U.S. Mint Shares Release Dates for 2016 Coin & Currency Set and Platinum Eagle Proof Coin

2016 Native American dollar reverse

The U.S. Mint’s product release schedule for 2016 remains a work in progress; before today, the only new items due for release in the month of June were rolls and bags of the Harpers Ferry America the Beautiful quarters.

Many have suspected that some products currently languishing at the bottom of the schedule with launch dates “To Be Determined” would be summoned to break up that empty space on the June calendar. That is exactly what happened early this morning, and at least one of the two items now gearing up for release can be considered a surprise.

The first addition to June’s list of new offerings is the 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency Set, which is not entirely unexpected. After all, the set had originally been slated for a March 14 launch when this year’s calendar first appeared in December. Now the Mint is planning to debut the item on June 16, just three weeks from today.

Other than a release date, the only product information we have is that the Native American dollar contained in the set will carry the San Francisco Mint’s “S” mint mark. Last year’s set included a dollar with the West Point Mint’s “W” mint mark, while 2014’s debut set included a “D”-marked coin struck in Denver.

Although the 2015 Coin & Currency set is still available — it’s sold 88,233 sets of a possible 90,000 — these issues have proven quite popular, due in part to their low cost and to the exclusive Enhanced Uncirculated finish applied to the Native American dollar included in the set.

Recommended reverse design for the 2016 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin

More surprising is the announcement that the 2016 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin will be released on June 30. The Mint has had difficulty procuring a large quantity of platinum planchets lately, a problem that caused last year’s Platinum Eagle to be delayed for much of the year before it was given a hasty December release date and a low mintage limit. The Mint has also had to postpone the release of 2016 Platinum Eagle bullion coins, which had been loosely planned for early spring of this year.

Although last year’s Platinum Eagle effectively sold out its complete inventory in 10 minutes, it seems unlikely that the Mint will give a significant boost to the mintage of this year’s issue. Production on these coins has consistently fallen in recent years, with 5,745 sold in 2013, 4,596 sold in 2014, and 3,881 sold in 2015.

It’s Amazing to me that there are not more comments on the two product announcements that KCSO reported last night. Amazing. The Standing Liberty Quarter has now been pushed out a Least another month and yet no comment? about what ramification this has on the three hottest Mint products for 2016? Amazing…

How about this. I want this to be just as Cryptic as it can Possibly be:
” Because of the Mint’s product schedule announcement last night, the 2016 Winged Liberty Head dime just Got More Valuable. ”

How’s that for Cryptic? (And…Nope I will not further clarify what I mean)…

  2. cagcrisp says

I will repeat this post that I made 1 week ago:

    May 19, 2016 at 9:19 am
Random thoughts on the Standing Liberty Quarter (SLQ)…

    1. For those wanting a Single Gold Standing Liberty Quarter, not concerned about short term aftermarket pricing and Not concerned about Mintage…The delay is Good News
    2. For Anyone other than 1. …The delay is Bad News
    3. The household limit should be the least of your concerns
    4. Anyone will be able to get the Single SLQ if you want one
    5. The pendulum will swing too far the other direction. As good as the aftermarket for the Winged Liberty head has been, it will be that bad for the SLQ.
    6. You should be able to purchase a single SLQ for up/down $25 of Mint pricing within 6 weeks of launch

  3. smalltimecollector says

I think that Liberty’s pose reminds me of a pole dancer, there is also odd left hand and the appearance of 6 toes. Olive branch needs work as well as the “hidden leg on the Eagle.
Good thing I’m not on the committee…

  4. smalltimecollector says

cagcrisp, does my comment about retraining the die operators how to properly align the machines prior to the sl count?

  5. cagcrisp says

I don’t see the Mint keeping the mintage on the Platinum Proof at 4,000. I see 6,000-10,000.

Anywhere close to 4,000 and you are going to have a Website Nightmare…

  6. Eddie says

It doesn’t bother me in the least as a matter of fact I need the extra time to save money for the SLQ.

  7. Scott says

The endless TBD nonsense is one of the many reasons that 2016 will be the last year I buy anything directly from the U.S. mint. These people specialize in making a cluster out of everything they sell.

  8. Rob says

Hypothetical situation: If the mintage on the 2016 platinum proof is set to 6,000-10,000 and they end up only selling less than 3,800 of them during the entire year will this coin be in more or less demand than the 2015??

  9. Hawkster says

As illustrated in the above MNB’s article on the 2016 platinum eagle proof, the reverse design recommendation is a “sheer” delight to behold.

  10. Brad says

Ha Ha! Couldn’t help but notice that myself, Hawkster! She’s looking mighty fine on there, I have to admit! I almost commented on it, but didn’t want to be regarded as having my mind in the gutter! Even though I wasn’t the only one thinking it!

  11. fmtransmitter says

oh, not the code talkers, the PL Proof, she and her bird are stunning…Would love to see a silver version in rev proof…

  12. Dustyroads says

This suggested Platinum design above has some very interesting nuances in it. Notice the Eagles talons are in the forward position, that would mean it’s either landing or about to strike it’s prey. Also notice Liberty appears to be looking in the same direction as the Eagle, giving the impression they both are focusing on the same object. Then take a look at Liberties right hand, notice it’s in the open position as though she’s letting go of the olive branch.
What’s funny about the design is that it’s impossible for the same air to blow the flame on the torch to the left, and Liberties hair to the right. Other than that, the left moving air is working in the design as seen in the ( falling ) olive branch. And yes, more than curious about how this design will transition to metal.

  13. earthling says

The Eagle and Miss Liberty have both spotted a nice 15 lb Salmon. They both want it … bad. Someone call Jenny. Liberty needs help in cutting back a bit. The Eagle is probably trying to feed its family.

  14. earthling says

The Plat Proof will be limited to 200,000. It will sell out in 6 days , the first hour will see 150,000 go like so much bullion. Since there IS no bullion, the Proofs will SELL like bullion.

Bullion buyers don’t understand what Proof Coins are about. They see Bullion.

  15. GoldFishin says

@Dusty- A swirling West Northwesterly breeze could do close to what is portrayed on the coin. Those dreadlocks are too heavy to blow directly to the west, but would more likely blow in an upward fashion bouncing off her shoulders. Everything else….the sheer gown and wrap, as well as the flame would take very little breeze to blow them around.
At least she ain’t got man hands! Although that thigh looks like she could play for the Redwings. 🙂

  16. Dustyroads says

Ok, I see what happened to the talons. The earliest design had the eagle holding an olive branch in it’s left talon with the right slightly tucked under.

  17. Goat says

For all that run figures. “coins not seen the light of day”

The amount of AGE,APE, minted by the mint/bullion over the last seven years (since the 2008-2009 stock market pullback) what % is being held and not been sold . My guess (as a whole) is around 90% (+-) held . I know some of the figures can be from the graders quantities and OGP sales. What else am I missing ?

Give Me Da Money Plz posted “I hope to begin collecting the 1997 to 2008 1/10th Ounce Platinum Eagles, but it has been difficult finding them from reputable dealers “.

Even in the time frame 1997-2008 is a mystery and the mintage’s were more in quantity in these years.

  18. stephen m says

Cagcrisp, A lot, myself included, haven’t the money for gold offerings. This is maybe the reason for lack of comments. The mint does what it wants. Hang in there.

  19. says

Dusty says “it’s impossible for the same air to blow the flame on the torch to the left, and Liberties hair to the right.”

Technically, it is possible. Miss Liberty is so smok’n Hot, that’s there a thermal vortex forming and hence the bidirectional flow.., the eagle, well he’s really just hovering in the uplifts.., see, ya learn something everyday 😉

  20. earthling says

The Artists employed by the Mint use different means to get into a creative state. The rules of the real physical world do not apply to the unreal worlds depicted on our hi art US Mint products.

Don’t try to apply logic to this art. Just dig deep and apply all your money.

    Try to be happy. 🙂

  21. Erik H says

Dusty, some of Liberty’s hair is positioned to the left. If someone with long hair moves their head in a rapid motion it would more than likely be able to overcome a light wind. (I’m a long hair hippie so I’m speaking from experience LOL)

  22. earthling says

I just looked at an ebay listing for a 2015 APE. No mention of PCGS or NGC or a grade or anything. I guess you would need to assume original mint packaging, although there is no mention of that either.

    The price ? Only $6500.00 !

    But what do you get?

Not something I know anything about.

Would it be possible you’d get nothing but a picture? Maybe. No mention is made of you getting anything physical.

  23. Dustyroads says

I didn’t notice that some of Liberties hair is blowing in the same direction as the torch, I do now.

Erik…Gee, thanks for that mental image…

Hi earthling, The following is from the listing you pointed out. What’s not clear?

“2015 W American Eagle Platinum 1 oz Proof Coin PM8 In Stock Ready To Ship”

“Still sealed in the original box ”

It says PM8 … Still sealed in the original box.

BTW, I sent the seller a note to post a photo of the box. We’ll see what they do or don’t do.

  25. earthling says

Hey thanks for the further details jayjasper. I guess the obvious problem aside from my ignorance of how to operate my “smart phone” is my lack of knowlege of ebay listings. I once sold things on ebay but its easily been 12 years since I’ve even bought anything off there.

I suppose when you work 7 days a week you just sort of dont do anything anymore. Except try to get some sleep – whenever possible.

Well there’s a Holiday weekend coming up. Maybe Monday I’ll let myself off easy – and only do an 8 hr day.

    Well, whatever.

Are those 2015 APE’s really up that high? If so, it only makes me want to keep mine forever. I guess I’m not a flipper at heart. More of a collector/accumulator/hoarder/buying junkie.

  26. DBR says

Speaking of the U.S. Mint’s schedule of releases for 2016, I received my “United States Mint 2016 Spring Collection” catalogue in the mail today.

Of note: There were lots of large, glossy pictures of the offerings, but no mention or pictures at all of the gold Centennial designs. I don’t think the mint needs to advertise these so my point is that maybe the gold SLQ and the gold WLH aren’t going to be released in the spring at all. But summer? Starts late June.

Secondly, what jumped out at me that I didn’t know was this statement from the mint about the $1 Presidential Coin program: “2016 is the final year of the Presidential $1 Coin Program.” I know all other presidents left are still alive, but I thought the program had an open end. Maybe not. So if other living presidents die in the coming years, I wonder what legislators and the mint might do? Maybe a commemorative medal is all Carter, G. H. W. Bush, Clinton, G.W. Bush, and Obama will get?

In the past it was customary to honor deceased presidents with a postage stamp but that isn’t as visible a tribute today as it used to be with most using e-commerce and little handwritten correspondence.

Thirdly, no mention or picture of APE’s either in the catalogue but they are releasing those coins soon.

  27. Sith says

Sorry, but what is up with the SLQ. It has been delayed? How so, I never knew it hit the schedule

  28. earthling says

I really want at least 1 of those SLQ’s – who knows, maybe even a dozen, or 4, or whatever the HHL turns out to be.

The Coin might provide an extra measure of titillation to my coin hoarding ways, you never know.

What could be the problem? Do we need to bother the POTUS Candidates with these types of questions?

  29. bobo says

Nice art. Who is the artist? The same one who did the 2015 platinum eagle (Iskowitz)? Give this artist more work and the bad ones less work.

This coin placed next to the golden SLQ, two coins abreast, should look especially attractive.

  30. smalltimecollector says

With the positive comments I had to re-look at the PE art and can only add that any Ruben-esque woman I’ve ever seen (in life or art) was endowed with more than a coco-nut’s worth.
The coin is not dis-pleasing in any way, just does not seem accurate to me. I’d like to see the piece in metal.

  31. Jerry Diekmann says

The last platinum coin I bought was in 2004 when they still had fractionals, which is the only way I could buy a Pt coin. I’m thinking of borrowing from myself and maybe springing for the 1 oz. Pt coin this year – I think it is very beautiful – with the money I am saving by not buying the AGE being minted next year. There’s no way I could ever afford a series of either of these coins, so I think I’ll go the “type coin” route – saves me lots and lots of $.

  32. says

Cag, the more I think about it, the more bullish I become on my 150,000 over 10 than I do my original 105,000 over 10.

I keep coming back to this.., mint originally thinks 70,000 gold Mercs is sufficient, ups mintage 55,000 to 125,000 and voilà, a BO in 20 minutes and a CU in 40 minutes.

A lot of customers shut out and a lot of explaining why the Flagship offering can’t last more than 20 minutes.

I can’t bring myself to think that they were NOT caught off guard, I think they were totally taken back and now their lives have gotten more difficult because they totally missed demand. If I was the Director, I would want the Merc to Sell Out.., in a week to a month,., Not 40 frig’n minutes. They do have to answer for that, albeit we’ll never know the extent.

Heck, they may feel they LEFT money on the table..,

& hence, IMO we have yet to see the SLQ due to the rapid sell out of the coin in 45 which would have occurred had they all been in Memphis and all CC check good.

We all know how consistently inconsistent the mint operates, and all of us can reflect on recent knee jerk reactions.., or as you put it., how the pendulum swings😉

i also find it very interesting that many retailers selling 70’s have elected not to lower their price one dollar and chase the weaklings down the rabbit hole.., there’s too many retailers not playing that game, tells me they are comfortable with the prospects on this run.

Who knows, perhaps they’ll feel differently with the SLQ?

  33. merryxmasmrscrooge says

The Mint’s website S*U*C*K*S!! They upgraded it so I cannot access it on my computer even with Windows 10 op system. When I access it, all these pop ups appear saying viruses have entered my computer which they have not. I have to press Device Mgr just to get out. The Mint made their website so heavy it takes a year to upload the stupid pictures. You know, D Carr’s website is very simple and easily accessible even with Windows 7. I mean how many idiots does it take to screw in a light bulb?

  34. NcCoinCollector says

I think those collectors of mercury dimes should be very pleased to add the gold one to their collections. If you bought it because you like it you really can’t miss. I feel the same about the SLQ.

Whomever mentioned the , “Golden Penny” made my day – hilarious. Also very intriguing idea – though I will defer to the wise ones on this site as to the ideas efficacy.

I would like to see the Kennedy silver anniversary set redone on the ATB 5 ounce planchets- not holding breath though.

I’m changing my Guesstimate for the Standing Liberty quarter to 150,000 and HH limit of 20. Having a high HH limit with a higher Mintage will not be a problem . Other than the Big Boys there would not be that many limiting out on a $460.00 product x 20. Why then would I increase the HH limit if I think it is irrelevant ? I’m increasing it for those that Think it is relevant and for those that do the math and look at the minimum orders possible…

I’m going to subcategorize my guesstimate for the SLQ as follows: There will be 75,000 minted with a HH limit of 3. Of the 75,000 there will be 25,000 intentionally minted in the “finned” variety, being this was such a popular option with the gold Merc dime.

  40. data dave says

@cagcrisp – The playing field is shifting on the gold 100 year series. Your thinking is they decided to go back and make a bunch more and thus the dime could be the low mintage of the series. The way gold is flying off the shelf right now, they might be able to sell 150K of the quarters, and 150K of the halves. Because there are more quarter collectors than dimes and more half collectors than quarters, the number of “true” collectors who want just one might keep going up. Whatever happens it will be interesting to follow the numbers on this series and see what is going on a year from now. Any thoughts on the gold NPS UNC? It might get lost in the whole mix this year and end up being pretty low mintage.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (AKA the Survey, the Article and the Facts)

    The Survey:

The United States Mint is considering producing 3 special coins for the 100th anniversary of its classic designs of in 2016. To celebrate this centennial occasion the United States Mint will strike the original coin designs, as they first appeared in 1916, in .9999 Gold. These special 100th anniversary coins will be released over the course of 2016, with approximately 1 month between the releases of each coin. These coins would be:

    • A 1/10 oz. Gold 1916 Mercury Dime with a proof finish and a mintage limit of 70,000 for $170.
    • A ¼ oz. Gold 1916 Standing Liberty coin with a proof finish and a mintage limit of 35,000 for $397.
    • A ½ oz. Gold 1916 Walking Liberty coin with a proof finish and a mintage limit of 25,000 for $770.

    The Article:

A Coin World article in the fall of 2015:

    • Mint officials are projecting sales based on analysis of sales for two recent special gold coins. Tom Jurkowsky, director of the Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications, said that in 2014, the Mint sold 64,305 of the 24-karat gold Proof 1964–2014-W 50th Anniversary John F. Kennedy half dollar, generating $76.2 million in revenue. In 2013, the Mint sold 43,800 Reverse Proof 2013-W American Buffalo gold $50 coins, generating $49.9 million in revenue.
    • Based on the sales performance of those two numismatic products, U.S. Mint official estimate sales for the three 2016 24-karat gold 100th anniversary coins could reach between 145,000 and 225,000 units combined, Jurkowsky said. Those sales represent potential sales revenue of between $54 million and $119 million at prevailing gold prices, he said.

    The Facts:

    • No proof on Any coin
    • Not being Released 1 month apart
    • Pricing was increased $30 for the Mercury Dime, $50 for the Standing Liberty quarter and $70 for the Walking Liberty half (and yes a “custom designed presentation case” was listed in the survey…SO…don’t go down the road that they increased the price because of the wooden box or go down the road it was a “unique design” because every New design is a unique design and takes new tooling)…
    • Mintage on the Survey for the Mercury Dime was listed as 70,000. The article quoted the Mint official of saying for the three coins of between 145,000 and 225,000. We’ve already seen 125,000 limit for the Mercury Dime or Fully 86% of the Low end of the mintage range from the Article.
    • Revenue projected from the Survey for the Mercury Dime was $11,900,000. First week sales for the Mercury Dime were $25,114,500 or a 211% increase off Survey estimate and Fully 54% of the Low end of the revenue range for all three centennial coins from the Article.
    • Standing Liberty Quarter TBD
    • Walking Liberty Half TBD

cagcrisp…If the Mint stays on track and releases the next two in the same way they did the Merc we are going to hit the Mints top projection perfectly based on the Fall 2015 article. However, as you are eluding to the fact that the Mint doesn’t do what they say they will, I agree and would have to say the Mint is going to over shoot their projections by far.

Just unboxed a pair of Queen’s Beasts Lion bullion. Absolutely stunning design, Louis is right on the money. Even though they are produced to a bullion finish, they seem more collectible than stackable. A solid chunk of silver, would not be surprised if the RM eventually brought these out in proof finish with a fancy box in the same type of screw on capsule. Wish the privateers, landmarks, Cleo 2oz bullion pieces were so similarly delivered.

  50. cagcrisp says

@Dustyroads, if I’m correct the Mint will blow the Top off the Upside of their revenue range of $119 million.

IF the Fed doesn’t raise rates, the Walking Liberty half has a chance of exceeding the Upper limit all by itself…

  51. Dustyroads says

cag, I see no reason why they wouldn’t take advantage of an opportunity, too bad it will ruin value. Hopefully long term value isn’t affected.
Goldie Locks is bringing cookies and that’s fine, as long as she doesn’t bring too many. So if the Mint wants to have a 1/4 and 1/2 available for an extended time, they may get it. Thus a short term bust! But they should be cheaper at go.

  52. cagcrisp says

@Dustrroads, I agree with All points made. Since I don’t sell, I’ve never been concerned about short term. I am Not as bullish on Standing Liberty as you are…

  53. earthling says

So is there any chance the Mint will be the first to release a series of Fish Coins? I mean Coins shaped like Tropical Fish. They got the fin detail down pat. Just seems like a natural progression to a series of Tropical Fish.

    @ cagcrisp

The problem that most investors need to realize is that gold and other precious metals are not an investment. This is because there is essentially no risk. It is simply an insurance policy protecting you from runaway inflation. Every fiat currency in the history of the world has failed eventually. The dollar has lost 95% of its purchasing power since 1950. What is it that makes you believe that we will end up different. Trade in fiat, save in precious metals.

  55. Dustyroads says

cag, You may be right, we will see in due time how much demand there is for the SLQ. I’m not sure why you think I’m bullish. I like the classical design fairly well and will decide what to do as time gets closer. I know things can go in different directions at this point, but I will buy at least 1, and no more than a few if the Mint keeps the course. If the Mint rears it’s greedy head, it won’t set well within the numismatic community.

  56. cagcrisp says

@Dustyroads, You wouldn’t have to be very bullish to be more bullish than I am on the Standing Liberty quarter…

Scrooge, I’ve been there too, Adware is tough to get out of your system. It can be in a few different places. Your best going on line and getting tech support to fix the problem.
Also, someone here turned me on to Ghostery, which you can download for free. It will do a great job of preventing trackers from slowing down your browser once you get your system clean again.

  60. Felson says

I am starting to lean towards cagcrisp’s view on the pending SLG and WLH. The mint has struggled with making any real offerings so far this year. The ASE proof is delayed and few of the other offerings have much profit margin. The ATB’s are lagging in sales outside of the bullion coins, which have little profit built in. That all signals a large sale of the gold anniversary coins. There is no way the mint will return 500 million to the general fund this year.

@Scrooge- If you use IE(Internet Explorer), I would recommend getting away from it and use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome instead. I prefer Firefox.
As Dusty mentioned….In addition to whatever virus prevention you utilize, also install the add-ons Ad-Block Plus and Ghostery to help prevent malicious adware, malware, and trackers among others things. I haven’t had a computer crash by virus since I began using Firefox many years ago. Ghostery will prevent access and/or warn if sites, links, or pages you view should be avoided. Good luck getting rid of your virus. If you haven’t done so, back up all your documents, files, photos, etc. immediately…sometimes you don’t get a second chance.

Malwarebytes and SpyBot Search & Destroy both do a very good job of removing malicious malware, adware, trojans, etc. They both have a free version that does a fine job. You can run them whenever you want and don’t have them on all the time slowing your computer down.

  64. DBR says

In the interest of comparing and contrasting, I just received my 2016 WLH/Mercury gold dime today! I purchased it from the Coin Vault on Aoril 25th, after getting shut out of the ordering stampede on the U.S. Mint’s site. I paid $299.00 for the coin in OGP.

I know I paid a premium of $100 over the mint’s price but it was worth it. I had peace of mind knowing I was locked in with a purchase through Coin Vault even though it took just over a month to be shipped and arrive. I love the design and my coin and packaging appeared pristine and not prescreened. I’m pleased. I wanted this design in gold. From the looks of my coin the obverse looks like the weaker strike. The reverse looks strong and crisp, surprisingly, given the complaints that it lacked design detail.

I may have overpaid for this offering, but what if I placed my hopes in the mint’s ability to truly have something go on “back order” or “currently unavailable” and still be able to deliver later even though no email alerts have gone out again for the dime?

For those who truly love this design and its beauty and history and were not able to purchase, then the anxiety level would have been high this past month as we waited for mint emails about it being “In Stock” again with so seemingly few left for sale.

I paid a higher price but I’ve had peace of mind. I wonder if the Big Retailers also had problems finding 2016 gold dime inventory for their customers?

I can’t imagine what the gold Centennial SLQ and WLH opening day ordering experiences will be.

I’m in for one each, and bottom line: the coin was worth the wait and the additional premium. It’s beautiful.

@ earthling – Your exasperation is palpable. It sounds like you’re not making a “living”, but rather you’re making a “dying”. I hope you’re not on an endless hamster wheel of working and spending but rather have a have a plan outlined with the goal of getting out of the rat race at some finite point. It makes all the difference getting through those tough 12 hr days when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel no matter how far away.

I have no idea of your circumstances but if you haven’t already, I would encourage you to pick a number. A number that is enough to kick out the minimum amount to cover your bills. Cut your expenses to the bone (immigrant style) and when you get there (Investment income > expenses) YOU can decide whether to continue to work, cut down to part time, quit, volunteer somewhere, whatever you want.

  66. cagcrisp says

@ DBR. Glad that you are happy with your purchase and Glad that you will be aboard for the Standing Liberty and Walking Liberty. You Shouldn’t have any problem getting one (or multiple) of each…

  67. KCSO says

A few of us have discussed that possibility, I wanted to see if you were thinking the same.

I personally think there will be more universal appeal or demand for SLQ over the WHL, not in that the WHL is a lesser design, but due a few unique aspects of the SLQ, that being,

    – the one-off 1916 design
    – the fact the SLQ’s are not cheap in decent condition and there is a sustained market demand for them
    – in this state of Political Correctness, I must hand it to the mint, they were really ballsy to run with the ’16 design, they easily could have gone with chain mail and left it at that, nipple or no nipple, the photo I’ve seen is pretty darn close to my classic AU
    – Also, from the photo it appears the SLQ will be well struck and to a higher fidelity than the WHL, if the case, that alone will bag more collector’s interest and further demand
    – The Reverse, while not my favorite Eagle design, it’s an eagle in flight, and how many of those do we really get or have gotten on classics? As a collector of just eagle designs, a few examples of this eagle are a must
    – And lastly, if we look at the ratio of Quarter ounce gold in relation to our other ounce size holdings, I suspect it’s rather low. So the SLQ is a good opportunity to add some quarter ounces to the portfolio

While I firmly believe the mint was taken back and did not expect a 20 minute BO, and probably feels they left a lot of money on the table, I truly hope they keep mintage under 125,000 and avoid going haywire with a 150,000 or MTD release. I’m preparing for 150,000, hoping <125,000.

  68. KCSO says

I often can’t help to think what the ’09 UHR release would have looked like had the mint structured the release to look like:

    Mintage: 100,000
    HHL: 50

I suspect there would have been a considerablely different outcome in how the released progressed. Might actually have impacted the current market value considerably.

Thinking back, the ’09 UHR was one of the few times the mint has had a MTD and a HHL of 1 for a period, actually I can’t recall any other time.

Makes ya wonder what would have happened if the mint went 125,000 and a HHL of 50 back in 2009.., point is, they’ve figured out how to move stock, when they inadvertently underestimate demand 😉

  69. Jeff says

I don’t know why I continue to see posters say a “sell out” when in fact 10% (and more) will be returned. Is this how you explain to yourself and those around you made a good purchase? I say not. the poorly executed design is not accurate, the obvious quality is deplorable, you can now buy a knockoff for below mint issued price real soon. So this UFR will go down as a pitiful attempt to reproduce a classic which the current cartoonist the mint has employee can not pull off.

  70. cagcrisp says

On the Winged Liberty head dime

OF the last 12 completed sales on the bay there has only been 1 auction. I look at auctions with a minimum of 1 bid and there are currently Only 30. SO…auctions are thinning out and BIN’s are ruling the roost…

  71. Felson says

Jeff not sure what has got your panties in a bunch against the mint. The Mercury Dime has never been declared a sellout by the mint, but is NLA and has been since about 20 minutes into the offering. No one knows how many have been returned or how many were not sold due to credit card or other issues. You also need to figure out what you want to say “you can now buy a knockoff for below mint issued price real soon”, so can you buy it less than issue or will you be able to buy it less than issue? You state you can and then say you will be able too all in the same sentence.

  72. cagcrisp says

The last 12 sales on the bay for “2016 mercury dime -69 -70”:

    $259.94 BIN
    $259.95 BIN
    $259.95 BIN
    $259.99 BIN
    $249.99 BIN
    $258.95 BIN
    $241.76 Auction
    $259.70 BIN
    $257.00 BIN
$259.75 BIN (Major coin dealer that has Currently sold 55 @ or above $259.75)
$259.95 BIN (Major coin dealer that has Currently sold 126 @ or above $259.95)
    $279.99 BIN

  73. KCSO says

That’s interesting Cag, in a search I just ran of ALL auction lustings,, they total less around 40%’ish of TOTAL listings, and the vast majority of those auctions are starting at $260+, which is essentially a BIN with upwards potential.

From the trend if appears the weaker hands are thinning out, especially in OGP.

Perhaps we’re at a transition point between weak to strong and we’ll see more upward pull in short order. Everyone that placed an order for the WHL has now received the credit card bill that’s due within 3 weeks, likely.

  74. cagcrisp says

I’m in the minority camp that thinks the stock market has a rate increase priced in and the precious metals market does Not…

  75. KCSO says

Cag, what does the “-69 -70”: mean?

It doesn’t pull those in your search?

  76. cagcrisp says

I’m also in the minority camp that thinks Exaggerator would have beaten Nyquist on a dry track at Pimlico…

  77. joe#2 says

Rather have OGP gold Merc. than graded “69” by far.
If the coin goes no lower in OGP than $235, I’m happy. 🙂

  78. Larry says

HSN guy cracks me up sometimes. Last night when he was hawking the golf WLH dime, he said “Mercury dimes haven’t been made since 1947”. Dude, get your facts straight.

  79. cagcrisp says

@ KSCO, “Cag, what does the “-69 -70”: mean?”

I’m trying to ONLY pull OGP in my search. The Only way to do that is to knock out the 69’s and 70’s. The (-) sign before 69 or 70 eliminates anything with 69 or 70 in the title search…

  80. cagcrisp says

Dang…An Eisenhower and a Kennedy sold last night with 1 bid for $150.00…

  81. says

Cag, here’s something to consider, back on 21 April with the release of the WHL,,

    – The mint sold what equated to 302 ounces of gold per minute over the initial 121,000 orders placed.

Applying that same demand to the SLQ (and I totally get that there’s a price disparity between the two and demand will be likely be less due to the price point, but let’s assume ceteris parabus for a moment), on a pure ounce of gold sold basis,

A SLQ with the following mintage may look like:

    65,000 – CU in 53 minutes
75,000 – CU in an hour
85,000 – CU in an hour and 10 minutes
95,000 – CU in hour and twenty
    105,000 – CU in 90 minutes

Just a thought, Ok, you all have a great weekend, off to to find a big ole watermelon

  82. says

Oh, quick question for the Blog – I have boxes of $1 Silver Baseball Hall of Fame coins (Proof & UNC) that I just need to get out from under, and prefer to unload like wholesale, in a cash transaction.

Any thoughts on how to unload en mass? Any dealers, organizations, or venues that may be interested? Wholesale, for cash?

    Thanks

  83. Dustyroads says

cagcrisp…Taking into consideration the amount of cash the Fed has on it’s books right now, too much interest will be expensive for the Fed. They may not be able to afford more than a couple points. And if gold can’t stand the heat, well then we know what that means. I personally see red flags and feel it’s a good time to be alert.
I agree about Exaggerator and wet tracks. Kind of tickled to see a winning horse named Nyquist. We’re all laughing about it here.

  84. So Krates says

Since the Fed Funds target rate was raised on Dec.16, 2015 the gold price has increased 14%.

  85. So Krates says

Dustyroads, care to expound? I stated a fact with no opinion attached. We were at $1068 at the rate hike and $1213 today. An increase of $145 (approx 30% annualized). Around the same time last year (when many/most here were valuing Au @ $800-$900), I posed the following question to the board:

Would you rather own $100K worth of SPY or 100 AGEs?

  86. Dustyroads says

So Krates…Sorry, you’re right. I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m feeling at the moment we’re headed back there.

  87. Dustyroads says

I’ve never thought we will ever see $5,000., but I know crossing the $2,000. level is realistic.

  88. smalltimecollector says

My last (latest?) comment as a coin collector and an artist on the ape design.
The components appear more as a collage than a cohesive design.
The direction hair is blowing would dictate the eagle should be flying the opposite direction (into the wind). The non-natural olive branch appears to have the top bent or broken.
What would greatly improve the design would be the eagle posed in a more vertical position as though it had just breezed past Liberty and was banking hard right so as to wrap her in a protective nature. I would suggest the olive branch be rendered true to the species, and Liberty have her pose less pole dancer like.

  89. earthling says

    smalltimecollector

Actually if the US Mint claimed to have a trained Chimp cut n pasting images to create their new Coin designs – it might dramatically increase their sales.

LOL. Anythings worth a try. 😉

  90. Richard says

Good points on the design smalltimecollector, but as a pilot I can say that if the eagle is just taking off or landing it will do so into the wind. So that part could be correct, though to my untrained eye it does look like the design is far too busy. It almost seems like some of the ’30s commemorative halves, which tried to add too much. Anyway, it is distinctive but too rich for my or wallet.

  91. smalltimecollector says

@ Richard – I agree into the wind. Liberty appears to be walking into the wind (blowing from right to left), Eagle is in a cross-wind or even a little tail wind situation. (I managed airports for over 25 years and got some seat time in, though couldn’t talk my bosses into flight school).
I also wrote an error : What would greatly improve the design would be the eagle posed in a more vertical position as though it had just breezed past Liberty and was banking hard (right should be LEFT) so as to wrap her in a protective nature.

  92. Scott says

Wow…mintage of 10,000 – these things will sell out but definitely not as fast as the 2015. Assuming collectors view the 2015 and 2016 as a “set” (as the mint is trying to sell them as) the 2015 will obviously be the key piece, not the 2016.

  93. Jack says

I love this depiction of Liberty. smalltime – You’re right about the “pole dancer” appearance. What’s not to like about a pole dancer? You can’t seriously prefer the “Silver Dollar Girl”, with the saggy cheeks, on the Morgan Dollar. It seems to me that Liberty’s hair is blowing to the right, while the flame of her torch blows to the left. Anyhow, this design gets my vote for the nicest modern engraving. I can’t afford it, but it’s beautiful! Jack
