Whitman Publishing Wants Your Imperfect Coins

Whitman-calls-for-damaged-coins

The following is a courtesy post from Mint News Blog’s sister site, Coin Update.

(Atlanta, Georgia)—Whitman Publishing is looking for sharp, high-resolution photographs or scans of “problem” coins to illustrate in upcoming books. Hobbyists who share their images will be credited in the books’ acknowledgments.

“Most of the time we show Mint State pieces with strong details, to give our readers a good understanding of each coin type or die variety,” said Whitman publisher Dennis Tucker. “But coins with problems can be educational, too.”

The publishing firm is looking for coins with: PVC damage; bag marks; scratches; edge bumps, nicks, or dents; holes; or extreme wear.

Image files should be at least 300 dpi at two times actual size. Scans and cell-phone photographs are acceptable as long as the image is high-resolution and clearly illustrates the coin’s problem.

Collectors with images to share can contact Dennis Tucker at dennis.tucker@whitman.com.   ❑

@Jeff Wheat says”I am a bit late to the fractional gold discussion, but as someone on the outside looking in in terms of gold, is there not a way to make a coin out of a gold alloy, perhaps with 1/50 or 1/100 ounce of gold, but around the size of a quarter?”

Good luck with that idea. I don’t see that ever happening. What you are talking about is having the same amount of Gold content and “stretching ” that Gold content to have a larger coin for viewing. The entire world Mints are going in a different direction.

Currently the US Mint has three different Gold “purity ” standards. 90% for Gold commemoratives ( All Liberty Golds, all Indian head Gold and St Gauden Gold),91.67% for AGEs and 99.99% for Buffs , Centennials and FS.

If you go the direction you want you will have a More expensive coin, a manufacturing nightmare with mixing metals (diluting Gold) and the Only positive (that I can see) would be a larger visible coin because these coins never circulate or should be handled.

Your bucking a Lot of history just to get a visablly larger coin…

@Barry, Montana John, Old Big Bird-

Thanks for the feedback. It’s disappointing that more banks don’t have rolls of new coins available. Granted, it’s always fun to get circulated rolls and see what treasures you might find, but sometimes you just want to get a fresh coin for your album… I have been buying the quarter rolls from the mint so I have those, but still frustrating. I suppose there is the thrill of the chase and being able to track down a certain coin. Oh well, next time I’m out on the eastern side of the country, I’ll have to look for the “P” pennies.

  3. So Krates says

I referenced some 1970s-80s Bahamian gold in the last thread as an example of “stretched” gold. I agree with cagcrisp in that the direction is headed the other way… toward pure gold. The Asians and Middle Easterners prefer .9999 and lots of Europeans and Americans agree or don’t care.

The Austrians are great at producing a high purity, larger diameter (but thinner) gold coin. Check out the modern Philharmonikers (13% “larger” than gold Buffs) or the older Ducat restrikes.

@jhawk92 – thanks for the article posting. As I stated the distributors wrap the coins. The Bank pay a fee and DO NOT want to waste the fee on a non retail customer. The larger retail customers get theirs delivered directly to their stores. I am going to forward the article to several friends.

  13. Dustyroads says

cagcrisp, That is very odd. Where does someone come up with a number like 924? I could say that it was a clerical error, but 924 has to come from somewhere. We may see it move again back to wherever it came from.

  14. earthling says

The suspense of opening day for that Gold HR is just building. I’m going out on a limb and forecast 35,000 first day sales. And I’ll give it 18,000 1st hour sales.

I see lots of gambling that this will be a low sales winner. If nothing else the Label crowd will want to get in position for the big payday.

  15. joe#2 says

Louis? Do you know what day when the first batch of 2017 Australia 1 ounce $100 gold southern sky domed proof coin went on sale with APMEX.? Reason why i’m asking is because if i purchase the coin, I don’t want to get someone else’s if they returned it awhile back ago. Thanks Louis.

  16. joe#2 says

Louis? Also the price on the 2017 Australia 1 ounce $100 gold southern sky domed coin has come down a bit in price, As well as the quantity on APMEX seems to keep going up..Do you know what thats about? Thanks again.

  17. data dave says

@cagcrisp – The strong sales (74 @ $2890) of the 4 coin gold proof set really surprise me. That’s not a cheap item and I would have thought all of the collectors have theirs by now. The up and down sales of the gold Walker seem to indicate a lot of graders shopping. Not much else positive in this report.

Also, the silver ATB proof set numbers already pass the clad ATB proof set out of the gate. This continues the trend of proof set sales migrating to silver and away from clad. Clad collectors are becoming rare and the clad sets have been sure money losers, whereas the silver sets are being supported by the PM market.

Thanks as always for posting the numbers!

  18. cagcrisp says

@data dave, I Agree on the 4 coin AGE set. This far into sales and numbers are Still that strong. Just tells you there really is a strong demand for this product.

Just for a reference to How strong sales for the 2016 set is ( currently 17,154) vs. the all time low for the set was 2013 when only 7,877. That’s 117 % More than 2013. That’s truly Amazing. One of the very few items the Mint has going for it year/year.

On the WLH, I think I told you after seeing 778 for w/e 02/05/17 that it was an anomaly. My guess is was Texasgse getting more 70’s and last week were the returns that didn’t make the cut…

  19. cagcrisp says

The Mint has listed information for two of the most highly Unanticipated offerings of the year – The Boys Towns offering and the Effigy Mounds (animal cracker) puck.

The Two items that jumps out at me is that for the 3 coin proof set for Boys Town they have a HHL of 2. IF it was me, I’d put the HHL at 50 and Hope and Pray that the Mint would sell the product limit of 15,000.
With a HHL of 2, the Mint has just doomed sales to Less than 15,000 (and for commemoratives to Not sell 15,000 for the 3 coin set is Hard to do, But the Mint has just found a way to do it).

The animal cracker puck has a Mintage limit of 25,000 (down from the usual 30,000) and for me that’s about 8,000 more than they are going to sell.

The 2012 P Denali sold 15,225, the animal cracker will be the Lowest since then…

  20. Old Big Bird says

Based on the Mint Sales number as of 02/19/17 the ATB “S” quarters for Cumberland and Harpers Ferry will limp
    over the 1 million mark.

  21. Erik H says

cagcrisp, I’m glad you called out Ricky on his spouse “pumping”.

“Bulk purchase” maybe at melt by a refiner.

  22. zephin says

    Gent’s,

Did you noticed the e-mail the US Mint sent out today on the 2017 Kennedy Half Dollar 200-Coin Bags
and Two-Roll Sets …The picture shows a (S mint mark?) But the web site only calls out (D)and(P). The web site shows the S mint mark also??

  23. Old Big Bird says

@zephin – you are correct that the email sent out today does show a “S” mint mark when selling the rolls and 200 bags of P’s & D’s. But I did not see the “S’ on the website they all seemed to be “P”‘s
That is a sharp eye to notice that on the email though. Hey may be the are going to sell Kennedy “S” halves just like the ATB quarters. Now that would increase sales!!!!

  24. Old Big Bird says

@zephin – Just for laughs I called the Mint to advise them that their marketing department just might have made a boob boob. I had the customer service person laughing with me. She agreed that if they did sell the Kennedy halves as “S” like the ATB quarters they would sell a pile of them.

  25. Old Big Bird says

@cagcrisp – what would your opinion be about Uncir. Kennedy halves being sold in rolls or 200 count bags?

  26. zephin says

@ Old Bird…. If you click on the 225 year anniversary pic on the mint web site….it shows the 1/2 JFK (S)?

  27. Old Big Bird says

@zephin – I will be darned you are 100% correct. Does anyone proof read their output there. Now this is not only funny but sad. Old Bird or Old Big Bird that is ok

  28. So Krates says

Advertising a big image of the sharper, nicer, more expensive “S” proof coin in the promo for circulating finish coins is deceptive

  29. zephin says

@ So Krates…I was thinking the same…..”Philadelphia Mint Quietly Releases 2017-P Lincoln Cent” …Hmmmm

    LOL 🙂

  30. cagcrisp says

@Old Big Bird, I would think “S” Kennedys being released in bags or rolls would cause a “Scandal”.

I have read in the past about the Gold $4 Stella and how it caused a “scandal” when it was revealed that some examples showed up around the necks of some Madams in Washington.

The “Stella’s ” were sold at cost to congressman…and well… I don’t know how they could have ended up around the necks of Madams.

Now if you can purchase a Stella for $150,000 you’ve found a deal…

  31. earthling says

Has the Mint rediscovered a “forgotten” Market? Of course I’m talking about the Roll and Bag markets. Does anyone collect those big “Ballistic ” Bags from the Mint? There are ordering instructions about ordering, somewhere on the Mint Website so I’m sure they do sell a few.

I wouldn’t be surprised by seeing Ballistic Bags of 2017-P Lincolns for sale after a discovery of ” no P” 2017-P Lincolns. Do any of the TPGs certify unopened Ballistic Bags yet?

  34. Louis Golino, Author says

Thanks, Diana. I kinda wish they were doing maybe 2 per year, so we don’t need to wait so long to complete it, but this way more people will be able to collect them. I have been able to confirm that if Pluto regains planet statue, they will make one for it. Also, smart to start with Saturn since the pics from Cassini are coming out now. I wonder how the Austrian Mint feels? Flattered?

  35. gatortreke says

@ Louis: Thanks for the planets niobium coin story. My daughter is currently studying the solar system in school and I’m working on her trying to spark the idea of coin collecting in her. So far I’ve only been able to interest her in the Frozen series coins and the annual Chinese 1 oz Panda coins. I’ll add this to my efforts of purchasing an interesting coin series for her.

  36. Louis Golino, Author says

My pleasure, gatortreke. These should look nice in hand. If you click on the main image, there are more, including one of the actual reverse, not a mock-up.

  37. data dave says

So as the Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Gold series wind down it looks like the ones in the LOWEST demand are Johnson, Nixon and Ford. I still believe the key FS proof coin will be Eleanor and then Coolidge. On the UNC side I put Eleanor first again, even though the remaining ones might have lower mintages. It will be interesting to see if there is a NPS like surge when they announce the end of sales.

On the dollar side, the 3 lowest (listed above) will sell about 5 million total. This compares to over 400 million of each state quarter, and 6 million of the other presidential dollars. Currently going for $70 for a set of 39 it will be fun to watch if this set gains or loses ground.

The remaining set is the bronze medal version. I think this set of 41 spouses goes for about $500. A bargain compared to the $30K for the gold version.

  38. earthling says

” No P Lincolns can’t happen, the letter P is part of the master die which makes the working dies. ”

Buttt…. but …. it has to happen. Couldn’t we just get an old fashioned, ” grease filled die”, going … for about a couple hundred or thousand Coins?

It would be so much fun – for everyone.

    👍

  39. DBR says

    @ Louis Golino

Thanks for the article on the planet series coins from Palau. I’ve never even heard of the metal niobium! That Saturn coin certainly showed what is possible in the design and metal composition for the planetary theme. Bimetallic issues are nice. I still want to pick up the 2000 W $10 Library of Congress Bicentennial bimetallic commemorative in gold/platinum. I think that coin was a very noteworthy “first” akin to the rounded/domed 2014 BHOF commemoratives.

    Cagcrisp,
What do you believe to be the BEST gold investment?
I’ve been heavily accumulating silver for the last 2 years, but gold is starting to look more attractive again. So I’m curious about which areas you believe to be the best ways to accumulate gold.

  42. data dave says

@cagcrisp – At least they never seem to run out of the gold proofs so if you want to wait, gold might go down. Although then you run the risk of getting returns. My view on gold is that if you are tired of holding a huge stack of dollars and don’t like stocks, bonds or other currencies, then gold is an attractive alternative.

@data dave, I Am surprised that we don’t have a ‘countdown’ clock on the 1 oz. and 1/2 oz. Gold proofs. With 2017 Gold proofs coming out next week, I don’t think it’s a good idea have two Gold coins of the same denomination on the website at the same time…

  45. HarryB says

@cag: thanks for your comments on gold. I plan to purchase my 2017 AGE proofs for gifts the first day of issue, even though I do not need till June or December. I expect a slow climb in gold spot through the rest of this year. Harry

  46. data dave says

@cagcrisp – They way the site is run gets a D+ in my book.. They should have a countdown for all products before they are removed and they should remove on a standard schedule. They are really behind compared to their online competitors. Like I mentioned in a previous post they still have the 2015 Blue Ridge Parkway quarters listed as an option and it is only when you choose the roll or bag that you want that you find out that it is not available.

Louis? Hello. Just had a question on the 2017 Australia 1 oz $100 Gold Southern Sky Domed Proof . Do you happen to know when APMEX first sold them ( on what day ), Because, I’m thinking about purchasing 1 or 2 and want to make sure that no one has returned them, In other words i would like to purchase them early. Thank you in advance.

  48. Dustyroads says

Palladium has a density of 12.0 grams compared to 10.5 grams for silver. That would yield only a slightly smaller diameter for a Pd coin. Plus, if the coin is to be struck in high relief it would be even smaller.
If the Mint does in deed mint a proof, a small number of them would make this year much more fun.

  49. Louis Golino, Author says

@joe#2- I don’t recall the exact date but it was just over a week ago. However, it was a pre-order, and I believe coins started shipping in the past couple days. You’ve been called out. Explain what you meant before the sliver of remaining doubt about your motive has vanished.

  53. Rick says

Were 19 of ford proof coins sold at mint about 10 days ago? Did you know it before my message?
Did you know MCM sold 8 ford proof coins in one transaction last week?

I do not understand the logic of some ‘smart cookies’ here
Mint sells more than 10 in a week, they call it naive buying driven by pumping here
Mint sells less than 5 in a week, they laugh at People here who don’t share with their extremely negative view on the spouse coins.

  54. Rick says

Let me make it easier for a couple of ‘smart cookies’ here :
Do you know why suddenly a major dealer has many pr69 ford proof coins (they are not first strike). Btw, the pr69/pr70 ratio (according pcgs pop) for ford proof is about 1/5. So this dealer recently cherry picked many pr69 from the mint? Think before you talk.

  55. Rick says

Just double checked my information source, those eight sold last week were NGC PF 69 Betty ford proof coins, NGC pop shows that pf69/pf70 is about 1/2.

  56. Rick says

Another interesting question based on recent pcgs pop updates.

Why did a well-known modern dealer recently have 17 2016 spouse gold coins stabbed as ms 70 David hall (non first strike)? I wouldn’t do it unless I see very good profit potential for ford ms 70 and Nixon ms70 in the near future. Anyway, we have a couple of ‘smart cookies’ here who perhaps know more than this savvy pcgs dealer.

  57. bobo says

I think Rick is entitled to his opinions, and should not be accused of pumping the spouse coins when he expresses his opinions. As homely as I find some of the spouse coins, the fact is, they will be among the lowest mintage coins in US history. As I have pointed out here before, it is likely that the keys will be found in the year 2014, assuming coins already made remain on sale till sold out. I also believe that the most sought after coin will be the Eleanor Roosevelt, both PF and UNC, even if other coins come in with slightly lower mintages, because of her historical importance.

  58. Datadave says

I agree with bobo! Let’s see where things stand 3 years from now. The ford unc might still be on sale.

“A new modern key coin in two weeks, secondary market price to double?”

This is the headline of a thread on a blog that Rick enjoys to post about because it has so many “dealers” on it.

How accurate is the above statement? Well, here are the results So far this year for OGP NPS uncirculated Gold.

On the bay there have been 6 completed auctions (the 6th just completed a few minutes ago) since the NPS uncirculated Gold went off sale.

    6 true auctions.

Here are the Final sales dollars for each completed auction for NPS Gold uncirculated in OGP:

    02/26/17 $545.00
    02/19/17 $500.00
    02/19/17 $514.77
    02/12/17 $646.00
    01/11/17 $501.00
    01/01/17 $482.77

IF a regular guy is selling on the bay Without a store and has to pay 10% bay fees and 3% pal fees, the following (with $5 shipping costs) would reflect profit IF an individual purchased from the Mint the last week it was offered:

    02/26/17 $88.05
    02/19/17 $48.90
    02/19/17 $61.75
    02/12/17 $175.92
    01/11/17 $49.77
    01/01/17 $33.91

    Positive Spin:
A penny is more profit than I made on the NPS Gold uncirculated in OGP because I didn’t buy any.

    Negative Spin:
That’s a Total of 6 true auctions. There were 1,745 of the NPS Gold uncirculated Sold in the last 5 weeks of the Mint’s offering and at some time these Flippers have got to Flip and you’ve got the Boys Town Gold uncirculated coming out in 11 days with a design arguably worse than the NPS Gold design…

  61. Rick says

cag “the smart cookie’, I have to respond because you mentioned my name again. First, I didn’t buy any nps gold coins. I have little interest in those modern commemorative coins. Second, if your number is accurate, I regret that I didn’t buy any nps coins (20% profit in a few weeks, why not?). Third, your math is unfurtunately misleading again (as I always expected). According to NGC or pcgs pop , about 85% nps unc gold coins have been graded MS 70. Why didn’t you report the ebay sold prices for pcgs or NGC ms 70? You really think that any of those raw coins sold on eBay is ms 70?

It seems that you are now reporting daily gold spot prices and daily inventory changes of some us mint coins. Come on, a smart cookie like you shouldn’t do such routine tasks. Finally, it is your illusion that messages posted here can materially impact us mint sales or market prices. If you have suffered from losses in any coins you bought, you have no one else to blame. …..

OT- I’ve decided not to buy the 2017 ATB quarters silver proof set as I’ve noticed the aftermarket value is quite a bit less than issue price. Will pick them up in the secondary market later on. I had been buying them as I don’t buy all the pucks and just wanted the design. As has been discussed in the past I wish they would end mint to demand or shorten the time available to purchase most if not all items. As of now a couple of the “P” pucks may be it for this year.

The question is why would Anyone at this time of the year be buying the 2016 4 coin AGE set with the 2017 4 coin set coming out in 3 days?

Why buy a high Mintage 2016 when you can get a 2017 on Launch day in 3 days?

    Answer: $92.50

IF Gold stays Above $1,250 for the remaining fixes, we Will get a Gold price Increase on Wednesday afternoon and the 4 coin AGE set will go up in price by $92.50 (assuming the Mint doesn’t Increase the Gold price grid)…

Purchased (2) 2017 Australia 1 oz $100 Gold Southern Sky Domed Proof coins.
They look gorgeous…Only 750 mintage worldwide… First domed coin by R.A.M. 2 coin series.
Thanks for heads up on this awesome piece Louis. Hope they do well.

The pricing for the 2017 Proof ASE will be the Same as the 2016 Proof ASE…$53.95

The 2015 Proof ASE was $48.95

According to ‘media’ publications the Mint had to raise the prices for the 2016 Proof ASE because of “additional costs associated with the edge lettering”

Now a year later and the Mint has Chosen to not reduce the price back down to $48.95 because there is no edge lettering

My estimated sales of the 2017 Proof ASE is 700,000

    700,000 x $5.00 = $3.5 million

Rich get richer and poor get poorer

    Oh well…

  67. Mr. Kairu says

@Barry, I am with you on the ATB silver proof quarters. I buy them every year on the secondary market because they are cheaper. I do wonder when the prices will go down for the 2017 ones though. Usually was happy getting them for $20-25 but they are all still at $34ish bucks on the Bay.. I get them to fill my date set Dansco xD

  68. Tinto says

    @cagcrisp
“According to ‘media’ publications the Mint had to raise the prices for the 2016 Proof ASE because of “additional costs associated with the edge lettering””

And the Mint tried to spread those “additional costs” by stuffing the Proof ASE’s into the RR C&C set probably hoping that it would sell much more than the JFK and close to the Mint’s insane mintage of 150k. And not even a line on the folder as to why the ASE was stuffed there (RR signed it into law) instead of a silver medal like in the previous ones! So incompetent …

What happened with all the regular articles? Seem we’ve had a drought this year. I’ve enjoyed reading them and the comment banter for several years…..

  70. Dustyroads says

VA Dave, I hear you, we’ve had this story for a week now. Something that used to never happen on this blog has now become commonplace. I’ve begun to wonder if Dianna has become disenchanted with MNB.

  71. Mattarch says

That would be one guess on the lack of articles. Perhaps the lack of interesting Mint Products is a contributor. I was looking to Part 2 of the January 30th post but have not seen that yet.

  72. Barry says

@Mr. Kairu – Check out APMEX prices as recently they had a lot of the ATB silver quarter sets at about 20.00 although recently they have increased the prices.

Not a very scientific analysis, just an observation. At this same time last year there were 33 articles written on the mintnewsblog site (leaving out Feb. 29), compared to the current 11 articles so far in 2017.

When (our Mint), The U.S. Mint has NOTHING new to offer, And a new gold high relief with 100,000 mintage (lol) 2017 coming out April 6th which 99.99 % could give a rats petuit about, And the same ol same ol Silver eagles, Gold buffaloes and same platinum and yadda yadda yadda every year, There is nothing to get excited about with the same old things every year coming out, No one wants to post anything. I can see that. At least the Royal Australian Mint, Perth Mint and Royal Canadian Mint does something new here and there to get a little bit excited about..We need new leadership at our Mint. It’s been the same boring thing for years, And until that changes, I don’t see any changes here. JMHO..

  77. TheForce says

I think the US Mint destroyed the dollar coin program. I think the edge lettering is awful. The date and mint marks should be on the obverse of the coin. I really don’t understand why the need for edge lettering. Having the dates and mint marks on the obverses and reverses have always suited us well. I also prefer ONE DOLLAR instead of having $1. Looks like a Chucky Cheese token.

Downward Spiral of the “P” pucks Continue…

One week from today, March 7th, the 36th “P” puck, Effigy Mounds will be released. What is the Current trend for the “P” pucks?

The last offering, 2016 Fort Moultrie, could Arguably be the Least in Revenue demand “P” puck of All “P” pucks. From a revenue point of view, the “P” Fort Moultrie is Currently the Lowest $2,420,642.85 (16,143 x $149.95).

The Previous Lowest Revenue “P” puck was the 2015 Bombay Hook with $2,595,484.55 (17,309 x $149.95).

The Fort Moultrie will Probably still be on sale for several weeks so it Could indeed surpass Bombay Hook as the Lowest Revenue “P” puck of All time, however, that goal would only be accomplished because Bombay Hook was Already Pulled by its 12 week.

    …AND…

All this is Before the Effigy Mounds “P” puck hits the market next week. A New Low Mintage “P” puck Wonder in the making.

All you “P” puckers, you’re trying to draw to an inside straight…

In reference to joe#2 says comments on the U.S. Mints same old, same old.
Why not spice it up with a ASE 4 coin “different coin finish set” and have one of
each coin from all 4 different mints

Have a maximum mintage of 50,000 sets

Sounds like a no brainer to me but what do I know

  80. cagcrisp says

You Guys Wanting the 2017 “P” penny.

    Patience.

There were 515.2 million “P” pennies made in January…

  81. earthling says

If they would announce a low mintage limit on the P Pucks – like 14,000… they would see a 4 minute sell-out.

Bump up the price a little bit and there would be no loss in revenue.

Play them fools. They don’t know any better.

    💩

  82. data dave says

Looking more and more like a gold coin increase tomorrow. Last change to get your gold at lower prices. I guess it will help the mint’s revenue with the 2017 gold proofs to be launched on Thursday. I’m probably only going to buy the 1/10 oz ($175 or $180) so it is only a $5 difference and right in line with the past 3 yearly prices of $175(2016), $170 (2015) and $180 (2014).

Never had the funds to buy anymore than the 1/10 version.

  83. data dave says

@earthling – I think they could play that game even up to 15K, but they might piss off the long time series collectors and hurt the sales in the long run. They need to do something with the series. The bullion Effigy puck was at only 19.5K last numbers I saw, 500 less than previous low.
