of 93.

  1. johnaz says

no without the silver medal it is doom. The only thing in the set is the pres. dollar that coll will what.at 150,000 to many.

  2. Brad says

I’ll not be buying one of these from the Mint. I may pick one up later when they’re going for $50 or less on the secondary market. I would like to have the reverse proof dollar, but without a unique silver eagle I’m definitely not interested at $68.95 plus $4.95 s/h. This was a big lost opportunity for the Mint to give us something special, but they took the lazy path and used the same old eagle we can get elsewhere.

  3. earthling says

Show your support for the people of the US Mint. Get your order in during the small stampede at 12 PM Eastern. This is going to be abundant fun for all.

Back up the Truck and get your 3 sets today. In a weak , after the HHL is lifted, get another couple hundred sets. The Mint will be very pleased with you.

  4. RSF says

Your post fails to mention the key reason for the popularity of this product since 2015 – the uniqueness of the dollar coins. This has made these sets a must-have for both the presidential dollar series collectors (the keys) as well as those of us building full sets of the 14 reverse proof coin series.
It’s obviously also a must have for those collecting the Coin and Chronicles sets as a series.

  5. Brad says

The collector base for the reverse proof dollars must be pretty small. How else would prices on the Eisenhower C & C keep falling when so many sets were held by CarsonandMegansMom? Less than 17,000 in existence and they still aren’t flying off the shelves. Last time I checked, they were having a hard time now selling them for the $85 each. Despite Reagan’s popularity, 150,000 sets is WAY too many.

  6. The Real "Cool" Brad says

Ordered my three. Will be popping out the reverse proof Ronnies and using them at Walmart where they belong.

  7. AZ Dan says

Perhaps you’re right (there does not appear to be a stampede). I was able to get my order in under a minute USM04556XXX

  8. Old Big Bird says

I just got my order through for 3 C&C sets. It went through so quick this time. Is anyone ordering them?
order# USM045564XX I can not belief it went through that fast

  9. Tinto says

Getting my set today and that will complete my Prez C&C collection. Too bad the Mint didn’t include the silver medal like the others. I don’t really care for the proof ASE.

  10. MarkInFlorida says

RSF is right, it should be noted that the 2015 sets are not just proof dollars, they are the only reverse-proof dollars made.

  11. says

3 sets for me. In and out in under a minute. Too easy. Where are all the Reagan people? I thought this would be a stampede. I expected a full blown mint site slowdown or shut down.

  12. Bill G. says

I ordered one set from the mint, just to continue my collection of the coin and chronicle sets. I will order an NGC 69 set off the bay to complete my graded set. I would normally send in my set to NGC myself, but with the requirement of sending in the mint sealed package, I don’t want to risk not getting back the OGP.

With the 150,000 mintage, flippers will stay away. I think a mintage of 50,000 would have been more likely to sell out quickly. I bet they don’t even sell 25,000 on day 1 and might not even hit 50,000 until 2017. If they would have done the silver medal instead of the ASE, I would have bought 2 or 3 sets. I really like the silver medals from 2015.

  13. JBK says

Could be a sleeper – if no one is buying because of the high mintage, then the end of year sales may be more in range with the JFK set, for example.

Remember the BHOF coins: the half dollars had such a high authorized mintage that no one paid attention to them, but by the time they went off sale they had only sold about the same amount as the silver dollar which had sold out quickly.

  14. achmed says

For someone who orders from Germany I would have to pay about 189 Dollars for two of the sets (137,90 plus 17,90 shipping plus 2*2,95 handling costs – whatever the usmint takes that money for? – plus 1% charge for use of creditcard plus 7% VAT in Germany plus about 14 Dollars that UPS charges). not for me!!!
I will probably sell my 2 sets with Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson and Kennedy, If anybody is interested.

  15. I started collecting yesterday says

I played the game last year and was able to get 2 of each, but this one I think I’m going to pass on. The presidential medals were the only reason I was collecting these items. Whatever the uniqueness the Reagan one has does not replace the awesomeness of the presidential medals. Happy collecting!

  16. Mint News Blog says

Good catch, RSF (and @MarkInFlorida). I’ll update the post to accurately report the Reverse Proof finish.

  17. So Krates says

@ Bill G. – I would not let the worry about the return of OGP from NGC stop you from sending your sets in. As long as you check off the appropriate box on the submission form it should be returned with your coins.

  18. Bill G. says

So Krates, I had problems last year with the coin and currency sets I sent in. I only received one of the four OGP’s back. Anyway, I believe that the cost to have them graded will be too high compared to their worth. I would rather pay for the graded 69 set on the bay. It is usually cheaper then sending in the coins myself. Sure, I will forgo the chance at a 70, but whenever I get 70’s they tend to be common and still not worth very much. I have a bad feeling that these sets will not hold their value. If Johnaz is right and they can’t sell them in 2017, I could be making a mistake. We shall see.

  19. So Krates says

Got locked out of my account because I used my old password, so… I had to call to place my order. After completed, I asked the CSR if she had heard anything about any gold dimes hanging around. She thought I said CLOWNS. haha. What the hell is wrong with people today? When rumors of a few creepy clowns can cause mass hysteria, it’s not surprising that many folks can be so easily scared into giving up their liberties.

  20. Fmtransmitter says

I like the Reagan medal. A silver medal easily could have been done to keep it in traditional aspects but they figured they threw 17k of us a bone w the other stunner medal that they would just toss an ASE in there. It does make sense tho because he was the one who signed into legislation the silver eagle act. Too bad it doesn’t say something on the edge to differentiate it from all the other silver eagles. Maybe it won’t say 30th anniversary on the edge. NOT!

  21. earthling says

If the Mint still has any next Thanksgiving ( Nov 2017) I might order 1. But only if the give me a free US Mint Bag with a Turkey on it.

  22. KCSO says

1st hours orders are approximately 8,000,

Therefore 12,000 to 16,000 sets have likely been sold,

Probably a very disappointing day for our mint breathren.

  23. So Krates says

@ Bill G. – I believe the Mint has chosen to interpret the law (incorrectly IMO) as permitting the sale into next year.

Did you ask what happened to the other three OGP? Did they make an adjustment or offer free submissions? That sucks!

I’m guessing you know you can send in the coins without the boxes and still get grades and Early Release labels. I assume the only reason that it would required to be sealed is the Coin and Chronicles designation on the ASE ?

  24. KCSO says

There would be some degree of ironic humor to it if first weekend sales ended up around 17,000.., in line with the Truman & Ike cited mintages.., just a thought.

  25. asherspapa says

Almost forgot about the Reagan C&C today and went on at 2:15 a bit worried (forgot the high mintage), but no problem. In and out in less than 30 seconds for a single set–USM045647xx
Still upset about the ASE instead of a Reagan Silver Medal–seems like a political snub. The price is a rip-off and they didn’t publish the W-ASE until AFTER the ASE went on sale. But I’ll give the ASE to my grandson and keep the RP and the Ronnie/Nancy medal.

  26. Old Big Bird says

I wonder how long it will take Mike Mizack of HSN to have PR70 of the Reagan C&C up for sale 3 to 4 days?

And how many will he have 500 at PR70? But does get 3 at a time like the rest of us?

Does he get them shipped in one day and certified in one day so he can sell them in 3 to 4 days?

  27. earthling says

Any word on the BU Roosevelt ATB Puck sales yet?

I’ll guess 6,000 Thursday – Sunday. Probably see an info blackout until numbers hit a high level.

I am just glad to get a set to complete the collection of RP Presidential dollars. I think they are one of the best things the mint has done. Yes, it would have been better with the silver medal. Those medals really look great.

  35. a Bob says

KC&SO, that medal was not produced by the mint. But more one ounce medals are needed.
I think they will be selling this set until Christmas 2017.

  36. The Kid says

I ordered two sets and I am not even a Republican.

Need some help here , looking for some insight into the production of the Tributes…

Coin World has cited that Tributes are struck on a Gräbener press and has shown an associated video of the SLQ production…

Does anyone have any insight if the mint has one or two of these Gräbener presses being utilized in striking of the Tributes? And does the W mint typically work a standard 8 hour work day or dual shift?

    Thanks!

  40. Hawkster says

As with the TR “P” puck, which went on sale this past Thursday, this Reagan C&C set seems to have had a lukewarm opening ordering day. No problem ordering during the opening minutes for either product. The TR puck is surely yesterday’s news, as I’m not aware of any commenters on this Blog posting the shipping status of their orders, or how the puck looks if they have it in hand.

  41. Asherspapa says

Now that the release date of the Limited Edition Silver Proof Set has been set, is there any information about its contents? Will it just be a re-packaging of coins already available (and just another way to separate collectors from their money), or might there be anything unique?

  42. Just Another Dave In Pa says

I don’t post here that often but I thought I’d chime in on the TR pucks. I received 2 of the TR P pucks today and I’m very impressed. Flawless, imo. There seems to be a really nice 3D effect on this one that I haven’t noticed in any others. It’s majestic!

I also ordered 3 of the Reagan C&C sets and I hope the Presidential series is now complete.

  43. Dustyroads says

I didn’t want to detract from the Reagan C&C set topic, but I did get to see another 5 oz. bullion today in addition to the two “P” pucks ordered from the Mint. I’m absolutely pleased with them. The subject content still impresses me, and there’s no problem with the quality. Happy, happy, happy!

  44. DBR says

If the mint really does on occasion mint to demand, up to the limits, then I could see the Reagan C&C set qualifying for that. I’d say the coins and medals are the easy part to control. On the other hand, would they order and produce 150,000 holders for the set? I wonder. Maybe one half of mintage limit or 75K sets pre-made for launch date.

These C&C sets are meant to be enjoyed, read the history and have all the elements of the set come together and showcase the artistry of printing, engraving, and minting.

I promise I don’t work for the mint! Lol I just love these sets. My dad was a U.S. History teacher so he tried to convey to me how important the office of the presidency used to be.

Personally I’d like to see other statesmen and jurists honored with sets (like Franklin and Marshall were). I would recommend a C&C Set for Henry Clay, Thurgood Marshall, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, John C. Calhoun, Frederick Douglass, and I could go on and on. There are a lot of great men and women of our past who shouldn’t be in such obscurity today just because they weren’t president.

  45. Hidalgo says

I ordered one of the Reagan Coin & Chronicles Sets yesterday evening. No problem placing an order. When I receive it, I will have one of each Coin and Chronicles sets, dating back to the first one — honoring John Marshall in 2005.

    2005 John Marshall
    2006 Benjamin Franklin

    2015 Harry S. Truman

I have bought all of the P pucks and most of the bullion pucks since they I started collecting in late 2012. I have only bought one greedy going and that was the Hawaii going because it is my favorite design so for in MS 69 DMPL . I think I would a election of these graded SP 70. is it normally cheaper to buy these when they first come out or to wait a few months or years? I know there are a few exceptions to the normal room but in most cases when is the best time?

  49. Mark Rex says

I also wanted to say that the 16,190 opening numbers for the TR P puck were surprisingly very low. Either a very good thing for ferry bad thing depending on your viewpointI may have her order me quite a few more. Since the mint knew sub numbers in advance I stand by my original prediction only 22k max being minted and would actually reduce that to 18 to 20k like Shawnee and the rest from this year. Could be very rewarding to pick up another P puck and or bouillon puck.

  50. a Bob says

The medal shown in the links above is the medal I expected to see in this set. I’m a little disappointed by the medal chosen and a lot disappointed that it is bronze.
Still waiting to see if it is antiqued like the FDR bronze.
No reason the Mint cannot continue to offer the presidential medals in one ounce silver. There seems to always be a lack of silver product offered at the bed inning of the year.

  51. Mark Rex says

By having an eBay store your final value fees are lowered to 6%I believe in the coin and money category.

Does Anyone really think that a Mintage of 100,000 was too High?
Does Anyone really think that with a Mintage of 100,000 with a HHL of 10 that these would Not have Sold out Launch Day?
Does Anyone really think without the HHL being lifted that Total sales would still be in the low 60’s?
Does Anyone really think there will be Another 21,536 Sold Before Launch of WLH?
Does Anyone really think there will be Another 21,536 Sold Ever?
Does Anyone really think the Mint will make the same mistake again with a HHL of 1?…

  55. data dave says

@cagcrisp – I think sales might reach 85K but will not hit 100k. I think the Mint will make the same mistake and hence my guess of 80K/1 for the Gold Walker. I also think that 100K/10 would be great for both the SLQ and the WH.

  56. HarryB says

@cag: sadly, the SLQ tribute will not be a sellout, the Mint blew the launch with a HHL of one as you have stated numerous times since opening sales. The only exception would be if the PM market really took off there were no other gold coins aviliable in the marketplace. The Mint really needs a market analyst, if they were smart they would hire you, Not being flippant .

  57. Old Big Bird says

@cagcrisp – I was just posting into my spreadsheet the sales numbers from the mint and came up with the same minus 903 SLQ between 10/02 and 10/09. Gee do you think HSN-CSN guy made a pile of returns that could not equal PS70? What is your opinion. That seems to be a large number of returns.

@Old Big Bird, That’s actually pretty common for Offerings that have a large percentage that are Graded. It may have taken Longer than normal for the returns to show up because the Big Boys/Dealers were shut out early/ Launch Day because of the HHL of 1.

The Big Boys/Dealers never really got in until 09/21/16 at noon when the Mint turned off the HHL of 1 sign…

  59. Old Big Bird says

@cagcrisp, I am not to sure about the big boys getting in after 09/21/16. The reason being the SLQ with a HHL of 1 went on sale 09/08/16. The one I ordered came in on 09/14/16. Our Big Boy/Dealer Mike Mizack already had 477 PS70 on sale on 09/14/16. So some how he must have gotten his hands on let say 1,000 to 1,500 in order to get 477 SP70 to sell. I know because I saw this on HSN personally. Therefore, either he has an in with the mint and get his load early so he can get them certified or he has thousands of people ordering 1 at a time. But having thousand of people ordering them would not have gotten that many in his hands fast enough. So that only leaves him getting advance option on a large bunch regardless of the HHL to us small collectors. These are the plain facts in this matter. And he would not sit on anything that was not SP70 and he would return them.

  60. Old Big Bird says

Did anyone else see his sale on HSN of the SQL within less than one week form the sale date?

  61. Old Big Bird says

@cagcrisp, As a matter of fact if you go onto http://www.hsn.com he still has some of the SP70 on sale for $995.00 first day of issue, and this is what I saw even before I had mine delivered.

  62. cagcrisp says

The market for Winged Head Liberty dimes in 70 has continued to strengthen since the daily flood of graded 70s quit hitting the market.

One specific Big Boy that Currently has sold 286 Graded PCGS 70 has raised price from $249.00 to $275.00. Has only sold 3 @ the $275.00 level but it’s a start.

Another Big Boy never cut prices below $279.99, however, he has only sold 56 items.

On Average PCGS 70s have increase $12-$15 since the flood stopped…

  63. cagcrisp says

The market for the SLQ has continue to deteriorate since my friend exited the Winged Head Liberty Market and entered the SLQ market.

I had Hoped that the floor for the 70 SLQ would approximate the percentage floor for the Winged Head Liberty.

In other words I Hoped $575.00 would hold… on Average….It has NOT.

This morning we had Sales of Low to Mid $550’s. With shipping that’s Just 12-13% above Cost.

Put that in a Business Plan and see how it works out with another 21,000+ coins available…

    TR “P” puck
Got mine and it looks great. With a 10x loop almost got scared of heights looking off the mountain. The size tells it all.
If the ASE in CC set is different let us know. I got my fingers crossed for POS ‘A’ and POS ‘B’ that would set the two coins (ASE small blue box and ASE in CC set) apart from each other.

  65. Erik H says

I should have received my TR puck yesterday but UPS sent it back to Memphis because they don’t deliver to PO Boxes. This is the second time recently that the Mint’s fulfillment center has done this to me. No wonder their products cost so much, they have to make up the $$ loss somewhere right?

  66. ...John Q. Coinage says

I agree with those saying US Mint issue fatigue has set in, this set with 150K can be ordered all year, it will likely never sell out, way 2 many. The bronze medal should be silver, & skip the ASE, decent deal based on ASE co$t alone, but no need to ruch, heck they finally lowered the SLQ down! God bless their little scheming minds…..& INABILITY to read a market………..we’ll see…..

  67. Goat says

Increase price of SLQ could be because of the pullback in gold price. People who do not follow prices all the time pay today’s price thinking it cheap due too gold on the bullion market being cheaper Some of the bullion silver I follow is bringing as much/ oz. now than it did when it was $19 +/ oz. . I was wanting to buy but the cost did not follow the price. I will wait, we have a few weeks of bearish left before the bull throws his head again.

  68. Hawkster says

The last two “P” pucks I purchased, which includes the TR, do not have a consistent width on the raised rim around the perimeter on the reverse side of the coin. The TR has a thinner (actually, very skinny) rim width on one side of the reverse ( Roosevelt) as compared to a wider rim width around the other side of the reverse. The obverse ( Washington) does have a consistent rim width around the entire perimeter.
Has anyone else observed this on their pucks?

  69. Dustyroads says

The Mint does seem to work in hindsight, therefore I think there’s a good chance that we will see something above a HHL of 0 for the WLH. I don’t see the Mint very being interested in doing repeats, unless it’s bread and butter or Commemorative sales.
In my opinion, they will shake it up.

I have a PO box too and I had the same problem will all UPS deliveries there .. finally my Post Office set up their physical address so people like myself could use it. But your comment just got me thinking as to why does the US Mint still automatically use UPS to ship to a PO box (since they should know by now that UPS doesn’t ship there) and secondly why does UPS accept it fully knowing that they don’t deliver to a PO box? A waste of money and lack of simple control .. (but who in the Mint is counting since they can , like you said make up their “$$ loss somewhere”

  71. says

Has anyone rececenyy changed their Mind recently on the WLH. I original said 60,000/HHL 1.

Now I think the mintage will be 100,000, HHL of one….the HHL limit will change like the SLQ, but will not sell out

  72. Erik H says

Tinto, you’re correct UPS will deliver to the PO when using a physical address and I have used this method in the past. However, generally when I order from the mint I just use the standard POB number. The mint’s stupid outside contractor who’s been in control of things for almost 2 years can’t get the website correct, can’t mail out packages correctly & has generally poor customer service. All paid for on the backs of us collectors.

    No,

    DONE.Dot.Com..,

    Like those P Pucks, Done.Dot.Com..,

Mint leadership is soooooo out of step with its base, ..simply has no clue.

Though, now I’d be eating those words if those ASE pups show enhanced or with an ‘S’.., but that’s not gonna happen.., that would require a Clue and Passion.., for the base

  74. earthling says

    21,511 ! 👍

Looks like these will still be on site in November 2017. If the Mint will include a free Bag with my order – I’ll be getting one.

  75. Gary Not Dave says

    @KCSO
or at least a Reverse Proof Silver Eagle…..just something to tie it to the CC set.

    C’mon man!

  76. Brad says

    KCSO,

Funny you should say that! The possibility of the ASE in the Reagan C & C set being unique after all HAD occurred to me too. I’ll be watching the reports here to see if anyone says something along the lines of their ASE in the set was an “S” Mint or something. If that happens ,the remaining sets would disappear in a heartbeat. While 150,000 is still a fairly large mintage for an ASE, it would still be worth it at that price point.

Considering what we were supposed to be getting from the description, the dismal sales don’t surprise me in the slightest. The Mint dropped the ball on this set (again.)

Deviating a bit from topic here, I’m wondering if “carsonandmegansmom” will EVER run out of Eisenhower C & C sets? Cag, have you happened to keep track of how many sets they’ve sold over all the different prices they’ve been charging the past few months? They sold them for $115, $85, $95, back to $85 and now $90 since I’ve been paying attention. I never tried to count how many they’ve sold though. It must be 200 or more sets by now!

  77. A different Jeff says

21,511 is more than either the Truman or Eisenhower sets (don’t confuse the issue with facts like the authorized limit is 150,000), and would have been a sellout and probably incurred much wrath had the limit be as low.

One thing to bear in mind is the restriction on sales for products including the ASE. While the 150,000 limit may not be achieved, it will be withdrawn from sale by December 31, which may yield a significantly lower number, perhaps lower than the Kennedy set. 10 weeks and counting.

  78. cagcrisp says

@A different Jeff, I don’t know where you are getting ” While the 150,000 limit may not be achieved, it will be withdrawn from sale by December 31″

Several times it has been reported on this blog that the Michael White from the Mint has stated that the 2016 ASE will be sold in 2017.

I see no reason that the Mint will just arbitrarily pull the Reagan C&C at year end…

  79. A different Jeff says

    @cag- You’re right.

I was basing that on earlier interpretations that the ASE was going to available only during 2016. As it stands with this report (i have been away a lot and not been active on the blog, so hadn’t seen that report), you are indeed correct that it will be around for a loooong time, potentially. I still don’t see 150,000 demand for this, though, and suspect it will be quietly withdrawn sometime mid-2017.

For a projection, for the first week let’s add 10,000 units, and for the balance of the first month, how about another 10,000 units (roughly a third of the first week’s sales). Through the end of the year add another 4,500 units. This is roughly 46,000 units.

For the next year (all of 2017) I will forecast 100 units per week on average. Add 5,200 units. Ten weeks into 2018 the product will be withdrawn after selling an average of 40 units per week. Total of 51,600 units.

With no data points, where am I getting these ‘guesses’? I am looking at the sales figures for the 4 coin Kennedy set. It has similar characteristics – items only available in the set, reasonably comparable price points,
similar costs for PM vs. price (1 oz (ASE) vs 1.5 oz (4 half dollars).

Because the numbers will be so bad, and because the ASE is available separately, I think the mint will not wait until 2018 to pull it. If the ASE was only available during 2016, the numbers would probably be higher, but still not 150,000

  80. earthling says

I read somewhere that plain jane bullion SAE’S are now going for $20.00 ? And this Reagan set is selling for $68.95 ?

Plainly I’d think a person would be better off with 3 SAE’S over 1 Reagan set. More compact and more Silver.

  81. A different Jeff says

The ASE in the Reagan set is the 30th anniversary version with edge lettering, rather than the plain-jane version bullion issue which has reeded edges. And if you are strictly looking for silver, you’re right. The proof collector version is $54; the uncirculated collector version will be $4 or $5 less.

Having said that, the question here is how many proof ASE collectors out there will also buy a product that has a $15 base metal reverse proof dollar coin and a small bronze medal. I don’t think that will turn out to be a large number.

What is more likely is that collector version ASE collectors will opt to buy a bullion version if they haven’t done so in the past, simply because of the edge lettering vs reeded edge. Again, I don’t think this will be a large number, either.
