I’ve been purchasing coins from the Mint since ’07. All the Gold Spouse, MS and PRs..
All Presidential Dollars, and All American Eagles..
After yesterdays experience, I am done with the Mint..
The only thing I will purchase now, is a Portrait of Trump. When it comes available.. That I have been waiting 3 yrs for.

  3. KML in KY says

I’ve been pretty lucky over the years buying from the Mint. Aside from the 19-S RP yesterday and the Eisenhower C&C set I have been able to get at least 1 of everything I’ve ever wanted – all the good stuff and some not so good stuff.

I have owned every Silver Eagle except 95-W and 2008 burnished reverse of 07. I could not bring myself to pay secondary market prices for those coins. The same goes for the 19-S yesterday.

It was worth a try and I would have been happy to get a 19-S yesterday but did not. If I had got one I probably would have flipped it immediately or got it certified and sold it as soon as possible for as much as possible.

Although I still have a pretty good stash, I no longer collect moderns and have liquidated most of mine. There are too many good deals to be had on pre-33 gold and pre-65 silver coins.

Thanks Cag for the First Spouse #’s. If I ever sell my complete set I will include those in the description

  4. KML in KY says

I would be curious to know how many of the eBay presales sold before the 14th had to be refunded because the sellers could not get the coins.

I saw quite a few sellers who sold 5 or 6.

  5. CaliSkier says

Pinehurst managed to scoop up 75+ coins! Wonder how many total, by the top 5-10 retailers? 64 sold and counting!

  6. sharks2th says

Shipping notice email from the mint was sent at 9:33pm today (Friday) for my S ASE RP. It’s coming by dumbpost. The tracking number says FedEx has not picked it up yet.

My ATB subscription was shipped Thursday.

  7. Booya says

Beware if your buying this coin to be graded its must remain unopened in mints original government package. This is per PCGS & NGC website.

  8. Sith says

Leaving the coin in the mailing package for grading is only true for the label chasers. I never understood how pedigree labels add value, or in some cases are more valuable than the coins themselves but…

    Per NGC

If you would like the Certificate of Authenticity number to be printed on the NGC label, the coin must be received in the sealed US Mint shipping box

    Per PCGS
Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) will begin encapsulating United States Mint serialized Certificates of Authenticity (COA) alongside the coins they guarantee. The service will also provide a pedigree on the coin insert with the matching serial number…Ensuring the integrity of this program, dual encapsulation services are available only for submissions of sealed boxes from the U.S. Mint to prevent the inadvertent and incorrect dual encapsulation of non-matching reverse proof silver eagles and COA now or at any time in the future.

    The 4 “uns”…

I would had “unworthit” and “unvaluable”

PCGS Announces Exclusive Partnership With APMEX to Offer New Bullion Firststrike® Service For 2020

Professional Coin Grading Service has partnered with APMEX, the largest online retailer of precious metals, to offer an exciting new product geared toward bullion enthusiasts beginning in 2020. It combines APMEX’s popular MintDirect® products with the desirable PCGS FirstStrike® eligibility.

Now select APMEX coins can qualify for PCGS FirstStrike designation long after the intial eligibility deadline.

  10. Donnie says

It became available again this morning (Saturday) at 7:30 E.T. —one minute later it reverted back to unavailable.

  11. CaliSkier says

Less than a few seconds the coin was available. On a whim I went ahead and set my alarm was logged on! Sure enough, I refresh and low and behold the “add to bag” comes up! I add to bag, immediately go to check out populate the necessary files add my CVC code and place order and bam! “SORRY THIS ITEM IS NOT AVAILABLE”!!!
In my cart, place order and another “F” “U”” ! Me no Likey!

I had been refreshing, when around 7:34 they popped up, for any trying to play the game? Now much of a game when the odds are stacked in the houses favor!

  12. Doug says

I’m sure with everyone posting here that they are available everyone is setting there alarm. Yes I saw it to and was playing the game. Mine is already in my cart so I can skip that step. My credit card worked this time with the one on file actually the one on file but still have to enter CVV code and just as I pressed the confirmed button it said I had invalid product again. It was less than 40 seconds! Lets all try again tomorrow morning 🙂

  13. CaliSkier says

At least I didn’t suffer and it was over in 30 seconds instead of 17 minutes like the other day! Still bummed that I had in my cart & was unable to purchase either time! At least I can confirm that having something in your basket means “absolutely” nothing!

I do remember seeing on “Impractical Jokers” once, where they’re in a grocery store and shop and fill their baskets w/ items, other shoppers have placed into their own shopping baskets! That was amusing, this is NOT!

Point being, inside a grocery store there is plenty of other items to select or purchase your fav’s, much like the mint? However when “one” takes your filet mignon and replaces with generic hotdogs, they just don’t taste the same and makes you lose your appetite!

  14. HarryB says

Well…..I tried again this morning, after receiving the “oops” message continually Thursday at noon. Between the time I accepted t&c and pushed next button this morning, error message appeared saying the item I selected is no longer available. I can certainly live without this offering, as I ponder how to dispose of my modern Mint collection of silver coinage. I quit buying in 2015 as I observed the trend of modern mint silver numismatic offerings being worth spot soon after issuance. I have transitioned my collecting interests to pre 33 gold, but I have kept my First Spouse set and gold sets like my 2008 Buffalo 4 piece sets. As a retired Federal employee, never have I seen a better candidate for an Office of Inspector General thorough investigation of the US Mint’s entire numismatic program. The Mints entire program begs for a thorough proctologist’s examination of marketing decisions and sales practices. The Mint missed several golden opportunities with this release to maximize revenue, like paring this coin with gold items, similar to the 95 offering which gave us the 95W ASE, or setting up an auction for the 30,000 pieces, cutting out profits for flippers and eBay. I would like the Treasury OIG to engage in a hope of the Mint starting a gold bullion direct program like the Royal Mint runs. The Mint, and thus the American taxpayers could benefit substantially from a different marketing approach.

  15. Sherril says

I had one in my cart and when I hit order it said invalid item in cart!!!!!!!!!!!!It was only 30 seconds……………….If there was any someone knew how to get them in less than 30 seconds

  16. Donnie says

As the Mint weeds out over-the-household limit on orders, more of these coins should become available next week. Yeah, you people on mountain or pacific time will lose some sleep, but keep trying. It sure beats the alternative of spending $600.+ on the secondary market.

  17. rapt0r says

I can only imagine the posts if this offering had been auctioned off by the mint! MNB would have been popping up Oops errors so many people would have been on here venting. Win or lose allot of people played the game and asked other non collectors to help them play it. 3 out of the five people I had trying to order have asked me more about coin collecting since, then ever before. Not sure that transitions into future collectors but for know there is interest where no interest was before.

  18. cagcrisp says

@HarryB says,” I have transitioned my collecting interests to pre 33 gold”

    Agree 100%

“a hope of the Mint starting a gold bullion direct program like the Royal Mint runs. The Mint, and thus the American taxpayers could benefit substantially from a different marketing approach.”

    Agree 100%

That’s the Possibility the Mint was hoping for…

  20. Larry says

    It’s gone. Deal with it.
Meanwhile, on the ‘Bay closed orders for OGP advanced sales from folks with confirmed orders are running about $650.00 I know that is a tough pill to swallow, 10X the mint’s price, but perhaps still a bargain?
Obviously a long way from the 1995 W.
At $650, it seems like a good investment. I can’t see it going down from that.
I tried to buy the 1995 W a couple times at shows. Both times the owner would only sell the complete set with the gold coins for way over my budget at the time. I have seen them on Ebay, but I will never spend that much on Ebay.
That is one reason the 95W coin sells for what it does. I doubt if this one will ever get there, but I can see it being a $1000.00 coin in OGP in the near future.
I know a lot of you are upset because you didn’t get the coin at the mint’s price. But thinking with your brain instead of your heart, in the future you may never see this coin for $650. So if you want one, it still may be a good time to get one.
The 95W sells for around $3000 in MS69. MS70 coins are ridiculous, over $10,000. This coin will be rarer. Maybe not in MS70, but overall, still rarer.
I guess I am trying to convince myself to buy one the hard way. Need some of Cag’s excellent wisdom!

  21. Donnie says

    Cag,

Please help me understand: On the one hand you were denigrating the Mint’s offering this “gimmick” coin. On the other hand, you admit to recruiting friends to give you an advantage in your attempt to obtain said “gimmick” coin.
And then you try to put a positive spin on this by saying you may have added a few future coin collectors.

  22. Donnie says

    Larry,

Do you really think the now prevailing average eBay price of $650. is actually a bargain? This is perhaps the worse time to buy this coin in ungraded, original government packaging off eBay, as many buyers are impulsively buying on the rebound to alleviate their disappointment of being shut out on Thursday.

  23. Buzz Killington says

The only problem I have with the Mint’s marketing strategy for this ASE rarity is the pricing.

Why not price them at $150 or $200, based on a series-low-mintage of 30,000?

They would have sold out equally fast.

A worthwhile experiment would be cutting back the number of issues, lowering the mintage to sub-demand levels, and raising the price. Like having a yearly lottery.

  24. Brad says

Gamblers may not mind paying $650 for a sealed box, on the chance they may snag one of those hand-signed COA’s. A gimmick for sure, but it will certainly be worth considerably more than $650 in the short-term. And, I too believe there is still more room for short-term appreciation on this coin, up to $1,000-$1,200 before it starts to fall. I could be wrong of course, but I’ve been playing this game since 2006 and have seen a lot of these type of offerings play out. It will be interesting to watch.

  25. cagcrisp says

@Donnie says,”On the one hand you were denigrating the Mint’s offering this “gimmick” coin.”

    1. You’ve NEVER seen a post where I’ve denigrated the 2019 Enhanced Reverse Proof coin with a mintage of 30,000.

“On the other hand, you admit to recruiting friends to give you an advantage in your attempt to obtain said “gimmick” coin.”

    2. You’ve NEVER seen me post that I’ve recruited friends to buy ANY coin. I’ve used friends and family accounts, however, ever one of those accounts have only been accessed by me.

“And then you try to put a positive spin on this by saying you may have added a few future coin collectors.”

    3. It’s Not a spin. It’s a Fact. the question is will the Mint Lose more customers than they Gain…

  26. Dustyroads says

HarryB, Same here. It was available for about 15 seconds. I had to click on my mailing address before the CC info could be chosen and autofilled. That slowed me down just enough to find the same massage you found. Next time a stroll through the ordering process (prior to ordering) with an item I don’t intend to buy should help.

  27. Donnie says

    Cag,

    My rebuttal:
The following is a direct quote you made on 11/1219 @ 12:56 in MNB:
“Higher and higher prices, more and more gimmicks, and fewer and fewer customers.” I recall that you’ve also mentioned that lower and lower mintages will become the norm.

You seem to have made an exception for this 30,000 mintage, special finish coin. Yes, you are not on record as trashing this particular coin offering . But does it not fit your definition of a gimmicky Mint product?

Isn’t using your family and friends accounts essentially the same as having them go on the Mint’s website in an attempt to buy the coin on your behalf? I will say this: You must be a very trustworthy person for your close ones to share their account information with you, which would include credit card info. From past posts on your part, you do seem like a generous individual, giving coins as gifts to family and friends.

  28. cagcrisp says

“I recall that you’ve also mentioned that lower and lower mintages will become the norm.”

    3. No

“Isn’t using your family and friends accounts essentially the same as having them go on the Mint’s website in an attempt to buy the coin on your behalf? ”

    4. It is buying the coin on THEIR behalf, not mine. They get the coin. I write them a check for100% of the costs and they keep the coin.

“I will say this: You must be a very trustworthy person for your close ones to share their account information with you, which would include credit card info.”

    5. I hate to count all the 401k accounts, 402b accounts, deferred compensation accounts, Roth IRA accounts, traditional IRA accounts and taxable accounts that I manage 100% of their money including Some that I file applicable state and federal income taxes…

  29. cagcrisp says

I will Re-post what I Thought One Mont Ago about the 2019 Enhanced Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle when it was announced:

    • cagcrisp says
    October 12, 2019 at 8:09 am

@ Buzz Killington says,”@Cag, I’m wondering, what do you think the reason the USM did this? I have my own opinion about it, but what is the rationale for creating a new low mintage ASE?”

IF you have no viable secondary market you will Eventually have no viable primary market.

The Mint has No viable primary market on either the numismatic or bullion side.

    The Mint is hemorrhaging customers.

The Mint is hemorrhaging profits on the numismatic side.

Net Income numismatic side FY2015 = $40.8 million.

Net Income numismatic side FY2018 = ($21.2) million.

The demographics for a “collector” base is diminishing year after year.

The Possibility for a Secondary market pricing is Unlimited.

Look at Current market cap of cryptocurrencies of $225.4 Billion and compare that to primary numismatic sales from the US Mint for FY2018 of $293.1 Million.

    Billions vs. Millions.

In CY2019 we will have the Lowest Gold Bullion sales for the AGE since inception in 1986.

In CY2019 we will have the Lowest Gold Bullion sales for the Buffalo since inception in 2006.

In CY2019 we will have the 2nd Lowest Silver Bullion sales for the ASE in the past 12 years.

In CY2011we had 39,868,500 ASE Bullion coins Sold when the Average Spot price of Silver was $35.11.

In CY2019 we will be Lucky to sell Half that many ASE Bullion coins at Half that price.

It’s all about Secondary market pricing and the Possibility of Secondary market pricing.

The Mint is creating a Modern Low Mintage numismatic American Silver Eagle with a stated mintage of 30k because they want Secondary market pricing.

That is the ONLY Hope the United States Mint has to stop the hemorrhaging of customers.

IF you Stop the hemorrhaging of customers, you have a Chance of Stopping the hemorrhaging of profits…

  30. Theofie says

Managed to get my hands on 2 of the eagles sending them to N.G.C. for grading keeping one then hoping to use the other in January at the coin show in orlando to barter some type of deal to get a 1995-W to finish off my set.

  31. samuel says

I am just curious, if you asked your friend to buy this coin for you, and later they found out this coin is sold at 600+ at eBay and you only paid them the mint list price, what they would think.

  32. Donnie says

Having low mintage offerings of a desirable Mint coin product will accomplish at least four things: 1) create a feeding frenzy when the coin or coin Set becomes available online, 2). attract speculators and flippers who are just in it for the profit, 3) piss off the Mint’s customer base who were unable to make a purchase, and 4) create a vibrant secondary market.

Three out of four of these are not good things.

  33. cagcrisp says

Fiscal Year 2019 for the United States Mint ended September 30, 2019.

The Federal Register notice for the 2019 Enhanced Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle came out on October 8, 2019.

Close out one year, see how bad thing are, and Try Something Different…

  34. cagcrisp says

On the Bullion side of the United States Mint…

For the month of November 2018, the United States Mint Sold 1,645,000 oz. of the Bullion American Silver Eagle.

Half way through November 2019, the United States Mint has Sold 230,000 oz. of the Bullion American Silver Eagle.

The United States Mint is hemorrhaging customers.

Without Secondary market pricing, the United States Mint has No Chance…

  35. Nick says

Today I notise one more thing – the Mints reminder system is not working too.
Yesterday i entered my email so the USM can “Remind me” when the coin is available for sale.
Question to the Mint representatives – Why nobody sent me an email when the coin was available for sale today?

  36. IJTR says

My suspicion about those friends and neighbors asking about collecting is because this experience was a get rich quick scheme. Not at all what numismatics should be. Of course we would like our acquisitions to hold or increase in value over time, but it should be about stuff you like, not stuff to repackage and flip.

Those fiends and neighbors should invest in sure things like corn futures, Longaberger baskets, or maybe Dutch tulip bulbs and beanie babies.

  37. KC&SO says

    KML in KY says

“I would be curious to know how many of the eBay presales sold before the 14th had to be refunded because the sellers could not get the coins.”

I’m heard or observed a fair amount have canx’ed their order.., or they are cancelling saying they didn’t get an order placed upon seeing eBay sells of $500 – $650.

I still am of the opinion that the COA will be a one of the several game changers for this release. While I think the notion in absurdly silly, am I taking to ‘wait and see’ attitude toward how this plays out. I personally believe that many of these Pre-sellers are going to wish they had slowed their roll in off loading their purchase, without first check the goods inside. Besides, what it there’s an Error Coin in the mix…???

Again, let me say that, ” Besides, what it there’s an Error Coin in the mix…???” Doahhh!

Would like hear how you have or are offloading your Moderns with the new tax policy in place and generally crapping ebay service for sellers now.

Good luck in KY.., I still have a few sealed boxes of those $1 BHoF Proofs at my folks in Louisville.., they’ll be hitting the market post-December. Boy that was a Big Mistake holding on to those.., Oh well.., live & learn

  38. KC&SO says

    @ HarryB

Should you ever want to divest that 4-coin set, keep in mind. I travel to Huntsville from time to time and recall that to be around your ‘hood. While I’m kaput with Moderns, I do want the 4 coin PRF & UNC, and know your set would be pristine. I would pay $ for a fair price (Apmex-like jacked retail) and still have my Gov’t clearances, so you know it would be a clean crisp transaction. Thanks for your consideration.

  39. KC&SO says

Upon reading the previous thread, it appears that these highly popular release really brings out the UGLY in some people.., as well as the obliviously clueless.

Some of you all need to check yourself with a dose of humility.

    To quote Cag.., “SAD”

  40. Anthony says

@Cagcrisp… It will be very interesting to see if the sugar high remains after 6 to 12 months on the 2019 S ERP.
Overall I think the net effect will be for more genuine collectors of U.S. Mint products to quit or curb their purchases rather than chase after contrived and artificial modern rarities that can only be had at secondary market prices exceeding their budgets.

Short term, I think the Mint will gain some residual benefit from this offering but that benefit is certain to not include building their customer base. Each new successive trinkety gimmick will require lower and lower mintages to create the needed buyer sugar rush and each one of the offerings will gain new pissed off collectors that will be shed from the Mint’s collector base.

  41. IJTR says

Back in 2011 there was such blowback about pre-sales that web sites required a photo of the actual in hand coin with evidence of the seller’s vendor ID in the photo. So many had been fraudulently using stock government photos.

Suspect that there will be a lot of similar fraud this time around.

It is also typical for mint vendor website not to use the remind me feature on hot items. You would think that from past bad experiences that would have been fixed too, but NOT.

Such things constitute the definition of insanity.

  42. KC&SO says

While I don’t pretend to have all the answers, and to your subjective opinion above, my opinion is that you are Grossly Wrong.

This release is so 180 out from anything we have ever seen before, that there is no fundamental rationale for even applying past release experiences or stereotypes to this one.

I think you’re really failing to see how this is so different, apple to spam different to anything Modern before. You’re not alone, in ready the comments previously, there’s others are not seeing this could potential play out.

We’re in the 1st Inning.., of a 9 Inning ball game…, there’s gonna be some twists and surprises on this one, that’s we’re my money is at, just like on my National Series Champs Nats! Catch any of those game?…, twist and surprise, huh?

That’s Like saying “I’m So Pissed and I’m So Disappointed that I missed a coin for $65.99 that I’m going on eBay and paying $650.00 for the same coin. Take That United States Mint!!!!!”

  48. Donnie says

    KC&SO,
Thank you. Do you think I could use your rationale to justify to my wife spending $650. for a coin that went for $70. a couple days ago?

    Cag,
If you were successful in ordering one of the silver eagles on a friend’s account, did you mean to say that you would buy the coin for that person? I assume your friends also happen to be financial clients of yours and this would be a business gift. Correct? If so, that’s generous on your part.

  49. KC&SO says

    Check out CNBC now –

A complete set of 31 ASE’s from 1986 to 2016 of NGC MS69 BU’s for the bargain price of ONLY TWO payments of $997.50 +S&H.

Don’t miss this opportunity to have a lifetime collection!

Criminal.., these @$$ Clowns should be accosted. And the lies just continue by the minute….

    Nope.

    I meant what I said.

    I Don’t Care,

I Don’t Care about your situation, your perception, what you’re wife should do or doesn’t do, or what raionale you believe or think that SHOULD BE applied to the release.

My rationale is quite simple – unless you have some magic crystal ball, you’re apply your situation or perception to something you know NO idea how this is going to play out and this release if COMPLETELY different than anything we as Modern collectors have, and likely will ever, see (again).

Take a chill pill and go make $650 worth of good memories today.., or buy 31 ASE’s from Rick on CNBC.

If you do have a crystal ball, I would greatly appreciate insight into the next publicly traded Oncology BioTech that will be have highly positive trial results, I want a big boat. Thank You.

If USMint ussue the Morgan and Peace dollars in 2021 there will be a storm at least 10x times stronger that will hit their website.
    This will be something special.
As we know the Morgan dollar and the penny are the most collected US coins.
I hope they will be ready by then.

  53. cagcrisp says

@ Nick says,”If USMint ussue the Morgan and Peace dollars in 2021 there will be a storm at least 10x times stronger that will hit their website.”

Good News is that there will be 100k Less now that so many are Pissed…

  54. John Moore says

Found a 1878 gsa today.Looks like it might grade 64 or better. This was money well spent.I well.stay with the pre 1933 coins.Mint will eventually lose my business after the park quarters.

  55. Erik H says

Since some here are talking pre-1933 coins. APMEX has random date NGC-MS62 Saints priced cheaper than the NGC MS-61 & MS60 coins. They’re also offering a PCGS “Prospector” label coin (no grade BU) for a little more than JM Bullion/Provident Metal are selling them for raw.

Like other people here, I can’t wait to watch how this play out. As a type collector, I already have this year’s “W” enhanced ASE. Did I “want” to add the “S” at mint retail price? YES. Do I “need” to add “S” at the new inflated price? Nope!

Could the coin price go to $1,000? Somebody paid $935.25 for a PCGS PR70 Reverse Proof Ike in September on eBay so anything is possible. I sold a few Truman sets & Hawaii 5 oz at good profit but my sales price was still below peak because I under estimated demand. $650 might be a good price after all. Time will tell.

Cagcrisp, although the prices for raw Truman & Ike sets are all over the place current prices are a lot closer than before (as I predict here). A few Ike sets actually sold for more than the some Truman sets (most Truman sets have sold for more). I don’t know if you remember me debating you about the long term price being closer. I think I may have even used the 5 year mark.

  56. Erik H says

I might add whoever gets COA 00001, 00777, 08888 etc. they will definitely be the big “Mint Lotto” winners! (Especially if graded 70)

  57. Nick says

    @ cagcrisp says

“Good News is that there will be 100k Less now that so many are Pissed…”

You know that all of them will be there, even more.

This coin is a great example.
Now you have 2 options- buy it (or try) from the Mint for $65 or buy it on the secondary market for $650.
Without the Mint your only option will be the secondary market.

I got pissed on the Mint many times. Back in the years I even deleted all my info and also deleted my account. I don’t remember for how long I didn’t have account.
After that I opened a new one. Year ago they pissed me off again. I deleted al my info again-cc, addresses and left the account to delete it on the next day. I don’t know why but I left it this time.

So all the guys that are pissed off today will feel better day after day and probably forget after few weeks/months.

Most of them say they have more than 90% success with the orders.
Also they can’t change themselves. If you are collecting from 5-10-20-50 years you can’t just stop.
This is part of your life.

So be sure that they will be there trying to get those coins. And also they will be posting comments here.

Two options is better than one.

  58. Donnie says

The 2011 25th anniversary 5 coin American Silver Set generated far more MNB comments than has this 2019 ASE. The 2011 Set was issued at $299. with an order limit of 5 Sets.

It was available for about 4 1/2 before being sold out. Due to multiple website problems a massive amount of people couldn’t place an order and were shut out.

There were hundreds of pissed customers who were unsuccessful in getting at least one Set. Many of them vented their anger here on MNB. The anger was probably even more intense than that surrounding this 2019 coin.

  59. cagcrisp says

@ Nick says,”You know that all of them will be there, even more.“

    Agree 100%

If the Mint announced Today that there would be a 2019 Enhanced Reverse Proof Silver Kennedy half with a mintage of 30,000 in December, there would be 200,000 hitting the Buy button within the first minute.

It’s amazing what a little Secondary market can do.

It can’t happen very often, but when it does, you have to make a Home Run out of it like the Mint did Thursday…

    Yep

  61. gatortreke says

KC&SO posted “Besides, what it there’s an Error Coin in the mix…???”

I joked with my coin buddy before Thursday’s sales tribulations that the USM could really create a rarity by taking one of the ERP-W mint mark dies used earlier this year and repunching it with an S so the original W is still visible. Do this with just one die and whatever number of coins produced by that die would be worth untold amounts of dollars.

  62. neblackshirts says

With the requirement of shipping the sealed mint box to NGC or PCGS for grading to have the COA number added to the label, what do you think the odds are that if you were lucky enough to have received a very low COA number or a signed COA that you would get it back and it not go to an employee or a large coin dealer? In other words would you look first and forget the label number or would you trust them? Obviously the sender will never know what COA number he/she actually sent them. I find myself not trusting them at all.

  63. Nick says

“Buy the coin not the slab.”

I will never send them unopened package.

With the unopened boxes they can just have somebody to put the coins into the slabs.
They will be sure the coins are real.

Is in it part of their job to verify that the coin is fake or not?

    I like the Mints OGP.
And also if you get grade less than 70 it won’t be a big difference.

  64. Booya says

My opinion the mint accomplished exactly what has happened. I expect more lower mintages going forward, some will be announced and probably some not announced. Keep your eyes and ears open going forward.

Now that so many have quit or left buying from the mint better odds for you and me.

  65. Donnie says

Here is my suggestion for the Mint’s next 30,000 or so mintage of whatever sought -after collector coin: The Mint, through its website and other ways, should advertise the upcoming special, low mintage offering.

No specific date and time should be given as to when the offering will be available for sale. Rather, customers would be directed to check the Mint website during a specified time frame. For example: “This offering will be available during the week of April 7-14. Check for availability.”

This will accomplish two objectives: 1) Mint customers will be encouraged to visit the website on a regular basis, and 2) the initial ordering surge will be greatly lessened, hopefully preventing the website problems that occurred on Thursday.

The coin product should go on sale to accommodate customers in all U.S. time zones, such as mid -afternoon or early evening ET.

Of course, word will quickly get out and a sellout (or currently unavailable) will occur relatively quickly.

  66. CaliSkier says

Not sure how I pulled off the unthinkable this morning!!!! I feel bad, again fort hose collectors so far unable to secure one from the mint. Again set my clock for 4:25 Cali/PST, logged on, and wait for it???
Around 4:38/7:38, after my(iPhone) screen went wacky(1/2 size), sure enough while reloading coin page, it popped up! Put into my cart and Son of a gun, I couldn’t access the top of page where the bag showed 1! YIKES, grrr! I tried shrinking/enlarging screen then kept trying to pull the screen down further to hold and try to trap “bag” icon. Somehow, after fumbling the “add to bag was still up? I clicked add to bag then had 2 in my cart, however the “checkout” icon came up and was able to get to checkout. Phone screen still jacked, however having done as others mentioned, I’d gone through a few dry(practice runs) to familiarize my self w/all the boxes and potential hang ups w/address/card/billing, cvc, etc, thankfully! I’m still in awe that somehow, some way, I managed to pull off a 4th quarter come from behind victory! The play is still under review though? I managed to receive an acknowledgment @ 7:40 EST, so now in processing mode, order number 7423xxx! Just received confirmation @ 7:55!!!!

Sorry to all, however my victory is bittersweet. Perhaps my flash of what I’d do with multiples if I was able to magically procure 20 plus of this issue? I had an id idea of offering them up at face to MNB peeps! I’m still in disbelief! I’d read for many years, how readers would get online at a certain time to try and p/up the few coins that trickle out daily? Yesterday was my first dawn patrol effort, had it in bag, no luck. Today, again, not sure how, why, I made it through the process! Good Luck all!

PS Yes I’m one of the whiners, Puhlease, pass the “cheese”!

  67. KC&SO says

    @ gatortreke –

Yes Sir, good point.., you know as you reflect on the many of these high visibility releases over the past 10 or so years.., many have taken on their own form in unique ways. Whether it was the way it sold out, shipped out, packaging errors, lack of packaging, rim ‘defects,’ surprise finishes by the mint, strong secondary market, lack of secondary market, many collectors getting what they want or not, and so on…

Though when one thinks about it, all these releases are different in their own way.

Here’s some random thoughts on how this could play out. I don’t post this to blow smoke or get anyone overly excited to what to expect, though what is in the realm of the possible:

    – Your W repunch example
    – A strike through (San Fran doesn’t have a perfect track record)
    – A Proof-like RP Enhanced
    – A true error of some sort we haven’t seen on ASE before, this is 30,000 with a unique die
    – Have they struck all 30,000?
    – Do they have packaging for all in place for 30,000?
    – How were the first 100 COA’s distributed?
    – Where are the first 10 COA’s?
    – Does this take the form of the BHoF release with an extend delay in shipping?
    – What value is placed on COA # 30,000, 12321, 1986, 2019, 666, 777, and so on?
    – What if dealers did not get any where near the numbers they wanted and start buying more from the secondary like in May of 2014 with the $5 BHoFs when they went to $1,200 raw and $1,900 for a 70?

Just some random thoughts, I’m sure yo all can think of some possibilities. This will be fun to watch play out over the next 60 days.

I wish this coin was struck in ‘D’ as we’d never know what to expect over the next 60 days and what might show up! haha

    1. It would accomplish an unproductive society to become more unproductive as more and more people would waste their time on an elusive endeavor. I’ve read where people took off work to Try to get a coin on Thursday. Should people take off an entire week to get a coin?

    2. It would allow those on the Inside to contact Friends and Family to line up at the appropriate date and time because those on the Inside know the correct date and time and wouldn’t waste their time.

I wish the USM had gotten the memo for the release of the 2016 Gold Centennials.

The Walker and Standing release is a perfect example of botching a home run opportunity, IMO.

Even Wal-Mart offers them now –

    U.S. Mint
2016-W 1/10 oz Gold Mercury Dime Centennial (w/OGP)
    $268.03

    It released for $215, right?

  71. CaliSkier says

Uggh, doh, not sure if their system jacked me or my own phone, when my screen went wacky? My confirmation is for the S LE Au set? Quite a let down……again….. luckily my brother called after my post and text to him. I recalled seeing an amount on the confirmation $149 something or other and while talking to him checked and uggggh a product I didn’t want is what’s their! SO STILL No Luck for me? The other thought I had was what if a few of these coins ended up being sold as a normal S PF ASE? Well I guess I may try again tomorrow???

  72. CaliSkier says

Well just cancelled my order via call to the mint. Ho hum…. Nice to feel proportionally less disappointed, with each passed purchase opportunity! From what I gather from sales rep I spoke with, they’ve been getting slaughtered with Nasty phone calls from disgruntled customers!!!

  73. Donnie says

    Cag,

As predicted, our favorite MNB quasi moderator/ website policeman followed up . Yeah, it will really make people check their phones more frequently to check for availability- as if they don’t check the enough already.

In the three days air traffic was grounded after 9/11, the temperature range increased 2 degrees C and decreasing global warming for half a week.

Clouds Caused By Aircraft Exhaust May Warm The U.S. Climate

NASA scientists have found that cirrus clouds, formed by contrails from aircraft engine exhaust, are capable of increasing average surface temperatures enough to account for a warming trend in the United States that occurred between 1975 and 1994.

  75. just another dave in pa says

While I have no doubt that air travel (space travel even more) contributes to temps, a one week window is not very informative.

Climate occurs on a geologic scale and therefore cannot be measured in small intervals.

The blurring of weather and climate has caused much confusion.

It seems deliberate, much like the political blurring of lines in order to effect political and social change.

A short-term ( a few decades) trend doesn’t reveal much but it has proven useful as a scare tactic.

    Fear not.

or Fear everything. Trump, the climate, collapse, crime, etc…

when Roosevelt said “there is nothing to fear but fear itself” he understood that a fearful populace was easily cowed intro submission.

Nothing is as it seems. If you believe (have faith) in things that you don’t understand, you will suffer. – Stevie W

… or just watch more tv and get the narrative you want to hear.

When you control scientific research (funding, it’s all about the funding) it should come as no surprise that the results are frighteningly dire.

The NASA article says that exhaust “MAY” warm the climate but this is taken as an article of faith while factual data is not clear. Anything “MAY” be true but this is just more of the perpetual fear mongering.

This is not scientific research. This is a political narrative with 4 out of 5 dentists agreeing that Crest toothpaste is the one. Science has long been used to market products and ideas.

It’s why Trump is an existential threat (even though he’s been about the same as Obama) and Russia has once again regained its status as the Red Menace.

  76. IJTR says

Mint says 99,000 were on line and 4700 on the phone at launch. Average number of page refreshes by internet buyers more than 10-15 to get through.

Assuming about half of the potential buyers were non-collectors trying to buy for their employer or someone else, this finally tells us the sad truth, that the number of serious collectors is under 50,000. Many of those spurred into action by dreams of greed and get rich quick schemes.

John Moore I am with you, a Morgan GSA is a better collector purchase today relative to anything offered in current products.

  77. Anthony says

In a recent article of Numismatic News it was reported: “At the Mint’s Numismatic Forum held in Philadelphia in October, Mint Director Ryder predicted sales of 90,000 for the five-ounce silver dollar.”

Certainly begs the question, what is the basis for his prediction? Given the pace of sales, 70K final mintage will be tough enough to achieve! when he makes his inane predictions I think he is only in love with the sound of his own voice

Before the January launch of the Apollo coins, Ryder predicted the 5 oz. silver Apollo would “sell out in 10 minutes”. How he could EVER make that prediction without taking into account all of the production hurdles the Mint was experiencing just to have only as many as 60K ready for sale is beyond me!

If the Mint had 90-95K ready to sell on day one they WOULD have a sell-out early on and perhaps have a positive secondary market pricing. Yet another Mint scheduling botch!

  78. Anthony says

@IJTR… I happen to think that far more speculators than real collectors were online for the coin. Mint Director Ryder has stated that the Mint’s customer base is “below 500,000”.

I would say that it is more like 100,000 and only a percentage of that number might be considered as collectors (i.e.: the “ultimate” consumer.)

Throwing this offering out at the end of the year is only to provide a little bit of black ink on a generally red ink sales report for the calendar year.

  79. So Krates says

just another dave says, “The NASA article says that exhaust “MAY” warm the climate but this is taken as an article of faith while factual data is not clear. Anything “MAY” be true but this is just more of the perpetual fear mongering.

I’m not sure you read the link

It is a 2004 NASA article describing a study. They used 25 years of global surface observations of cirrus clouds, temperature and humidity records from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis dataset. They confirmed the cirrus trends with 13 years of satellite data from NASA’s International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project. Read the actual study before comparing it to paid toothpaste studies. The point was air traffic causes contrails which cause cirrus clouds which causes a reduction in the ground and lower atmospheric temperature RANGE. While these man made cirrus clouds actually lower the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface during the day, they trap heat from escaping at night. The range is reduced and the net effect is slight rise in overall temp.

Seven years later this effect was observed during the three day grounding. The lack of contrail caused cirrus clouds caused an increase in the temp RANGE by 2 degrees.

The recommendation is for aircraft to cruise lower causing less contrails. This would INCREASE full consumption due to lower efficiency (thicker air/more resistance at lower altitudes) but cause a net decrease in overall global warming.

Following that specific recommendation to decrease global warming would actually be beneficial for the oil and jet fuel refining business

  80. Dustyroads says

CaliSkier, Not sure how you did that. I too tried again this morning. Started refreshing early, lingered and continued refreshing for about 20 minutes. Never saw a coin available. Anyway, glad to hear you pulled off the impossible.

  81. CaliSkier says

@ Dusty, I followed my post w/my latest woe! No luck! When my screen went miniature, I started fumbling? There’s a chance I errantly clicked on the wrong item and didn’t recognize until completing the process. At one point I had 2 in the cart! Just not sure if that was 1 S ERP ASE and 1 LE Au PF SET or 2 S ERP ASE. I edited from quantity down to 1, then hurriedly checked out! I never got an unavailable item, so I assumed it took my edit to 1 and placed my order. So either I never had any ever in my cart or it went unavailable on my edit to 1 and left the other item in cart??? Not sure either way, no luck.

I too was well aware this coins availability and tha attempts to get one would be wracked w/the chaos that the vast majority experienced on Thursday! Doesn’t mean I have to like it or be ok with how this played out! Again, a little cheese w/my “whine” thanks!

Friday was the really only opportunity to snag the coin at the 7:30 am ET. There were several posters on another coin blog who said they successfully placed an order. The ordering window lasted about 3 minutes.

Yesterday, the coin apparently became available again at 7:30 and the window closed at 7:31. Nobody who posted on MNB or the other coin blog site was successful in completing the ordering process.

Today at 7:30 am, the coin remained unavailable. Being Sunday, that could be expected.

As Booya said, in the previous comment, just let the dust settle. I would expect that this coming week may present some 7:30 am ordering opportunities.

Hold off buying the coin on eBay , which is now trending at about $700, until you give it your best shot at getting it for $70. It is still possible to do so.

This thing about people snagging this coin at 7:30, seems like an urban myth to me. Not sure I believe the stories. Why would the mint mystically open the ordering window at 7:30 of all times, when they ALWAYS open it at 12:00 as far as I have ever seen.
I remember when the left over gold Mercury coins were put up for sale the mint let everyone know. So why the cloak and daggers with this coin?
Seems I remember the same stories with the IKE Coins and Chronicles set. I tried to log in at exactly 7:30 and NEVER saw any coins for sale. Maybe it’s just me, but all this seems strange.
If the mint ever comes out and says they really do this, then I will believe it.

If our species were capable of slowing down, and not keeping busy with something or other, coin collecting wouldn’t even be a thing.

I do have a tremendous amount of sympathy with the idea that the way natural selection has made our species might lead us exactly into a blind alley. Kurt Vonnegut’s book _Galapagos_ explored exactly this point.

I used to believe that some day our species would wise up. I’m much less sure of that these days. But life goes on, with a lot more individuals in our species believing they need a take a plane trip somewhere or other.

I don’t like to get on planes very much, but I would absolutely get this coin shipped to me, and I would arrange to sell it, and ship it somewhere else, so a few numbers on my back account page would go higher, none of which will ever affect my life in a tangible way.

Larry, until yesterday I thought the same thing! If I hadn’t seen and experienced it myself, I wouldn’t believe it either! Make sure you’re logged on by 7:25 EST. Then chose how you want to refresh, reload go back a screen, etc. Make sure to be on the item page at 7:30! Then sometime in the next few seconds to minute(7-10) max(?) continue refreshing and be ready when or if the red “add to bag” button replaces the blue “Remind Me” button! Then as quickly as possible if in your bag, get to the checkout screen and “ABSOLUTELY make NO mistakes, as there will be zero time for any type of correction! Lastly, since I mentioned had I somehow had access to multiple coins I would have made them available to MNB peeps at cost, I’ll give more info.

So my last tip is, Do NOT miss that tiny little box that you have to check at the bottom left re:the mints terms of use which comes up on the final review page. If you forget to check you’ll be taken back until you do and you WILL be too late/miss out! Pretty sure that contributed to my missing out on Thursday? The odds of getting one this way are slim, however it can’t hurt to try? Sometime between 7:30-7:35ish or so, no telling. One good thing is, when and if you’re able to get it to your cart you’ll know way before the 15-17 minutes most suffered through on Thursday! By probably 7:38-7:40 at the latest the window will have opened and closed! Good luck!

    …and so it goes.

Sorry, I did not read the article but alarmist headline hyperbole is just neurotic. The US has become a neurotic teenager for some reason. It may be related to contrails.

I tried to post a link to the Scientific American blog on Steven Pinker but that didn’t work so well.

Fear and anxieties are easily created and manipulated skillfully by politicians and ad men. They both use the media to reach a wide audience.

And thank you Buzz for your realistic view.

I’m reluctant to comment on the heels of Cali, as there are evidently a couple readers here who still think we are one and the same. Cali is on Pacific Time, meaning he has to disrupt his sleep, sign on to the Mint website at 4:25 a.m., and hope for the best. And of course there is no certainty the coin will become available. But one has to keep trying day to day.

I am an east coast guy, so signing on at 7:25 a.m. will not mess up my sleep. Yes, make sure when checking out that you click on the box agreeing to the Mint’s terms. If you fail to execute this easily overlooked step you’re toast. The ordering window is very short

  96. Donnie says

It’s a sobering thought, but we now have to be concerned that the shipments of the coins end up in the hands of the intended recipients. When word gets out on the street on how valuable the coins are strange things can happen.

  97. Sherril says

There has been 2700 sold on ebay and another 522 still for sale plus others in different categories so that is over 10% of what was made?????????

  98. CaliSkier says

Thanks Dusty for the suggestion, however my cell phone is my computer. I’ve been needing to p/u a new laptop, just not sure how much I need to or should spend? Like everything else the technology is moving so fast, as soon as you buy something it either quickly replaced with better, shiny, faster, bigger, etc or it freaking breaks/fails! Sorry, I know it’s reality, however I long for the days of old! I can recall my grandfathers old refrigerator, working like a champ, with no issues, needing repairs, noises, or such things. It actually kept ice cream cold and food from freezing or spoiling from inconsistent temperature fluctuations or just crappy design or workmanship! Ugggh, Charlie Brown

Ok, how about those silver presidential medals? Too bad they didn’t put a mintage limit on these. If demand was there, they could have done them again(2nd issue) with some different finish, privy or something to try and garner more interest IMO. Seemingly there appears to be quite the challenge in figuring out enough, too many, or not enough? Not to mention, when a products mintage year to year should or shouldn’t increase or decrease and by how much??? With all the technology, seems like it shouldn’t be as hard as what the mint has made it out to be? Seriously30,000 2019 R PF APdE?

Surely, they also could have kept the integrity (lowest mintage) of the W 1995 PF ASE intact and issued 35,000-50,000 max of the 2019 S ERP ASE, making more money and still selling out w/secondary market demand, still occurring? You’re right those who gobbled up the 30,000 wouldn’t be making a 10X + profit, less than a week after becoming unavailable from the mint! I’d rather the coins had ended up in strong hands to begin with vs, dealers, flippers, buying groups, middle men, who basically cornered the market!

  99. Booya says

How easy would it be to sell these and not have them? What would happen ebay just close account and ppl would be out there money.

  100. Zephin says

I received my shipping email from the Mint yesterday. I’ll let you know If I get a sign COA or not.

  101. Brad says

It makes sense none were available this morning. I’ll bet that trick only works on Tuesday through Saturday. Each weekday that the Mint works to process cancellations, any coins that were freed up from the previous day automatically become available at 7:30 am ET the following morning. Sunday and Monday have none since no one is working on Saturday and Sunday. I would wager that there will be a handful available on Tuesday morning.

  102. gatortreke says

@Brad: The Mint itself might be closed but the processing center in Memphis must have been open because my coin was marked as shipped yesterday, Sunday, 11/17. FedEx hasn’t scanned it as received yet but the shipping center was working.

An interesting side note re: FedEx SmartPost shipping. My last two purchases were shipped SmartPost but unlike previous shipments where FedEx delivered it to the USPS for final delivery, these were shipped and delivered the entire way by FedEx. That is an interesting change. The package itself had the USPS label created for it per usual but FedEx didn’t utilize them. I wonder why the change in practice?

  103. CaliSkier says

@ Sherril, I gave it 55 minutes worth of refreshing myself! Brad, I like your explanation, as it does give some of us that are still trying for a mint issued coin vs the sky rocketing secondary market! Guess I’ll give it at least 1 more try tomorrow?

  104. Rob says

The MINT made a genius move with this coin.

Look at all of the attention it garnered.

All of you that missed out and said they are done with the Mint will be back next year.

They will make 10 different ASE’s all with 30K mintage and all will sell out.

    Negative publicity is still publicity.

  105. CaliSkier says

@ Rob, it’s true some are gluttons for punishment, however that’s like saying a beat down by your dad is good! Attention, no matter what form is a good thing, no matter the pain created by such maltreatment? Just keep coming back for more? At some point each and everyone of us has a threshold and for many, that threshold has been met!!! Many customers will not be returning for another dose of punishment and disappointment IMO!

  106. Rob says

They all will be back. It is human nature. They are preying on your primal instincts.

To understand business is to understand human nature.

  107. picturefun says

Looks like a lot of people who committed to sell their coins to Pinehurst for $150 premium backed out and decided to sell theirs themselves, so forced Pinehurst to buy them from other bayers for $500-600 just to fulfill their multiple presales on bay , LOL.

  108. Larry says

Received the 2019 American Innovations proof set the other day, along with the RP Delaware coin. I really like the job the mint did on the RP coin packaging. Plus I really like all of the coins. This will make a nice affordable set.
Which is why I am not too upset about not getting one the RP ASE’s. I sold all the ones I had, I just got bored with the series.

  109. cagcrisp says

As I’ve said before the United States Mint is hemorrhaging customers and hemorrhaging profits on the numismatic side.

While Gold Bullion sales will hit ALL time Lows for both the American Gold Eagle and the American Buffalo in calendar year 2019, the Largest Gold ETF in the world (GLD) has its 15th year Birthday Today.

The GLD is Up $5.5 Billion YTD while the United States Mint is hitting All Time Lows on Gold Bullion sales.

Total Assets for GLD is ~ $44.5 Billion…

  110. Blair J Tobler says

@gatortreke – several of my Mint SmartPost shipments have been delivered by FedEx rather than USPS. Doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

  111. Anthony says

@Cagcrisp… Maybe the U.S. Mint will need to market their future bullion gold and silver products as “limited edition” products in some kind of “enhanced-something-or-other” finish?

In future years I think the Mint’s core numismatic product line will be composed of more base metal so-called “circulation” coins from which varying special limited edition variants can be conjured at-will via mint marks, privy marks, and selective finishes. (They have spun gold from straw this year with the “W” cent and “W” quarters.)

  112. Theofie says

Sending coin to N.G.C. for grading reminds me of paying atm fees.
    return mint packaging $5
    San Francisco label $10
    First release $10
add coa # to coin label $5
    encapsulate coa $10
    grading $17
    and then there is shipping?
this is always an interesting part of this whole coin collecting hurry up and wait to see what grade you get back.

  113. Collector 10538 says

    Rob says
    They all will be back.

Cag has been stating that the numismatic side has been dying a slow death (since 2011 curiously enough) and that they have been hemorrhaging customers. This leads me to conclude that customers have Already Been leaving and do Not appear to be coming back.

  114. John Q. Coinage says

Despite Rob’s belief they ALL won’t be back. This is another nail in a coffin with the MINT holding the hammer. Mint mark variations ok but this design is OLD man. I tried I lost I’m done with this, no desite to pay $400 or whatever. The sale was f’s p beyond any f’ups in the past. When the new design comes out then we’ll see who returns. The MINT has a bad business plan, they manufacture money & loose $ now on the collector side, venture a guess why… millions less customers…….huh

  115. Donnie says

    Collector 10538,

Sad to say, but many of the customers who have left and do not appear to be coming back are either incapacitated or deceased. Therefore, there is an excellent chance they’ll ever be back.

    Louis,

Is there the possibility, through your contacts, the Mint will divulge to you how many coins became available for purchase on Friday? If the Mint normally provides information on first day sales, I would think they would update with the Friday sales, as well as succeeding sales days. It’s all about transparency.

  116. smalltimecollector says

At this point why doesn’t the mint hire hsn to sell everything they make?
Playing into the hand of flippers and wrapper sellers has taken the hobby to an all time low.

  117. Buzz Killington says

    @Booya

These can be safely ordered on ebay. If a fake seller, you should be able to get your money back. But still, I’d use a credit card through PayPal.

I don’t trust these sellers selling multiples, either. But it’s a small gamble on the buyer’s side.

But I still don’t believe in buying these, @cag’s instincts notwithstanding. If I had, I would flip, and not look back, if I turned out to be wrong.

  118. John Q. Coinage says

I would pay $500 for alot of other things before I’d buy this item for that much $. Who knows, next could be a 25k mintage D RProof…… or…………….

  119. Barry says

The mint seems to be leaving money on the table by not throwing a few bones to the Denver mint. Can’t they do more than what they are doing now ? Maybe they just don’t have the equipment or expertise there.
