Theodore Roosevelt National Park Three-Coin Set on Sale October 3

16ag_a

This report was edited on October 3 at 10:20 a.m. to remove the misleading description “Uncirculated sets.” One of the three coins in each set is, of course, a Proof strike from the San Francisco Mint. Mint News Blog apologizes for any confusion.

As of noon (Eastern time) on October 3, the U.S. Mint will be accepting orders for the 2016 America the Beautiful three-coin set featuring the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Each set will contain one coin each from the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints, along with a certificate of authenticity.

The quarter honoring the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota is the 34th coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, and the fourth program release in 2016. The reverse design is one of the handsomest to date, depicting Roosevelt on horseback overlooking the Little Missouri River.

To date, the Mint has sold 36,528 of this year’s sets, featuring Shawnee National Forest, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, and Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park. Nearly 494,000 of the sets have been sold since the program’s inception. The biggest seller so far is 2010’s Yellowstone National Park—probably the most famous national park in the country, with the exception of Yosemite—at 24,483 three-coin sets. The weakest (excluding this year’s releases): last year’s Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, at 12,939 sets—perhaps reflecting the fact that Bombay Hook is one of the least familiar parks on the list.

This is one of the few designs that I’ll pay extra for the “P” puck. This is also the first puck design that I’ll get two. Thank you US Mint.

  2. says

Again, I’m surprised by the lackluster bullion TR sells. So I too have changed my mind about the urgency of buying the P puck….I don’t think it to will sell out….maybe 22,500-25,000 at best….and a few months ago I thought this would be one of those “gotta buy in the first 10 minutes”…but not anymore.

What are your thoughts on this issue?

  3. cagcrisp says

@Goat, I think the Seller is in business with the Third Party Grader. Mutual benefit for both. Buy, Grade, Sell and If necessary Return. All about trying to Increase market share…

  4. Jeff says

Well boys gl with the new sheriff. Hopefully for you Diana will be more accessible and engaging than brother Dan. My suggestion Diana keep them boys feed . Don’t leave topics for days and days. Keep it relevant especially when you can obtain U.S. Mint inside information, these guys need to know what the mint is thinking and what’s there next move. If you can anyway get this type of info you’ll be golden. Oh these collector are pissed the mint took down the spread sheet for past offerings I would work on that first. GL if you choose to take this mission, this tape will self destruct in two days.

  5. data dave says

@Diana – Welcome! The more data the better. During popular releases cagcrisp tries to calculate sales by 15 minute intervals. I think numbers and coins go together and always have.

When I first found this blog I couldn’t believe people could spend so much of their time talking about coins, but it is true.

  6. bigguy says

sorry to beat this drum on this subject ,Great collections selling SL gold SP 70 $575.00, people on ebay already paying over $600 with a couple of days left. I will never understand, i like to do alot of looking around before i part with my hard earned money.

  7. Erik H says

    Throckmorton,

My 5 ASE don’t have any lines as you described. I have one with a small milk spot on the obverse. I will sell or return it.

I always buy 5 then cherry pick 2.

  8. merryxmasmrscrooge says

Old Rough and Ready. Reckon I’ll pick up a few of these sets. Will give them to my grandchildren but my children haven’t even been born yet.

  9. merryxmasmrscrooge says

Jeepers creepers, the Rough and Ready pucks will probably be sold out in a headbreadth. Better get on it right away.

  10. Mint News Blog says

data dave, I couldn’t agree more — I find the comment threads on this blog in particular to be fascinating. Between the content of the posts and the devotedness of the commenters, I’m glad to be back in the numismatic-editing arena! — Diana

  11. oldfolkie says

I want no part of one design on the quarter; mint marks no longer mean anything, collecting from change is meaningless. Until the state quarters came out my collection hadn’t been touched for 25 years. I hope they bring out a second set of ATBs and concentrate on the real National Parks that got skipped the first time around. It would be nice to see coinage in denominations we actually need as well.

  12. Teach says

The ATBs designs need to concentrate more on the actual park scenery and less on the people associated with the park.

  13. Hawkster says

I would generally agree with Teach’s above comment–except in the case of the TR quarter, which is the way everyone refers to this coin.

  14. Goat says

To get more info.I bought a PCGS MS 70 grade coin and the rim is nicked in many places on the reverse. I know the high/low points of this coin and it does have a strong strike. I have looked at 1000’s of this type of coin and still trying to figure out the difference between 69 and 70 grade before I try the “have them graded game”. I have only had a few coins graded ever and that was last year, I posted the results here I think.

Nobody said this was going to be easy.

  15. earthling says

I’m not really concerned about the TR Puck at all right now – which means it will be cut short by the Mint and be selling for big bucks soon.😉 But at least if that would happen, I could stop kicking myself about the Hawaiian Puck.

Welcome to the MNB – Diana. Good luck Dan with your future plans. My God Man, seems like we hardly knew ye.

  16. Teach says

@ Hawkster – I have no real issue with TR being in the ATBs design because if it wasn’t for him there would not be as many ATBs to appreciate if you know what I mean. A person in an occasional design is OK, but they seem to take over the design on many of the ATBs. It would just be nice to see more landscape and less human.

  17. Gary Not Dave says

The lack luster sales of the TR bullion coin has to do with mintage..too many of anything squashes any potential!
With the 30k mintage of the TR “P” puck…I still think there is some potential for this one. And potential I mean, holds it value or an increase in value.

  18. Hawkster says

Again, Teach, I agree with you in regard to the use or, more accurately, the overuse of people on the ATB quarter. Another exception, though, in addition to the TR image being entirely appropriate, is having the immigrant family depicted on the 2017 Ellis Island ATB quarter. Immigrants, after all, defined what Ellis Island was all about.

  19. Hawkster says

One thing, however, that puzzles me in regard to the approved Ellis Island design is the small U.S. flag being held by the little immigrant boy while he and his parents wait to be ferried to the mainland. Where did he get the flag? Did he make a quick detour to the souvenir shop? Did he snatch it out of the ground from a memorial garden display? One can only speculate.

  20. Dustyroads says

Louis, Per your article at CW, I personally feel there’s plenty of time left for a special announcement about a grand 30th. I haven’t yet felt disgruntled in any way. In fact, I feel fairly positive about it. If nothing were to be done, then I think I would remember this year as the year the Mint dropped the big one!

  21. VA Bob says

Hawkster it really doesn’t matter as long as they don’t show the disturbing, more modern practice of stomping, or burning the flag while waving their “former” national flag.

  22. Mark Rex says

As I stated in the previous thread I think the mintage of the bullion 5 oz pucks is simply a matter of available blanks the US Mint has. 29.5k for TR is a good thing I think. I think although 30k of the TR P can be minted that only about 22-23k will be. I think both the bullion (if sales remain at 30k-ish) and the P (if mintage is up to 25k – the lower the better) value will rise quickly and match Hawaii within a year or two. Bold prediction that I’m betting on.

Anyone know where I can find the total mintages for the FS Bronze Medal Sets?

  23. Dustyroads says

Hawkster…Crazy kids! I’m pretty sure it would have been possible for someone to hand it to him as they disembarked the ship.
I have the pocket watch my great Grandmother was wearing in her belt when she stepped off her boat. Incidentally, the ship couldn’t land at Ellis because of a Typhoid outbreak, and had to travel all the way to Galveston, TX.

  24. NcCoinCollector says

I agree it would be nice to see original quarter with Eagle in 5oz. I would also like to see Kennedy half dollar in that size.
The Roosevelt quarter is well done.

  25. Barry says

Are APMEX Employees prohibited from engaging in the side business of selling coins on their own? Does anyone know?

  27. So Krates says

FIRE ! FIRE ! Not really, Barry

Similar to the Sweden article posted here the other day, the facts are not quite as troublesome as the headline would lead one to believe. The only Cajun transactions prohibited from being completed with cash are ones involving second hand dealers buying copper, copper-aluminum A/C coils, and precious metals. Coin dealers and pawn shops are exempt.

    https://www.lawserver.com/law/state/louisiana/la-laws/louisiana_revised_statutes_37-1864-3

Don’t believe everything you read on the interweb.

  28. gatortreke says

@ Barry: Louisiana may have repealed banning cash transactions but the idea is alive and well on the national and international level. Sweden is at the forefront but I believe it is an idea the industrial world elites would like to implement everywhere, spelled out directly in Ken Rogoff’s book “The Curse of Cash”. In it he claims the big problem with paper currency is that a large part of it is used to facilitate tax evasion and a huge spectrum of criminal activities, including drugs, corruption, human trafficking, etc. Cash is suddenly evil, a facilitator only of crime and criminal activities (such as garage sales). Let’s be real, the reason governments everywhere are after every penny of your money they deem legally theirs is the huge, unsustainable debts built up by most of the industrial world. The government needs every dime, euro, yen, etc…. legally due them to feed their Jabba the Hut’s.

There is also the issue of unfunded retirement liabilities at all levels of government, further challenging the financials of many governments and their ability to pay their legal debts. Just look at Chicago and their issues paying their school systems retirement obligations and you’ll see that the insatiable demand for your money will only grow in the years ahead.

Last but not least, plans to institute NIRP (negative interest rates) require a cashless or near cashless society, otherwise sane folk everywhere will just withdraw cash from the system and put it under their mattresses, both figuratively and literally, foregoing credit transactions altogether. See Japan as evidence #1. To paraphrase Aldous Huxley, it is a Strange New World we live in.

Louis says, SEPTEMBER 28, 2016 AT 2:45 PM – Are many of you getting the Teddy R P puck with an enrollment? I did one but am considering cancelling. I don’t see a sellout on day 1 if at all.

Yep, 5 Enrollments equating to Dan Fout’s #, as a collector, a gift giver, & a speculator.., this one is a no brainer. Phebe Hemphill did a phenomenal job on this work of art.., not to mention the reverse pistol grip being used in a moment of reflection across the snake river plain is just Bad Ass. Yeah, I just love the design and if Volcanoes didn’t sell for $289, and sale a low Mintage.., it couldn’t hold a candle to the TR design. Do I anticipate an early SO? Frankly, I really don’t care for reasons already cited, though it’ll certainly get interesting if less than 23k are struck. Mark Rex, I’m with you.., for obvious reasons.., besides, all I need is $25 spot in the next few years and there is no risk. Love the design.., can’t think of a better one that symbolizes America the Beautiful and its Founding Father…

  30. Louis says

KSCO- As I have said in our correspondence, I am sure it will be a key issue but not clear whether or not it will be the sell-out many predicted (which is what you asked about).. I still expect it to retain a premium based on popularity. Also, the design is by Joel Iskowitz. Phoebe did the engraving of Joel’s designs. Normally it is the coin designer that deserves the greater recognition.

  31. Louis says

@Dusty- I noted that in 2011 the 25th anniv. set was issued on Oct., but keep in mind the Mint had already notified us the set was coming long before then, and the 20th set came in Aug and was also known well before that. Yes, that could still do something, but it would not be in their interest to wait until really late in the year and just spring it on us. Other mints announce these things well in advance so there is time to build up interest, and our mint would do well to do the same. We will see.

  32. Felson says

I missed the ATB question… I am in for a couple in the enrollment program. I already have a few of the bullion and think it is a great design as well. (Louis is right, Joel Iskowitz has become one of the better designers of late)

I also don’t care about an anniversary ASE, especially if it involves the edge lettering. That has to have been the dumbest move the mint has been directed to make in a couple of years. I speculate that based on the time it took the mint to produce the proof coins, they have little interest in making more of the 2016 coin than they have too.

  33. says

Lou, WRT..Normally it is the coin designer that deserves the greater recognition.

Roger, none-the-less, it’s a Winner for the Ages and I’m glad they made it work out…, it’s the capstone puck I’m my opinion and so appropriately done commensurate with the NPS Centennial.
I’ll be eating low-cal popcorn in lieu of Animal Crackers & another A River Runs Through It design.., actually, buying 14 TR Pucks is easily to justify when one reviews ’17-’18 puck designs which I’ll be passing on, with the exception of the Jolly Rodgers coin.

That baby sea turtle design for ’17 would have been a BIG, BIG hit among the Gen Pop (general populace), though the CFA/CCAC had to screw that up.

After the TR release.., we will have hit the high water mark among these pucks.

I’m just glad Ag has remained at its current price point

  34. So Krates says

Been liquidating some higher premium moderns over the last few months. Dumped my 2006 and 2011 ASE sets last week. Picked them up about two years back and was getting tired of watching them fall in value (plus that 2011 coffin is HUGE). They came out at $100 and $300 and have had a similar ROI. Anyone know their approximate peak prices?

  35. Qui Transtulit Sustinet says

Based on the most recent US Mint Sales Report, it appears the 2012 Acadia three-coin set has joined El Junque and Volcanoes as 2012 sold out sets.

Acadia is the only set listed in the report with -0- sales for the reporting period.

The report lists total sales of Acadia as 19, 940. In the past, sets listed with zero sales have usually been identified as “unavailable” in short order, then as “sold out”. In this case, the three-coin Acadia set simply no longer appears on the Mint website with the other available ATB sets.

Chaco Culture, with only a slightly smaller reported mintage, may be the next to become unavailable. If so, that will leave Denali as the only 2012 three-coin set still available.

I know most people consider these three-coin ATB sets to be grossly overpriced at $9.95 for three clad quarters, and I have to agree. Nonetheless, I do like the presentation and have picked up some sets, including Volcanoes and Acadia.

Because I visited and hiked remote and wonderful Chaco Canyon in New Mexico with my wife and daughter, I actually bought TWO of those overpriced sets! Since I appreciate Great Blue Herons, which I see often at or near my home, I also have my eye on a Bombay Hook set. Buy coins you like—invest in under priced stocks.

Bought one TR bullion puck, and for now at least, only plan to buy one TR ‘P’ puck— on subscription, since I want one vapor blasted Fort Moultrie as well (visited during an enjoyable family vacation in South Carolina that also included the boat tour circumnavigation of Fort Sumter). I especially like ATB’s with memories attached. See America first (no disrespect meant toward Canada, Mexico or any other place).

Welcome to Diana, and thanks to Dan, who I hope will post in the future….

  36. Sith says

@Diana – Considering all the off topic discussions going on it might be a good thing to broaden the topics on the blog. Saying that IMHO their is at least one troll, that would need to be reigned in, you may lose a few readers because of the heated discussion, but then again those people could avoid topics that do not interest them, and the off topic bleed over should stop. They only other thing I can say is if you go in that direction, and it sticks you will need to rename the blog.. Why not add a third blog, this was already done once to separate world coin discussions, when the world mint news blog was created

  37. DBR says

    @ Felson who wrote:

“I speculate that based on the time it took the mint to produce the proof coins, they have little interest in making more of the 2016 coin than they have too.”

I agree with you 100%, and think you are reading the mint’s mood on a 30th anniversary ASE set/offering.

To Dan of MNB: thank you and please continue to contribute.

To Diana of MNB: Welcome and enjoy the blog, the information and the commentors. I’m more of a dilettante in the field of coins, and am mostly an observer/collector. But a lot of the other voices here at MNB are true experts.

The readership and visitors to this blog for sure run the gamut in variety.

To be associated with something you love, like coins, is sure to be gratifying. Welcome!!!

  38. Buzz Killington says

    @SK —

I remember selling a set of 2011 ASEs for under $700, maybe 1 month after its release, and thinking that I missed the peak at that time. I don’t think they ever hit $1K, though.

  39. So Krates says

Too Lazy To Quote says – “It was the ’18 Cumberland design among others the CFA/CCAC screwed up…”

The CCAC overwhelmingly endorsed the Turtle (GA-03) for Cumberland 2018.

  40. Barry says

SoKrates- The article I posted earlier may or may not have been the original law. I did read the repealed / revised law is in line with your posted link. Here is a reliable article from the BBC that is about going cashless. Diana, this fits well with your article.
    http://www.bbc.com/capital/story/20160922-the-countries-where-cash-is-on-the-verge-of-extinction
btw, for those thinking about a subscription to get the TR puck you can always refuse delivery if sales don’t meet expectations.

  41. So Krates says

Thanks, Buzz. That’s a respectable return. These two sets have held up well (if purchased at issue)…much better than the SF and WP sets. It’s always tough to call the peak . The only time I got close was with the BHOFs.

  42. Leo S. says

FS Collectors (Assuming there are any left)

Looks like Lou is finally gone. We are now down to the Dirty Dozen. Shouldn’t take any longer that 6 or 7 years to sell out the rest. Wish I had never started this series.

  43. So Krates says

    OT

Listened to/watched the House Financial Services Committee questioning the Wells CEO. They were tougher than the Senate was last week. I haven’t seen both sides agree this much in a long time. My gut tells me this Mr Stumpf character may very well be the first of the Banksters to be made an example of and actually do some time.

  44. Barry says

@gatortreke- Cash is being demonized to slowly change public opinion. It looks like they are using some backdoor means in Europe by having banks charge customers for cash deposits to move things along. Read the BBC article. The banks can charge businesses either way by credit card fees or cash deposit fees. In reality customers pay as these costs are passed along. I would have never thought a bank would charge anyone to deposit cash.

  45. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

    So Krates:

My recollection is that the peak for the 2006 ASE was hovering around $500 and the peak for the 2011 ASE hovered around $750. I was totally asleep at the wheel on the 2006 and bought it a while later at $425 (gulp). Did much better on the 2011 as I sold several of them for around $650 each. Still have a couple.

All: On the TR vapor blasted 5 oz: I will probably line up at the gate when the race starts and buy two if I can get them- one to keep and one for speculation. As I look back at my ATB purchases I see a patchwork of scores, missed opportunities and failure to keep up with the demand$$$ of the series…

  46. Buzz Killington says

I am *not* one of those guys who wants to buy and hold a bunch of stuff, hoping it will go up.

I want a quick flip with a locked in profit to lower the price of the one that I keep, and tuck away in the Bank Deposit Box. That is why I rarely play the flip game.

That 2011 ASE set and the Trumans have been the best for me so far. I flipped a couple of Gold BHOFs for more than one could get now, but that, too was underwhelming even at the time.

I can’t think of something off the top of my head that was better off 5 years after the Mint issued it than it was right afterward (adjusting for bullion price differences, of course). Perhaps the First Spouses will be the rare exception? (I’m not going to hold my breath.)

  47. Yes, But...You Can't Take It With You says

Buzz: The only ones I can think of that brought a higher price at five years than they did right after issue are the 1995 W ASE and the 1999 Silver Proof Set. And both of those have come down since their highs.

  48. KML in KY says

I like the TR design. I don’t buy the clad quarters but I bought some of the 5 oz bullion and have a subscription for the “P’ pucks. I have all the “P” pucks so far and hope to end up with a couple of complete sets if finances allow.

Bigguy, You are right to take your time and shop around for these coins. Great Collections has some good deals. I bought a gold SLQ from the Mint and sent it to NGC and got a SP 70 and I got 10 of the gold dimes from the Mint and got 9 SP 70’s and 1 SP 69. When the gold WL halves come out I may just wait and buy a 70 or 2 on the secondary market rather than going through the hassle and expense of buying from the Mint and submitting them myself.

Off topic – the Mint finally has pictures and description for the Reagan C&C set. Apparently there is going to be a HH limit of 5 rather than 1. I will buy 5 because I like them and plan on keeping them awhile. With a mintage of 150,000 they’re probably not going to be much of a money maker for flippers.

KML in KY says “When the gold WL halves come out I may just wait and buy a 70 or 2 on the secondary market rather than going through the hassle and expense of buying from the Mint and submitting them myself.”

That is PRECISELY what texasgse and PCGS is hoping for. Even If you are a long time NGC person and all that you buy is Currently NGC. They want you to continue to put enough pressure on the Hot Items that eventually you will buy PCGS or new people will buy PCGS.

Looking at the Winged Head Liberty 70s selling for low to mid $240s, week after week after week. Why oh why Knowing that texasegse will be in the SLQ market would anyone buy and submit and take a Chance on getting a 70 when texasegse will Eventually flood the market with 70s in the $575 range?

The goal is that on every coin blog out there people say “I’m going to wait on getting a 70 until texasgse enters the market” . That’s the goal. For texasgse to be #1 in the 70s graded market and for PCGS to gain an even greater share of the market.

And it really doesn’t matter whether you Stick to NGC or not, eventually NGC pricing will have to come down to match PCGS pricing.

SO…Any way it goes pricing on the Sale side for 70s is going to come down on the offerings texasgse chooses.

SO far texasgse has chosen the 2015 HR Liberty, the 2016 Winged Head dime, the 2016 Liberty Silver medals and the 2016 Standing Liberty quarters.

Simple search this morning of the 70 dimes Sold shows 2,912 Sold PCGS and 199 NGC. That’s 94% for PCGS vs. 6% for NGC…

  52. data dave says

@Leo S – I am one of the rare FS collectors. I completed the proof collection but luckily stopped after the first 4 on the UNC side. At least I have a little gold to show for my efforts, but the series is not very popular. Looks like Ford is a lock for lowest UNC mintage, but like you said, it could be years before they are all gone.

  53. data dave says

@cagcrisp – I love your market analysis on the PCGS 70s. I have never submitted a coin and keep mine in OGP but I enjoy reading about the strategy and tactics related to coin collecting.

  54. says

Cag, if it is a market share play by PCGS and one could draw that conclusion by the massive amount of dumping by them…

I can’t help but to think that all that red and orange spotting of gold coins within PCGS slabs has had an impact upon PCGS’ Modern coin Market Share…?

It appears most posters here as well as dealers I’ve been offloading my BHoFs to have a relationship with NGC, not PCGS.

  55. cagcrisp says

@KCSO, I don’t keep up with Pop Reports so it would be interesting to see the breakout between PCGS vs. NGC on the dime, quarter and Liberty Silver medal to see the Actual submissions…

  56. Gary Not Dave says

    @Leo S.
The Mint messed up on that FS Series….They should of just done Presidential Gold Coins to go with each release of the Presidential Dollars. I couldn’t bring my self to pull the trigger on any of the FS Gold Coins, although I did ponder Martha, Mary Todd and Jackie! But couldn’t do it.
But, you never know, maybe down the road these will find more followers, kinda like the Jackie Robinson Coin did?

  57. says

Cag, yes but would, I’ll post the NGC spread here later today or Saturday am.

Would be helpful if someone could post the PCGS spreads for the aforementioned for the comparison
