US Mint Product Schedule Through Year-End

Ellen WilsonThe United States Mint has recently updated their numismatic product schedule to assign release dates for upcoming products through year-end. Previously, dates had not yet been assigned for the final two First Spouse Gold Coins and related products.

During the month of December, there will be a total of nine different product release days. This makes for a relatively busy final month of the year and marks an abrupt change from the very slow months of September and October when there were just one or two product release days each month.

Collectors of the First Spouse series will see five one-half ounce gold coin releases take place in less than five weeks. Following the two previous releases on November 14 and 21, the next three releases will take place on December 2, 9, and 16.

There is at least one sign that the release schedule for the First Spouse series will be more spaced out next year. Both the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee have already reviewed the 2014 design candidates and offered their recommendations. For 2013, initial committee design reviews had not taken place until March 2013, followed by a second round of designs for some coins in April. The final design selections were not announced until August, after which point production problems were reported.

Besides the First Spouse coins and medals, other significant releases in the coming month include the 2013 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set discussed previously here and the Theodore Roosevelt Coin and Chronicles Set discussed here.

The Edith Roosevelt proof & unc. 1/2 gold coins are now not available for sale until Dec. 21. Must have been a large sale run on them. Did I miss the Black Friday morning early bird special ?

  3. Ray says

Looks like the UNC AGE could be selling out soon. Its on backorder dates 12/14/2013. here we go. we should be seeing a lot of this over the next couple of weeks. this has become the most exciting time of the year for me.

Matt, I don’t know but sometimes I’ve seen the TV people have slabbed items without a grade. I always figured it was a sweetheart deal between the third party grader and the big boys or TV specials and after the coins were cherry picked then what was left are slabbed without a grade at a greatly reduced price by the grader for the seller. There’s a gimmick here someplace? $20 an ounce silver and hot Springs in an NGC slab= a good deal at current silver prices. I think you did good.

  5. RSF says

Matt, You got a good deal relative to the original Mint issue price and an OK deal in terms of buying silver close to its melt value, but you’ve also confirmed the sad fact that there is no market or numismatic premium on these rounds.

The TPG graded this way as a marketing gimmick to make it seem better than MS-65.

  6. thePhelps says

Matt – I think fmtransmitter posted some links to the early grading – naming conventions TPG were trying to establish on the 5 ounce coins. I’d say you got that at melt and that is a pretty good deal in my opinion.

  7. says

Matt…you got a great deal…this one slipped thru the crack….the seller made a big mistake in the title of his listing by not including “5 oz silver”, so most people doing a search would not of found this coin.

As for the “Gem” grade…many of the 2010 sets were done this way by the mints Authorized Purchasers just to put them in a slab instead of selling them raw…I got a set like this from the Authorized Purchaser Jack Hunt.

I also got a set from A-Mark that was slabbed PCGS Choice BU First Strike…these were very nice coins and I sent them back to PCGS for grading a 3 of 5 came back MS69 DMPL.

The “Gem” or “Choice BU” grade on these 5 oz coins just means they are at least that good.

Here is a recent sale on ebay for the same NGC “Gem” Hot Springs % oz coin…it was an auction that started at 99 cents…sold for $162.50

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-ATB-Silver-Quarter-5oz-Hot-Springs-Gem-Uncirculated-ER-NGC-209-/121201466040?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item1c382b9ab8&nma=true&si=rfsnW%252BNf9uZPJFkS%252Fmohu5f20QU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557#ht_1585wt_1183

Another auction sold for arounf $150 (including shipping)…and these prices are much more indicative of the value of the coin you bought.

My first two P mt rushmore coins both had numerous milky spots on them. Recently received my two replacement coins. Of those one was ok but the other has a prominent gash on one of their noses so am sending that back for replacement again. Why can’t the mint have better quality control?

  9. Ray says

Got my mt Rushmore but I haven’t had time to look at it closely. Generally it is a great looking coin and one of my fav designs. I had ordered it with a PV, but quickly canceled the PV, and they still sent it via 2nd day air. I was happy about that

  10. fmtransmitter says

Seems those Rushmore bullion all have the same gash.It is square in the center of the reverse in his nose. Tiny little, hardly noticeable with naked eye, chip. Got my air tite for the 5 oz. Ordered 5 of them so 4 are empty. Hmm..

  11. fmtransmitter says

I am sad to say I have to take break from this hobby for awhile because I have been using a laptop with a burnt out bulb connected to a desktop monitor. Ugh. Not to mention when I first got it a co worker didn’t know he was supposed to stick his memory card from his Sony digital camera in a sleeve THEN put it in the card reader so shorted out my speakers, audio jack, and card reader using tweezers to retrieve it. Anywho, just sprung for a new laptop. This is one looks brand new and I have had it almost ten years.Found a 17.3 inch, terra byte, AMD quad core, 8 gig a RAM, USB 3.0, HDMI, LED backlit Windows 8.1. Taking some college courses next year and need to be mobile again. I will be back though and always here to read everyone’s comments. Been a great year for learning and appreciate everyone’s input. Stay safe and have a happy happy happy Holiday season all!

fm~Back at ya. Be safe and remember, where ever you go, there you are.
Just bought a Dell for my daughter for $500. My souped up business lap top which btw is a great gaming computer, runs circles around hers. Need to fill 3? Know exactly how you feel, do the same things myself.

  13. VARich says

Good luck Partner – will miss all the informative links! Not sure why you need all that in a laptop anyway, come the Apocalypse or more of this Administration’s policies, all you’ll need are more Zombucks! ;7 Cheers!

  14. VARich says

I thought we would have seen a back-ordered status on FMH or MTR by now given their sales momentum up to 19k so quickly. Beginning to think more than 20k were mintage, sales report on Tuesday should be foretelling.

Hope we see that preliminary product schedule within the next two weeks from the mint, be nice to know how expense ’14 is going to be and if they’ll be any surprises.., will be hard to top this year with the RP Buff and WP ASE’s.

  15. HIdalgo says

@VARich – personally, I do not expect secondary market values for the Fort McHenry or Mount Rushmore 5 ounce P coins to be significantly higher than the US Mint’s retail prices. Perhaps $50 or so. Thats’ because flippers, dealers, speculators, etc. have already stocked up on these two coins in anticipation of a quick sell out.

As I’ve said several times before and as we’ve consistently seen, “surprise” sell outs typically command significantly higher secondary market prices. Sellers, unaware of sellouts, do not increase their inventories (supplies). To increase their inventories, they must purchase additional supplies on the secondary market, which leads to higher overall prices.

  16. stephen m says

I would think, that it appears to me, any increase in value of the majority of any of the modern coins will in most instances take years to materialize but if followed closely can yield a person a little bit of profit quickly. I buy what i like and if an increase happens at a future date it is icing on the cake for me. I don’t expect increased value unless it’s a coin made of precious metals and the metals rise in value. Coins are a game of profit played by a lot of other folks.

  17. KEITHSTER says

Ya I think the PV was the surprise sellout lately almost missed mine. Think a lot of collecters passed on or missed that one so maybe sometime? Also had said my MR. had that bump on his nose so He must have had it removed and it left a scar must be all the gashes your talking about? And also said the MR’s had a lot or residue if you tilt them you can find it think they need to turn up the air to blow it off like at the end of the carwash so go slow and blowhard Mint ? Good luck to us:):>

  18. thePhelps says

My take on these coins is … to view them more as the series than the individual coin. That means to me the series of 5 ounce coins will become more popular and pricey in a few years. If you look at the 2010 coins in 2015 – and imagine trying to start collecting the series then – how hard it will be to fill in the blanks.

It is kind of like going back to start collecting the Walking Liberty halves or the Franklins or any other number of series. There will be some really easy ones to get and some really difficult ones. By the end of this series we will know which ones are popular and easy to come by and which are going to be pricey and tough to find. That said… due to the low mintages – many of today’s will be tough to find in 2021. I’d hold em and wait if I was a seller.

  19. Matt says

Thanks stephen m, RSF, thePhelps, and Steve for your comments & information. This is the best site for collectors.

    Quick question off topic…

I bought the following item off of ebay. I think I got a good deal but what puzzles me is why anyone would slab a coin but not grade it? They definitely didn’t describe it well thinking that’s why I got it for the price I did.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/390700434335?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_370wt_1167

    Looking forward to all replies.

@Tim: Yea, he pushes those boxes with his coins doesn’t he? ALWAYS talking about those boxes that the coins come with. ALWAYS! LOL!

  21. fmtransmitter says

They call that the sweetner, like when the guy who was trying buy that gun brought a 1 ounce 9mm gold round, THEN pulled out a 2 oz .223 when the guy wouldn’t take the first offer of cash. Ha…

  22. stephen m says

fmxmitter, and the man on the other channel says, that’s a good price and worth every penny of it, and he could sell them all day long for $1995.95 but he bought his right and is letting them go for $749.50 on 2 pay. What great salesman they must be and I’m sure they sell a lot of them to remain on TV for 25 years. Please don’t anyone at home try to purchase from them.

  23. Dustyroads says

  24. Ray says

Id buy one of those boxes from Apmex, but Ive only seen them offered with coins. I”m hoping that someday they will offer the case. In the end, I will probably own about 25-30 of the 50 coins. I’m not a completist. Got in too late.

  25. Mike Parent says

@ Ray – at the bottom of Apmex page it has the cases without coins for $150.

On a sidenote: I have a MT. Rushmore “P” I just got from the mint. The obverse has some markings (watermarks? – never seen those). Well sometimes it is hard to tell if it isn’t just dust inside the case. Can we open the holder? How and is it still returnable to the mint one the plastic airtite is opened? So I pay the shipping to for a replacement, do they re-imberse my shipping costs for damaged returns? Thanks —- love this site!!!

  26. fmtransmitter says

Ray, these boxes are made overseas and with a little searching you can find the same source for them as these dealers have. Spend a little time researching, you might get lucky. Just try to see if they take paypal so your protected.

  27. Dustyroads says

I was wounding if framing a set would be a good idea for the 5 oz. coins, but the box looks to be a better way to go. I really hate the cheap looking things from overseas disguised as quality. I would much rather have real quality and pay a little more for it, something that’s as nice as the coins it’s holding.

  28. Dustyroads says

Btw, you don’t suppose they sold out because I posted the add do you? If that’s the case, no pun intended, Apmex should give me great service the next time I order from them, really great service!!

  29. Dustyroads says

Say fm, those are pretty good prices, I don’t know how they can stay in business if they continue like that. Credit card purchase prices and shipping must jack the price up.

  30. Samuel says

offtopic, spent quite some $ this morning. if u r a perthmint fan the mintage of the horse 2-coin set is only 1500.
