U.S. Mint opens sales for rolls and bags of Ellis Island quarters

Press release courtesy of the United States Mint.

Coming on Wednesday, a look at “The quarter that might have been: Cumberland Island’s rejected turtle design.”

The United States Mint opened sales for products featuring America the Beautiful Quarters Program coins honoring Ellis Island at noon today (August 28).

The coin’s reverse design depicts an immigrant family approaching Ellis Island with a mixture of hope and uncertainty. The hospital building can be seen in the background. Inscriptions are ELLIS ISLAND, NEW JERSEY, 2017, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was designed by Barbara Fox, Artistic Infusion Program designer, and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, United States Mint sculptor-engraver. The obverse design features the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan.

The special numismatic wrapping for the coin rolls displays the name Ellis Island; the abbreviation NJ for New Jersey; $10, the face value of its contents; and P, D, or S for the mint of origin. The canvas bags have a tag with Ellis Island, NJ, and P, D, or S.

Good to see means that my bank will have some rolls in a week or two. Picked up my APE today funny story on that one also they should be over soon? Good Luck All”>”>”>”>”>”>”>”>”>”>”>”>

  2. Louis Golino says

I think the AP’s bought more of these than the last 2 because the subject matter resonates for so many people. For example, my maternal grandfather for whom I am named, came from Italy through Ellis Island about 100 years ago.

  3. Just Another Dave In Pa says

So Ellis Island opened in 1892 and the US Mint opened in 1792.

Columbus “discovered” America in 1492 although if you read the book 1491 by Charles Mann then you might see it differently.

At the 1992 Democratic National Convention, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton accepted his party’s presidential nomination on behalf of the “forgotten middle class”.

25 years later and the forgotten middle class has sunken even further into oblivion. This is largely because of policies like NAFTA enacted by Clinton. That sucking sound you hear?…………….

    ” Wow. Wow. Wow…

    17XC 2017 225TH ANN ENHANCED UNC SET 187,304 (23,969) ”

The events around the EU Set make me think of a Volcano. It blew its top, now an ever increasing flow of hot lava is coming down the slope to incinerate anything in its path.

  13. Einbahnstrasse says

On those Low Mintage Wonders, here are the current Boys Town sales as a percentage of the current low mintage records in each category:

    Gold proof: 6424/13266 = 48.4%
    Gold unc: 1946/5150 = 37.8%
    Silver proof: 28006/61992 = 45.1%
    Silver unc: 9710/14497 = 67.0%
    Clad proof: 21101/47326 = 44.6%
    Clad unc: 14092/21019 = 67.0%

I’d say the silver unc. and clad unc. will probably wind up *not* being record lows–the surge of late buyers in December will be enough to put them over the top. The other four aren’t even halfway there yet, so I have a hard time seeing them getting there.

Interesting how the gold unc. is even farther off the pace than the gold proof, while the opposite is true for the silver and clad. Not sure how to explain that one….

I had a front row seat to the storm. Watched it pass by the coast. No rain or wind to speak of, just a nice cool breeze out of the North.

  15. Scott says

@ Just Another Dave In Pa, that sucking sound you hear is the Federal Reserve sucking the remaining wealth out of the middle class…..

  16. earthling says

The sucking sound us UAW members heard was the General sucking our Training Money into his Mansion up in Harrison Township. Too bad he’s gone now. Oh well maybe his family he left behind are enjoying the fancy digs. Too bad they might end up as guests in hi-risk hotel soon. Three hots and a cot after the lite slap to the wrist.

  17. Fred C. Dobbs says

The sucking sound is the Fed, with no % on OUR savings for what 10 years & BofA & other swampkings charging 18-28% for a Visa……criminal, what happened to usury, oh banks are exempt, how $weet….. oh & the CEO salary explosion, kind of anohter factor while they fight a $12 an hr wage……many factors but the top 1% keep getting more & more……..@ least I got my Pd @ $177 an oz…….

  18. John Q. Coinage says

Fred has a point – also seems that the premiums on the Ellis Island are up a bit, so are the #’s if @ almost 4ok for bullion no ltd. issue as with Douglas or Arkansas River…..are they still selling the bullion? About 116 now, IF they jack it up to 120+ the mint issues may come into my playbook again! PS: What is up with the EU, the set that wont go away!!
